Many scholars and commentators note that these regulations would have provided real-world protection in an ancient context without "modern medicine, antibiotics, or hygiene standards" but these were the standards:
|
Why distinction of male female child? A significant percentage of baby girls experience minor vaginal bleeding (withdrawal bleeding) in the first few days after birth due to sudden loss of maternal hormones. The child is already a vessel of the next generation. There was going to be a physical circumcision and male children which were also critical but played a different role to society.
Health and hygiene considerations are widely seen as a plausible and practical benefit of the rules in Leviticus 12 (and the broader purity laws in Leviticus 11–15). Those who unmoor the metaphors in the writings of Moses will imagine that the form is the primary emphasis in the text. They will focus on the Rituals and ceremonies and imagine that the external makes the internal pure and maintains holiness before God when the opposite is true is a form apostasy where the neglect of spiritual substance becomes witchcraft, paganism, and idolatry.
It is not the circumcision of the flesh but that of the heart.[2] It is not the leaven in the bread but the oppression in the system of welfare by rulers that becomes a snare and a trap. For Christ did not warn us of the yeast used by Herod and the Pharisees but the use of force and dependence upon rulers who exercise authority to provide a daily ministration of covetous practices.
Those who chase the ritual and the form do build cities and establish civil law. But do not build cities of righteousness.[3] They end up building cities of blood.[4]
Mary followed them after Jesus’ birth (Luke 2:22–24),
This chapter of Leviticus 12 is a very short chapter with only 8 verses while the next Leviticus 13 is a long chapter (59 verses) and gives detailed instructions to the priests for diagnosing various skin conditions.
Sacrifice for the good of others was always a part o the way of Moses. It was the eucharist or thanksgiving of the Song of Moses. See Turtledove Smoking furnace of Abraham brought with it burning light with out the voluntary sacrifice darkness would come.
The interpretation that biblical sacrifices were a divinely ordained system of communal welfare and charity, rather than merely bloody rituals. Without that choice of charity for others there will come darkness. The social bonds oof a free society will be weakened. After the Temple's destruction, Rabbi Johanan ben Zakkai (85 CE, a student of Hillel the Elder) famously taught, following the destruction of the Second Temple, that "acts of loving-kindness (gemilut chassadim) are now the atonement". But of course there was never any power in the ritual any more than there is power in water baptism. To think so is witchcraft and Pagan superstition which is the strong delusion of the Pharisees and the opiate of the religious fool.
The Prophets declared, "I desire mercy, not sacrifice" (Hosea 6:6), a sentiment echoed by Jesus and central to the idea that ethical living supersedes ritual.[5]
Even the Talmud and some Sages who would study and be diligent[6] in the righteousness in the way were "as if he had brought a sacrifice," and one who gives charity is "as if he had offered a sacrifice." The tithe (ma'aser) was explicitly but not solely used to support the Levites but also the poor, the stranger, the widow, and the orphan (Deuteronomy 14:28-29).
Even the modern Rabbi Jonathan Sacks1 “taught that prayer, study, and tzedakah (charity) are the post-Temple substitutes for sacrifice”. Paul said Charity was critical.[7] But when the people came back from the temple in Ezra 3:12 and 13 it appears the “ancient” ways[8] were not followed and they built a temple and followed ways not exactly intended by Moses and
The idea that biblical sacrifices and altars were metaphors for a system of social welfare was not "a snare and a trap" and did not curse children with covetous practices but funded by voluntary charity, rather than merely literal animal sacrifice. The sacrifice with stone altars is a symbolic interpretation supported by some theological and historical sources, though it is not the primary meaning in the literal text which was an allegory.

Birth and circumcised
1 And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,
Male child
2 Speak unto the children of Israel, saying, If a woman have conceived seed, and born a man child: then she shall be unclean seven days; according to the days of the separation for her infirmity shall she be unclean.
3 And in the eighth day the flesh of his foreskin shall be circumcised.
4 And she shall then continue in the blood of her purifying three and thirty days; she shall touch no hallowed thing, nor come into the sanctuary, until the days of her purifying be fulfilled.
5 But if she bear a maid child, then she shall be unclean two weeks, as in her separation: and she shall continue in the blood of her purifying threescore and six days.
Sacrifice of appreciation and celebration
6 And when the days of her purifying are fulfilled, for a son, or for a daughter, she shall bring a lamb of the first year for a burnt offering, and a young[9] pigeon,[10] or a turtledove, for a sin offering, unto the door of the tabernacle of the congregation, unto the priest:
7 Who shall offer it before the LORD, and make an atonement for her; and she shall be cleansed from the issue of her blood. This is the law for her that hath born a male or a female.
8 And if she be not able to bring a lamb, then she shall bring two turtles < תֹרִ֛ים ṯōrîm [7] 08449>, or two young[9] pigeons[10] ; the one for the burnt offering, and the other for a sin offering: and the priest shall make an atonement for her, and she shall be clean.

