Destruction
Self destruction
Why would people choose to pursue behaviors that are self-destructive or self sabotaging as individuals and as societies?
Behavior is said to be Self-sabotaging when it creates problems in daily life and interferes with long-standing goals. Besides the obvious forms of self-destruction like eating disorders, alcohol use disorder, substance use disorders, sex addiction, self-injury, body-focused repetitive behavior and suicide attempts or even forms of self-injury such as cutting. Common self-sabotaging behaviors can also include procrastination about inevitable consequences, denial of historical or even present known truths about what will inevitably happen, or what is known bar success and lead to ultimate failure. Engineers can predict with precise certainty that things will break down through use. The same is true with the acceptance of certain cultural behaviors, practices, and policies.
Patterns of history
The study of the historical past tells us that that “The real destroyers of the liberties of the people is he who spreads among them bounties, donations, and benefits.” Plutarch
Plutarch would write in his Life of Coriolanus (c. 100 AD.)"That the man who first ruined the Roman people twas he who first gave them treats and gratuities. But this mischief crept secretly and gradually in, and did not openly make it's appearance in Rome for a considerable time."[2]
He was not alone in that understanding for Juvenal wrote, "… Already long ago, from when we sold our vote to no man, the People have abdicated our duties; for the People who once upon a time handed out military command, high civil office, legions — everything, now restrains itself and anxiously hopes for just two things: bread and circuses."[3]"..that the common people—rather than caring about their freedom—are only interested in “bread and circuses” (i.e. food and entertainment)".[4]
Julius Caesar knew the people would abdicate more willingly when he provided free bread as long is it was at the expense of others. Socialism only works on the smallest and most intimate of scales and when there is some place to go when things break down and the selfish nature of people becomes the driving force.
Nature requires struggle for growth and that struggle only comes when there is inequality. The same is true of the noble characters of mankind like the choice of self sacrifice and mercy. They must be perpetually practiced.
Rome should have known that their choices to depend on legal charity through men who exercise authority when they chose to institute systems dependent upon force and violence because Polybius warned them of the inevitable outcome. All of history warned them that these policies would degenerate the masses. But if they did understand they may have chosen to turn a blind eye[5] to it for they desired power more than righteousness.
"The masses continue with an appetite for benefits and the habit of receiving them by way of a rule of force and violence. The people, having grown accustomed to feed at the expense of others and to depend for their livelihood on the property of others... institute the rule of violence; [6] and now uniting their forces massacre, banish, and plunder,[7] until they degenerate again into perfect savages and find once more a master and monarch." [8] [9]
- Polybius saw the downfall of the republic by way of their free bread and welfare a 150 years before the first Emperor of Rome and 175 years before the birth of John the Baptist and Jesus the Christ who opposed these same systems of free bread at your neighbor's expense.
- The authoritarian State often uses force and violence to become the Benefactors of the people if the covet what is their neighbors'. They make a social contract where one class of citizen is forced to provide for another class through "legal charity" which is not true charity. The writings of the Apostles warned along with countless passages of ancient writings of the prophets including Proverbs 23 which warned them about what Christ forbid which was the covetous practices of socialist forms of government.
Loathing
Intense feelings of self-loathing or self-hatred can produce a proclivity to self-harm. This may involve a conscious and willful intent to injure oneself, or a more subconscious process or psychosis.
Self-loathing is a feeling that resembles self-hate and as a consequence, people might feel like they do not deserve love and actually have feelings of guilt when people are kind to them. They lack trust in others and seek to prove that people do not love. They prefer being victims and choose to judge others. Hatred of self may often lead to hatred of others and a desire to fail.
A well known way to avoid or reverse destructive behaviours in your relationship is to become self-aware and recognize why you might engage in them yourself. According to Dr. Randi Gunther, to break out of self-destructive patterns, “you must be willing to look at them without defensiveness or negative self-judgment.”
