Genesis 25

Rulers, like Nimrod of Babylon, Bera of Sodom, and even Saul of Israel may gain power in many ways, but they often institute systems welfare through the State or civil tables that should be for the welfare of the people but are a snare and a trap. Because they are rulers who use an exercising authority the appetite of the people for benefits causes the leaders of the masses resort to the use of force to provide those unearned entitlements.
The ever increasing desire for those gifts, gratuities[1] dainties their power over the people will grow and the people will become weak and degenerate.
John the Baptist, Jesus, and Early Christians, to say nothing of Abraham, Moses, and the prophets, would not do to provide the Welfare of their society. The called out ministers of those nations would be called the Church in the wilderness or the Church. The system of world of men were often a snare and a trap.
The birth right of Esau was snared by Isaac manifesting the maxims of the Natural law.[2]
This was a warning to the people of the "field" who would develop an appetite for the wages of unrighteousness. This is where we find the Christian conflict with the world.  We all have a a choice, Christ or chaos.

V6 Abraham gave gifts (נָתַ֥ן) [3] to others but "sent them away (וַֽיְשַׁלְּחֵ֞ם wayšalləḥêm)[4] from Isaac his son, while he yet lived (בְּעוֹדֶ֣נּוּ bə‘ōwḏennū BeitAyinVavDaletNunVav)[5] (חַ֔י)[6]". Bedouin, which refers to nomadic Arab peoples, will send their younger sons with a share of their goods (Luke 15:12), leaving the heir with an inheritance.
Abraham was 137 years of age at Sarah’s death, and lived to be 175, it is quite possible that, left solitary by Isaac’s marriage, he took Keturah to wife, and had by her six sons.
V16 These are the sons of Ishmael, and these are their names, by their towns(בְּחַצְרֵיהֶ֖ם bəḥaṣrêhem)[7], and by their castles; (וּבְטִֽירֹתָ֑ם ūḇəṭîrōṯām)[8]
After the flood many mocked and despised their birthright as the children of God. Only Abraham followed the way.
Isaac sons would face the same choice as the sons of Adam as we all do.
Esau "despised his birthright" and went the wrong way. Esau is said to mean a "profane person". He thought so little of his birth right he sold it for the benefit of a free stuff. Who can say they have not done the same?
In verse 27 we see Esau was a cunning hunter. The same word hunter is used to describe Nimrod who was a mighty hunter or provider instead of the Lord.
The word "plain" used to describe Jacob is more commonly translated perfect or undefiled.[9]
The "dwelling in tents" is what the people did before kings and rulers. It is the antithesis of dwelling in cities like Cain and Sodom or the people of Israel under Rehoboam.
Abraham and Isaac were the leaders of many "souls" and so were Jacob and Esau but they used different methods.
We also see the use of the word field which has many forms. The term can mean a cultivated or plowed field and also appears in Genesis 4:8 "And Cain talked with Abel his brother: and it came to pass, when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother, and slew him."
Both Jacob and Esau were able to provide for others but Esau system ran short and like Nimrod it defiled Esau because of the nature of the system.
Nimrod and Esau used a similar system as Cain and Rome under Caesar. These systems all forced contributions of the people like the Pharisees and their Corban which made the word of God to none effect.
From the beginning there has been two systems, two ways. One operated by force, fear, and fealty. The people were engaged in covetous practices because of their desire and wantonness.
Christ taught the way of faith, hope, and charity which provided daily bread through the perfect law of liberty and love.
The Bible talks about Pure religion being undefiled[10] in James 1:27 about Pure Religion which is a statement about how you provide for the needy of your society "unspotted" by the systems of the "world" which uses a cultivated system of force to provide the welfare and benefits of society.
V21 we see twice for the first time. But we see it again in Exodus 8:30 from Pharaoh, and intreated the LORD.", Exodus 10:18 "from Pharaoh, and intreated the LORD." and Judges 13:8 Then Manoah intreated the LORD.

