The Book of Leviticus is about those "He called" to become the Church in the wilderness and their instructions concerning the seeking of the kingdom of God and the way of the righteousness of God for the the exercise of Pure Religion for the people in free assemblies and the priests in a network of Levites. The Called out of Christ would also institute a similar system of Lively Stones of a Living Altar through a daily ministration of fervent charity to provide all care for early Christians who would not eat at the tables of the social welfare system operate through the temples of Rome and the governments of the world because David, Paul, Peter warned that those dainties were a not only the wages of unrighteousness of a Corban that made the word of God to none effect but were also a snare and a trap that was capable of entangling the masses as captives and merchandise through covetous practices again in the bondage of Egypt. They knew that the free bread of those systems of the word were provided by men who called themselves benefactors but exercise authority one over the other.[1]

V1 And Nadab and Abihu, the sons of Aaron, took either of them his censer(מַחְתָּת֗וֹ)[2], and put fire therein, and put incense(קְטֹ֑רֶת)[3] thereon, and offered strange(זוּר‎),[4] fire(אֵשׂ)[5] before the LORD, which he commanded[6] them not.
Fire and Strange fire and Divine fire
Reasons given for the fate of Nadab[7] and Abihu[8] the first sons of Aaron:
  1. entered while intoxicated
  2. lacking adequate covering.
  3. Fire from wrong source.
  4. They contention with brethren.
  5. They remained unmarried out of pride.
  6. Was their death related to weakness of Aaron seen with the Golden calf.
  7. Nadab and Abihu had been warned about serving their own pleasure.
Writers and scholars struggle for a Reason for their "death":
  1. “wine and strong drink” are seen by some theological or homiletic interpreters metaphorically as anything that impairs discernment; e.g., pride, passions, moral compromise, carelessness (without due diligence). Drinking Holiness at the well of Beersheba.[9]
  2. inadequate covering: Priestly garments (Exodus 28) were to cover nakedness see breeches.[10]
  3. Divine fire comes from the presence of God.
  4. contention appears to be assumed because they took separate censer (מַחְתָּה‎ machtah)[2]. The word for censor in the text appears as מַחְתָּת֗וֹ with a double Tav which appears over and over with the rebellion of Korah where is Moses told everyman his censor an then a fire destroyed many. Was it Strange fire or Divine fire or is their a difference. Was the contention from their lack of counsel?[11]
  5. "Celibate choice" is neither natural nor obedient since we are commanded to be fruitful. is not a direct result of biblical statements. Again this conjecture relies on extra Rabbinical interpretations.[12]
  6. The weakness of Aaron was when he submitted to the people position to the will of God. The Great sin from the beginning to the end.
  7. "Not my will by thine" is the theme and prayer of the Priest of all priests. The whole Bible and certainly Leviticus 8–9 states everything was to be done “as the Lord commanded”.
"took either of them his censer(מַחְתָּת֗וֹ)[2], and put fire therein, and put incense(קְטֹ֑רֶת)[3] thereon, and offered strange(זוּר‎),[4] fire(אֵשׂ)[5] before the LORD, which he commanded them not."
6 And Moses said unto Aaron, and unto Eleazar and unto Ithamar, his sons, Uncover not your heads, neither rend your clothes; lest ye die, and lest wrath come upon all the people:
  • Two consequences are listed, death and wrath on all the people.
What are the two things not to do and might they produce the two consequences?
  • Uncover not your heads, neither rend your clothes
First: These acts could be part of morning which are to invoke pity, or victim hood, e.g. a call for empathy and even praise from the people.
Second: Their authority is from two sources. One is God who gives them a head covering and the other is their garments including their breeches sown by the people. To uncover your head is to act by your own will and not the will of God and to tear the garments sown by the people is to betray their trust.
V9 The rituals and ceremonies were the tables that were the welfare of the people. Rightly dividing its provision required a strict prohibition of neglect, abuse, or favoritism. It required spiritual discern in this divine service.

The Death of Nadab and Abihu

1 And Nadab[7] and Abihu[8], the sons of Aaron, took either of them his censer(מַחְתָּת֗וֹ)[2], and put fire therein, and put incense(קְטֹ֑רֶת)[3] thereon, and offered strange(זוּר‎),[4] fire(אֵשׂ)[5] before the LORD, which he commanded[6] them not.

2 And there went out fire(אֵשׂ)[5] from the LORD, and devoured them, and they died (way·yā·mu·ṯū, וַיָּמֻ֖תוּ)[13] before the LORD.

3 Then Moses said unto Aaron, This is it that the LORD spake, saying, I will be sanctified in them that come nigh me, and before all the people I will be glorified. And Aaron held his peace.

Carry your brethren

4 And Moses called Mishael[14] and Elzaphan,[15] the sons of Uzziel the uncle of Aaron, and said unto them, Come near, carry your brethren from before the sanctuary out of the camp.

5 So they went near, and carried them in their coats out of the camp; as Moses had said.

Eleazar and Ithamar

6 And Moses said unto Aaron, and unto Eleazar and unto Ithamar, his sons, Uncover not your heads, neither rend your clothes; lest ye die, and lest wrath come upon all the people: but let your brethren, the whole house of Israel, bewail the burning which the LORD hath kindled.

7 And ye shall not go out from the door of the tabernacle of the congregation, lest ye die: for the anointing oil of the LORD is upon you. And they did according to the word of Moses.

Drunk on wine

8 And the LORD spake unto Aaron, saying,

9 Do not drink wine nor strong drink, thou, nor thy sons with thee, when ye go into the tabernacle of the congregation, lest ye die: it shall be a statute[16] for ever throughout your generations:

10 And that ye may put difference between holy and unholy, and between unclean and clean;

Teach the children

11 And that ye may teach the children of Israel all the statutes which the LORD hath spoken unto them by the hand of Moses.

12 And Moses spake unto Aaron, and unto Eleazar and unto Ithamar, his sons that were left, Take the meat offering that remaineth of the offerings of the LORD made by fire, and eat it without leaven beside the altar: for it is most holy:

13 And ye shall eat it in the holy place, because it is thy due, and thy sons' due, of the sacrifices of the LORD made by fire: for so I am commanded.

Clean wave and heave

14 And the wave breast and heave shoulder shall ye eat in a clean place; thou, and thy sons, and thy daughters with thee: for they be thy due, and thy sons' due, which are given out of the sacrifices of peace offerings of the children of Israel.

15 The heave shoulder and the wave breast shall they bring with the offerings made by fire of the fat, to wave it for a wave offering before the LORD; and it shall be thine, and thy sons' with thee, by a statute for ever; as the LORD hath commanded.

Deal of the goat

16 And Moses diligently sought the goat (שְׂעִ֣יר)[17] of the sin offering, and, behold, it was burnt: and he was angry with Eleazar and Ithamar, the sons of Aaron which were left alive, saying,

17 Wherefore have ye not eaten the sin offering in the holy place, seeing it is most holy, and God hath given it you to bear the iniquity of the congregation, to make atonement for them before the LORD?

18 Behold, the blood of it was not brought in within the holy place: ye should indeed have eaten it in the holy place, as I commanded.

19 And Aaron said unto Moses, Behold, this day have they offered their sin offering and their burnt offering before the LORD; and such things have befallen me: and if I had eaten the sin offering to day, should it have been accepted in the sight of the LORD?

20 And when Moses heard that, he was content.