Those claiming to believe the Bible, or Christ should have known "He that is greedy of gain troubleth his own house; but he that hateth gifts shall live." Proverbs 15:27
- "And he said unto them, Take heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man's life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth." Luke 12:15
National destruction
Why would a whole society or nation choose a path of self-destruction?
Biblical destruction
“30 And Jacob said to Simeon and Levi, Ye have troubled me to make me to stink among the inhabitants of the land, among the Canaanites and the Perizzites: and I being few in number, they shall gather themselves together against me, and slay[10] me; and I shall be destroyed[11]“, I and my house.” Genesis 34:30, AV
Jacob was worried about the destruction of himself and his family through acts of revenge were his generations would be exterminated(shamad).[11]
Deuteronomy 7:23 "But the LORD thy God shall deliver them unto thee, and shall destroy them with a mighty destruction (מְהוּמָ֣ה mëhuwmah)[12] , until they be destroyed (hiššāməḏām הִשָּׁמְדָֽם׃ shamad)[11]. 24 [They shall be] burnt with hunger, and devoured with burning heat, and with bitter destruction(hišmiḏḵā הִשְׁמִֽדְךָ֖ shamad)[11]: I will also send the teeth of beasts upon them, with the poison of serpents of the dust."
“20 The LORD shall send upon thee cursing, vexation (מְהוּמָה mëhuwmah)[12], and rebuke, in all that thou settest thine hand unto for to do, until thou be destroyed(hiššāmeḏḵā הִשָּֽׁמֶדְךָ֤׃ shamad)[11], and until thou perish quickly; because of the wickedness of thy doings, whereby thou hast forsaken me.” Deuteronomy 28:20
“9 And it was so, that, after they had carried it about, the hand of the LORD was against the city with a very great destruction(מְהוּמָה mëhuwmah)[12]: and he smote the men of the city, both small and great, and they had emerods in their secret parts.” 1 Samuel 5:9,
Deuteronomy 32:24 [They shall be] burnt with hunger, and devoured with burning heat, and with bitter destruction: I will also send the teeth of beasts upon them, with the poison of serpents of the dust.
1 Samuel 5:9 And it was [so], that, after they had carried it about, the hand of the LORD was against the city with a very great destruction (מְהוּמָה mëhuwmah)[12]: and he smote the men of the city, both small and great, and they had emerods in their secret parts.
1 Samuel 5:11 So they sent and gathered together all the lords of the Philistines, and said, Send away the ark of the God of Israel, and let it go again to his own place, that it slay us not, and our people: for there was a deadly destruction[12] throughout all the city; the hand of God was very heavy there.
“20 And Saul and all the people that were with him assembled themselves, and they came to the battle: and, behold, every man’s sword was against his fellow, and there was a very great discomfiture.[12]” 1 Samuel 14:20
“5 And in those times there was no peace to him that went out, nor to him that came in, but great vexations[12] were upon all the inhabitants of the countries.” 2 Chronicles 15:5
“16 Better is little with the fear of the LORD than great treasure and trouble[12] therewith.” Proverbs 15:16
“5 For it is a day of trouble[12], and of treading down, and of perplexity by the Lord GOD of hosts in the valley of vision, breaking down the walls, and of crying to the mountains.” Isaiah 22:5
“7 The morning is come unto thee, O thou that dwellest in the land: the time is come, the day of trouble[12] is near, and not the sounding again of the mountains.” Ezekiel 7:7
“5 Those that be near, and those that be far from thee, shall mock thee, which art infamous and much vexed.[12]” Ezekiel 22:5
“9 Publish in the palaces at Ashdod, and in the palaces in the land of Egypt, and say, Assemble yourselves upon the mountains of Samaria, and behold the great tumults[12] in the midst thereof, and the oppressed in the midst thereof.” Amos 3:9
“13 And it shall come to pass in that day, that a great tumult[12] from the LORD shall be among them; and they shall lay hold every one on the hand of his neighbour, and his hand shall rise up against the hand of his neighbour.” Zechariah 14:13
1 Kings 20:42 And he said unto him, Thus saith the LORD, Because thou hast let go out of [thy] hand a man whom I appointed to utter destruction, therefore thy life shall go for his life, and thy people for his people.
