Comments
V1 "Verily, verily" as a "... formula is not used at the beginning of a fresh discourse, but is, in every case, the solemn introduction of some development of our Lord’s deeper teaching."[1]
The way of Christ is The Way of God and His righteousness from the beginning and there is no "other way".
V3 Salvation is an individual process. "the sheep ... know his voice.‭.. a stranger will they not follow... the voice of ..."‭
V6 Many would not know the righteous way of God because they had perverted the way of Abraham and Moses and all the prophets the sophistry, idolatry[2] of the doctrines of men.
V7 "Verily, verily" is repeated emphasizing that Jesus is the door[3] through which we must enter.
V8 Who are the "thieves and robbers"? They want to steal, and to kill, and to destroy, to take life.
No leaven in the free bread of the Corban of Christ who was the Good shepherd.
The good shepherd gives life and His sheep does not bite one another but desires to follow the way of life.
Matthew 7:14 "Because strait [is] the gate, and narrow [is] the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it."
V14 The good shepherd lays down his life while the one who is a hireling will not. He is seeking his own life and prosperity.
V16 "other sheep" "shall hear" "and there shall be one fold, and one shepherd."
V17 "love me, because I lay down my life,"[4]
V18 I lay it down of myself.[4] freewill offering of his life, a choice of charity in love.
V19-26 More division and separation because they believe not.
23 And Jesus walked in the temple in Solomon’s porch of Herod's Temple.[5] Solomon hewed the stones of the Altars of stones and was returning people to the way of Egypt in a corvee.
Mentioned in the audio for John 10 concerning corruption in modern government and the people Article 2 Section 22 and here is the on free assemblies of a Republic audio with a special guest from Oregon government at 1:33 mark in the audio talking about the common corruption.
V26-V30 Not of my sheep if they believe not, because My sheep hear and follow me will receive eternal life and no on can pluck them out of my Father’s hand Jesus is one with.
V31 & 33 Jews answered him, we stone for blasphemy; and being a man, makest thyself God. But the Caesar they will call a king[6] made himself an apotheos and the Son of God.
V39 They sought to kill him in the temples of governments as an insurrectionist.[7]
So, certain Jews in power crucified Jesus. Not all Jews.
Questions
What and how did those Jews think?
What were they doing with their Corban?
What were they doing with the law, with taxation?
What did their world have to do with covetous practices and legal charity and the dainties of rulers who exercise authority one over the other.
Were they hypocrites?
Were they thieves and robbers?
Or was the reference concerned only about men like Jesus Bar Abbas?
According to John 10:4 and 27 If people are following Jesus they would not be coveting the benefits or dainties offered by rulers who only give what they take from your neighbors.

If you are not doing what Jesus said or you are doing what He said not to do then you are not following Him and verses 28-29 do not apply.

V40 "went ... beyond Jordan ... abode" ...V41 where "all things that John spake of this man were true".
V42 "And many believed on him there."

I Am the Good Shepherd

1 ¶ Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that entereth not by the door into the sheepfold, but climbeth up some other way, the same is a thief and a robber.

2 But he that entereth in by the door is the shepherd of the sheep.

3 To him the porter openeth; and the sheep hear his voice: and he calleth his own sheep by name, and leadeth them out.

SHEEP HEAR

4 And when he putteth forth his own sheep, he goeth before them, and the sheep follow him: for they know his voice.

5 And a stranger will they not follow, but will flee from him: for they know not the voice of strangers.

6 This parable[8] spake Jesus unto them: but they understood not what things they were which he spake unto them.

The door

7 Then said Jesus unto them again, Verily, verily, I say unto you, I am the door[9][3] of the sheep.

8 All that ever came before me are thieves and robbers: but the sheep did not hear them.

9 I am the door:[3] by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture.

Thief cometh

10 The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.

11 I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep.

12 But he that is an hireling, and not the shepherd, whose own the sheep are not, seeth the wolf coming, and leaveth the sheep, and fleeth: and the wolf catcheth them, and scattereth the sheep.

13 The hireling fleeth, because he is an hireling, and careth not for the sheep.[10]

The good shepherd

14 I am the good shepherd, and know my sheep, and am known of mine.

15 As the Father knoweth me, even so know I the Father: and I lay down my life for the sheep.

16 And other sheep I have, which are not of this fold: them also I must bring, and they shall hear my voice; and there shall be one fold, and one shepherd.

Lays down his life

17 Therefore doth my Father love me, because I lay down my life,[4] that I might take it again.

18 No man taketh it from me, but I lay it down of myself.[4] I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. This commandment have I received of my Father.

Again division

19 ¶ There was a division therefore again among the Jews for these sayings.

20 And many of them said, He hath a devil, and is mad; why hear ye him?

21 Others said, These are not the words of him that hath a devil. Can a devil open the eyes of the blind?

I and the Father Are One

22 ¶ And it was at Jerusalem the feast of the dedication,[11] and it was winter.

