Genesis 15
![]() What was he doing and why was he able to defeat whole armies that had just conquered these city State governments when he was neither a king nor ruler? What was Abraham really doing? Did he form a free "Polis" through a network of Altars of freewill sacrifice that strengthen the bands of a free society by nurturing the social bonds through the voluntary practice of pure Religion? |

The term vision is seen in the scripture as bammaḥăzeh בַּֽמַּחֲזֶ֖ה or BeitMemChetZayinHey which only appears in this verse. The root word being translated vision also is MemChetZayinHey[1] and is from ChetZayinHey[2] which has been translated see, behold, and even prophesy.
|
This vision of Abram is associated with the wisdom and inludes the instruction to Fear not. |
What is that fear and what produces or encourages it? Will this vision show Abraham the way of righteousness as opposed to the way of the wicked?[3] |
V1 The Way is revealed by the word[4] of the LORD which is the word of God. Those who follow the way of Abraham who lives by faith will also be doers. Abraham was a doer of the word through faith and revelation. |
V1 Fear not the I am will be "thy shield[5] , and thy exceeding great reward(שְׂכָרְךָ֖ śəḵārəḵā ShinKafReishKaf)[6]." |
V2 Who or what is the steward(מֶ֣שֶׁק MemShinKuf heir, possession)
[7] of my house (בֵּיתִ֔י) is this Eliezer(AlefLamedYod אֱלִיעֶזֶר) of Dammesequs[8]? |
V2 Abram was childless. If the kingdom is from generations to generation then being childless is the end of you inheritance. And his servant were a part of his house. |
V4-5 He is promised a prosperous seed. Again, The word[4] of the LORD is also the word of God. |
V6 Who or what is righteous. While Noah was righteous in his generation Abram "believed in the LORD" which seems to have been guiding Abram from Ur and Haran and how he built altars instead of how Sodom did it. |
V7 this land is not just a particular parcel on the earth but the earth itself (hā’āretṣ הָאָ֥רֶץ HeyAlefReishTzadik). Hā’āretṣ הָאָ֥רֶץ is often translated earth[11] to inherit it. "The Hebrew word "erets" is a versatile term used extensively throughout the Old Testament. It primarily denotes the physical earth or land, encompassing everything from the entire planet to specific regions or territories."
|
V8 Abram was concerned about his heirs. While he would have heirs the true heirs are those who have faith and walk by that faith. |
V9 The word for "heifer" in Genesis 15:9 is ‘eglah (עֶגְלָה) [AyinGimelLamedHey].[12] The Hebrew word we see in Numbers 19:2 where the sacrifice of the Red heifer is mentioned is parah(פָרָה)[13] which is identical to the Hebrew word numbered 06509 parah (פָרָה)[14] which as a verb would mean to bear fruit or to make fruitful.

God's Word with Abram
1 After these things the word[4] of the LORD came unto Abram in a vision[1], saying, Fear not, Abram: I am thy shield[5], and thy exceeding great reward[6].
2 And Abram said, Lord GOD, what wilt thou give me, seeing I go childless, and the steward of my house is this Eliezer of Damascus?
3 And Abram said, Behold, to me thou hast given no seed: and, lo, one born in my house is mine heir.
4 And, behold, the word of the LORD came unto him, saying, This shall not be thine heir; but he that shall come forth out of thine own bowels shall be thine heir.
5 And he brought him forth abroad, and said, Look now toward heaven, and tell the stars, if thou be able to number them: and he said unto him, So shall thy seed be.
He believed
6 And he believed in the LORD; and he counted it to him for righteousness.
7 And he said unto him, I am the LORD that brought thee out of Ur of the Chaldees, to give thee this land[11] to inherit it.
8 And he said, Lord GOD, whereby shall I know that I shall inherit it?
Instructions of the Lord
9 And he said unto him, Take me an heifer of three years old, and a she goat of three years old, and a ram of three years old, and a turtledove <08449 תּוֹר towr>[16], and a young pigeon (גּוֹזל gowzal)[17].
10 And he took unto him all these, and divided (בָּתַר) them in the midst, and laid each piece one against another: but the birds divided he not.
Vultures came
11 And when the fowls (הָעַ֖יִט) came down upon the carcases, Abram drove them away.
Great darkness
12 And when the sun was going down, a deep sleep fell upon Abram; and, lo, an horror of great darkness fell upon him.
The bondage to come
13 And he said unto Abram, Know of a surety that thy seed shall be a stranger in a land that is not theirs, and shall serve them; and they shall afflict them four hundred years;
14 And also that nation, whom they shall serve, will I judge: and afterward shall they come out with great substance.
15 And thou shalt go to thy fathers in peace; thou shalt be buried in a good old age.
The iniquity of the Amorites
16 But in the fourth generation they shall come hither again: for the iniquity of the Amorites is not yet full.
A light between
17 And it came to pass, that, when the sun went down, and it was dark, behold a smoking furnace, and a burning lamp that passed between those pieces.
Bondage and fruit
18 In the same day the LORD made a covenant with Abram, saying, Unto thy seed have I given this land[11] , from the river of Egypt unto the great river, the river Euphrates:
19 The Kenites,[18] and the Kenizzites,[19] and the Kadmonites,[20]
20 And the Hittites,[21] and the Perizzites,[22] and the Rephaims,[23]
21 And the Amorites,[24] and the Canaanites,[25] and the Girgashites, and the Jebusites.[26]