2 Chronicles 22:4 Wherefore he did evil in the sight of the LORD like the house of Ahab: for they were his counsellors after the death of his father to his destruction.
2 Chronicles 22:7 And the destruction of Ahaziah was of God by coming to Joram: for when he was come, he went out with Jehoram against Jehu the son of Nimshi, whom the LORD had anointed to cut off the house of Ahab.
2 Chronicles 26:16 But when he was strong, his heart was lifted up to [his] destruction: for he transgressed against the LORD his God, and went into the temple of the LORD to burn incense upon the altar of incense.
Esther 8:6 For how can I endure to see the evil that shall come unto my people? or how can I endure to see the destruction of my kindred?
Esther 9:5 Thus the Jews smote all their enemies with the stroke of the sword, and slaughter, and destruction, and did what they would unto those that hated them.
Proverbs 10:29 The way of the LORD is strength to the upright: but destruction shall be to the workers of iniquity.
Proverbs 16:18 Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall.
Hosea 7:13 Woe unto them! for they have fled from me: destruction unto them! because they have transgressed against me: though I have redeemed them, yet they have spoken lies against me. 14 And they have not cried unto me with their heart, when they howled upon their beds: they assemble themselves for corn and wine, and they rebel against me.
Micah 2:9 The women of my people have ye cast out from their pleasant houses; from their children have ye taken away my glory for ever. 10 Arise ye, and depart; for this is not your rest: because it is polluted, it shall destroy[13] you, even with a sore destruction. 11 If a man walking in the spirit and falsehood do lie, saying, I will prophesy unto thee of wine and of strong drink; he shall even be the prophet of this people.
The word for destroy in verse 10 of Micah 2 is not from shamad ShinMemDalet[11] nor Abad AlefBeitDelat[14] nor charam ChetReishMem.[15] which are the most common Hebrew words translated destroy. There are many words translated destroy such as machah[16], shachath[17], caphah[18], mashchiyth [19], karath [20], shabar[21], quwr [22], huwm[23], chabal[24], but is from a different chabal[13].
Matthew 7:13 Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: 14 Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it. 15 Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves. 16 Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles? 17 Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit. 18 A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit.
Romans 3:12 They are all gone out of the way, they are together become unprofitable; there is none that doeth good, no, not one. 13 Their throat is an open sepulchre; with their tongues they have used deceit; the poison of asps is under their lips: 14 Whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness: 15 Their feet are swift to shed blood: 16 Destruction and misery are in their ways: 17 And the way of peace have they not known: 18 There is no fear of God before their eyes. 19 Now we know that what things soever the law saith, it saith to them who are under the law: that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God. 20 Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin.
Philippians 3:17 Brethren, be followers together of me, and mark them which walk so as ye have us for an ensample. 18 (For many walk, of whom I have told you often, and now tell you even weeping, that they are the enemies of the cross of Christ: 19 Whose end is destruction, whose god is their belly, and whose glory is in their shame, who mind earthly things.) 20 For our conversation is in heaven; from whence also we look for the Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ:
1 Thessalonians 5:3 For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape.
2 Peter 2:1 But there were false prophets[25] also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you, who privily shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them, and bring upon themselves swift destruction. 2 And many shall follow their pernicious ways; by reason of whom the way of truth shall be evil spoken of. 3 And through covetousness shall they with feigned words make merchandise of you: whose judgment now of a long time lingereth not, and their damnation slumbereth not. 4 For if God spared not the angels that sinned, but cast them down to hell, and delivered them into chains of darkness, to be reserved unto judgment; 5 And spared not the old world, but saved Noah the eighth person, a preacher of righteousness, bringing in the flood upon the world of the ungodly; 6 And turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrha into ashes condemned them with an overthrow, making them an example unto those that after should live ungodly; 7 And delivered just Lot, vexed with the filthy conversation of the wicked: 8 (For that righteous man dwelling among them, in seeing and hearing, vexed his righteous soul from day to day with their unlawful deeds;) 9 The Lord knoweth how to deliver the godly out of temptations, and to reserve the unjust unto the day of judgment to be punished: 10 But chiefly them that walk after the flesh in the lust of uncleanness, and despise government. Presumptuous are they, selfwilled, they are not afraid to speak evil of dignities.
