Genesis 14

Abram was the heir of his father Terah but not yet to Shem the son of Noah.
Abram had left Ur and Haran which were both city states which avoided. As a Hebrew he and his altars were separate from the Turtledove altars and its goddess of the welfare state.
He would not eat of their tables. He did not have an appetite for the dainties of kings nor rulers?
Was Abraham's "Polis" established through a network of Altars of freewill offering that strengthen the bands of a voluntary practice of pure Religion?
Comments
Abraham would not dwell in the cities of blood but sought to dwell under another principality in a high place.
"He that dwelleth[1] in the secret[2] place of the most High shall abide[3] under the shadow[4] of the Almighty." Psalms 91:1
Abraham will seek to dwelled "between Kadesh[5]. and Shur[6], and sojourned in Gerar." [7] Between the Holy Spirit and and the desolate wilderness but according to a walk of faith in Spirit and in truth as we see in Genesis 20. Verse 7 also tells us that (עֵ֤ין ‘ên מִשְׁפָּט֙ mispat) Enmishpat (עֵ֤ין ‘ên מִשְׁפָּט֙ mispat)[8] means a fountain of justice.
Can we tie Abraham's vision of Genesis 15 verse 17 when he beheld a smoking furnace, and a burning lamp and when he fought Chedorlaomer and Amraphel[9] who came to punish rebels in Genesis 14?
Then there is the destruction of Sodom, the hesitation of Lot to flee, and the moral degeneration of the people.
What is the whole
Chedor-laomer texts, from the Spartoli tablets collection in the British Museum, may make reference to this period.
V7 And they returned, and came to Enmishpat(עֵ֤ין ‘ên מִשְׁפָּט֙ mispat)Enmishpat(עֵ֤ין ‘ên מִשְׁפָּט֙ mispat)[8], which is Kadesh [10].
The Spartoli tablets (c. 650 BCE) describe this famous attack of Babylonia by a coalition of evil kings named Kudur-KUKUmal.
There writings on a tablets in the Imperial Ottoman Museum in Constantinople including a letter from the known Babylonian King Hammurabi, which mentions a Kudur-laghamar.
V14 There has been said to be many Egyptian menservants who were maintained within Abraham's houshold but also there were 378 "picked men generated" which might represent another thousand people. Although we see the number "three hundred and eighteen" in this text they were men trained for combat.
People gathered as a mutual insurance, a sort of social safety net. They could gather in city states or like Abram with his Altars of clay and stone.
V1 Amraphel[9] has been thought by some scholars (including the Catholic Encyclopedia (1907) and the Jewish Encyclopaedia (1906)) to be "Hammurabi the man of Babylon".
Then there is Arioch[11] king of Ellasar אֶלָּסָ֑ר AlefLamedSamechReish[12] is literally " mighty god(ruler) of a throng or multitude of people".
* Some write that this could be Eri-aku king of Larsa because of an inscription That reads
Eri-Aku, "the powerful man," "the nourisher of Ur (of the Chaldees), the king of Larsa, the king of Sumer and Akkad; son of Kudur-mabuk, the father of Emutbala."
Chedorlaomer[13] seems to be the king of Elam[14] but the term "Elam" is equal to the term "eternity" or in the Aramaic "forever" and Chedorlaome is said to be a "handful of sheaves". The bundle of sheaves could be similar to the Roman word "fasces" or "fascis" which later became the word "fagot" (a bundle of sticks). It symbolized the "authority" in ancient Rome, and is the source of the political term "fascist" and "fascism."
The term Këdorla‘omer, (רמֶעֹלָרְדָכְּ ) KafDaletReishLamedAyinMemReish‭ Is also said to be the "servant of [the god] Lagamar." The term Lagamal can mean to give "no mercy" and Laomer is a "god of the Elomites". But the term Lagamar only occurs in Neo-Assyrian sources so it seems to be a meaning after the the appearance of Lagamal. Also Laomer is the "god of the Elomites".
The idea of kingdoms being eternal is more a sales pitch of an insurance company and the ambition of Rulers to pass power to their sons and perpetual bondage to the people.
and Tidal[15] king of nations(goyim) with tidal from words meaning fear and be afraid.
The Battle of the Vale of Siddim, also often called the War of Nine Kings or the Slaughter of Chedorlaomer, was an event in the Hebrew Bible book of Genesis 14:1-17.
V13 confederate with Abram were the “lords of the covenant of Abram,” i.e. allies with him by mutual bods through the Hebrew[16] altars[17] of Abram.

Like Abimelech the Philistine, Genesis 21:22-23; Genesis 21:32, Genesis 26:28-31.

