V1 the people fear because of the absence of Moses. |
In V1-V2 the people are depositing the wealth of their families into one purse controlled by the Priests. The golden statue function as a reserve fund for the people that binds people together so that they will remain loyal in the face of an enemy. |
In V5 they were still dedicating "feast to the LORD" which is YHWH but they have added a ruling judge over their personal wealth which is now a central treasury in the form of a Golden calf. |
V6 says the people rose up to play but the word translated play (לְצַ֥חֶק) is normally translated mock. I believe that what Moses is saying in this phrase "and rose up to play"(wayyāqumū ləṣaḥêq(ויקמו לצחק)) is that what they were establishing[2] mocked what he had been teaching them. |
We need to understand that Egypt means the place of bondage. In Egypt all the gold was in the hands of the Pharaoh since the famine when the first went into bondage. |
And Moses had the right to rule over the people like the Pharaoh but chose to give them the power of choice through a different form of self government.[3] |
They went into bondage because they envied their brother and did not heed the anguish in his eyes when they sold him into slavery.[4] What made Israel strong is the brotherhood that only comes from hearing their anguish and answering that call through Pure Religion. A Social safety net made of living but unhewn stones funded by a daily ministration of fervent charity will the people remain free according to the perfect law of liberty. |
In verse 6 we see what is called a "burnt offerings"[5], and a "peace offerings"[6] |
When "the people sat"[7] they were choosing to "dwell, remain, sit, abide" differently than Moses had shown them. |
They were choosing "to eat" or rather "to eat, devour, burn up, feed"[8] that which would be served them on a table that was a "snare". Even "to drink"[9] is associated with a definition that means "of drinking cup of God’s wrath, of slaughter, of wicked deeds " |
When they "rose up to play"[10] the verse is suggesting that their deeds "mocked" Moses and his God. |
10V "wrath may wax hot" "I may consume[11] them: and I will make of thee a great nation." |
V21 is saying that the people sinned when they deposited their wealth in this central treasury. That is what these golden statues were. They were reserve funds where the people deposited their gold and everyone would have to defend the statue since that is where their wealth was. The deposited wealth would become a ruling judge of your life because you would not control it but now it would control you and make you loyal. Jesus too was against a central treasury.[12] |
25V What does it mean to be naked and how did Aaron make them naked? The word naked[13] here is translated refused and means to lead, act as leader. It is translated naked here and in 2 Chronicles 28:19 where it again suggests some one failed to restrain someone and led them into sin. In the verse of this Hebrew text it appears as p̄ārua‘ (פָרֻ֖עַ) and p̄ərā‘ōh(פְרָעֹ֣ה). |
What was the sin in the camp of the golden calf? Was it idolatry? Is Idolatry covetousness?[1] They were setting up covetous practices, a partially common purse, a central treasury, that could lead to the Corban of the Pharisees and a returning to Egypt and the way Nicolaitans as all socialist states do. God endowed man with choice and the power to choose.[14] We call that individual power of choice rights and liberty. If we give that choice to others or the power to make choices for us, then we mock God. When the people put their wealth in this institution, this reserve fund set up by Aaron they no longer had direct power of choice over that wealth God had given them when they left the bondage of Egypt. |
26V Men were called out[15] and mostly Levites were the first to come out of the camp of sin. |
Were those men who were called out suppose to go in the camp and kill people? For more details see The "Put to death" article's section "Levites smite". |
V27 It said "and slay(הָרַג)[16] every man his brother, and every man his companion, and every man his neighbour." and in V28 we see they "fell"[17]. The word slay is normally harag (הָרַג) but in the text we see wəhirḡū (וְהִרְג֧וּ) VavHeyReishGimelVav which only appear in this one verse and can be translated as literally "and let kill" or even "let them be ruined". |
We also see a unique statement. "go in and out from entrance to entrance throughout the camp and let kill every man" (עברו ושובו משער לשער במחנה והרגו) where the word we see translated "and out" is shuwb(שׁוּב)[18] which means to "turn back, return" but in the text is seen as wāšūḇū(וָשׁ֜וּבוּ) which only appears in this one verse and would seem to mean "and turn back from" the entrance so they could not come "in the camp". |
The use of the word bammaḥăneh from machaneh commonly translated "in the camp" and the use of wāšūḇū (וָשׁ֜וּבוּ) from shuwb meaning "to return, turn back" all suggests according to V29[19] that the Levites were keeping those people who would not Consecrate[20] themselves again to the LORD from entering the camp. |
By barring them from the camp(also translated host and company or even the "body of people")[21] they were saying that unless they consented and consecrated[20] themselves to the way of the LORD they were barred and had to go their own way. They fell (naphal is not defined as died but "to fall... desert, fall away to, go away to... turn out... to settle, waste away... to cause to fall, fell, throw down... to overthrow)[17] . Does this mean they were barred from the process of people attending to the weightier matters and from the social safety net of the altars of freewill offerings? Were 3000 people free to go their own way even though they might die? |
See Levites smite. |
Questions |
What way were they going? Think about their motivation to create this statute of Gold and how did it corrupt the people? Were they giving up a right endowed by God? Were they empowering others to manage their own wealth?[14] |
Exodus 32
The Golden Calf
1 And when the people saw that Moses delayed to come down out of the mount, the people gathered themselves together unto Aaron, and said unto him, Up, make us gods, which shall go before us; for [as for] this Moses, the man that brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we wot[22] not what is become of him.
2 And Aaron said unto them, Break off the golden earrings, which are in the ears of your wives, of your sons, and of your daughters, and bring them unto me.
