Leviticus 4

The Book of Leviticus is about those "He called" to become the Church in the wilderness and their instructions concerning the seeking of the kingdom of God and the way of the righteousness of God for the the exercise of Pure Religion for the people in free assemblies and the priests in a network of Levites. The Called out of Christ would also institute a similar system of Lively Stones of a Living Altar through a daily ministration of fervent charity to provide all care for early Christians who would not eat at the tables of the social welfare system operated through the temples of Rome and the governments of the world because David, Paul, Peter warned that those dainties were a not only the wages of unrighteousness of a Corban that made the word of God to none effect but were also a snare and a trap that was capable of entangling the masses as captives and merchandise through covetous practices again in the bondage of Egypt. They knew that the free bread of those systems of the word were provided by men who called themselves benefactors but exercise authority one over the other.[1]

2 "Speak unto the children (or son בְּנֵ֣י beny) of Israel,"
Hebrew word said to be בֵּן occurs roughly 4,932 times in the Old Testament. The word here בְּנֵ֣י benay appears with the Yod 11 to 15 times. While the core sense is “son,” the term (with almost 150 different letter combinations) embraces biological, legal, covenantal, royal, communal, and prophetic dimensions, each enriching the unfolding revelation of God’s redemptive program to those who will draw near and recieve His divine spark.
The phrase “sons of Israel” (over 600 occurrences) binds twelve tribes into one covenant family, reinforcing solidarity and shared destiny and spirit.
The directive is, "If a soul shall sin through ignorance(ḇišḡāḡāh (בִשְׁגָגָה֙)[2] against any of the commandments[3] ignorance is also translated unintentionally(ḇišḡāḡāh (בִשְׁגָגָה֙)[2]. The root word is "שְׁגָגָה denotes an act committed “by mistake,” “inadvertently,” or “unintentionally.”
The double Gimel from שָׁגַג‎ shagag suggest the act or practice or sin contrary to the will of God includes a cause and effect on a spiritual and physical level, in spirit and truth. See Corban.
The word never softens the seriousness of sin; rather, it distinguishes sins of ignorance from those of defiance in order to show how a holy God provides a measured yet sufficient atonement."
Even the “common people” required a sin offering when they sinned unintentionally. “If anyone of the common people sins unintentionally … he must bring a female goat without blemish for the sin he has committed” (Leviticus 4:27-28).
This legal principle is expressed by the Latin phrases Ignorantia juris[4] non excusat or Ignorantia legis[5] neminem excusat.
When the sin is committed collectively as we will see in congregational sins in Numbers 15:24-29.
In Numbers 35:11, 15 and Joshua 20:3, 9 apply שְׁגָגָה to homicide. The accidental killer could flee to a city of refuge which was part of their system of appeal courts "find refuge from the avenger of blood” (Joshua 20:3).
V27 The common people is from הָאָֽרֶץ׃ hā’āreṣ and the root word erets AlefReishTzadik אֶרֶץ can designate the physical planet, the inhabitable world, national territory, soil or ground, and even the realm of the dead (as poetic parallel to “dust” or “Sheol”).
Context determines whether the term eret is best rendered “earth,” “land,” or “ground,” yet each nuance retains the idea of a divinely created, ordered domain under God’s sovereign rule.
With roughly 2,503 appearances, אֶרֶץ is woven into every genre of the Old Testament. Genesis to Malachi employ the word to speak of cosmic origins, covenant possession, moral accountability, eschatological renewal, daily agriculture, royal geopolitics, and personal burial plots. Its frequency underscores how central “land/earth” is to biblical revelation and redemptive history.
Verse 31
Unique instruction about the fat and fire
What makes it sweet at the burning?
וְאֶת־כָּל־חֶלְבָּ֣הּ יָסִ֗יר כַּאֲשֶׁ֨ר הוּסַ֣ר חֵלֶב֮ מֵעַ֣ל זֶ֣בַח
And he shall take away all the fat thereof, as the fat is taken away from off the sacrifice(zeḇaḥ זֶ֣בַח)[6]
  • The first word And is VavAlefTav (וְאֶת־)
with Vav representing the meaning of And.
The letters אֶת AlefTav[7], seldom translated, suggests that something is modified by presence of the divine.
  • The phrase "all the fat" (כָּל־חֶלְבָּ֣הּ) is where the word fat cheleb חֶלֶב embodies a dual message of:
  1. abundant blessing from God and
  2. the demand that the best return to Him
in the form of righteous stewardship.
The same letters for the word fat(חֶלֶב‎)[8] also mean milk(חֶלֶב‎)[9] and is a metaphor for abundance.
The fat, whether literally or figuratively; is the richest or choice or valued part but what makes it a sweet savour is that it is a peace offerings(hašəlāmîm הַשְּׁלָמִים֒)[10] voluntarily given like Melchizedek king of Salem.
V34 Why does the priest take of the blood of the sin offering with his finger, and put it upon the horns of the altar of burnt offering?
Is the life in the blood? If the sacrifice upon the altar actual a righteous social safety net for the care of the needy then its purpose is to give life.
What ever the priest's finger represents or means it is to distribute the blood, i.e. to give life.
But in any case all the life is to be poured out to all the stones of the altar from the top to the bottom of the altar.
When the priest burns it in Fire, and not strange fire, the value is given where it may be used wisely, fervently to bear fruit.
Remember that the sacrifices were to bring the people together in a covenant society of love through freewill sacrifice not the forced scarifies of rulers that are a snare and a trap.
The Mutual Pledge System[11] such as that of ancient Israel or later the Anglo-Saxon England Communities which were divided into tithings (10 families).
Every male over and accepted age (from 12 to 21) was responsible for his neighbor's conduct and had to raise a "hue and cry" (shouting announcing the need for help or attention) to pursue, subdue, or ostracize a criminal element from the community.
The right to bear arms was the obligation to bear arms.
Without the Corban of Christ people will depend upon the legal charity of the Benefactors of the world, the fathers of the earth who exercise authority[1] one over the other, leading people back into idolatry[12] and bondage as merchandise.[13]
Bullock
First place we see bullock in Leviticus 1[14] it is from Baqar.[15]
The same root letters also appear as
01239 בָּקַר‎ baqar v to seek;[16]
01240 בְּקַר‎ bëqar (Aramaic) v to seek, enquire;[17]
01241 בָּקָר‎ baqar herd;[18]
01242 בֹּקֶר‎ boqer morning.[19]
06499 פַר (par) refers to a mature male bovine—“bull” or “young bull”—appearing about 133 times across the Old Testament. Its size, strength, and economic value made the gravity of sin and foreshadowed the cost of redemption and atonement. It was never to represent a purchase but a conformity to the sacrificial nature of and compatibility with the love of Christ rather than merely a claim of a love for Christ.
07794 שׁוֹר‎ showr designates the domesticated bovine.