In the [Greek Text] we see deomai εδέετο 1189 "to beg (as binding oneself), i.e. petition" 25:21

V22 "The sons" (written הַבָּנִים֙ habbānîm in the text) "struggled together (וַיִּתְרֹֽצֲצ֤וּ wayyiṯrōṣăṣū)[11] within her;"
The Hebrew term Ratsats's base is ReishTzadikTzadik רָצַץ but the text shows a much more complex term וַיִּתְרֹֽצֲצ֤וּ VavYodTavReishTzadikTzadikVav.
She was dismayed by this struggling and it says "And she went" to find out from the LORD what this struggle was all about.
Some will tell that the word translated she went seen here in the text as וַתֵּ֖לֶךְ wattêleḵ is translated from halak הָלַךְ [12] while others will tell you the word is from יָלַךְ‎ yalak [13]
The purpose of the going is "to enquire (דָּרַשׁ‎ darash)[14] of the LORD".
Can VavTavLamedKaf וַתֵּ֖לֶךְ wattêleḵ which we are supposed to believe just means she went mean more?
Where did she go?
What is the real meaning of VavTavLamedKaf וַתֵּ֖לֶךְ wattêleḵ?
It cannot mean the same as YodLamedKaf nor HeyLamedKaf which just mean to go or walk. The term is seen in Genesis 7:18 referring to the Ark floating on the water.
It is used to describe Hagar in Genesis 21 in verses 14, 16, and 19 when she departed and went to sit down and she went to get water from the well God revealed.
V23 the LORD reveals that there are two manners of people in her that will be separate out of her womb. The base words לְאֹם leom means people[15] from your body מֵעֶה‎ me‘ah[16] appears as לאמים ממעיך in the text. This appearance of לְאֻמִּ֔ים lə’ummîm is actually given the Strongs number 03817 and is said to mean the "descendants of Abraham and Keturah by Dedan" which we see in verse 3.[17] But the same letters לאמים found in verse 23 are given the Strong's 03816 almost everywhere.
V23 The Hebrew word translated womb is normally בֶּטֶן beten but here, and only here, we see בְּבִטְנֵ֔ךְ bəḇiṭnêḵ, BeitBeitTetNunKaf. The double Beit could be attributed to the presence of Twins and the Kaf (potential crown) could reference to two manners of peoples referenced earlier.
V29, V30, V34
  • Did Jacob sod(וַיָּ֥זֶד VavYodZayinDalet)[18] pottage[19]?
  • Was it a pottage of (plural) lentiles (עדשׁים)[20]?
  • Why was it red[21] pottage?
The word for pottage in the Greek text from the Apostolic_Bible_Polyglot (ABP Greek to English interlinear) is ecko[22] but appears in the form of έψημα hepsema and said to mean a stew. But ecko can mean to have, i.e. to hold, even to possess as "used of those joined to anyone by the bonds of natural blood or marriage or friendship or duty or law etc,".
While the root word echo actually means "to have" and is equivalent to "to hold" the Greek word "έψημα" (hepsema (stew)) is said to simply mean "boiled" in the sense of refinement through a transformation of things like raw grapes to make syrup through a purification process of becoming valuable. The term of hepsema could represent the intensification of an experience, emotion, or idea through a process of focused attention or enduring a challenging period.
Could the word sod be related to the word pottage and mean to make an offer that seems sweet but brings an agreement and loss of a birthright?
The Bible talks about consent, dainties offered by rulers that are snares, appetites and temptations.
The Hebrew term sod is commonly translated "'deal proudly, presumptuously, presume, and proud"[18] and only appears once as the Hebrew in this form וַיָּ֥זֶד wayyāzeḏ and within the Greek text the word "έψημα" (hepsema(stew))[22] is found and is more commonly translated "deal proudly" also.
It is seldom translated boiled but the common word for boiled is rathach.[23] Or even the common word for seethe is בָּשַׁל‎ bashal[24].
So, is there a deeper meaning to sod[18] pottage[19]?
It certainly caused a loss of a right.
In the Greek text of Genesis 25:29 we also see "ήψησε" (ípsise (boil)) which also from Ecko[22], and translates as boiled but means "he/she/it sounded".
It is the third-person singular past tense form of the verb "ηχώ" (iho), meaning "to sound" or "to echo".
  • While not a direct alternative meaning of "ήψησε" (ípsise (boil))[22] itself, one could consider the various contexts in which something might be said to have "sounded" or "echoed". This could refer to a literal echo of previous difficulty or, metaphorically, could represent the influence or consequence of an event. That is what we are seeing with Jacob and Esau. Esau is not a lone hunter in the woods but has many in his own household.