- Romans 2:27 And shall not uncircumcision which is by nature, if it fulfil the law, judge thee, who by the letter and circumcision dost transgress the law? 28 For he is not a Jew, which is one outwardly; neither [is that] circumcision, which is outward in the flesh: 29 But he [is] a Jew, which is one inwardly; and circumcision [is that] of the heart, in the spirit, [and] not in the letter; whose praise [is] not of men, but of God.
- Colossians 2:11 In whom also ye are circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, in putting off the body of the sins of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ:
- Matthew 23:25 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye make clean the outside of the cup and of the platter, but within they are full of extortion and excess. 26 [Thou] blind Pharisee, cleanse first that [which is] within the cup and platter, that the outside of them may be clean also. 27 Woe unto you, , scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are like unto whited sepulchres, which indeed appear beautiful outward, but are within full of dead [men’s] bones, and of all uncleanness. 28 Even so ye also outwardly appear righteous unto men, but within ye are full of hypocrisy and iniquity."

- Isaiah 1: "21 How is the faithful city become an harlot! it was full of judgment; righteousness lodged in it; but now murderers. 22 Thy silver is become dross, thy wine mixed with water: 23 Thy princes [are] rebellious, and companions of thieves: every one loveth gifts, and followeth after rewards: they judge not the fatherless, neither doth the cause of the widow come unto them... 26 And I will restore thy judges as at the first, and thy counsellors as at the beginning: afterward thou shalt be called, The city of righteousness, the faithful city."
- Isaiah 32:1 "Behold, a king shall reign in righteousness, and princes shall rule in judgment."

- “6 Mine eyes shall be upon the faithful of the land, that they may dwell with me: he that walketh in a perfect way, he shall serve me. 7 He that worketh deceit shall not dwell within my house: he that telleth lies shall not tarry in my sight. 8 I will early destroy all the wicked of the land; that I may cut off all wicked doers from the city of the LORD.” Psalms 101:6-8

- Revelation 22:14 "Blessed [are] they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city."

- ↑ Cities of blood
- Exodus 16:3 "And the children of Israel said unto them, Would to God we had died by the hand of the LORD in the land of Egypt, when we sat by the flesh pots, [and] when we did eat bread to the full; for ye have brought us forth into this wilderness, to kill this whole assembly with hunger."
- Genesis 11:4 "And they said, Go to, let us build us a city and a tower, whose top [may reach] unto heaven; and let us make us a name, lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth."