2 Peter 3:15 And account that the longsuffering of our Lord is salvation; even as our beloved brother Paul also according to the wisdom given unto him hath written unto you; 16 As also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things; in which are some things hard to be understood, which they that are unlearned and unstable wrest, as they do also the other scriptures, unto their own destruction. 17 Ye therefore, beloved, seeing ye know these things before, beware lest ye also, being led away with the error of the wicked, fall from your own stedfastness.
1 Timothy 6:9 But they that will be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts, which drown men in destruction and perdition. 10 For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows. 11 But thou, O man of God, flee these things; and follow after righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, meekness. 12 Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, whereunto thou art also called, and hast professed a good profession before many witnesses. 13 I give thee charge in the sight of God, who quickeneth all things, and before Christ Jesus, who before Pontius Pilate witnessed a good confession; 14 That thou keep this commandment without spot, unrebukeable, until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ:
The extinction of righteousness
In psychology, extinction refers to the gradual weakening of a conditioned response that results in the behavior, good or bad, decreasing or disappearing to the point of destruction.
Extinction is the decrease in strength of a learned or required primal behavior when the behavior is no longer reinforced and the proclivity to it is diminished creating an imbalance that undermines fundamental functions required for continuation.
Operant Extinction refers to the gradual decrease in the response rate of an elemental and fundamental behavior learned via reinforcement. This can be the result of conformity to an alternative form of behavior with a different reinforcement.
Conformity is the process whereby people change their beliefs, attitudes, actions, or perceptions, ergo practices, to more closely match those held by groups or individuals to which they belong or want to have a relation with or whose approval they desire.
There are numerous types of conformity with in human society which may include compliance, identification, and internalization.
- Compliance: the tendency of conforming with or agreeing to the wishes of others.
- Identification: A feeling of support, sympathy, understanding, or belonging towards somebody or something.
- Internalization: Unconscious mental process where characteristics, beliefs, feelings and attitudes of other people are assimilated into your own self.
The need for approval is the need to garner that sense of physical and emotional security through an acceptable feedback satisfying the need for an agora instinct which integrates the mind of one with the mind of the group in a collective consciousness.
Do you know what you believe?
What are your essential and fundamental values?
Do you know who you are without external justification?
Personalities at war
There are said to be 5 Big Personality Traits that are often seemingly at war with each other when the war is really internal within each trait.
- Conscientiousness – impulsive, disorganized vs. disciplined, careful
- Agreeableness – suspicious, uncooperative vs. trusting, helpful
- Neuroticism – calm, confident vs. anxious, pessimistic
- Openness to Experience – prefers routine, practical vs. imaginative, spontaneous
- Extraversion – reserved, thoughtful vs. sociable, fun-loving
The only real conflict is found in the paradox that we may see between light and darkness, cold and heat, or good and evil. The existing positive attributes are represented by those basic personality traits with their only real opposition being found, not in an opposing force or power but in the denial of their absence.
Existential threat
Existential threat or crises refers to anything that threatens the existence of something or someone or their soul, their "right to think" from free travel to free speech. It is often used in a philosophical context related to existentialism, "a philosophy centered on the individual, personal choice, and the meaning of life as self-determined."
The right of self-determination is even mentioned in the United Nation's Charter in Art 1 (2).[26]
Without the individuals accepted right to self determination there is will be an existential threat to all liberty.
