Exodus 33

From PreparingYou

In Egypt under the Pharaoh 20% of your labor belonged to the government of Pharaoh and they called it the Bondage of Egypt. They went into bondage during a famine but the reason was because they did not hear the cries of their brother.[1] They coveted what he had but he forgave them and rose to power. We live in a cause and effect universe and as you judge so shall you be judged. The presence of God will increase this process. In Exodus 33 the people have to do more than clean up their act. They need to clean up their hearts. The love of God is like a consuming fire[2] to those who harbor hate and anger in their heart and mind. Forgiveness is the end of anger. Jesus told us to think a different way and Moses was trying to do the same. What is the way to think, to seek the Kingdom of God and His righteousness? Are we in need of learning the lessons of Exodus?

V1 Did Abraham look for a geographical place and location?[3]
Is Moses and his Ark leading the people to a place or to righteousness?[4]
V2 Will they "drive out the Canaanite..." Was there a peaceful invasion of these people Was everyone being put to death.
V3 why would stiffnecked people consumed? The word stiffnecked is from qasheh[5] meaning cruel from qashah[6] meaning hard.
V5-V6 What are these ornaments(עֲדִי‎)?[7] The text shows ‘eḏyām (עֶדְיָ֖ם) AyinDelatYodMem which only appears in this one text. AyinDelatYod (עֲדִי‎) but is that what it means in the text? Is that what Moses is trying to say?
The word witness (עֵד‎)[8] is in the word ornaments but also in the word congregation.[9]. Other words like prepositions or ad (עֵד‎)[10] meaning ever all are AyinDelat including the word translated prey meaning booty. In 6v the command to put off seems to mean "lay aside altogether." So are the ornaments doodads or is it the hard hearts that you have given a witness of by your deeds or lack of charity in your congregations. Is this like the word for Leaven which also means cruelty?
Is this danger of a consuming fire have to do with the raca[11]("evil tidings, they mourned") Jesus also mentions?[2]
If the ornaments are the about anger toward others which may include envy and jealousy and a lack of forgiveness then how does a raca[11] fool take ornaments off?[12]
V7 So, Moses moves the tabernacle out of the camp and the people have to come to it. Is that a part of the process?
V10 "and all the people rose up and worshipped[13], every man in his tent door."
V13 Moses wants to know "thy way". Some commentaries actually think that he is actually asking directions. The Hebrew word derek (דֶּרֶךְ‎)[14] certainly can mean a road or way but again is that was Moses asking? Moses is asking about The Way of God, creator of the universe and God of Nature. He wants to know Right Reason and to eat of the tree of life.
The phrase "thy way" is from derek (דֶּרֶךְ‎)[14] but the text shows dərāḵeḵā,(דְּרָכֶ֔ךָ) which appears with a double Kaf. A single Kaf means "כ ך Kaf K Crown: To Actualize Potential power from spiritual to physical realm [to cover, strength] (Numeric value: 20)", Moses says he wants to know thy way so "that I may know You"[15] and all this so that Moses "may find grace in thy sight:"(למען אמצא־חן בעיניך).
But his ultimate goal of Moses, his priority, is "and consider that this nation [is] thy people".
Of course the nation cannot be His nation, His people, if they do not do His will, and they must not take up their ornaments on again.

Exodus 33

1 ¶ And the LORD said unto Moses, Depart, and go up hence, thou and the people which thou hast brought up out of the land of Egypt, unto the land which I sware unto Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, saying, Unto thy seed will I give it:

2 And I will send an angel before thee; and I will drive out the Canaanite, the Amorite, and the Hittite, and the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite:

3 Unto a land flowing with milk and honey: for I will not go up in the midst of thee; for thou art a stiffnecked people: lest I consume thee in the way.

Evil tidings they mourned

4 And when the people heard these evil tidings, they mourned: and no man did put on him his ornaments.

5 For the LORD had said unto Moses, Say unto the children of Israel, Ye are a stiffnecked people: I will come up into the midst of thee in a moment, and consume thee: therefore now put off thy ornaments from thee, that I may know what to do unto thee.

6 And the children of Israel stripped themselves of their ornaments by the mount Horeb.

Outside the camp

7 ¶ And Moses took the tabernacle, and pitched it without the camp, afar off from the camp, and called it the Tabernacle of the congregation. And it came to pass, that every one which sought the LORD went out unto the tabernacle of the congregation, which was without the camp.

8 And it came to pass, when Moses went out unto the tabernacle, that all the people rose up, and stood every man at his tent door, and looked after Moses, until he was gone into the tabernacle.

9 And it came to pass, as Moses entered into the tabernacle, the cloudy pillar descended, and stood at the door of the tabernacle, and the LORD talked with Moses.

Worshipped in his tent

10 And all the people saw the cloudy pillar stand at the tabernacle door: and all the people rose up and worshipped[13], every man in his tent door.

Face to face

11 And the LORD spake unto Moses face to face, as a man speaketh unto his friend. And he turned again into the camp: but his servant Joshua, the son of Nun, a young man, departed not out of the tabernacle.

Pleads again for the People

12 ¶ And Moses said unto the LORD, See, thou sayest unto me, Bring up this people: and thou hast not let me know whom thou wilt send with me. Yet thou hast said, I know thee by name, and thou hast also found grace in my sight.

13 Now therefore, I pray thee, if I have found grace in thy sight, shew me now thy way, that I may know thee, that I may find grace in thy sight: and consider that this nation [is] thy people.

14 And he said, My presence shall go [with thee], and I will give thee rest.

15 And he said unto him, If thy presence go not [with me], carry us not up hence.

16 For wherein shall it be known here that I and thy people have found grace in thy sight? [is it] not in that thou goest with us? so shall we be separated, I and thy people, from all the people that [are] upon the face of the earth.

17 And the LORD said unto Moses, I will do this thing also that thou hast spoken: for thou hast found grace in my sight, and I know thee by name.

Show me what I am able to see

18 And he said, I beseech thee, shew me thy glory.

19 And he said, I will make all my goodness pass before thee, and I will proclaim the name of the LORD before thee; and will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and will shew mercy on whom I will shew mercy.

20 And he said, Thou canst not see my face: for there shall no man see me, and live.

21 And the LORD said, Behold, [there is] a place by me, and thou shalt stand upon a rock:

Through the cleft

22 And it shall come to pass, while my glory passeth by, that I will put thee in a clift of the rock, and will cover thee with my hand while I pass by:

23 And I will take away mine hand, and thou shalt see my back parts: but my face shall not be seen.
