| What does it mean to go to Bethel[5], and dwell there: and make there an altar unto God" Why is that a conflict with Esau. We discussed this when we studied Genesis 18. |
| V2 What does it means to "Put away the strange gods". strange(הַנֵּכָר֙ hannêkār) gods(אֱלֹהֵ֤י ’ĕlōhê). What are these gods? What is it to be clean, and change your garments: . and what are the cities of oppression and cities of blood and civil cauldrons that become flesh pots? |
| V3 Repeats "go up to Bethel[5]; and I will make there an altar unto God,... in the way which I went. |
| Why the earrings that were in their ears? 05141 hannəzāmîm הַנְּזָמִ֖ים the earrings (HeyNunZayinMemYodMem) |
| The burial of the idols indicated a transition in Jacob's spiritual journey. |
| The oak or terebinth of êlâh is symbolism of strength, endurance, and divine presence. In the text we see הָאֵלָ֖ה. "The oak.—Not Abraham’s oak-grove (Genesis 12:6), referred to probably in Judges 9:6; Judges 9:37—the Hebrew word in these three places being êlôn—but that under which Joshua set up his pillar of witness (Joshua 24:26), the tree being in both these places called allâh, or êlâh, a terebinth." Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers |
| Rebekah's nurse was buried beneath an oak named Allonbachuth(oak of weeping) near Bethel. |
| In the Talmud, the oak and terebinth are often associated with strength and longevity, symbolizing a powerful presence and divine intervention in their individual personal journey and sacredness from the influence of the world. The oak serve as significant spiritual landmarks in biblical narratives referencing a relationship withe the divine, representing places of worship, and an encounter with God. |
| The word translated under is tahat תַּחַת. This is really about the strength of this commitment. |
| V27 Jacob is 108 years old Isaac is 168.
Benjamin is possibly around one year old. Joseph is 17 years old and Jacob's other children are between 17 and 24 when the family arrives in Mamre (Hebron) where Isaac lives. |
| V28. - And the days of Isaac were an hundred and fourscore years. Isaac is 40 years old marries Rebekah and 60 years old when Jacob and Esau born. Jacob is 77 years old (Genesis 25:24 - 26) and Jacob 84 years old when he married.
So, Isaac is 137 years old at the blessing and 144 when Jacob married. Jacob, during his second seven year period serving Laban, produces eleven of his twelve sons and his only daughter (Genesis 29:32 - 30:25) and was 91 and Isaac 151. Jacob is 97 years old, Joseph is 6 years old and the other children are between 6 and 13 when God commands him to return. Jacob was 107 or 108 years old when Joseph was sold which means Isaac would have been around 167 years old. Consequently, Isaac would have heard of those event 13 years before his passing. Jacob at 130 stood before Pharaoh in Egypt, at which date Joseph had been 10 years governor. He was therefore 120 when Joseph was promoted at the age of 30. |

