Genesis 38
|
This why we are not to covet anything that is thy neighbors'. This is the golden rule. Covetousness is idolatry.[1] It will make you merchandise and curse children if you. This is why Jesus says you are not to be like the government of the gentiles that offer dainties of rulers but exercise authority.[2] |

| V1 "went down from" is וַיֵּ֥רֶד (wayyêreḏ) from the root word יָרַד yarad[3] meaning fell or sank his brother may suggest parting from their was if not also from the way of Jacob. When it says “Turned in to,” it may literally means in the shadow of a Canaanite; |
V1 "and turned in to" is said to be translated from the root word( נָטָה) natah[4] NunTetHey . In the text we can see וַיֵּ֛ט (Vav YodTet). The Vav can represent and followed by YodTet with no Nun or Hey which is said to be in the root word נָטָה natah.
V1 The words and letters of verse 1 of Genesis 38 are clearly telling us Judah is going another way, the way of the Canaanite, from that of Abraham and Jacob who was Israel. |
| V1 "a certain Adullamite"((עֲדֻלָּמִ֖י) עדל in Arabic turn aside.)[5] so, whose name was Hirah[6] ((חִירָֽה) from חָרַר - turn pale [7] |
| Judah perverted the seeking of the Malchut which was the way of faith that Abraham sought as a stranger in the world but not of the world of Abimelech or Nimrod. He chose not to be diligent in the ways of Israel but was tempted in the ways of Canaan. He turned aside with a certain Adullamite"(עֲדֻלָּמִ֖י) [5] as we see in Genesis 38. |
V2-V10 Shuah's sons:
|
| V11 Tamar is asked to wait for Shelah. This name Shelah שֵׁלָה as a shortened from שְׁאֵלָה meaning the formal act of asking. actually means the formal act of asking as when Hannah asking for a son in 1 Samuel 1:17. But the theological significance of Chezib בִכְזִ֖יב Chezib, meaning "disappointing, deceptive, false, or lying" may reveal a critical truth. The etymology suggest Judah does not honor his word like Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. When Tamar’s hope for an heir from Judah remains unfulfilled from Judah Shelah. The consequences of unfaithfulness among the Canaanites was all to common. Tamar is in the genealogy of Jesus, the Messiah. Matthew 1:3 "And Judas begat Phares and Zara of Thamar; and Phares begat Esrom; and Esrom begat Aram;" And again in Ruth 4:12 "And let thy house be like the house of Pharez, whom Tamar bare unto Judah, of the seed which the LORD shall give thee of this young woman." Ruth was the great-grandmother of David. This is confirmed in Matthew 1:5 "And Salmon begat Booz of Rachab; and Booz begat Obed of Ruth; and Obed begat Jesse;" |
| V12 - We see "And in process of time" literally, "and the days were multiplied" in Genesis 4:3). Shuah the Canaanite dies but he was comforted (וַיִּנָּ֣חֶם)[8]. But now Judah "went up unto his(ה֗וּא) sheepshearers (גֹּֽזֲזֵ֤י gōzăzê[9] צֹאנוֹ֙ ṣōnōw)[10] with his friend[11] Hirah(וְחִירָ֛ה) the Adullamite(הָעֲדֻלָּמִ֖י)[5]. |
| V12 Hirah[6] has a root that signifies splendor, leading to suggested meanings such as "noble," "distinguished," or "splendid" even "Liberty" possibly in the sense of having liberty over others. |
| But it is the sheepshearers (גֹּֽזֲזֵ֤י gōzăzê צֹאנוֹ֙ ṣōnōw) that is often misunderstood. Again cattle can mean people that work with the herds as well as the domestic animal. Shearing the sheep is collect a share of what is produced as it did with Laban. When Judah was not there Hirah did the work for him. In stated of statues being a symbol of authority it is now a seal on a cord and a staff. Jacob had put away all symbols of these systems of men over men and built altars like Abraham and Melchizedek. Judah was perverting the way of the Malchut which was the way of faith, Hope and Charity. |

