Genesis 33

Jacob's dream talks of angels(mal’ăḵê מַלְאֲכֵ֥י)[3] who may be messengers (hammal’āḵîm הַמַּלְאָכִ֔ים )[3] who go up and down is about the form of governance required to become Israel. |

Esau had said, Genesis 27:41, “I will slay my brother Jacob;” and now comes with four hundred men but Jacob trusts in the LORD and arrays his family in an orderly procession using the word ’a·ḥă·rō·nîm אַחֲרֹנִ֔ים twice.[4]
Some will say that Jacob is still concerned with their safety but these positions of his wives and children, was arranged according to their rank and position of importance. It was a show of trust and even respect toward Esau. This was also accompanied with his own actions of humbly bowing with "sevenfold obeisance". This was more a public salute to Esau as a lord in his own right.
Esau seems to hold no grudge and his public acceptance of Jacob and his family seals his position of forgiveness.
All that was his fathers has been his for 20 years and his brother has returned bearing a kings ransom in gifts.
V4 Esau not only runs to embrace his brother but even kissed his brother with genuine affection (as Joseph and Benjamin will be kissed, Genesis 45:14, 15).
V5 Jacob calls himself the servant of Esau and his wife and children the gracious gifts of God, which is not like Laban who would call them his possessions.
V6,7 The procession of these women and their children before Esau is a continued display of respect and trust as they too bow before him. Jacob, as Israel is showing his trust in the God he prayed to in Genesis 32. In verse 12 Jacob heard a response to his prayer.
There has been "a present (offering)[5] for Esau his brother" that was driven ahead and he enquires about this in V8.
V9 "Esau at first declines the gift", but on being urged by Jacob who presses him, and he accepts, in verses 10 and 11. There is a display in words and deeds of good hearts of mutual respect.
V10,11 there is another reference with the face of God which seems to puzzle many translators and commentators and yet may have touched Esau who has been surrounded by rulers who call themselves gods(אֱלֹהִ֖ים ’ĕ-lō-hîm).
To Jacob his life of learning to be trusting in God while indentured to Laban allowed him to move and act according to the nature and will of God. He brought with him the righteous spirit of God that genuinely touched the heart of Esau.
V12-15 Esau offers to aid and protection but Jacob finds Esau's grace the greatest gift. They part friendly, with Esau returning to Seir.