The spiritual context of the "Plains", "Strength" or "Oaks[18] of Mamre"[19] symbolizes a place of divine encounter in spirit and truth, revelation and action. This was particularly associated with the patriarch society of Abraham and the pure religion of God, as opposed to the patronuses of the city states and its leaven and blood. The altars of Abraham were the social safety nets of of love that is the Corban of Christ that draws the Holy Spirit to us and we to it under the tree of life. "Mamre[19] represents a place where faith and hope can be strengthened, even in the face of adversity".
V10 "and fell" which is not NunPeiLamed[20] but VavYodPeiLamedVav(וַיִּפְּלוּ) so that "they that remained fled to the mountain."
V11-12 The armies spoiled Sodom and Gomorrah of every thing of value, including Lot and his valuables. Remember Lot is the grandson of Terah.
V13, brother אֲחִ֤י Eshcol, and brother אֲחִ֤י Aner were "confederate" or "allies" with Abram. This verse indicates that these men, may have been Amorite at one time but were now all brothers אֲחִ֤י. What formed the social bonds of support and loyalty found in a voluntary society of faith, hope, and charity rather the force, fear, and fealty of Nimrod, and FDR.
Questions
Who was Abraham?
Who was Melchizedek king of Salem?
Why did he bring forth bread and wine?
And why was he called "the priest of the most high God."
Did he desire to free people like Moses, John the Baptist and Jesus?
When he Departed with "many souls" was that an early form of the Exodus?
What did the Battle of Siddim have to do with the Reserve fund and the Hammurabi codes?
Why did Lot want to go to another city in Genesis 19?

Kings and rebels

1 And it came to pass in the days of Amraphel[9], king of Shinar,[21] Arioch[11], king of Ellasar[12], Chedorlaomer[13] king of Elam[14] , and Tidal[15] king of nations;

2 That these made war with Bera[22] king of Sodom,[23] and with Birsha[24] king of Gomorrah, Shinab[25] king of Admah, and Shemeber[26] king of Zeboiim, and the king of Bela, which is Zoar[27].

3 All these were joined together in the vale of Siddim, which is the salt sea.

4 Twelve years they served Chedorlaomer, and in the thirteenth year they rebelled.

Chedorlaomer and his kings

5 And in the fourteenth year came Chedorlaomer, and the kings that were with him, and smote the Rephaims in Ashteroth Karnaim, and the Zuzims in Ham, and the Emims in Shaveh Kiriathaim,

6 And the Horites in their mount Seir, unto Elparan, which is by the wilderness.

7 And they returned, and came to Enmishpat(עֵ֤ין ‘ên מִשְׁפָּט֙ mispat)[8], which is Kadesh [10], and smote all the country of the Amalekites, and also the Amorites, that dwelt in Hazezontamar.

8 And there went out the king of Sodom, and the king of Gomorrah, and the king of Admah, and the king of Zeboiim, and the king of Bela (the same is Zoar;) and they joined battle with them in the vale of Siddim;[28]

9 With Chedorlaomer[13] the king of Elam[14] , and with Tidal[15] king of nations, and Amraphel[9] king of Shinar[21], and Arioch[11] king of Ellasar[12]; four kings with five.

King of Sodom fled

10 And the vale of Siddim was full of slimepits; and the kings of Sodom and Gomorrah fled, and fell(וַיִּפְּלוּ)[20] there; and they that remained fled to the mountain.

The took goods and people

11 And they took all the goods of Sodom and Gomorrah, and all their victuals, and went their way.

12 And they took Lot, Abram's brother's son, who dwelt in Sodom, and his goods, and departed.

Confederates

13 And there came one that had escaped, and told Abram the Hebrew; for he dwelt in the plain of Mamre the Amorite, brother of Eshcol, and brother of Aner: and these were confederate[29] with Abram.

The trained servants and allies

14 And when Abram heard that his brother was taken captive, he armed his trained servants, born in his own house, three hundred and eighteen, and pursued them unto Dan.

15 And he divided himself against them, he and his servants, by night, and smote them, and pursued them unto Hobah, which is on the left hand of Damascus.[30]

16 And he brought back all the goods, and also brought again his brother Lot, and his goods, and the women also, and the people.

The king of Sodom

17 And the king of Sodom went out to meet him after his return from the slaughter of Chedorlaomer, and of the kings that were with him, at the valley of Shaveh, which is the king's dale.

