Shechem

There is the city of Shechem (שְׁכֶ֗ם šə-ḵem) in the land of Canaan where Jacob builds an altar before the city on land he buys.

Sekem spelled ShinKafMem is a letter group found in many other words and like many Hebrew words may have more than one meaning in the original message of Moses:

  • 07925. shakam שְׁכֶ֗ם Rise up early, consenting to Take on a task.[1]
  • 07926. shekem שְׁכֶ֗ם Back shoulder, give consent.[2]
  • 07927. Shechem שְׁכֶ֗ם Son of Hamor. a place Sichem or city Shechem.[3]
  • 07928. Shekem שְׁכֶ֗ם Name shechem[4] and synonym for consent.
  • 07929. shikmah שִׁכְמָה shoulder[5] blade that takes a burden.

How can the same letters in Hebrew have so many different meanings.

What does rise up early have to do with a shoulder, a city have to do with consent and a burden?

The appearance of שִׁכְמָה (shikmah) may give us some insight into the nature that seeks the way of God within the text of Job:

"[Then] let mine arm fall from my shoulder blade <מִשִּׁכְמָ֣ה 07929>, and mine arm be broken from the bone." Job 31:22

"Surely I would take it upon my shoulder<07929 שִׁ֭כְמִי>, and bind it as a crown to me." Job 31:36

This is said to "invokes a self-imprecatory (or imposed) curse".

When someone says or write the phrase "shoulder to the grindstone" it is clearly a malaphor (a sort of mixed idiom) that may combine the phrase "nose to the grindstone" and "put your shoulder to the wheel." It may be a mix of two distinct proverbs but the meaning as a metaphor is clear though the effort may include neither the "shoulder" nor a "grindstone".

The Shoulder

The “shoulder" and "blade,” suggest a reference to both physical strength and vulnerability. The Bible is about the law and truth which is spirit. Dry bones are a curse and need the return of the flesh but like the bondage of Egypt it may bring preparation and understanding.[6]

The oath of Job is the submission to the wisdom of the consequences or wrath of God to those who go against the nature of God's love.

His full narrative of deeds and consequences "mirrors ancient Near-Eastern judicial formulas" in acceptance of the natural consequences of his absent virtue as a Spiritual Truth He knows all life and strength is Granted by God:

"Shoulders symbolize might (Psalms 18:34), bearing burdens (Numbers 4:15) and governmental authority (“the government will be on His shoulders,” Isaiah 9:6).

Shikmah reminds of our original "Stewardship and Accountability" to divine scrutiny and trust where any "breach invites proportionate loss (Galatians 6:7)."

We are often required bear burdens—Exodus 12:34; Psalms 81:6. The Bible may give us remembrances Exodus 28:12: that symbolize a righteous Governance (Isaiah 9:6; Isaiah 22:22 and consequences for submission or rebellion.[7]

Right Shoulder

By giving the right shoulder, the worshiper symbolically surrendered their power and ability to serve to God to the priest who oversees the welfare of Israel.

The Breast offering[8] (waved) symbolizes affection, love, and the heart. The Right Shoulder (heaved) symbolizes strength, action, and service..

Exodus 29:22 Also thou shalt take of the ram the fat and the rump, and the fat that covereth the inwards, and the caul [above] the liver, and the two kidneys, and the fat that [is] upon them, and the right[9] shoulder[10]; for it [is] a ram of consecration:

Leviticus 7:33 He among the sons of Aaron, that offereth the blood of the peace offerings, and the fat, shall have the right[9] shoulder[10] for [his] part.

Leviticus 9:21 And the breasts and the right[9] shoulder[10] Aaron waved [for] a wave offering before the LORD; as Moses commanded.

  6. Cut off
    • Matthew 18:8 Wherefore if thy hand or thy foot offend thee, cut them off, and cast [them] from thee: it is better for thee to enter into life halt or maimed, rather than having two hands or two feet to be cast into everlasting fire.
    • Mark 9:43 And if thy hand offend thee, cut it off: it is better for thee to enter into life maimed, than having two hands to go into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched: 44 Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched. 45 And if thy foot offend thee, cut it off: it is better for thee to enter halt into life, than having two feet to be cast into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched: 46 Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched. 47 And if thine eye offend thee, pluck it out: it is better for thee to enter into the kingdom of God with one eye, than having two eyes to be cast into hell fire: 48 Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched. 49 For every one shall be salted with fire, and every sacrifice shall be salted with salt. 50 Salt [is] good: but if the salt have lost his saltness, wherewith will ye season it? Have salt in yourselves, and have peace one with another.
  7. Zephaniah 3:1-2 portrays a “rebellious and defiled” city that “draws no near”; the Hebrew idiom “turn a stubborn shoulder” (Zechariah 7:11) underscores moral posture.
  8. The waved breast offering
    • Exodus 29:26 And thou shalt take the breast of the ram of Aaron's consecration, and wave it [for] a wave offering before the LORD: and it shall be thy part. 27 And thou shalt sanctify the breast of the wave offering, and the shoulder of the heave offering, which is waved, and which is heaved up, of the ram of the consecration, [even] of [that] which [is] for Aaron, and of [that] which is for his sons:
    • Leviticus 7:30 His own hands shall bring the offerings of the LORD made by fire, the fat with the breast, it shall he bring, that the breast may be waved [for] a wave offering before the LORD.
    • Leviticus 7:34 For the wave breast and the heave shoulder have I taken of the children of Israel from off the sacrifices of their peace offerings, and have given them unto Aaron the priest and unto his sons by a statute for ever from among the children of Israel.
    • Leviticus 8:29 And Moses took the breast, and waved it [for] a wave offering before the LORD: [for] of the ram of consecration it was Moses part; as the LORD commanded Moses.
    • Leviticus 10:14 And the wave breast and heave shoulder shall ye eat in a clean place; thou, and thy sons, and thy daughters with thee: for [they be] thy due, and thy sons due, [which] are given out of the sacrifices of peace offerings of the children of Israel. 15 The heave shoulder and the wave breast shall they bring with the offerings made by fire of the fat, to wave [it for] a wave offering before the LORD; and it shall be thine, and thy sons with thee, by a statute for ever; as the LORD hath commanded.
    • Numbers 6:20 And the priest shall wave them [for] a wave offering before the LORD: this [is] holy for the priest, with the wave breast and heave shoulder: and after that the Nazarite may drink wine.
    • Numbers 18:18 And the flesh of them shall be thine, as the wave breast and as the right shoulder(heave) are thine.