| : This is not the שֵׂעִ֖יר śê‘îr seen in Genesis 32:3 "...unto the land of Seir(שֵׂעִ֖יר ShinAyinYodReish), the country of Edom.(אֱדֽוֹם׃ ’ĕḏōwm AlefDaletVavMem)" Do these letters mean a mountain, a she goat, or shaggy creature, or, or what?
Proverbs 23:7 "For as he thinketh in his heart, so [is] he: Eat and drink, saith he to thee; but his heart [is] not with thee."
|
|
|
* or numbered 08179 the letters שָׂעַר become a gate, door, city, porters;
|
Gates of Liberty or Bondage are passed through by our power of choice but often a lack of knowledge leads to the error of Balaam, which is the error of the Nicolaitan.
|
It may be reasonable to examine the underlying meaning of Seir as a destination which was also figuratively a gate. Lot had sat in a gate, but the gate Jacob would seek did not lead to bondage in Egypt, Sodom, nor back to Babylon where the people become human resources and become confused nor sit in darkness. |
Jacob comes to Succoth
But the place is not called Succoth[6] by verse 17 yet.
The people following Moses would begin to learn in Exodus 33:10 “10 And all the people saw the cloudy pillar stand at the tabernacle[7] by verse 17 door: and all the people rose up and worshipped, every man in his tent door.”
Jacob goes Shalem
From thence he goes to Shalem; where he buys a field for one hundred pieces of money; builds an altar; calls it El-elohe-Israel, V18-20.
V17 And Jacob journeyed נָסַע[8] to Succoth[6] (סֻכֹּ֔תָה), and built him an house, and made booths for his cattle (וּלְמִקְנֵ֙הוּ)". This word VavLamedMemKufNunHeyVav only appears in the one verse.
Jacob is not building tents for their livestock!
In Genesis 13:12 Abram pitched tents(וַיֶּאֱהַ֖ל)[9] in the plain(הַכִּכָּ֔ר) HeyKufKufReish[10] before Sodom. But they explain the significance of this in Genesis 13: 13 "But the men of Sodom [were] wicked and sinners before the LORD exceedingly."
So, these are not sheep and cattle he is making booths for to live in and dwell. The word is from 07069 qana ^הנק^ KufNunHey and represent people originally created of God who were redeemed by Jacob, like Abraham who left Haran years before with many souls.
Was this place was named Succoth סֻכּֽוֹת?[6]
Jacob was builds shelters for his people. He was setting the captives free and returning every man to his family and to his possession.
What would unite them is that altar of El Elohim of Israel so that they were under the protection of Israel's hand.
Come to Peace
V18 "And Jacob came to Shalem(שָׁלֵ֜ם)", or did Jacob come in Peace, as Melchisedec who followed the righteous way of peace. Shalem was no more a city "in the land of Canaan" than Melchisedec was the king of Salem.
The city of Consent
He stopped short of the city of Shechem (שְׁכֶ֗ם šə-ḵem) Sekem spelled ShinKafMem in the land of Canaan. Sekem is a synonym for the word consent and when given the Strong's number 07926 with the same spelling שְׁכֶ֗ם ShinKafMem it may be translated as a thing "shoulder" or "back" or with the abstract meaning of "consent".
Patterns of the Prophets
Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob as Israel did not want to rule over the people but also did not desire the dainties from the tables of rulers. They all stopped short of the city and did not consent to have one purse with them because they had El-Elohe-Israel in the land of Canaan, when he came from Padanaram[11]; and pitched his tent before (פְּנֵ֥י pənê) the city (הָעִֽיר׃ hāîr.).
V19 And bought land for a hundred pieces of silver.
And erected an altar. Abraham had already built an altar in this neighborhood (Genesis 12:7)
El-Elohe-Israel
El-Elohe-Israel El אֵ֖ל - elohe אֱלֹהֵ֥י - yisrael. יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ elohe אֱלֹהֵ֥י with out the end letter Mem is a word that can be translated signifying a foreign god as we see in Genesis 35: 2 and 4 or an angel or judge and is literally referring to Jacob with the name Israel as the high priest of the altar of the God like Melchizedek.
This altar called El-Elohe-Israel was like the Jehovahnissi Altar that would be built by Moses for helping the injured veterans of the war and the widows and orphans often created by war. But this altar served the people who came with Jacob and many who were round about. Jacob was following the ways of Abraham and Isaac and therefore Melchizedek who was the righteous King of Peace. The way of Israel rolls back the stone of the idolatry of the welfare systems dependent on men who exercise authority[12] and covetous practices which makes men merchandise and curse children.
These altars of charity united the people through social bonds of charity. Originally Temples were not buildings but consecrated or sacred ground and an altar marked the location. "He calls it the altar of the Mighty One, the God of Israel(El-Elohe-Israel), in which he signalizes the omnipotence of him who had brought him in safety to the land of promise through many perils... (to this) ... very spot where Abraham, about one hundred and eighty-five years ago, built the first altar he erected in the promised land Genesis 12:6-7." Barnes' Notes on the Bible.
As an altar of Abraham's God it was a place of forgiveness and presents[5] or freewill offerings.[13]
Questions
What does the meaning of Seir have i n common with the grayheaded, a shaggy goat, a terrible storm, a hundredfold, a gate of passage and the way you think and reason?
The Answer: Everything!
| Seir is your journey, the cost of your choices, the hard knocks, the cold wind and darkness of the night, "and thus the whirligig of time brings in his revenges"[14] and may bring with it the wisdom. “29 The glory of young men is their strength: and the beauty of old men is the gray head.” Proverbs 20:29

