Genesis 19

Abraham was the heir of his father Terah who was the son of Nahor and a descendant of one of Shem's five son Arpachshad. Terah is mentioned in Genesis 11:26–27, Book of Joshua 24:2, and 1 Chronicles 1:17–27 of the Hebrew Bible and Luke 3:34–36.
Abram had left Ur and also Haran which were city states. He also avoided other city-states like Sodom and Gomorrah and divided himself and his altars from the Turtledove and its goddess of the welfare state.
What was he doing and why was he able to defeat whole armies that had just conquered these city State governments when he was neither a king nor ruler?
What was Abraham really doing?
Did he form a free "Polis" through a network of Altars of freewill sacrifice that strengthen the bands of a free society by nurturing the social bonds through the voluntary practice of pure Religion?

Lot sat in the gate[1] of Sodom" The word Gate (בְּשַׁ֣עַר

bəša‘ar) seen here is the same as we see in Exodus 32:26 when Moses called the people to decide to make a choice as to the way they will serve whom (which God or the gods many).

What did it mean "Lot sat in the gate of Sodom"? Was he just enjoying the evening or was he a civil magistrate?
Jarchi (aka Rashi a prominent Jewish biblical commentator from France on the Torah and biblical texts from 1040 to 1105.) relates that some the Jews say there were five judges appointed by the "men of Sodom", and suggest that Lot was the chief justice of that world of Sodom. Others will say this contradicts Genesis 19:9.
In this place he recognizes these men and calls them lords(אֲדֹנָ֗י adonai)[2] the same as we see with Abraham.
V2 He also invites them in and offers to wash their feet before they go before "ye shall rise up early (wəhiškamtem וְהִשְׁכַּמְתֶּ֖ם VavHeyShinKafMemTavMem)[3], and go(1980 ahălaḵtem וַהֲלַכְתֶּ֣ם‪‬ VavHeyLamedKafTavMem).[4] on your ways"(ləḏarkəḵem; לְדַרְכְּכֶ֑ם LamedDaletReishKafKafMem).[5]
V2 "Then you may rise early" לְדַרְכְּכֶ֑ם lə·ḏar·kə·ḵem with a double Kaf.
V3 "and did bake unleavened bread, and they did eat."
V4 " the men of the city" וְאַנְשֵׁ֨י wə-’an-šê from enosh a man (אֱנוֹשׁ)[6] of the city הָעִ֜יר hā-‘îr[7](verses) "even the men of Sodom". Who are the men(אֱנוֹשׁ)[6] of Sodom[8] . "The neglect of the poor and needy is part of the prophet’s reproach against Sodom in Ezekiel 16:49." Cambridge Bible for Schools and Colleges.
but was it neglect that weakend the poor or legal charity. Remember "the men of the city" were merchandise, they were human resources for the "men of Sodom".
V7 "do not so wickedly."[9] We see תָּרֵֽעוּ׃ ārê‘ū in the text but but the root word is רָעַע with a Double Ayin which is said to mean spoil.
The "men of the city" had gone the way of Nimrod, Pharaoh, the corban of Herod and the Pharisees and then did degenerate into perfect savages as pagans who engage in the covetous practices[10] of idolaters [11] often do.[12]
"the men of the city" were the subject citizens of the world of Sodom. Because they had instituted a socialist type welfare system like Sumer like David said was a snare and a trap.[13] These systems always degenerated the people into Perfect savages followed by the decay of the family with corresponding gender confused. They would also destroy liberty as pagan[14] and Jew and Christian should conclude from the word of God.
Questions
Why did Lot argue about leaving Sodom? Was he suffering from a form of institutional syndrome? Institutional syndrome may describe a character deficit or disability in social and life skills. A long period living in a dependence upon institutions may produce a degenerate state where responsibility becomes frightening.
V27 This smoke was not like what Abraham saw in Genesis 15 verse 17 when he beheld a smoking furnace, and a burning lamp in his vision. That smoke was (עָשָׁן֙ AyinShinNun) ashan[15].
At the destruction of Sodom the smoke was (כְּקִיטֹ֖ר KafKufYod[[Tet]Reish) keqiytowr[16] and the term for furnace was hakibshan (הַכִּבְשָֽׁן HeyKafBeitShinNun)[17] which also was different than the term furnace we see in Abraham's vision. The furnace in the vision was tannur (תַנּ֤וּר)[18] specifically anan tannur. Anan 06049 is a Hebrew name that appears in the Bible, specifically in Nehemiah 10 but shares a meaning with "cloud" or "vapour" and God's presence, guidance, and protection.
Proverbs 3:5-6 advises, "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight." The name Anan encapsulates this principle.
Psalms 91:1 "Whoever dwells in the secret place of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty."