The term sod in the Hebrew is wayyāzeḏ (וַיָּ֥זֶד VavYodZayinDalet) which only appears in this one verse with the root word never meaning boil' but rather "'deal proudly, presumptuously, presume, proud"[18].

Was Jacob dealing arrogantly with his brother to take an advantage or manipulate him.?
Pottage is supposed to be from the word we are told means sod. It appears as נָזִיד (nazid)[19] and is from a word meaning arrogant or presumptuously and not boiled we may enquire what is its real meaning?
The term does appear here in Genesis 25:29 but also in 2 Kings 4, where a pot of stew is prepared for the sons of the prophets.
Was that just a stew also or was it a pottage of temptation?
It also appears in Haggai 2, where it refers to food items that are not sanctified.
What else claimed to be sacred but was not?
The corban of the Pharisees made the word of God to non effect even though it was an offering but not one of charity.
What was the table that should have been for your welfare but was a trap and a snare?
V34 "Then Jacob gave Esau bread[25] and pottage of lentiles ( עָדָשׁ )[20] but in the text we see ‘ăḏāšîm, עדשׁים from an unused root of uncertain meaning found in Genesis 25:34 and 2 Samuel 23:11.

"A graphic portrait of an utterly carnal mind, which lives solely in and for the immediate gratification of appetite."[26]

Seeing Red
"Give me some of that red; for this he was called Edom, or Red. Gratifying the sensual appetite ruins thousands of precious souls. When men's hearts walk after their own eyes, Job 31:7, and when they serve their own bellies, they are sure to be punished." [27]
If the sin of Edom is that he sells his birthright for the sake of his appetite then that would be the error of Balaam and the deeds of the Nicolaitan which God hates.
Questions
Abraham married Keturah(קְטוּרָֽה׃)[28] whose name is incense. What could that represent?
Why towns(בְּחַצְרֵיהֶ֖ם bəḥaṣrêhem)[7], and by their castles; (וּבְטִֽירֹתָ֑ם ūḇəṭîrōṯām)[8] and not cities?
How does an appetite for offered benefits, specifically the dainties of rulers, bring about a loss of rights?
How does the consent to having one purse run toward death?

Abraham's Death and His Descendants

1 Then again Abraham took a wife, and her name was Keturah. (קְטוּרָֽה׃)[28]

2 And she bare him Zimran, and Jokshan, and Medan, and Midian, and Ishbak, and Shuah.

3 And Jokshan begat Sheba, and Dedan. And the sons of Dedan were Asshurim, and Letushim, and Leummim.[17]

4 And the sons of Midian; Ephah, and Epher, and Hanoch, and Abida, and Eldaah. All these were the children of Keturah.

Gave all to Isaac

5 And Abraham gave (וַיִּתֵּ֧ן)[3] all that he had unto Isaac.

And to the son

6 But unto the sons of the concubines, which Abraham had, Abraham gave gifts (נָתַ֥ן) [3], and sent them away (וַֽיְשַׁלְּחֵ֞ם wayšalləḥêm)[4] from Isaac his son, while he yet lived (בְּעוֹדֶ֣נּוּ)[5] (חַ֔י)[6], eastward, unto the east country.

7 And these are the days of the years of Abraham's life which he lived, an hundred threescore and fifteen years.

Abraham dies

8 Then Abraham gave up the ghost, and died in a good old age, an old man, and full of years; and was gathered to his people.

9 And his sons Isaac and Ishmael buried him in the cave of Machpelah (הַמַּכְפֵּלָה֙ ), in the field of Ephron the son of Zohar the Hittite, which is before Mamre;

10 The field which Abraham purchased of the sons of Heth: there was Abraham buried, and Sarah his wife.

Isaac blessed by the well

11 And it came to pass after the death of Abraham, that God blessed his son Isaac; and Isaac dwelt by the well Lahairoi.

Generations of Ishmael

12 Now these are the generations of Ishmael, Abraham's son, whom Hagar the Egyptian, Sarah's handmaid, bare unto Abraham:

13 And these are the names of the sons of Ishmael, by their names, according to their generations: the firstborn of Ishmael, Nebajoth; and Kedar, and Adbeel, and Mibsam,

14 And Mishma, and Dumah, and Massa,

15 Hadar, and Tema, Jetur, Naphish, and Kedemah:

Towns and castles

16 These are the sons of Ishmael, and these are their names, by their towns, and by their castles; twelve princes according to their nations.[29]

17 And these are the years of the life of Ishmael, an hundred and thirty and seven years: and he gave up the ghost and died; and was gathered unto his people.