23 And Jesus walked in the temple in Solomon’s porch.[5]

24 Then came the Jews round about him, and said unto him, How long dost thou make us to doubt? If thou be the Christ, tell us plainly.

25 Jesus answered them, I told you, and ye believed not: the works that I do in my Father’s name, they bear witness of me.

Not of my sheep

26 But ye believe not, because ye are not of my sheep, as I said unto you.

27 My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me:

28 And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.

29 My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father’s hand.

30 I and my Father are one.

Took up stones

31 Then the Jews took up stones again to stone him.

32 Jesus answered them, Many good works have I shewed you from my Father; for which of those works do ye stone me?

33 The Jews answered him, saying, For a good work we stone thee not; but for blasphemy; and because that thou, being a man, makest thyself God.

Ye are gods

34 Jesus answered them, Is it not written in your law, I said, Ye are gods?

35 If he called them gods, unto whom the word of God came, and the scripture cannot be broken;

36 Say ye of him, whom the Father hath sanctified, and sent into the world, Thou blasphemest; because I said, I am the Son of God?

Works of my Father

37 If I do not the works of my Father, believe me not.

38 But if I do, though ye believe not me, believe the works: that ye may know, and believe, that the Father is in me, and I in him.

Sought again

39 ¶ Therefore they sought again to take him: but he escaped out of their hand,

40 And went away again beyond Jordan into the place where John at first baptized; and there he abode.

41 And many resorted unto him, and said, John did no miracle: but all things that John spake of this man were true.

42 And many believed on him there.

  1. Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers.
  2. Covetousness is idolatry
Colossians 3:5 "Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry: 6 For which things’ sake the wrath of God cometh on the children of disobedience:"
Ephesians 5:5 "For this ye know, that no whoremonger, nor unclean person, nor covetous man, who is an idolater, hath any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God."
1 Corinthians 5:10 "Yet not altogether with the fornicators of this world, or with the covetous, or extortioners, or with idolaters; for then must ye needs go out of the world. 11 But now I have written unto you not to keep company, if any man that is called a brother be a fornicator, or covetous, or an idolater, or a railer, or a drunkard, or an extortioner; with such an one no not to eat."
  3. 3.0 3.1 3.2 The door and the way
Luke 13:25-27 “‭25 When once the master of the house is risen up, and hath shut to the door, and ye begin to stand without, and to knock at the door, saying, Lord, Lord, open unto us; and he shall answer and say unto you, I know you not whence ye are: ‭26 Then shall ye begin to say, We have eaten and drunk in thy presence, and thou hast taught in our streets. ‭27 But he shall say, I tell you, I know you not whence ye are; depart from me, all ye workers of iniquity.”
Revelation 3:19-20 “‭19 As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten: be zealous therefore, and repent. ‭20 Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.”
John 10:9 “‭9 I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture.”
James 5:8-12 “‭8 Be ye also patient; stablish your hearts: for the coming of the Lord draweth nigh. ‭9 Grudge not one against another, brethren, lest ye be condemned: behold, the judge standeth before the door. ‭10 Take, my brethren, the prophets, who have spoken in the name of the Lord, for an example of suffering affliction, and of patience. ‭11 Behold, we count them happy which endure. Ye have heard of the patience of Job, and have seen the end of the Lord; that the Lord is very pitiful, and of tender mercy. ‭12 But above all things, my brethren, swear not neither by heaven, neither by the earth, neither by any other oath: but let your yea be yea; and your nay, nay; lest ye fall into condemnation.st ye fall into condemnation.”
  4. 4.0 4.1 4.2 4.3 God of life and love
Job 1:21 And said, Naked came I out of my mother’s womb, and naked shall I return thither: the LORD gave, and the LORD hath taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD.
John 15:12 This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you. 13 Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.
1 John 3:16 Hereby perceive we the love of God, because he laid down his life for us: and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren. 17 But whoso hath this world's good, and seeth his brother have need, and shutteth up his bowels of compassion from him, how dwelleth the love of God in him? 18 My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth.
John 6:33-34“‭33 For the bread of God is he which cometh down from heaven, and giveth life unto the world. ‭34 Then said they unto him, Lord, evermore give us this bread.”
Mark 10:45 For even the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.
John 10:11 "I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep... 15 As the Father knoweth me, even so know I the Father: and I lay down my life for the sheep.... 17 Therefore doth my Father love me, because I lay down my life, that I might take it again."
John 13:37-38 “‭Peter said unto him, Lord, why cannot I follow thee now? I will lay down my life for thy sake. ‭38 Jesus answered him, Wilt thou lay down thy life for my sake? Verily, verily, I say unto thee, The cock shall not crow, till thou hast denied me thrice.”
John 15:13-14 “‭Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. ‭14 Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you.”
1 Corinthians 13:13 And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity.