Esau's 400
1 And Jacob lifted up his eyes, and looked, and, behold, Esau came, and with him four hundred men. And he divided the children unto Leah, and unto Rachel, and unto the two handmaids.
2 And he put the handmaids and their children foremost, and Leah and her children after(אַחֲרֹנִ֔ים ’akḥărōnîm), and Rachel and Joseph hindermost.(אַחֲרֹנִ֔ים ’akḥărōnîm),
Jacob bows and Esau runs
3 And he passed over before them, and bowed himself to the ground seven times, until he came near to his brother.
4 And Esau ran to meet him, and embraced him, and fell on his neck, and kissed him: and they wept.
5 And he lifted up his eyes, and saw the women and the children; and said, Who are those with thee? And he said, The children which God hath graciously given thy servant.
6 Then the handmaidens came near, they and their children, and they bowed themselves.
7 And Leah also with her children came near, and bowed themselves: and after came Joseph near and Rachel, and they bowed themselves.
To find grace
8 And he said, What meanest thou by all this drove which I met? And he (Jacob) said, These are to find grace in the sight of my lord.
9 And Esau said, I have enough, my brother; keep that thou hast unto thyself.
10 And Jacob said, Nay, I pray thee, if now I have found grace in thy sight, then receive my present at my hand: for therefore I have seen thy face, as though I had seen the face of God, and thou wast pleased with me.
Take my blessing
11 Take, I pray thee, my blessing that is brought to thee; because God hath dealt graciously with me, and because I have enough. And he urged him, and he took it.
12 And he (Esau) said, Let us take our journey, and let us go, and I will go before thee.
13 And he said unto him, My lord knoweth that the children are tender, and the flocks and herds with young[15] are with me: and if men should overdrive them one day, all the flock will die.
14 Let my lord, I pray thee, pass over before his servant: and I will lead on softly, according as the cattle that goeth before me and the children be able to endure, until I come unto my lord unto Seir.
15 And Esau said, Let me now leave with thee some of the folk that are with me. And he (Jacob) said, What needeth it? let me find grace in the sight of my lord.
16 So Esau returned that day on his way unto Seir.
Built Succoth
17 And Jacob journeyed נָסַע[8] to Succoth (סֻכֹּ֔תָה), and built him an house, and made booths(עָשָׂ֣ה סֻכֹּ֔ת) for his cattle (וּלְמִקְנֵ֙הוּ):[16] therefore the name of the place is called Succoth סֻכּֽוֹת.[6]
Came to Shalem
18 And Jacob came to Shalem(שָׁלֵ֜ם), a city of Shechem (שְׁכֶ֗ם šə-ḵem), which is in the land of Canaan, when he came from Padanaram[17]; and pitched his tent before (פְּנֵ֥י pənê) the city (הָעִֽיר׃ hāîr.).
Bought Land
19 And he bought a parcel of a field, where he had spread his tent, at the hand of the children of Hamor, Shechem's father, for an hundred pieces of money.
Erected an Altar
20 And he erected there an altar, and called it Elelohe-Israel.[18]

- ↑ Fathers of the earth
- Matthew 23:9 "And call no [man] your father upon the earth: for one is your Father, which is in heaven."
- Matthew 6:8 "Be not ye therefore like unto them: for your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask him. 9 After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. 10 Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as [it is] in heaven. 11 Give us this day our daily bread. 12 And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. 13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen."
- Matthew 7:21 "Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven."
- Matthew 12:50 "For whosoever shall do the will of my Father which is in heaven, the same is my brother, and sister, and mother."
- Luke 3:8 Bring forth therefore fruits worthy of repentance, and begin not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham to [our] father: for I say unto you, That God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham.
- Luke 11:2 And he said unto them, When ye pray, say, Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, as in heaven, so in earth.
- John 4:12 Art thou greater than our father Jacob, which gave us the well, and drank thereof himself, and his children, and his cattle?" See Beersheba.
- John 8:39 They answered and said unto him, Abraham is our father. Jesus saith unto them, If ye were Abraham s children, ye would do the works of Abraham.
- John 14:26 "But the Comforter, [which is] the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you."
- Romans 8:15 "For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father."
- 2 Corinthians 6:18 "And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty."
- 1 John 3:1 ¶ "Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not."
- The Fathers of the earth assume the natural role of the father of the family. Like the Conscripti Patri or the Patronus of Rome who become the benefactors of the masses offering them benefits and dainties from their civil tables of social welfare which are not only a snare, but destroy liberty, making the people merchandise. The Church established by Jesus would seek to have a daily ministration of Pure Religion through fervent charity.

- El-elohe-Israel= "the mighty God of Israel"
