What is the significance of the veil from the beginning and what can we learn from understanding why and when it was ripped in twain?

Shredding the Vail

In Mark 15:38 we see in the account of the death of Christ where simultaneously "...the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom."[1]

What is the significance of the veil from the beginning and what can we learn from understanding why and when it was ripped in twain?

What was the significance of this veil being rent from top to bottom?[2]

Is this related to the comments of Jesus concerning putting new wine into old wine skins that were rotten and ready to rupture?[3]

Vailing the truth of the veil

There are lots of interpretations as to the meaning of the renting of this vail from top to bottom at the moment of Jesus' death:

"But, most portentous of all in Judaistic minds, the veil of the temple which hung between the Holy Place and the Holy of Holies was rent from top to bottom, and the interior, which none but the high priest had been permitted to see, was thrown open to common gaze. It was the rending of Judaism, the consummation of the Mosaic dispensation, and the inauguration of Christianity under apostolic administration." James E. Talmage[4]

Jesus and Moses were in agreement. They were collaborators with the precepts of God, His kingdom of God, and His righteousness.

Theologian Timothy Johnson says that the tearing of the temple vail symbolized “the end of the old covenant of atonement through animal sacrifice and the beginning of a 'new covenant'.

That of course is a popular belief but that of course is utter nonsense.

The original covenant of atonement through animal sacrifice was broken with the creation of the system of Corban set up by the Pharisees through the civil power of Herod.

Tertullian in his Against Marcion, 4.42, we are told that Israel's temple had again grown stagnant.

In fact, it was not merely stagnancy but their form of public religion was making the word of God to none effect. This was due to the covetous nature of that system of corban instituted by Herod and the pharisees in opposition to the precepts laid out by Moses from the beginning.

Those changes, because of the leaven of Herod and the Pharisees would degenerate the masses, making them merchandise and curse children.

Vail of faith

The term vail in the Old Testament is from the Hebrew word PeiReishKafTav, poreketh.[5]

The term pareketh is a word from the Hebrew word PeiReishKaf פֶרֶךְ‎ perek[6] meaning "harshness, severity, cruelty".

Why does the word for vail mean "harshness, severity, cruelty" when you remove the letter Tav?

Or maybe a better question is how does a word that means "harshness, severity, cruelty" becomes a vail of protection when you add the letter like Tav which means

  • ת Tav is a Seal of a Higher kingdom or realm through faith. The paradigm keter–malchut “The Crown of Sovereignty” from the Tree of Life spiritually linking worlds or realms through an unseen doorway of faith. The Aleph & Tav are the first and last letters. Without faith

Israel moved out of the system of Egypt where they were in a bondage and were taught by Moses to live by faith of God rather than the force of the government of the Pharaoh.

They had gone into that bondage of Egypt because the brothers of Joseph were jealous and envious of their him. They were willing to deliver their own brother into bondage so by Divine Law they would also go into bondage[7] where a portion of their labor would belong to the government of Pharaoh.

We see this word perek(פֶרֶךְ‎) PeiReishKaf [6] for the first time in:

Exodus 1:13 "And the Egyptians made the children of Israel to serve with rigour <perek> 14 And they made their lives bitter with hard bondage, in morter, and in brick, and in all manner of service in the field: all their service, wherein they made them serve, [was] with rigour <perek>."

This terms perek[6] has an origin that appears to be from Mesopotamia representing the idea of system of forced labor like we find in the cities of blood or a corvee system of statutory bondage like that which was present in the bondage of Egypt after the seven year famine.

The first two letters of perek are Pei and Reish (פַר‎) or par meaning a young bull from a word containing a double Reish parar(פָרַר‎)[8] to break, frustrate, make none effect.

The Corban of the Pharisees was making the word of God to none effect.

Mark 7  "11  But ye say, If a man shall say to his father or mother, It is Corban, that is to say, a gift, by whatsoever thou mightest be profited by me; he shall be free. 12  And ye suffer him no more to do ought for his father or his mother; 13 Making the word of God of none effect through your tradition, which ye have delivered: and many such like things do ye."