Leviticus 19:18 Thou shalt not avenge, nor bear any grudge against the children of thy people, but thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself: I am the LORD.
"Therefore say I unto you, The kingdom of God shall be taken from you, and given to a nation bringing forth the fruits thereof." Matthew 21:43
Matthew 19:19 Honour thy father and thy mother: and, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
Matthew 22:39 And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. 40 On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.
Galatians 5:14 For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this; Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. 15 But if ye bite and devour one another, take heed that ye be not consumed one of another.
James 2:8 If ye fulfil the royal law according to the scripture, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself, ye do well: 9 But if ye have respect to persons, ye commit sin, and are convinced of the law as transgressors.
1 John 3:16-18 “Hereby perceive we the love of God, because he laid down his life for us: and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren. ‭17 But whoso hath this world’s good, and seeth his brother have need, and shutteth up his bowels of compassion from him, how dwelleth the love of God in him? ‭18 My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth.”
  5. 5.0 5.1 Josephus, the exact dimensions of Herod's Temple formed a perfect square - a furlong by a furlong on all four sides. On the east wall was a double cloister, porch, which in later times is referred to as Solomon's porch.
The historic writings of Josephus give an eyewitness account to the First and Second Temples.
“This hill was walled all round, and in compass four furlongs, [the distance of] each angle containing in length a furlong: but within this wall, and on the very top of all, there ran another wall of stone also, having, on the east quarter, a double cloister, of the same length with the wall; in the midst of which was the temple itself. This cloister looked to the gates of the temple; and it had been adorned by many kings in former times; and round about the entire temple were fixed the spoils taken from barbarous nations; all these had been dedicated to the temple by Herod, with the addition of those he had taken from the Arabians.” (Antiquities of the Jews, Book 15, Ch. 11.3)
  6. “‭15 But they cried out, Away with him, away with him, crucify him. Pilate saith unto them, Shall I crucify your King? The chief priests answered, We have no king but Caesar.” John 19:15
  7. “‭2 And when they had bound him, they led him away, and delivered him to Pontius Pilate the governor.” Matthew 27:2
John 18:28-19:12 “‭28 Then led they Jesus from Caiaphas unto the hall of judgment: and it was early; and they themselves went not into the judgment hall, lest they should be defiled; but that they might eat the passover. ‭29 Pilate then went out unto them, and said, What accusation bring ye against this man? ‭30 They answered and said unto him, If he were not a malefactor, we would not have delivered him up unto thee. ‭31 Then said Pilate unto them, Take ye him, and judge him according to your law. The Jews therefore said unto him, It is not lawful for us to put any man to death: ‭32 That the saying of Jesus might be fulfilled, which he spake, signifying what death he should die. ‭33 Then Pilate entered into the judgment hall again, and called Jesus, and said unto him, Art thou the King of the Jews? ‭34 Jesus answered him, Sayest thou this thing of thyself, or did others tell it thee of me? ‭35 Pilate answered, Am I a Jew? Thine own nation and the chief priests have delivered thee unto me: what hast thou done? ‭36 Jesus answered, My kingdom is not of this world: if my kingdom were of this world, then would my servants fight, that I should not be delivered to the Jews: but now is my kingdom not from hence. ‭37 Pilate therefore said unto him, Art thou a king then? Jesus answered, Thou sayest that I am a king. To this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth. Every one that is of the truth heareth my voice. ‭38 Pilate saith unto him, What is truth? And when he had said this, he went out again unto the Jews, and saith unto them, I find in him no fault at all. ‭39 But ye have a custom, that I should release unto you one at the passover: will ye therefore that I release unto you the King of the Jews? ‭40 Then cried they all again, saying, Not this man, but Barabbas. Now Barabbas was a robber."
John 18: ‭"1 Then Pilate therefore took Jesus, and scourged him. ‭2 ... ‭4 Pilate therefore went forth again, and saith unto them, Behold, I bring him forth to you, that ye may know that I find no fault in him. ‭5 Then came Jesus forth, wearing the crown of thorns, and the purple robe. And Pilate saith unto them, Behold the man! ‭6 When the chief priests therefore and officers saw him, they cried out, saying, Crucify him, crucify him. Pilate saith unto them, Take ye him, and crucify him: for I find no fault in him. ‭7 The Jews answered him, We have a law, and by our law he ought to die, because he made himself the Son of God. ‭8 When Pilate therefore heard that saying, he was the more afraid; ‭9 And went again into the judgment hall, and saith unto Jesus, Whence art thou? But Jesus gave him no answer. ‭10 Then saith Pilate unto him, Speakest thou not unto me? knowest thou not that I have power to crucify thee, and have power to release thee? ‭11 Jesus answered, Thou couldest have no power at all against me, except it were given thee from above: therefore he that delivered me unto thee hath the greater sin. ‭12 And from thenceforth Pilate sought to release him: but the Jews cried out, saying, If thou let this man go, thou art not Caesar’s friend: whosoever maketh himself a king speaketh against Caesar.”