Deposit of wealth
3 And all the people brake off the golden earrings which were in their ears, and brought them unto Aaron.
4 And he received them at their hand, and fashioned it with a graving tool, after he had made it a molten calf: and they said, These be thy gods, O Israel, which brought thee up out of the land of Egypt.
5 And when Aaron saw it, he built an altar before it; and Aaron made proclamation, and said, To morrow is a feast to the LORD.
6 And they rose up early on the morrow, and offered burnt offerings, and brought peace offerings; and the people sat[7] down to eat[8] and to drink[9], and rose up to play.[10]
Get thee down
7 ¶ And the LORD said unto Moses, Go, get thee down; for thy people, which thou broughtest out of the land of Egypt, have corrupted[23] themselves:
8 They have turned aside quickly out of the way[24] which I commanded them: they have made them a molten calf, and have worshipped it, and have sacrificed thereunto, and said, These be thy gods, O Israel, which have brought thee up out of the land of Egypt.
9 And the LORD said unto Moses, I have seen this people, and, behold, it is a stiffnecked people:
10 Now therefore let me alone, that my wrath may wax hot against them, and that I may consume them: and I will make of thee a great nation.
Moses pleads
11 And Moses besought the LORD his God, and said, LORD, why doth thy wrath wax hot against thy people, which thou hast brought forth out of the land of Egypt with great power, and with a mighty hand?
12 Wherefore should the Egyptians speak, and say, For mischief did he bring them out, to slay them in the mountains, and to consume them from the face of the earth? Turn from thy fierce wrath, and repent of this evil against thy people.
13 Remember Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, thy servants, to whom thou swarest by thine own self, and saidst unto them, I will multiply your seed as the stars of heaven, and all this land that I have spoken of will I give unto your seed, and they shall inherit it for ever.
14 And the LORD repented of the evil which he thought to do unto his people.
Written both sides
- 15 ¶ And Moses turned, and went down from the mount, and the two tables of the testimony were in his hand: the tables were written on both their sides; on the one side and on the other were they written.
16 And the tables were the work of God, and the writing was the writing of God, graven upon the tables.
17 And when Joshua heard the noise of the people as they shouted, he said unto Moses, There is a noise of war in the camp.[21]
18 And he said, It is not the voice of them that shout for mastery, neither is it the voice of them that cry for being overcome: but the noise of them that sing do I hear.
Broke tablets and drink the gold
19 And it came to pass, as soon as he came nigh unto the camp, that he saw the calf, and the dancing: and Moses’ anger waxed hot, and he cast the tables out of his hands, and brake them beneath the mount.
20 And he took the calf which they had made, and burnt it in the fire, and ground it to powder, and strawed it upon the water, and made the children of Israel drink of it.
Great sin
- 21 ¶ And Moses said unto Aaron, What did this people unto thee, that thou hast brought so great a sin upon them?
22 And Aaron said, Let not the anger of my lord wax hot: thou knowest the people, that they are set on mischief.
23 For they said unto me, Make us gods, which shall go before us: for as for this Moses, the man that brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we wot not what is become of him.
24 And I said unto them, Whosoever hath any gold, let them break it off. So they gave it me: then I cast it into the fire, and there came out this calf.
25 And when Moses saw that the people were naked; (for Aaron had made them naked unto their shame among their enemies:)
Moses calls out the faithful
26 Then Moses stood in the gate of the camp, and said, Who is on the LORD’S side?[15] let him come unto me. And all the sons of Levi gathered themselves together unto him.
27 And he said unto them, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, Put every man his sword by his side, and go in and out from gate to gate throughout the camp, and slay every man his brother, and every man his companion, and every man his neighbour.
28 And the children of Levi did according to the word of Moses: and there fell[17] of the people that day about three thousand men.
29 For Moses had said, Consecrate yourselves[20] to day to the LORD, even every man upon his son, and upon his brother; that he may bestow upon you a blessing this day.
Pleads again for the people
- 30 ¶ And it came to pass on the morrow, that Moses said unto the people, Ye have sinned a great sin: and now I will go up unto the LORD; peradventure I shall make an atonement for your sin.
31 And Moses returned unto the LORD, and said, Oh, this people have sinned a great sin, and have made them gods of gold.
32 Yet now, if thou wilt forgive their sin — ; and if not, blot me, I pray thee, out of thy book which thou hast written.
My angel
33 And the LORD said unto Moses, Whosoever hath sinned against me, him will I blot out of my book.
34 Therefore now go, lead the people unto the place of which I have spoken unto thee: behold, mine Angel shall go before thee: nevertheless in the day when I visit I will visit their sin upon them.
35 And the LORD plagued[25] the people, because they made the calf, which Aaron made.

- Colossians 3:5 "Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry: 6 For which things’ sake the wrath of God cometh on the children of disobedience:"

- 1 Corinthians 5:10 "Yet not altogether with the fornicators of this world, or with the covetous, or extortioners, or with idolaters; for then must ye needs go out of the world. 11 But now I have written unto you not to keep company, if any man that is called a brother be a fornicator, or covetous, or an idolater, or a railer, or a drunkard, or an extortioner; with such an one no not to eat."
- For it is written that the tables of dainties provided by rulers of the world are a snare because they cause the masses to bite one another through government systems of legal charity which are covetous practices which are a form of fornication or adultery where the people are devoured as merchandise, curse children and are "entangled again in the yoke of bondage" with the aid of the false religion of the whore who rides the beast.