1

Two angels to Sodom

1 And there came two angels to Sodom at even; and Lot sat in the gate of Sodom: and Lot seeing them rose up to meet them; and he bowed himself with his face toward the ground;

2 And he said, Behold now, my lords, turn in, I pray you, into your servant's house, and tarry all night, and wash your feet, and ye shall rise up early, and go on your ways. And they said, Nay; but we will abide in the street all night.

3 And he pressed upon them greatly; and they turned in unto him, and entered into his house; and he made them a feast, and did bake unleavened bread, and they did eat.

Men of the city

4 But before they lay down, the men of the city, even the men of Sodom, compassed the house round, both old and young, all the people from every quarter:

5 And they called unto Lot, and said unto him, Where are the men which came in to thee this night? bring them out unto us, that we may know them.

Lot went out

6 And Lot went out at the door unto them, and shut the door after him,

7 And said, I pray you, brethren, do not so wickedly.[9]

8 Behold now, I have two daughters which have not known man; let me, I pray you, bring them out unto you, and do ye to them as is good in your eyes: only unto these men do nothing; for therefore came they under the shadow of my roof.

9 And they said, Stand back. And they said again, This one fellow came in to sojourn, and he will needs be a judge: now will we deal worse with thee, than with them. And they pressed sore upon the man, even Lot, and came near to break the door.

They put fourth their hand

10 But the men put forth their hand, and pulled Lot into the house to them, and shut to the door.

11 And they smote the men that were at the door of the house with blindness, both small and great: so that they wearied themselves to find the door.

12 And the men said unto Lot, Hast thou here any besides? son in law, and thy sons, and thy daughters, and whatsoever thou hast in the city, bring them out of this place:

We will destroy

13 For we will destroy this place, because the cry of them is waxen great before the face of the LORD; and the LORD hath sent us to destroy it.

14 And Lot went out, and spake unto his sons in law, which married his daughters, and said, Up, get you out of this place; for the LORD will destroy this city. But he seemed as one that mocked unto his sons in law.[19]

15 And when the morning arose, then the angels hastened Lot, saying, Arise, take thy wife, and thy two daughters, which are here; lest thou be consumed in the iniquity of the city.

Set him out of the city

16 And while he lingered (wayyiṯmahmāh וַֽיִּתְמַהְמָ֓הּ׀)[20] , the men laid hold upon his hand, and upon the hand of his wife, and upon the hand of his two daughters; the LORD being merciful unto him: and they brought him forth, and set him without the city.

Escape for thy life

17 And it came to pass, when they had brought them forth abroad, that he said, Escape for thy life; look not behind thee, neither stay thou in all the plain; escape to the mountain, lest thou be consumed.

18 And Lot said unto them, Oh, not so, my Lord:

19 Behold now, thy servant hath found grace in thy sight, and thou hast magnified thy mercy, which thou hast shewed unto me in saving my life; and I cannot escape to the mountain, lest some evil take me, and I die:

20 Behold now, this city is near to flee unto, and it is a little one: Oh, let me escape thither, (is it not a little one?) and my soul shall live.

21 And he said unto him, See, I have accepted thee concerning this thing also, that I will not overthrow this city, for the which thou hast spoken.

Escape to Zoar

22 Haste thee, escape thither; for I cannot do any thing till thou be come thither. Therefore the name of the city was called Zoar.

23 The sun was risen upon the earth when Lot entered into Zoar.[21]

24 Then the LORD rained upon Sodom and upon Gomorrah brimstone and fire from the LORD out of heaven;

25 And he overthrew those cities, and all the plain, and all the inhabitants of the cities, and that which grew upon the ground.

Pillar of salt

26 But his wife looked back from behind him, and she became a pillar of salt.

Smoke of a furnace

27 And Abraham gat up early in the morning to the place where he stood before the LORD:

28 And he looked toward Sodom and Gomorrah, and toward all the land of the plain, and beheld, and, lo, the smoke(כְּקִיטֹ֖ר KafKufYodTetReish)[16] of the country went up as the smoke (קִיטֹ֣ר KufYodTetReish)[16] of a furnace(הַכִּבְשָֽׁן HeyKafBeitShinNun)[17].

29 And it came to pass, when God destroyed the cities of the plain, that God remembered Abraham, and sent Lot out of the midst of the overthrow, when he overthrew the cities in the which Lot dwelt.

two daughters

30 And Lot went up out of Zoar, and dwelt in the mountain, and his two daughters with him; for he feared to dwell in Zoar: and he dwelt in a cave, he and his two daughters.

31 And the firstborn said unto the younger, Our father is old, and there is not a man in the earth to come in unto us after the manner of all the earth:

32 Come, let us make our father drink wine, and we will lie with him, that we may preserve seed of our father.

33 And they made their father drink wine that night: and the firstborn went in, and lay with her father; and he perceived not when she lay down, nor when she arose.