Laws for Sin Offerings

1 And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,

2 Speak unto the children of Israel, saying, If a soul[20] shall sin through ignorance(ḇišḡāḡāh (בִשְׁגָגָה֙))[2] against any of the commandments[3] of the LORD concerning things which ought not to be done, and shall do against any of them:

Priest sin

3 If the priest that is anointed(הַמָּשִׁ֛יחַ)[21] do sin according to the sin of the people; then let him bring[22] for his sin, which he hath sinned, a young bullock[18] without blemish unto the LORD for a sin offering.

4 And he shall bring the bullock(הַפָּ֗ר, happār)[23] unto the door of the tabernacle of the congregation before the LORD; and shall lay his hand upon the bullock's head, and kill[24] the bullock before the LORD.

Priest anointed

5 And the priest that is anointed shall take of the bullock's blood, and bring it to the tabernacle of the congregation:

6 And the priest shall dip his finger (אֶצְבָּע֖וֹ)[25] in the blood, and sprinkle (וְהִזָּ֨ה)[26] of the blood seven times before the LORD, before the vail of the sanctuary.

Altar horns

7 And the priest shall put some of the blood upon the horns of the altar of sweet incense before the LORD, which is in the tabernacle of the congregation; and shall pour all the blood of the bullock at the bottom of the altar of the burnt offering, which is at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation.

8 And he shall take off from it all the fat of the bullock for the sin offering; the fat that covereth the inwards, and all the fat that is upon the inwards,

9 And the two kidneys[27], and the fat that is upon them, which is by the flanks, and the caul above the liver, with the kidneys, it shall he take away,

10 As it was taken off from the bullock[28] of the sacrifice of peace offerings: and the priest shall burn[29] them upon the altar of the burnt offering.