- Isaiah 45:13 "I have raised him up in righteousness, and I will direct all his ways: he shall build my city, and he shall let go my captives, not for price nor reward, saith the LORD of hosts."
- Ezekiel 11:3 "Which say, [It is] not near; let us build houses: this [city is] the caldron, and we [be] the flesh."
- Ezekiel 7:23 "Make a chain: for the land is full of bloody crimes, and the city is full of violence."
- Ezekiel 9:9 "Then said he unto me, The iniquity of the house of Israel and Judah [is] exceeding great, and the land is full of blood, and the city full of perverseness: for they say, The LORD hath forsaken the earth, and the LORD seeth not."
- Ezekiel 11:11 "This [city] shall not be your caldron, neither shall ye be the flesh in the midst thereof; [but] I will judge you in the border of Israel:"
- Ezekiel 22:2 "Now, thou son of man, wilt thou judge, wilt thou judge the bloody city? yea, thou shalt shew her all her abominations. 3 Then say thou, Thus saith the Lord GOD, The city sheddeth blood in the midst of it, that her time may come, and maketh idols against herself to defile herself."
- Ezekiel 24:6... "Wherefore thus saith the Lord GOD; Woe to the bloody city, to the pot whose scum [is] therein, and whose scum is not gone out of it! bring it out piece by piece; let no lot fall upon it... 9 Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD; Woe to the bloody city! I will even make the pile for fire great."
- Hosea 6:8 "Gilead [is] a city of them that work iniquity, [and is] polluted with blood."
- Micah 3:9 "Hear this, I pray you, ye heads of the house of Jacob, and princes of the house of Israel, that abhor judgment, and pervert all equity. 10 They build up Zion with blood, and Jerusalem with iniquity. 11 The heads thereof judge for reward, and the priests thereof teach for hire, and the prophets thereof divine for money: yet will they lean upon the LORD, and say, [Is] not the LORD among us? none evil can come upon us. 12 Therefore shall Zion for your sake be plowed [as] a field, and Jerusalem shall become heaps, and the mountain of the house as the high places of the forest. -- Micah 4:1 But in the last days it shall come to pass, [that] the mountain of the house of the LORD shall be established in the top of the mountains, and it shall be exalted above the hills; and people shall flow unto it."
- Habakkuk 2:8 “Because thou hast spoiled many nations, all the remnant of the people shall spoil thee; because of men’s blood, and for the violence of the land, of the city, and of all that dwell therein... 12 Woe to him that buildeth a 'town with blood, and stablisheth a city by iniquity!”
- The frequent reference to cities of blood, flesh pots, and a civil cauldron (i.e. One purse) often is associated with a "harlot in the city" as we saw in Amos 7:17, but in Nahum 3:4 it says she "selleth nations through her whoredoms" that is Babylon. These are the systems of legal charity that provide a social welfare through governments that exercise authority one over the other entangling the masses in covetous practices which are traps and a snares and makes the word of God to none effect.
- ↑ Ritual Sacrifice is not Righteousness
- 1 Samuel 15:22 "And Samuel said, Hath the LORD(לַֽיהוָה֙) [as great] delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the LORD(יְהוָ֑ה)? Behold, to obey(שְׁמֹ֙עַ֙ šəmōa‘) [is] better than sacrifice, [and] to hearken(לְהַקְשִׁ֖יב ləhaqšîḇ) than the fat of rams."
- Proverbs 21:3 "To do justice and judgment [is] more acceptable to the LORD than sacrifice."
- Hosea 4:1 "Hear the word of the LORD, ye children of Israel: for the LORD hath a controversy with the inhabitants of the land, because [there is] no truth, nor mercy, nor knowledge of God in the land."
- Hosea 6:6 "For I desired mercy, and not sacrifice; and the knowledge of God more than burnt offerings. 7 But they like men have transgressed the covenant: there have they dealt treacherously against me. 8 Gilead [is] a city of them that work iniquity, [and is] polluted with blood. 9 And as troops of robbers wait for a man, [so] the company of priests murder in the way by consent: for they commit lewdness. 10 I have seen an horrible thing in the house of Israel: there [is] the whoredom of Ephraim, Israel is defiled. 11 Also, O Judah, he hath set an harvest for thee, when I returned the captivity of my people."
- Ecclesiastes 5:1 "Keep thy foot when thou goest to the house of God, and be more ready to hear, than to give the sacrifice of fools: for they consider not that they do evil."
- Isaiah 1:11 To what purpose [is] the multitude of your sacrifices unto me? saith the LORD: I am full of the burnt offerings of rams, and the fat of fed beasts; and I delight not in the blood of bullocks, or of lambs, or of he goats.
- Isaiah 58:6 [Is] not this the fast that I have chosen? to loose the bands of wickedness, to undo the heavy burdens, and to let the oppressed go free, and that ye break every yoke?
- Jeremiah 7:22 For I spake not unto your fathers, nor commanded them in the day that I brought them out of the land of Egypt, concerning burnt offerings or sacrifices:
- Daniel 4:27 Wherefore, O king, let my counsel be acceptable unto thee, and break off thy sins by righteousness, and thine iniquities by shewing mercy to the poor; if it may be a lengthening of thy tranquillity.
- Amos 5:21 "I hate, I despise your feast days, and I will not smell in your solemn assemblies." Balaam Nicolaitan
- Micah 6:6 "Wherewith shall I come before the LORD, [and] bow myself before the high God? shall I come before him with burnt offerings, with calves of a year old? 7 Will the LORD be pleased with thousands of rams, [or] with ten thousands of rivers of oil? shall I give my firstborn [for] my transgression, the fruit of my body [for] the sin of my soul? 8 He hath shewed thee, O man, what [is] good; and what doth the LORD require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God?"
- Matthew 5:7 Blessed [are] the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.
- Matthew 9:13 But go ye and learn what [that] meaneth, I will have mercy, and not sacrifice: for I am not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.
- Matthew 12:7 But if ye had known what [this] meaneth, I will have mercy, and not sacrifice, ye would not have condemned the guiltless.