18 And they dwelt from Havilah unto Shur, that is before Egypt, as thou goest toward Assyria: and he died in the presence of all his brethren.

Isaac entreated

19 And these are the generations of Isaac, Abraham's son: Abraham begat Isaac:

20 And Isaac was forty years old when he took Rebekah to wife, the daughter of Bethuel the Syrian of Padanaram, the sister to Laban the Syrian.

21 And Isaac intreated (וַיֶּעְתַּ֨ר vaiye'tar)[30] the LORD (לַֽיהוָה֙) for his wife(אִשְׁתֹּ֔ו ishtov)[31], because she was barren: and the LORD was intreated[30] of him, and Rebekah his wife conceived.

The Birth of Esau and Jacob

22 And the children struggled together (וַיִּתְרֹֽצֲצ֤וּ wayyiṯrōṣăṣū)[11] within her; and she said, If it be so, why am I thus? And she went to enquire[14] of the LORD.

23 And the LORD said unto her, Two nations are in thy womb, and two manner of people (lə’ummîm, לְאֻמִּ֔ים peoples)[15] shall be separated from thy bowels; and the one people shall be stronger than the other people; and the elder shall serve the younger.

24 And when her days to be delivered were fulfilled, behold, there were twins in her womb.

25 And the first came out red, all over like an hairy garment; and they called his name Esau.

26 And after that came his brother out, and his hand took hold on Esau's heel; and his name was called Jacob: and Isaac was threescore years old when she bare them.

27 And the boys grew: and Esau was a cunning hunter, a man of the field; and Jacob was a plain man, dwelling in tents.

28 And Isaac loved Esau, because he did eat of his venison: but Rebekah loved Jacob.

Esau Sells His Birthright

29 And Jacob sod(וַיָּ֥זֶד VavYodZayinDalet)[18] pottage[19] : and Esau came from the field, and he was faint:

30 And Esau said to Jacob, Feed me, I pray thee, with that same red[21] pottage;[19] for I am faint: therefore was his name called Edom.

31 And Jacob said, Sell me this day thy birthright.

32 And Esau said, Behold, I am at the point to die: and what profit shall this birthright do to me?

33 And Jacob said, Swear to me this day; and he sware unto him: and he sold his birthright unto Jacob.

34 Then Jacob gave Esau bread[25] and pottage of lentiles ( עָדָשׁ )[20]; and he did eat and drink, and rose up, and went his way: thus Esau despised his birthright.

  1. Destroyers of liberty
"That the man who first ruined the Roman people twas he who first gave them treats and gratuities. But this mischief crept secretly and gradually in, and did not openly make it's appearance in Rome for a considerable time." Plutarch's Life of Coriolanus (c. 100 AD.) This would include Julius Caesar and eventually Augustus Caesar which is why Plutarch also reported, “The real destroyers of the liberties of the people is he who spreads among them bounties, donations, and benefits.” This was a major theme of the Bible:
There were tables of welfare which were both snares and a traps as David and Paul stated and Peter warned would make us merchandise and curse children. Proverbs 23 told us not to not eat the "dainties" offered at those tables of Rulers and Paul says in 1 Corinthians 10 we cannot eat of those tables and the table of the Lord. We are not to consent to their covetous systems of One purse or Corban which makes the word of God to none effect.
We know when the masses become accustomed to those benefits of legal charity which are the rewards of unrighteousness provided by benefactors who exercise authority and the Fathers of the earth through the covetous practices that makes men merchandise and curse children as a surety for debt.
    • We should know, "Whenever any form of government becomes destructive of these ends [life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness], it is the right of the people to alter or abolish it...". Abraham Lincoln But that alteration must begin with ourselves.