That was because that system of Corban was delivering the people who signed up for the welfare tables of the Pharisees and Herod were binding the people because they were a snare and a trap.

In that system of social welfare their labor would be taken away and deposited in the temple treasury. Once the consented by signing up and got the rabbinical baptism of their public priests they would be registered and given a Hebrew name which was recorded by the scribes.

The Baptism of John the Baptist functioned by charity alone unspotted by that world system. It would require a network of ministers chosen by the people and who served the people.

When Israel lived by faith in hope with charity they were protected from the rigor, the "harshness, severity, cruelty" of the bondage of Egypt. The vail was a symbol of that protection.

  • Exodus 26:31 "And thou shalt make a vail [of] blue, and purple, and scarlet, and fine twined linen of cunning work: with cherubims shall it be made: 32 And thou shalt hang it upon four pillars of shittim [wood] overlaid with gold: their hooks [shall be of] gold, upon the four sockets of silver. 33 And thou shalt hang up the vail under the taches, that thou mayest bring in thither within the vail the ark of the testimony: and the vail shall divide unto you between the holy [place] and the most holy."

The veil

Matthew 27:51 "And, behold, the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom; and the earth did quake, and the rocks rent;"
Mark 15:38 "And the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom."
Luke 23:45 "And the sun was darkened, and the veil of the temple was rent in the midst."

Here we see veil from the Greek word katapetasma[9] which was a vail separated the Holy Place from the outer court, while the other veiled the Holy of Holies from the Holy Place.

The dimmed truth

John the Baptist not only spoke against that system set upby Herod and the Pharisees but offered an alternative to that system based on faith and charity rather than the exercise of authority[10] through the force of Legal charity which often establish those cities of blood[11] through covetousness which is idolatry.[12]

Jesus who John the Baptist thought would take his priestly role of restoring the way of righteousness to the people of Judea offering a baptism that took them toward the kingdom of God.

John the Baptist called for the people to think about Religion much differently which we identify as repentance.

Jesus would bring hope to the efforts of John the Baptist but he would also challenge some of the orthodoxy dogmas of Judaism that had crept into the thinking of the priesthood and the masses due to incorrect private interpretations of the teachings of Moses.

The unmooring of the deeper meaning of the metaphors of Moses found so common in the narrative of the Pentateuch had aloud a morass of vain and blind leaders to institute a demoralizing system in conflict with the theme and intent of both Abraham and Moses and all the prophets.

This blindness[13] and darkness of the soul led the people into the error of Balaam and the Nicolaitan.[14]

The unfortunate repetition of history

The modern Church teachers are void of a viable understanding the covenant of God. It should not be difficult to see but they are more fond of their Covenants of the gods of the world than the righteousness of God and His Kingdom.

The animal sacrifice was never about a mindless ritual of killing animals by blood letting any more than casting your bread upon the water is about tossing unleavened bread in the lake.

The altars of Clay and Stone were never about piles of dead stone and mounds of earth.

It was about freewill offerings made by the people who have to take care the needy of society in a daily ministration of pure religion based on that faith in hope with charity.

