Gerar the place between

Genesis 20: 1 "And Abraham journeyed from thence toward the south country, and dwelled (וַיֵּ֥שֶׁב)[1] between Kadesh[2] and Shur[3], and sojourned in Gerar."[4]

The text is telling us, if we have ears to hear, that Abraham is seeking to dwell between Kadesh, or Qadesh meaning "sacred," set apart or "holy", and Shur the place where the soul may be strengthened in the pilgrim's progress, in the journey toward a spiritual awakening. This is what Abraham has sought even before he separated from his nativity.[5]

Is Gerar a geographical place or state of being?

The state of being defined

Or does the use of the word Gerar allegorically suggest a status, stance, or position of choice and acceptance that there is a God who is in control and we are on a journey in this life between dry and desolate existence and a Holy state?

Is Gerar a place or the journey of the mind and heart in hope of finding the wisdom of God in spirit and truth?

Where

Gerar is found between those two precepts. Remaining in the world of Gerar[4] without being of that world within Gerar, within the cause and effect realm created by God, is trusting in the natural outcome of the power of God to transform creation.

The universe is not merely chaos but a product of a spiritual creative force.[6] If we allow the spirit of God, the spark of the will of God, to guide us,[7] show us the way, God will produce a righteous effect or outcome.

Gimel Reish Reish

The word גְּרָר composed of the Hebrew letters Gimel and a double Reish suggest a place that seeks the light rather than the darkness in which people often sat at the time of Christ.[8]

This place between is Gerar[4] which is not a physical place but the dwelling in the righteousness of God and not the ways of the world. The term Gerar in the text of Genesis 20:1 appears as Beit at the beginning of the Gimel double Reish (בִּגְרָֽר) which expresses the cause and effect of living within the house of the righteousness of spirit and truth.

The spiritual reality is not changed by the physical action but the physical is changed by the spirit. [9]

Do you seek to travel and dwell between dwell between Kadesh[2] and Shur[3], and sojourn Gerar?"[10]

Households

The Hebrew term Gerar גְּרָר in the above text has a Beit at the beginning and is suggestive of the dwelling with or sitting in the house or houshold rather than a citizen of a city-state that are ofren establised within these inhabited places. Those city-states are often called the cities of blood and equated with the cauldrons of socialism that are a snare and a trap.

Cities

These civil societies are established by the Civil law.[11]

Cauldrons and pots

These are the cauldrons and flesh pots of societies and nations that are some times identified as the cities of blood.

Dwellers and Inhabitants

Genesis 261 And there was a famine [12] in the land, beside the first famine that was in the days of Abraham. And Isaac went unto Abimelech king of the Philistines unto Gerar.

2 And the LORD appeared unto him, and said, Go not down into Egypt; dwell(שְׁכֹ֣ן)[13] in the land which I shall tell thee of:[14]

3 Sojourn(גּ֚וּר)[15] in this land, and I will be with thee, and will bless thee; for unto thee, and unto thy seed[16], I will give all these countries, and I will perform the oath which I sware unto Abraham thy father;

The word "dwelled" in Genesis 20:1 we see spelled VavYodShinBeit (וַיֵּ֥שֶׁב) wayyêšeb with an Vav (וַיֵּ֥שֶׁב).[1] It is translated dwell or inhabitant or just sit and abide. It does not mean the same as the same as guwr(גּ֚וּר) "to sojourn, abide, dwell in"[15] nor "shakan" (שְׁכֹ֣ן) "to settle down, abide, dwell, tabernacle, reside"[13] a citizen of a place. The "men of the city" in Sodom had Civil rights but were also human resources.

When Lot dwelt(וַיֵּ֥שֶׁב).[1] in a cave he had no Civil rights accept as Natural rights.

Original and created

Civil rights are such as belong to every citizen of the state or country, or, in a wider sense to all its inhabitants, and are not connected with the organization or the administration of government. They include the rights of property, marriage, protection by laws, freedom of contract, trial by jury, etc.”