11 And the skin of the bullock, and all his flesh, with his head, and with his legs, and his inwards, and his dung,

Without the camp

12 Even the whole bullock shall he carry forth without the camp unto a clean place, where the ashes are poured out, and burn him on the wood with fire: where the ashes are poured out shall he be burnt.

13 And if the whole congregation of Israel sin through ignoranceyišgū יִשְׁגּ֔וּ), and the thing be hid from the eyes of the assembly, and they have done somewhat against any of the commandments[3] of the LORD concerning things which should not be done, and are guilty;

When the sin is known

14 When the sin, which they have sinned against it, is known, then the congregation shall offer a young bullock for the sin, and bring him before the tabernacle of the congregation.

Elders of the congregation

15 And the elders (zaqen זִקְנֵ֨י)[30] of the congregation(ehah הָעֵדָ֧ה)[31] shall lay their hands upon the head of the bullock before the LORD: and the bullock(happār הַפָּ֖ר)[32] (+ untranslated אֶת־ or AlefTav) shall be killed before the LORD.

16 And the priest that is anointed shall bring of the bullock's blood to the tabernacle of the congregation:

17 And the priest shall dip his finger in some of the blood, and sprinkle it seven times before the LORD, even before the vail (happārōḵeṯ :הַפָּרֹֽכֶת)[33] plus (untranslated אֶת־ or AlefTav)

The Horns

18 And he shall put some of the blood upon the horns of the altar which is before the LORD, that is in the tabernacle of the congregation, and shall pour out all the blood at the bottom of the altar of the burnt offering, which is at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation.

19 And he shall take all his fat from him, and burn it upon the altar.

20 And he shall do with the bullock as he did with the bullock for a sin offering, so shall he do with this: and the priest shall make an atonement for them, and it shall be forgiven them.

21 And he shall carry forth the bullock without the camp, and burn him as he burned the first bullock: it is a sin offering for the congregation.

22 When a ruler[34] hath sinned, and done somewhat through ignorance(ḇišḡāḡāh (בִשְׁגָגָה֙))[2] against any of the commandments[3] of the LORD his God concerning things which should not be done, and is guilty;

Knowledge of sin

23 Or if his sin, wherein he hath sinned, come to his knowledge; he shall bring his offering, a kid of the goats, a male without blemish:

24 And he shall lay his hand upon the head of the goat, and kill it in the place where they kill the burnt offering before the LORD: it is a sin offering.

25 And the priest shall take of the blood of the sin offering with his finger, and put it upon the horns of the altar of burnt offering, and shall pour out his blood at the bottom of the altar of burnt offering.

26 And he shall burn all his fat upon the altar, as the fat of the sacrifice of peace offerings: and the priest shall make an atonement for him as concerning his sin, and it shall be forgiven him.

Common ignorance

27 And if any one of the common people sin through ignorance, while he doeth somewhat against any of the commandments[3] of the LORD concerning things which ought not to be done, and be guilty;

28 Or if his sin, which he hath sinned, come to his knowledge: then he shall bring his offering, a kid of the goats, a female without blemish, for his sin which he hath sinned.

29 And he shall lay his hand upon the head of the sin offering, and slay the sin offering in the place of the burnt offering.

bloody finger

30 And the priest shall take of the blood thereof with his finger, and put it upon the horns of the altar of burnt offering, and shall pour out all the blood thereof at the bottom of the altar.

Take away the fat

31 And he shall take away all the fat thereof, as the fat is taken away from off the sacrifice(zeḇaḥ זֶ֣בַח)[6] of peace offerings(hašəlāmîm הַשְּׁלָמִים֒)[10]; and the priest shall burn it upon the altar for a sweet savour unto the LORD; and the priest shall make an atonement for him, and it shall be forgiven him.

A female

32 And if he bring a lamb for a sin offering, he shall bring it a female without blemish.

Sin and burnt offering

33 And he shall lay his hand upon the head of the sin offering, and slay it for a sin offering in the place where they kill the burnt offering.

Pour at the bottom

34 And the priest shall take of the blood of the sin offering with his finger, and put it upon the horns of the altar of burnt offering, and shall pour out all the blood thereof at the bottom of the altar:

35 And he shall take away all the fat thereof, as the fat of the lamb is taken away from the sacrifice of the peace offerings; and the priest shall burn them upon the altar, according to the offerings made by fire unto the LORD: and the priest shall make an atonement for his sin that he hath committed, and it shall be forgiven him.