  7. Cries of anguish
Matthew 7:1-2 “1 ‭Judge not, that ye be not judged. ‭For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again.”
Genesis 42:21-22 "21 And they said one to another, We are verily guilty concerning our brother, in that we saw the anguish of his soul, when he besought us, and we would not hear; therefore is this distress come upon us. 22 And Reuben answered them, saying, Spake I not unto you, saying, Do not sin against the child; and ye would not hear? therefore, behold, also his blood is required."
Proverbs 1:26-32 "26 I also will laugh at your calamity; I will mock when your fear cometh; 27 When your fear cometh as desolation, and your destruction cometh as a whirlwind; when distress and anguish cometh upon you. 28 Then shall they call upon me, but I will not answer; they shall seek me early, but they shall not find me: 29 For that they hated knowledge, and did not choose the fear of the LORD: 30 They would none of my counsel: they despised all my reproof. 31 Therefore shall they eat of the fruit of their own way, and be filled with their own devices. 32 For the turning away of the simple shall slay them, and the prosperity of fools shall destroy them."
Proverbs 1:10-19 (The way of One purse and the Cities of blood.) "10 My son, if sinners entice thee, consent thou not. If they say, Come with us, let us lay wait for blood, let us lurk privily for the innocent without cause: 12 Let us swallow them up alive as the grave; and whole, as those that go down into the pit: 13 We shall find all precious substance, we shall fill our houses with spoil: 14 Cast in thy lot among us; let us all have one purse: 15 My son, walk not thou in the way with them; refrain thy foot from their path: 16 For their feet run to evil, and make haste to shed blood. 17 Surely in vain the net is spread in the sight of any bird. 18 And they lay wait for their own blood; they lurk privily for their own lives. 19 So are the ways of every one that is greedy of gain; which taketh away the life of the owners thereof."
1 Samuel 8:18 “‭And ye shall cry out in that day because of your king which ye shall have chosen you; and the LORD will not hear you in that day.”

Matthew 16:11-12 "How is it that ye do not understand that I spake it not to you concerning bread, that ye should beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees? 12 Then understood they how that he bade them not beware of the leaven of bread, but of the doctrine of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees."

