V2 scribes and the Pharisees sit in Moses' seat: Why was that important? Who was king? In Exodus 18:13 Moses sat iL jugsmennt of the people but turned much of that over to the people and the cities of refuge which was their appeals court and eventually the Sanhedrin. |
What is the significance of that claim? The kingdom of God was designed with no king nor ruler and given a way to live together to remain free souls under God. |
The Pharisees as blind guides[3] had perverted the Torah so that what they said the scriptures were telling the people to do would make the word of God to none effect. What did they have wrong? |
V4 "bind[4] heavy burdens[5] and grievous to be borne[6] , and lay[7] them on men's shoulders" This was done in part by the sophistry of their false interpretation of the scriptures. It was also due to their Corban which was a covetous practice establish through the consent and exercising authority of Herod which was making the people human resources as One Purse and a city of blood because the people had an appetite for and took delight in the dainties of these rulers which are the wages of unrighteousness. |
V5 ...to be seen of men: they make broad their phylacteries which are pieces of parchment containing sentences of the law put in a leather pouch strapped to the forehead with the leather thong wrapped around the arm to the hand. This was a symbolic ritual describing a form of meditation that had been unmoored from its meaning. See also enlarging the borders of their garments or the need for breeches, or removing leaven. |
7 Rabbi meaning teacher is more often translated master. |
V8 for one is your Master kathegetes[8] This wisdom is part of the teaching to not exercise authority one over the other[9], be not a respecter of persons[10], and he is to be greater is to be a servant[11] which is repeated in verse 11. |
V9 call no man your father upon the earth[12]: for one is your Father, which is in heaven. This is part of His teaching on the head of the Church, which the keys to are through revelation and not a flesh and blood. Every church should serve God by serving the people, not tickling the ears while delivering the people back into bondage. Yet, the His Holy Church is composed of flesh and blood souls led by the Holy Spirit, in the world but not of it, who like the Levites who as joint heirs and belong to God. |
V10, 11, 12 Verse 9 sits between the repeated statement "for one is your Master kathegetes[8] All express the [13] is translated "ought" and is found in verses 16 and 18 but translated debtor and guilty. |
First four woes 1. V13 shut up the kingdom by a false key. 2. V14 devour widows' homes because of inheritance taxes and property taxes. The same was true at the time of Christ. 3. V15 by consent a proselyte[14], and when he is made a foreigner to the kingdom by covetous practices which is idolatry and biting onr another 4. V16...22 blind guides when it comes to swearing by the reserve fund of the temple with their offerings and gifts[15] of Corban |
They were blind guides for they led the people away from the righteousness of God's Way which are freewill offerings to set the tables of welfare established by Moses for God and His people or what the New Testament calls charity. The table of the Pharisees was a snare. Jerusalem had become one of the cities of blood where the civil government called itself benefactors but exercise authority[9] one over the other. |
They applied to the civil government to obtain the dainties of their rulers and took oaths and made pledges creating the bands of authority that brought them back entangled in the yoke of bondage. |
Four more woes 5. 23V They omitted the weightier matters[16] of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith: because their corban was not by charity but by force, like the foolishness of King SaulV23 The English word “duty”[17] only appears a few times in the New Testament but the same Greek word is also translated “ought” which appears many times. And as I said “ought" is simply the auxiliary verb "used to express duty or moral obligation. |
Another word "opheilo" is translated "ought" and is found in verses 16 and 18 but translated debtor and guilty. |
6. V25 Psalms 109:11 The extortioner is a lenderlender[18] in Psalms 109 and catches or ensnares[19] all that the wicked have and the strangers spoil his labour. 7. V26 they appear righteous unto men, but are dead and full of hypocrisy[20] and iniquity[21] 8. V27 - 33 Ye are the children of them which killed the prophets...Ye serpents, ye generation of vipers, how can ye escape the damnation of hell? |
35v John the Baptist was the son of someone who was literally one of the acting High priests of Judea, one Zacharias[22] Origen suggested that the Zechariah mentioned in Matthew 23:35 may be the father of John the Baptist. Zechariah was killed by those under Herod's order because he did not reveal the location of John and Elizabeth to them, according to the Gospel of James, but the text does not support the idea that it was the soldiers who killed him. Still others contradict even this report. |
It was certainly a time of corruption where they feared even Jesus going to Jerusalem and we also see this in the Gospel of James and in the history of the Sanhedrin. |
Questions |
Do you have the Corban of the Pharisees or the Corban of Christ? |
Do you love one another through fervent charity or Bite one another with the teeth of your Benefactor who exercise authority[9] according to the covetous practices[23] which is idolatry?[24] |
Are you back in the bondage of Egypt because your appetite for the dainties at the tables of rulers which should have been for your welfare but was a snare?[25] |
Do you want to repent and seek the [[kingdom of
God]] and His righteousness or place your hope in the wages of unrighteousness? |

Eight Woes to the Scribes and Pharisees
[1] Then spake Jesus to the multitude, and to his disciples,
[2] Saying, The scribes and the Pharisees sit in Moses' seat:
[3] All therefore whatsoever they bid[26][27] you observe, that observe[28] and do; but do not ye after their works[29]:[30] for they say, and do not.