The greatest existential threat to your life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness comes from when you put you right to life, liberty and pursuit of happiness before the rights of your neighbor. This is often done through personal, political, and public policies that could be said to be covetous practices.
Justification
When justification of behavior is desired, relationships may require conformity. That vain need for justification simply prompts people to conform to what ever behavior is in need of justification. When the need to justify the absence of a positive personality trait arises mutually within a society the MOB[27] is born.
Passive justification of bad behavior in others leads the individual toward conformity to personal bad behavior which creates cognitive dissonance that will require some form of self justification, often at the expense of the truth.
Self-justification describes how, when a person encounters cognitive dissonance, or a situation in which a person's behavior is inconsistent with their beliefs (a.k.a. hypocrisy), that person tends to justify the behavior and deny any negative feedback associated with the behavior.
When the denial inters in to practices and behavior that censors or even oppresses another the perpetrators will be drawn into a mind set of self destruction by proxy.[28] Denial that filters the view of the feedback from reality is denial of the truth which is self blinding behavior.[5]
Denial of the truth is denial of the light of consciousness which will lead to a dark place [29] tempting men to exercise authority over other men with the power they are given.[30]
Targeting
Maladaptive behaviors inhibit your ability to adjust healthily to particular situations. In essence, they prevent you from adapting or coping well with the demands and stresses of life.
Maladaptive behaviors are dysfunctional and non-productive behaviours.
Adaptive behavior is behavior that enables a person to cope in their environment with greatest success and least conflict with others or themselves.
Adaptive behavior may relate to everyday skills or tasks, addictions, destructive or negative behavior, but also to the most fundamental virtuous social bonds of society.
A maladaptive behavior is a type of behavior that is often used to reduce one's anxiety, but the result is dysfunctional and non-productive, even counter productive or harmful.
The behaviors have a self-destructive nature to them. Because there is a singularity element to society all appearances of self-destruction will encompass destruction of others even to the point of extinction.
Maladaptive and adaptive behaviors of individuals who compose society are outlined in the Ten Commandments.
The more society abandons or denies those behavior outline the closer they move toward social extinction.
"Extinction bursts" refer to the expected and temporary escalations in the frequency, duration, and/or intensity of the maladaptive “target” behavior (i.e., tantrums).

- ↑ An alternate translation in context, "9. For no sooner had the knowledge of the jealousy and hatred existing in the citizens against them which is replaced by democracy, emboldened some one to oppose the government by word or deed, than he was sure to find the whole people ready and prepared to take his side. Having then got rid of these rulers by assassination or exile, they do not venture to set up a king again, being still in terror of the injustice to which this led before; nor dare they intrust the common interests again to more than one, considering the recent example of their misconduct: and therefore, as the only sound hope left them is that which depends upon themselves, they are driven to take refuge in that; and so changed the constitution from an oligarchy to a democracy, and took upon themselves the superintendence and charge of the state. And as long as any survive who have had experience of oligarchical supremacy and domination, they regard their present constitution as a blessing, and hold equality and freedom as of the utmost value. But as soon as a new generation has arisen, and the democracy has descended to their children’s children, long association weakens their value for equality and freedom, and some seek to become more powerful than the ordinary citizens; and the most liable to this temptation are the rich. (which degenerates into rule of corruption and violence, only to be stopped by a return to despotism.) So when they begin to be fond of office, and find themselves unable to obtain it by their own unassisted efforts and their own merits, they ruin their estates, while enticing and corrupting the common people in every possible way. By which means when, in their senseless mania for reputation, they have made the populace ready and greedy to receive bribes, the virtue of democracy is destroyed, and it is transformed into a government of violence and the strong hand. For the mob, habituated to feed at the expense of others, and to have its hopes of a livelihood in the property of its neighbours, as soon as it has got a leader sufficiently ambitious and daring, being excluded by poverty from the sweets of civil honours, produces a reign of mere violence. Then come tumultuous assemblies, massacres, banishments, redivisions of land; until, after losing all trace of civilisation, it has once more found a master and a despot."