  10. Not exercise authority
Matthew 20:25 "But Jesus called them unto him, and said, Ye know that the princes of the Gentiles exercise dominion over them, and they that are great exercise authority upon them. But it shall not be so among you:..."
Mark 10:42 "But Jesus called them to him, and saith unto them, Ye know that they which are accounted to rule over the Gentiles exercise lordship over them; and their great ones exercise authority upon them. But so shall it not be among you:..."
Luke 22:25 "And he said unto them, The kings of the Gentiles exercise lordship over them; and they that exercise authority upon them are called benefactors. But ye [shall] not [be] so:..."
  11. Cities of blood
Exodus 16:3 "And the children of Israel said unto them, Would to God we had died by the hand of the LORD in the land of Egypt, when we sat by the flesh pots, [and] when we did eat bread to the full; for ye have brought us forth into this wilderness, to kill this whole assembly with hunger."
Genesis 11:4 "And they said, Go to, let us build us a city and a tower, whose top [may reach] unto heaven; and let us make us a name, lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth."
Jeremiah 26:15 "But know ye for certain, that if ye put me to death, ye shall surely bring innocent blood upon yourselves, and upon this city, and upon the inhabitants thereof: for of a truth the LORD hath sent me unto you to speak all these words in your ears."
Isaiah 45:13 "I have raised him up in righteousness, and I will direct all his ways: he shall build my city, and he shall let go my captives, not for price nor reward, saith the LORD of hosts."
Ezekiel 11:3 "Which say, [It is] not near; let us build houses: this [city is] the caldron, and we [be] the flesh."
Ezekiel 7:23 "Make a chain: for the land is full of bloody crimes, and the city is full of violence."
Ezekiel 9:9 "Then said he unto me, The iniquity of the house of Israel and Judah [is] exceeding great, and the land is full of blood, and the city full of perverseness: for they say, The LORD hath forsaken the earth, and the LORD seeth not."
Ezekiel 22:2 "Now, thou son of man, wilt thou judge, wilt thou judge the bloody city? yea, thou shalt shew her all her abominations. 3 Then say thou, Thus saith the Lord GOD, The city sheddeth blood in the midst of it, that her time may come, and maketh idols against herself to defile herself."
Ezekiel 24:6 "Wherefore thus saith the Lord GOD; Woe to the bloody city, to the pot whose scum [is] therein, and whose scum is not gone out of it! bring it out piece by piece; let no lot fall upon it... 9 Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD; Woe to the bloody city! I will even make the pile for fire great."
Hosea 6:8 "Gilead [is] a city of them that work iniquity, [and is] polluted with blood."
Habakkuk 2:8 “‭Because thou hast spoiled many nations, all the remnant of the people shall spoil thee; because of men’s blood, and for the violence of the land, of the city, and of all that dwell therein... ‭12 Woe to him that buildeth a 'town with blood, and stablisheth a city by iniquity!”
  12. Covetousness is idolatry
Colossians 3:5 "Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry: 6 For which things’ sake the wrath of God cometh on the children of disobedience:"
Ephesians 5:5 "For this ye know, that no whoremonger, nor unclean person, nor covetous man, who is an idolater, hath any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God."
1 Corinthians 5:10 "Yet not altogether with the fornicators of this world, or with the covetous, or extortioners, or with idolaters; for then must ye needs go out of the world. 11 But now I have written unto you not to keep company, if any man that is called a brother be a fornicator, or covetous, or an idolater, or a railer, or a drunkard, or an extortioner; with such an one no not to eat."
  13. False prophets and Guru theories
Isaiah 42:16 "And I will bring the blind by a way [that] they knew not; I will lead them in paths [that] they have not known: I will make darkness light before them, and crooked things straight. These things will I do unto them, and not forsake them. 17 They shall be turned back, they shall be greatly ashamed, that trust in graven images, that say to the molten images, Ye [are] our gods. 18 Hear, ye deaf; and look, ye blind, that ye may see."
Isaiah 30:20 "And [though] the Lord give you the bread of adversity, and the water of affliction, yet shall not thy teachers be removed into a corner any more, but thine eyes shall see thy teachers: 21 And thine ears shall hear a word behind thee, saying, This [is] the way, walk ye in it, when ye turn to the right hand, and when ye turn to the left. 22 Ye shall defile also the covering of thy graven images of silver, and the ornament of thy molten images of gold: thou shalt cast them away as a menstruous cloth; thou shalt say unto it, Get thee hence. 23 Then shall he give the rain of thy seed,..."
Matthew 13:13 "Therefore speak I to them in parables: because they seeing see not; and hearing they hear not, neither do they understand."
Matthew 15:14 "Let them alone: they be blind leaders of the blind. And if the blind lead the blind, both shall fall into the ditch."
Luke 4:18 The Spirit of the Lord [is] upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recoveing of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised,
John 9:39 ¶ "And Jesus said, For judgment I am come into this world, that they which see not might see; and that they which see might be made blind."
Luke 6:39 "And he spake a parable unto them, Can the blind lead the blind? shall they not both fall into the ditch? 40 The disciple is not above his master: but every one that is perfect shall be as his master."
Acts 13:11 "And now, behold, the hand of the Lord [is] upon thee, and thou shalt be blind, not seeing the sun for a season. And immediately there fell on him a mist and a darkness; and he went about seeking some to lead him by the hand."
  14. The way of error
    2 Peter 2:15 Which have forsaken the right way, and are gone astray, following the way of Balaam [the son] of Bosor, who loved the wages of unrighteousness;
Jude 1:11 "Woe unto them! for they have gone in the way of Cain, and ran greedily after the error of Balaam for reward, and perished in the gainsaying of Core. 12 These are spots(not "unspotted" like Pure Religion) in your feasts of charity, when they feast with you, feeding themselves without fear: clouds [they are] without water, carried about of winds; trees whose fruit withereth, without fruit, twice dead, plucked up by the roots;"
Revelation 2:14-17 "But I have a few things against thee, because thou hast there them that hold the doctrine of Balaam, who taught Balac to cast a stumblingblock before the children of Israel, to eat things sacrificed unto idols, and to commit fornication ("to permit one’s self to be drawn away by another into idolatry"). 15 So hast thou also them that hold the doctrine of the Nicolaitans, which thing I hate. 16 Repent; or else I will come unto thee quickly, and will fight against them with the sword of my mouth. 17 He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the hidden manna, and will give him a white stone, and in the stone a new name written, which no man knoweth saving he that receiveth [it]."
Ezekiel 16:49 "Behold, this was the iniquity of thy sister Sodom, pride, fulness of bread, and abundance of idleness was in her and in her daughters, neither did she strengthen the hand of the poor and needy."
