V1 Abimelech from ab and melek or "father king," said to be a Philistine (פְלִשְׁתִּי)[1] name. While Abram from ab and an unused word ram which became Abraham (ab-ra-ham) after the blessing of Melchisedec, righteous king. Understanding these distinctions between the nature of these manner of governing people may help you understand the purpose of Abraham's journey of faith meaning of the doctrine of Jesus. What did Christ mean when He says in Matthew 23:9-12 “9 And call no man your father upon the earth: for one is your Father,[2] which is in heaven. 10 Neither be ye called masters: for one is your Master, even Christ. 11 But he that is greatest among you shall be your servant. 12 And whosoever shall exalt himself shall be abased; and he that shall humble himself shall be exalted.”
The righteous king of Peace known in the text as Melchizedek king of Salem who blessed Abram in Genesis 14.[3]
We will see this unique word for blessing waybārekêhū(וַֽיְבָרְכֵ֖הוּ VavHeyKafReishBeitYodVav)[4] again in Genesis 27:23 when Jacob receives Essau's blessing and again in Joshua 14:13 when Caleb is blessed. Samson also receives this blessing in Judges 13:24
V14 Abraham had possession of flocks, and herds, and great store (רַבָּ֑ה)[5]: of servants (וַעֲבֻדָּ֖ה va'avuddah)[6]. Genesis 14:4 king Bera served (עָבְד֖וּ) <05647> Chedorlaomer and then rebelled <04775>. We find this verb form in Jeremiah 25:14 NSA "kings will make slaves of them" and in the KJV: kings shall serve themselves of them also... The text include 0853 ’et- אֶת־ which is untrànslated but modifies serve. "Though silently rendered in most English versions, its presence guides readers to recognize what, precisely, is being acted upon, thereby sharpening narrative clarity, reinforcing covenantal specificity, and underscoring theological emphasis." This verb form appears Genesis 26:14 and Job 1:3 "His substance also was seven thousand sheep and three thousand camels and five hundred yoke of oxen and five hundred she asses and a very great household so that this man was the greatest of all the men of the east."
There were many cities[7] in the realm called Gerar. It was not a place but a status between Kedesh and Shur.

V20 Brown-Driver-Briggs
עֵשֶׂק (Eesek) appears only once during famine in the region of Gerar. Isaac reopened the wells dug by Abraham but local shepherd viewed Isaac’s expanding presence as a threat and laid claim to those sources or well: (Genesis 26:20).
The dispute over Esek serves as a microcosm of Israel’s broader experience: God’s promises are certain, yet they unfold amid human opposition (Exodus 1:8–12; Nehemiah 4:1–6). The strife at Esek did not nullify the promise first given to Abraham; rather, it highlighted divine faithfulness when circumstances seemed hostile.
Isaac does not retaliate. He relinquishes the well and moves on, modeling the wisdom later codified in Proverbs 17:14 and reinforced by the New Testament’s call to peace (Romans 12:18; James 3:17). His restraint anticipates Christ’s own posture when reviled (1 Peter 2:23).
• Spiritual Warfare: The enemy often contests sources of “living water” (John 4:10). Guarding unity around Word and Sacrament is vital; yet, like Isaac, the Church advances by gospel proclamation rather than coercion.
The well motif reaches its fullness in Jesus Christ. At Esek, human hostility surrounds physical water; at Calvary, enmity culminates in violence against the One who offers “a spring of water welling up to eternal life” (John 4:14). Christ turns ultimate contention into reconciliation, fulfilling Isaiah 12:3, “With joy you will draw water from the springs of salvation.”
• Proverbs 15:18 – “A hot-tempered man stirs up strife, but he who is slow to anger calms dispute.”
• Psalm 18:48 – God “rescues me from my enemies; You lift me up above my foes.”
• 2 Timothy 2:24 – “A servant of the Lord must not be quarrelsome but must be kind to everyone.”

Questions
What is the "bondage of Egypt"? It was where 20% of the labor of the Israelites belonged to the government of pharaoh and they called it slavery and it was a form of "involuntary servitude" that is illegal in the world today. Through covetous practices you can still become "human resources" or what Peter called merchandise.
Abraham and Isaac were seeking to go another way than what was happening in the city-state. Why does Israel go into the Bondage of Egypt?
What are the the results of eating the dainties at the table of rulers and going into debt where a portion of your labor belonged to the State? This is because the table of the authoritarian State is a Snare. Returning to Egypt is when the people are again entangled in the elements of the world and return to The mire. If you are taking a bite out of the flesh of your neighbor or are treading[12] on your neighbor through men who exercise authority your house is full of leaven and you have returned to the flesh pots when you were in the Bondage of Egypt and have been building the cities of blood for generations. An ancient way to enslave a nation of people is to tempt them to with the covetous practices of socialism which that makes them merchandise and curses their children.