God Blesses and Renames Jacob
1 And God said unto Jacob, Arise, go up to Bethel[5], and dwell[7] there: and make there an altar unto God, that appeared unto thee when thou fleddest from the face of Esau thy brother.
2 Then Jacob said unto his household, and to all that were with him, Put away the strange(הַנֵּכָר֙ hannêkār) gods(אֱלֹהֵ֤י ’ĕlōhê)strange(הַנֵּכָר֙ hannêkār) gods(אֱלֹהֵ֤י ’ĕlōhê) that are among you, and be clean, and change your garments:
3 And let us arise, and go up to Bethel[5]; and I will make there an altar unto God, who answered me in the day of my distress, and was with me in the way which I went.
God's under the oak
4 And they gave וַיִּתְּנ֣וּ wayyittənū unto Jacob all the strange gods which were in their hand, and all their earrings הַנְּזָמִ֖ים which were in their ears; and Jacob hid וַיִּטְמֹ֤ן wayyiṭmōn them under the oak which was by Shechem("synonym for consent").
The fear of God went with him
5 And they journeyed: and the terror חִתַּ֣ת ḥit-tat[8] of God was upon the cities that were round about them, and they did not pursue after the sons of Jacob.
6 So Jacob came to Luz, which is in the land of Canaan, that is, Bethel[5], he and all the people that were with him.
Built an alter
7 And he built there an altar, and called the place Elbethel: because there God appeared unto him, when he fled from the face of his brother.
8 But Deborah Rebekah's nurse died, and she was buried beneath Bethel under an oak: and the name of it was called Allonbachuth.
God appears
9 And God appeared (וַיֵּרָ֨א way·yê·rā) unto Jacob again, when he came out of Padanaram, and blessed him.
10 And God said unto him, Thy name is Jacob: thy name shall not be called any more Jacob, but Israel shall be thy name: and he called his name Israel.
Fruitful nation
11 And God said unto him, I am God Almighty: be fruitful and multiply; a nation and a company of nations shall be of thee, and kings shall come out of thy loins;
The land
12 And the land which I gave Abraham and Isaac, to thee I will give it, and to thy seed after thee will I give the land.
13 And God went up from him in the place where he talked with him.
Set a Pillar
14 And Jacob set up a pillar in the place where he talked with him, even a pillar of stone: and he poured a drink offering thereon, and he poured oil thereon.
15 And Jacob called the name of the place where God spake with him, Bethel[5].
The Deaths of Rachel and Isaac
16 And they journeyed from Bethel; and there was but a little way to come to Ephrath: and Rachel travailed, and she had hard labour.
17 And it came to pass, when she was in hard labour, that the midwife said unto her, Fear not; thou shalt have this son also.
18 And it came to pass, as her soul was in departing, (for she died) that she called his name Benoni (sorrow): but his father called him Benjamin(right hand).
19 And Rachel died, and was buried in the way to Ephrath, which is Bethlehem.
20 And Jacob set a pillar upon her grave: that is the pillar of Rachel's grave unto this day.
Israel journeyed
21 And Israel journeyed, and spread his tent beyond the tower of Edar.
Reuben Bilhah and the sons
22 And it came to pass, when Israel dwelt in that land, that Reuben went and lay with Bilhah his father's concubine: and Israel heard it וַיִּשְׁמַ֖ע. Now the sons of Jacob were twelve:
The Family
23 The sons of Leah; Reuben, Jacob's firstborn, and Simeon, and Levi, and Judah, and Issachar, and Zebulun:
24 The sons of Rachel; Joseph, and Benjamin:
25 And the sons of Bilhah, Rachel's handmaid; Dan, and Naphtali:
26 And the sons of Zilpah, Leah's handmaid; Gad, and Asher: these are the sons of Jacob, which were born to him in Padanaram.
27 And Jacob came unto Isaac his father unto Mamre, unto the city of Arbah, which is Hebron, where Abraham and Isaac sojourned.
28 And the days of Isaac were an hundred and fourscore years.
29 And Isaac gave up the ghost, and died, and was gathered unto his people, being old and full of days: and his sons Esau and Jacob buried him.

- ↑ Fathers of the earth
- Matthew 23:9 "And call no [man] your father upon the earth: for one is your Father, which is in heaven."
- Matthew 6:8 "Be not ye therefore like unto them: for your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask him. 9 After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. 10 Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as [it is] in heaven. 11 Give us this day our daily bread. 12 And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. 13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen."
- Matthew 7:21 "Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven."
- Matthew 12:50 "For whosoever shall do the will of my Father which is in heaven, the same is my brother, and sister, and mother."
- Luke 3:8 Bring forth therefore fruits worthy of repentance, and begin not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham to [our] father: for I say unto you, That God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham.
- Luke 11:2 And he said unto them, When ye pray, say, Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, as in heaven, so in earth.
- John 4:12 Art thou greater than our father Jacob, which gave us the well, and drank thereof himself, and his children, and his cattle?" See Beersheba.
- John 8:39 They answered and said unto him, Abraham is our father. Jesus saith unto them, If ye were Abraham s children, ye would do the works of Abraham.
- John 14:26 "But the Comforter, [which is] the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you."
- Romans 8:15 "For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father."
- 2 Corinthians 6:18 "And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty."
- 1 John 3:1 ¶ "Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not."
- The Fathers of the earth assume the natural role of the father of the family. Like the Conscripti Patri or the Patronus of Rome who become the benefactors of the masses offering them benefits and dainties from their civil tables of social welfare which are not only a snare, but destroy liberty, making the people merchandise. The Church established by Jesus would seek to have a daily ministration of Pure Religion through fervent charity.

- Luke 22:25 "And he said unto them, The kings of the Gentiles exercise lordship over them; and they that exercise authority upon them are called benefactors. But ye [shall] not [be] so:..."