Judah goes down
1 And it came to pass at that time, that Judah went down from (וַיֵּ֥רֶד) [12] his brethren, and turned in to(וַיֵּ֛ט)[4] a certain Adullamite(עֲדֻלָּמִ֖י), whose name was Hirah.
Shuah has three sons
2 And Judah saw there a daughter of a certain Canaanite, whose name was Shuah; and he took her, and went in unto her.
3 And she conceived, and bare a son; and he called his name Er.
4 And she conceived again, and bare a son; and she called his name Onan.
5 And she yet again conceived, and bare a son; and called his name Shelah: and he was at Chezib בִכְזִ֖יב Chezib, when she bare him. "disappointing, deceptive, false, or lying"
Tamar
6 And Judah took a wife for Er his firstborn, whose name was Tamar (תָּמָֽר).
7 And Er, Judah's firstborn, was wicked in the sight of the LORD; and the LORD slew him.
Er replaced by Onan
8 And Judah said unto Onan, Go in unto thy brother's wife, and marry her, and raise up seed to thy brother.
9 And Onan knew that the seed should not be his; and it came to pass, when he went in unto his brother's wife, that he spilled it on the ground, lest that he should give seed to his brother.
10 And the thing which he did displeased the LORD: wherefore he slew him also.
Tamar to wait for Shelah
11 Then said Judah to Tamar his daughter in law, Remain a widow at thy father's house, till Shelah my son be grown: for he said, Lest peradventure he die also, as his brethren did. And Tamar went and dwelt in her father's house.
12 And in process of time the daughter of Shuah Judah's wife died; and Judah was comforted, and went up unto his(ה֗וּא) sheepshearers (גֹּֽזֲזֵ֤י gōzăzê צֹאנוֹ֙ ṣōnōw) to Timnath(תִּמְנָֽתָה׃), he and his friend Hirah(וְחִירָ֛ה) the Adullamite(הָעֲדֻלָּמִ֖י).
13 And it was told Tamar(לְתָמָ֖ר), saying, Behold thy father in law goeth up to Timnath(תִמְנָ֖תָה) to shear(גֹּֽזֲזֵ֤י) his sheep(צֹאנוֹ֙).
Shelah was grown
14 And she put her widow's garments off from her, and covered her with a vail, and wrapped herself, and sat in an open place, which is by the way to Timnath; for she saw that Shelah was grown, and she was not given unto him to wife.
15 When Judah saw her, he thought her to be an harlot; because she had covered her face.
A pledge
16 And he turned unto her by the way, and said, Go to, I pray thee, let me come in unto thee; (for he knew not that she was his daughter in law.) And she said, What wilt thou give me, that thou mayest come in unto me?
17 And he said, I will send thee a kid from the flock. And she said, Wilt thou give me a pledge, till thou send it?
18 And he said, What pledge shall I give thee? And she said, Thy signet, and thy bracelets, and thy staff that is in thine hand. And he gave it her, and came in unto her, and she conceived by him.
She went away
19 And she arose, and went away, and laid by her vail from her, and put on the garments of her widowhood.
20 And Judah sent the kid by the hand of his friend the Adullamite, to receive his pledge from the woman's hand: but he found her not.
No harlot
21 Then he asked the men of that place, saying, Where is the harlot, that was openly by the way side? And they said, There was no harlot in this place.
22 And he returned to Judah, and said, I cannot find her; and also the men of the place said, that there was no harlot in this place.
23 And Judah said, Let her take it to her, lest we be shamed: behold, I sent this kid, and thou hast not found her.
With child
24 And it came to pass about three months after, that it was told Judah, saying, Tamar thy daughter in law hath played the harlot; and also, behold, she is with child by whoredom. And Judah said, Bring her forth, and let her be burnt.
25 When she was brought forth, she sent to her father in law, saying, By the man, whose these are, am I with child: and she said, Discern, I pray thee, whose are these, the signet, and bracelets, and staff.
Acknowledged
26 And Judah acknowledged them, and said, She hath been more righteous than I; because that I gave her not to Shelah my son. And he knew her again no more.
The travail of twins
27 And it came to pass in the time of her travail, that, behold, twins were in her womb.
28 And it came to pass, when she travailed, that the one put out his hand: and the midwife took and bound upon his hand a scarlet thread, saying, This came out first.
29 And it came to pass, as he drew back his hand, that, behold, his brother came out: and she said, How hast thou broken forth? this breach be upon thee: therefore his name was called Pharez.
30 And afterward came out his brother, that had the scarlet thread upon his hand: and his name was called Zarah.

- ↑ Covetousness is idolatry
- Colossians 3:5 "Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry: 6 For which things’ sake the wrath of God cometh on the children of disobedience:"
- Ephesians 5:5 "For this ye know, that no whoremonger, nor unclean person, nor covetous man, who is an idolater, hath any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God."
- 1 Corinthians 5:10 "Yet not altogether with the fornicators of this world, or with the covetous, or extortioners, or with idolaters; for then must ye needs go out of the world. 11 But now I have written unto you not to keep company, if any man that is called a brother be a fornicator, or covetous, or an idolater, or a railer, or a drunkard, or an extortioner; with such an one no not to eat."
- For it is written that the tables of dainties provided by rulers of the world are a snare because they cause the masses to bite one another through government systems of legal charity which are covetous practices which are a form of fornication or adultery where the people are devoured as merchandise, curse children and are "entangled again in the yoke of bondage" with the aid of the false religion of the whore who rides the beast.
- ↑ Not exercise authority
- Matthew 20:25 "But Jesus called them unto him, and said, Ye know that the princes of the Gentiles exercise dominion over them, and they that are great exercise authority upon them. But it shall not be so among you:..."
- Mark 10:42 "But Jesus called them to him, and saith unto them, Ye know that they which are accounted to rule over the Gentiles exercise lordship over them; and their great ones exercise authority upon them. But so shall it not be among you:..."
- Luke 22:25 "And he said unto them, The kings of the Gentiles exercise lordship over them; and they that exercise authority upon them are called benefactors. But ye [shall] not [be] so:..."