[17]

  1. An individual, who becomes a member or person in a political society, also has civil rights, but the origin of those rights, being political, are rights “pertaining or relating to the policy or administration of government.” [18] So, “as otherwise defined, civil rights are rights appertaining to a person in virtue of his citizenship in a state or community. Rights capable of being enforced or redressed in civil action. Also a term applied to certain rights secured to citizens of the United States by the thirteenth and fourteenth amendments to the Constitution, and by various acts of Congress made in pursuance thereof.” [19]

    • יָשַׁב Yasab more than a thousand times across every major section of the Old Testament. Moses repeatedly used the verb to describe the goal of the exodus: “that you may live long in the land” (Deuteronomy 5:33). It frames the conquest narratives—“no one will be able to stand against you in the land where you live” (Deuteronomy 11:25). To dwell at Gerar between Kadesh and Shur in the tent of Shem. In summary, the Old Testament’s pervasive use of this verb binds together space, authority, rest, and relationship, tracing a redemptive arc from Eden’s loss to the New Jerusalem’s glory.

      The related concept of a "wilderness" or a "desert" and might be found under Greek terms like:
      ἔρημος (erēmos - 2048), meaning "desert" or "wilderness" suggests a measure of isolating, fasting, and yearning. Genesis 16, Genesis 20.
      The Greek Eremos corresponding to Shur(שׂוּר‎ ):
      * ερημια eremia 2047 wilderness;
      * ερημος eremos 2048 solitude;
      * ερημοω eremoo 2049 despoliation;
      * ερημωσις eremosis 2050  desolation.
      "The voice of one crying in the (ἔρημος) wilderness" emeros has a metaphorical meaning a state of being which comes with an isolation from unrighteousness.
  4. 4.0 4.1 4.2 01642 Gerar גְּרָר Beginning with Gimel (Cause and effect), followed with a double Reish (spirit and truth) that draws or drags us to Gaza (strength); "Derived from an unused root 01641 גָּרַר‎ garar meaning to drag away or bring up the cud."
    "Gerar" is said to mean "lodging place" or ""sojourning". Abraham sojourned while Lot chose to live in a city-state.
    The cause and effect of living in Sodom would degenerated the people and gave the king power making the masses as human resources.
    But Abraham lived by faith and honor, compassion and sacrifice which brought him along a straight way of "righteousness".
    The way he went was a part of the stories of Abraham and Isaac in the Book of Genesis with his interactions between the patriarchs and the local rulers, notably Abimelech. His willingness to repent and obey with a reliance on God's righteousness made his life fruitful and his prayers powerful.

  16. Seed of Abraham
    • “‭9 And God said unto Abraham, Thou shalt keep my covenant therefore, thou, and thy seed after thee in their generations. ‭10 This is my covenant, which ye shall keep, between me and you and thy seed after thee; Every man child among you shall be circumcised.” Genesis 17:9-10
    • “‭55 As he spake to our fathers, to Abraham, and to his seed for ever.” Luke 1:55
    • “‭‭37 I know that ye are Abraham’s seed; but ye seek to kill me, because my word hath no place in you. ‭38 I speak that which I have seen with my Father: and ye do that which ye have seen with your father. ‭39 They answered and said unto him, Abraham is our father. Jesus saith unto them, If ye were Abraham’s children, ye would do the works of Abraham.” John 8:37-39, AV
    • “‭12 And the father of circumcision to them who are not of the circumcision only, but who also walk in the steps of that faith of our father Abraham, which he had being yet uncircumcised. ‭13 For the promise, that he should be the heir of the world, was not to Abraham, or to his seed, through the law, but through the righteousness of faith. ‭14 For if they which are of the law be heirs, faith is made void, and the promise made of none effect: ‭15 Because the law worketh wrath: for where no law is, there is no transgression. ‭16 Therefore it is of faith, that it might be by grace; to the end the promise might be sure to all the seed; not to that only which is of the law, but to that also which is of the faith of Abraham; who is the father of us all, ‭17 (As it is written, I have made thee a father of many nations,) before him whom he believed, even God, who quickeneth the dead, and calleth those things which be not as though they were.” Romans 4:12-17