The righteous king

18 And Melchizedek king of Salem[31] brought forth bread and wine: and he was the priest of the most high God.

19 And he blessed him, and said, Blessed be Abram of the most high God, possessor of heaven and earth:

20 And blessed be the most high God, which hath delivered thine enemies into thy hand. And he gave him tithes of all.

The offer of Bera

21 And the king[22] of Sodom said unto Abram, Give me the persons[32], and take the goods to thyself.

22 And Abram said to the king of Sodom, I have lift up mine hand unto the LORD, the most high God, the possessor[33] of heaven and earth,

23 That I will not take from a thread even to a shoelatchet, and that I will not take any thing that is thine, lest thou shouldest say, I have made Abram rich:

24 Save only that which the young men have eaten, and the portion of the men which went with me, Aner, Eshcol, and Mamre; let them take their portion.

ἔρημος (erēmos - 2048), meaning "desert" or "wilderness" suggests a measure of isolating, fasting, and yearning. Genesis 16, Genesis 20.

  32. The sin the Sodom

Genesis 13:13 “‭13 But the men of Sodom were wicked and sinners before the LORD exceedingly.”
Ezekiel 16:49 "Behold, this was the iniquity of thy sister Sodom, pride, fulness of bread, and abundance of idleness was in her and in her daughters, neither did she strengthen the hand of the poor and needy."
Genesis 14:21-23 "And the king of Sodom said unto Abram, Give me the persons, and take the goods to thyself. 22 And Abram said to the king of Sodom, I have lift up mine hand unto the LORD, the most high God, the possessor of heaven and earth, 23 That I will not [take] from a thread even to a shoelatchet, and that I will not take any thing that [is] thine, lest thou shouldest say, I have made Abram rich:
Deuteronomy 32:31-33 “‭31 For their rock is not as our Rock, even our enemies themselves being judges. ‭32 For their vine is of the vine of Sodom, and of the fields of Gomorrah: their grapes are grapes of gall, their clusters are bitter: ‭33 Their wine is the poison of dragons, and the cruel venom of asps.”
Isaiah 1:9-19 “‭9 Except the LORD of hosts had left unto us a very small remnant, we should have been as Sodom, and we should have been like unto Gomorrah. ‭10 Hear the word of the LORD, ye rulers of Sodom; give ear unto the law of our God, ye people of Gomorrah. ‭11 To what purpose is the multitude of your sacrifices unto me? saith the LORD: I am full of the burnt offerings of rams, and the fat of fed beasts; and I delight not in the blood of bullocks, or of lambs, or of he goats. ‭12 When ye come to appear before me, who hath required this at your hand, to tread my courts? ‭13 Bring no more vain oblations; incense is an abomination unto me; the new moons and sabbaths, the calling of assemblies, I cannot away with; it is iniquity, even the solemn meeting. 14 Your new moons and your appointed feasts my soul hateth: they are a trouble unto me; I am weary to bear them. ‭15 And when ye spread forth your hands, I will hide mine eyes from you: yea, when ye make many prayers, I will not hear: your hands are full of blood. ‭16 Wash you, make you clean; put away the evil of your doings from before mine eyes; cease to do evil; ‭17 Learn to do well; seek judgment, relieve the oppressed, judge the fatherless, plead for the widow. ‭18 Come now, and let us reason together, saith the LORD: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool. ‭19 If ye be willing and obedient, ye shall eat the good of the land:”
Isaiah 3:8-9 “‭8 For Jerusalem is ruined, and Judah is fallen: because their tongue and their doings are against the LORD, to provoke the eyes of his glory. ‭9 The shew of their countenance doth witness against them; and they declare their sin as Sodom, they hide it not. Woe unto their soul! for they have rewarded evil unto themselves.”
Jeremiah 23:14 “‭14 I have seen also in the prophets of Jerusalem an horrible thing: they commit adultery, and walk in lies: they strengthen also the hands of evildoers, that none doth return from his wickedness: they are all of them unto me as Sodom, and the inhabitants thereof as Gomorrah.”
Lamentations 4:5-10 “‭5 They that did feed delicately are desolate in the streets: they that were brought up in scarlet embrace dunghills. ‭6 For the punishment of the iniquity of the daughter of my people is greater than the punishment of the sin of Sodom, that was overthrown as in a moment, and no hands stayed on her. ‭7 Her Nazarites were purer than snow, they were whiter than milk, they were more ruddy in body than rubies, their polishing was of sapphire: ‭8 Their visage is blacker than a coal; they are not known in the streets: their skin cleaveth to their bones; it is withered, it is become like a stick. ‭9 They that be slain with the sword are better than they that be slain with hunger: for these pine away, stricken through for want of the fruits of the field. ‭10 The hands of the pitiful women have sodden their own children: they were their meat in the destruction of the daughter of my people.”
Jude 1:7-8 “‭7 Even as Sodom and Gomorrha, and the cities about them in like manner, giving themselves over to fornication, and going after strange flesh, are set forth for an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire. ‭8 Likewise also these filthy dreamers defile the flesh, despise dominion, and speak evil of dignities.”