34 And it came to pass on the morrow, that the firstborn said unto the younger, Behold, I lay yesternight with my father: let us make him drink wine this night also; and go thou in, and lie with him, that we may preserve seed of our father.

35 And they made their father drink wine that night also: and the younger arose, and lay with him; and he perceived not when she lay down, nor when she arose.

36 Thus were both the daughters of Lot with child by their father.

37 And the firstborn bare a son, and called his name Moab: the same is the father of the Moabites unto this day.

38 And the younger, she also bare a son, and called his name Benammi: the same is the father of the children of Ammon unto this day.

  10. The way of error
Ezekiel 16:49 "Behold, this was the iniquity of thy sister Sodom, pride, fulness of bread, and abundance of idleness was in her and in her daughters, neither did she strengthen the hand of the poor and needy."
  11. Covetousness is idolatry
Colossians 3:5 "Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry: 6 For which things’ sake the wrath of God cometh on the children of disobedience:"
Ephesians 5:5 "For this ye know, that no whoremonger, nor unclean person, nor covetous man, who is an idolater, hath any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God."
1 Corinthians 5:10 "Yet not altogether with the fornicators of this world, or with the covetous, or extortioners, or with idolaters; for then must ye needs go out of the world. 11 But now I have written unto you not to keep company, if any man that is called a brother be a fornicator, or covetous, or an idolater, or a railer, or a drunkard, or an extortioner; with such an one no not to eat."
  12. Pagans Understood
    • Polybius as the "Historian of Historians" believed "All democracies fail".
    • Polybius explains in "The Histories" (130 BC), A Fatal Sequence commonly occurs "... when a new generation arises and the democracy falls into the hands of the grandchildren of its founders, they have become so accustomed to freedom and equality that they no longer value them, and begin to aim at pre-eminence; and it is chiefly those of ample fortune who fall into this error. 6 So when they begin to lust for power and cannot attain it through themselves or their own good qualities, they ruin their estates, tempting and corrupting the people in every possible way. 7 And hence when by their foolish thirst for reputation they have created among the masses an appetite for gifts and the habit of receiving them, democracy in its turn is abolished and changes into a rule of force and violence." Polybius#Translations_compare Polybius
    • Part of this corruption, "So when they begin to be fond of office, and find themselves unable to obtain it by their own unassisted efforts and their own merits, they ruin their estates, while enticing and corrupting the common people in every possible way. By which means when, in their senseless mania for reputation, they have made the populace ready and greedy to receive bribes, the virtue of democracy is destroyed, and it is transformed into a government of violence and the strong hand." Evelyn Shirley Shuckburgh, Translated, EBook #44126
    • This is all because "The masses continue with an appetite for benefits and the habit of receiving them by way of a rule of force and violence." And this is the result of, "The people, having grown accustomed to feed at the expense of others and to depend for their livelihood on the property of others..." This leads to the people and their government will, "institute the rule of violence; and now uniting their forces massacre, banish, and plunder, until they degenerate again into perfect savages and find once more a master and monarch."
Plutarch's Life of Coriolanus (c. 100 AD.) states, "That the man who first ruined the Roman people twas he who first gave them treats and gratuities. But this mischief crept secretly and gradually in, and did not openly make it's appearance in Rome for a considerable time."
  13. Table as a snare
23 Let their eyes be darkened, that they see not; and make their loins continually to shake.”
    • Romans 11:8 "(According as it is written, God hath given them the spirit of slumber, eyes that they should not see, and ears that they should not hear;) unto this day.
9 And David saith, Let their table be made a snare, and a trap, and a stumblingblock, and a recompence unto them:
10 Let their eyes be darkened, that they may not see, and bow down their back alway.”
  14. Destroyers of liberty
"That the man who first ruined the Roman people twas he who first gave them treats and gratuities. But this mischief crept secretly and gradually in, and did not openly make it's appearance in Rome for a considerable time." Plutarch's Life of Coriolanus (c. 100 AD.) This would include Julius Caesar and eventually Augustus Caesar which is why Plutarch also reported, “The real destroyers of the liberties of the people is he who spreads among them bounties, donations, and benefits.” This was a major theme of the Bible:
There were tables of welfare which were both snares and a traps as David and Paul stated and Peter warned would make us merchandise and curse children. Proverbs 23 told us not to not eat the "dainties" offered at those tables of Rulers and Paul says in 1 Corinthians 10 we cannot eat of those tables and the table of the Lord. We are not to consent to their covetous systems of One purse or Corban which makes the word of God to none effect.
We know when the masses become accustomed to those benefits of legal charity which are the rewards of unrighteousness provided by benefactors who exercise authority and the Fathers of the earth through the covetous practices that makes men merchandise and curse children as a surety for debt.
    • We should know, "Whenever any form of government becomes destructive of these ends [life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness], it is the right of the people to alter or abolish it...". Abraham Lincoln But that alteration must begin with ourselves.