Genesis 26
God's Promise to Isaac
1 And there was a famine [13] in the land, beside the first famine that was in the days of Abraham. And Isaac went unto Abimelech king of the Philistines unto Gerar.
2 And the LORD appeared unto him, and said, Go not down into Egypt; dwell(שְׁכֹ֣ן)[14] in the land which I shall tell thee of:[15]
3 Sojourn(גּ֚וּר)[16] in this land, and I will be with thee, and will bless thee; for unto thee, and unto thy seed[17], I will give all these countries, and I will perform the oath which I sware unto Abraham thy father;
4 And I will make thy seed to multiply as the stars of heaven, and will give unto thy seed all these countries; and in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed;
5 Because that Abraham obeyed my voice, and kept my charge, my commandments[18], my statutes[19], and my laws.[20]"
Isaac and Abimelech
6 And Isaac dwelt in Gerar:
7 And the men of the place asked him of his wife; and he said, She is my sister: for he feared to say, She is my wife; lest, said he, the men of the place should kill me for Rebekah; because she was fair to look upon.
8 And it came to pass, when he had been there a long time, that Abimelech king of the Philistines looked out at a window, and saw, and, behold, Isaac was sporting with Rebekah his wife.
9 And Abimelech called Isaac, and said, Behold, of a surety she is thy wife: and how saidst thou, She is my sister? And Isaac said unto him, Because I said, Lest I die for her.
10 And Abimelech said, What is this thou hast done unto us? one of the people might lightly have lien with thy wife, and thou shouldest have brought guiltiness upon us.
11 And Abimelech charged all his people, saying, He that toucheth this man or his wife shall surely be put to death.
Isaac sowed
12 Then Isaac sowed in that land, and received in the same year an hundredfold: and the LORD blessed him.
13 And the man waxed great, and went forward, and grew until he became very great:
14 For he had possession of flocks, and possession of herds, and great store of servants (וַעֲבֻדָּ֖ה va'avuddah) [6]: and the Philistines envied him.
15 For all the wells (הַבְּאֵרֹ֗ת)[21]which his father's servants had digged[22] in the days of Abraham his father, the Philistines had stopped them, and filled them with earth.
16 And Abimelech said unto Isaac, Go from us; for thou art much mightier than we.
17 And Isaac departed thence, and pitched his tent in the valley of Gerar, and dwelt there.
18 And Isaac digged again the wells of water, which they had digged in the days of Abraham his father; for the Philistines had stopped them after the death of Abraham: and he called their names after the names by which his father had called them.
19 And Isaac's servants digged in the valley, and found there a well of springing water.
20 And the herdmen of Gerar did strive with Isaac's herdmen, saying, The water is ours: and he called the name of the well Esek; because they strove with him.
21 And they digged another well, and strove for that also: and he called the name of it Sitnah.
22 And he removed from thence, and digged another well; and for that they strove not: and he called the name of it Rehoboth; and he said, For now the LORD hath made room for us, and we shall be fruitful in the land.
23 And he went up from thence to Beersheba.
24 And the LORD appeared unto him the same night, and said, I am the God of Abraham thy father: fear not, for I am with thee, and will bless thee, and multiply thy seed for my servant Abraham's sake.
An Altar
25 And he builded an altar there, and called upon the name of the LORD, and pitched his tent there: and there Isaac's servants digged a well.
26 Then Abimelech went to him from Gerar, and Ahuzzath one of his friends, and Phichol the chief captain of his army.
27 And Isaac said unto them, Wherefore come ye to me, seeing ye hate(08130 śənêṯem שְׂנֵאתֶ֣ם) me, and have sent me away from(07971 wattəšalləḥūnî וַתְּשַׁלְּח֖וּנִי) you?
28 And they said, We saw certainly that the LORD was with thee: and we said, Let there be now an oath betwixt us, even betwixt us and thee, and let us make a covenant with thee;
29 That thou wilt do us no hurt, as we have not touched thee, and as we have done unto thee nothing but good, and have sent thee away in peace: thou art now the blessed of the LORD.
30 And he made them a feast, and they did eat and drink.
31 And they rose up betimes in the morning, and sware one to another: and Isaac sent them away, and they departed from him in peace.
32 And it came to pass the same day, that Isaac's servants came, and told him concerning the well which they had digged, and said unto him, We have found water.
33 And he called it Shebah: therefore the name of the city[7] is Beersheba unto this day.
Esau's wives
34 And Esau was forty years old when he took to wife Judith the daughter of Beeri the Hittite, and Bashemath the daughter of Elon the Hittite:
35 Which were a grief of mind unto Isaac and to Rebekah.

- ↑ Fathers of the earth
- Matthew 23:9 "And call no [man] your father upon the earth: for one is your Father, which is in heaven."
- Matthew 6:8 "Be not ye therefore like unto them: for your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask him. 9 After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. 10 Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as [it is] in heaven. 11 Give us this day our daily bread. 12 And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. 13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen."
- Matthew 7:21 "Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven."
- Matthew 12:50 "For whosoever shall do the will of my Father which is in heaven, the same is my brother, and sister, and mother."
- Luke 3:8 Bring forth therefore fruits worthy of repentance, and begin not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham to [our] father: for I say unto you, That God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham.
- Luke 11:2 And he said unto them, When ye pray, say, Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, as in heaven, so in earth.
- John 4:12 Art thou greater than our father Jacob, which gave us the well, and drank thereof himself, and his children, and his cattle?" See Beersheba.
- John 8:39 They answered and said unto him, Abraham is our father. Jesus saith unto them, If ye were Abraham s children, ye would do the works of Abraham.
- John 14:26 "But the Comforter, [which is] the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you."
- Romans 8:15 "For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father."
- 2 Corinthians 6:18 "And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty."
- 1 John 3:1 ¶ "Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not."
- The Fathers of the earth assume the natural role of the father of the family. Like the Conscripti Patri or the Patronus of Rome who become the benefactors of the masses offering them benefits and dainties from their civil tables of social welfare which are not only a snare, but destroy liberty, making the people merchandise. The Church established by Jesus would seek to have a daily ministration of Pure Religion through fervent charity.