They bind burdens
[4] For they bind[4] heavy burdens[5] and grievous to be borne[6] , and lay[7] them on men's shoulders; but they themselves will not move them with one of their fingers.[31]
[5] But all their works they do for to be seen of men: they make broad their phylacteries[32], and enlarge the borders of their garments,
[6] And love the uppermost rooms at feasts, and the chief seats[33] in the synagogues,
[7] And greetings in the markets, and to be called of men, Rabbi, Rabbi.[34]
[8] But be not ye called Rabbi[34]: for one is your Master[8], even Christ; and all ye are brethren.
Call No man father
[9] And call no man your father[35] upon the earth[12]: for one is your Father[35], which is in heaven.
[10] Neither be ye called masters[8]: for one is your Master[8], even Christ.
[11] But he that is greatest among you shall be your servant.[36][11]
[12] And whosoever shall exalt[37] himself shall be abased; and he that shall humble himself shall be exalted.[36][11]
First four woes
[13] But woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites[38][39]! for ye shut up the kingdom of heaven[40] against men: for ye neither go in yourselves, neither suffer ye them that are entering to go in. [41]
[14] Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites[38][39]! for ye devour widows' houses, and for a pretence make long prayer: therefore ye shall receive the greater damnation.[41]
[15] Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites[38][39]! for ye compass sea and land to make one proselyte[14], and when he is made, ye make him twofold more the child of hell than yourselves. [41]
[16] Woe unto you, ye blind guides,[3][41] which say, Whosoever shall swear by the temple, it is nothing; but whosoever shall swear by the gold of the temple, he is a debtor! [13]
Blind fools
[17] Ye fools and blind: for whether is greater, the gold, or the temple that sanctifieth the gold?
[18] And, Whosoever shall swear by the altar, it is nothing; but whosoever sweareth by the gift that is upon it, he is guilty.[13]
[19] Ye fools and blind: for whether is greater, the gift, or the altar that sanctifieth the gift?
[20] Whoso therefore shall swear by the altar, sweareth by it, and by all things thereon.
[21] And whoso shall swear by the temple, sweareth by it, and by him that dwelleth therein.
[22] And he that shall swear by heaven, sweareth by the throne of God, and by him that sitteth thereon.
Four more woes
[23] Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites[38][39]! for ye pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have omitted the weightier matters[16] of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith[42]: these ought[17] ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone.
[24] Ye blind guides,[3] which strain at a gnat, and swallow a camel.
[25] Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites[38][39]! for ye make clean the outside of the cup and of the platter, but within they are full of extortion and excess. [26] Thou blind Pharisee, cleanse first that which is within the cup and platter, that the outside of them may be clean also.
[27] Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites[38][39]! for ye are like unto whited sepulchres, which indeed appear beautiful outward, but are within full of dead men's bones, and of all uncleanness. [28] Even so ye also outwardly appear righteous unto men, but within ye are full of hypocrisy[43] and iniquity[44].
[29] Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites[38][39]! because ye build the tombs of the prophets, and garnish the sepulchres of the righteous,
[30] And say, If we had been in the days of our fathers, we would not have been partakers with them in the blood of the prophets.
[31] Wherefore ye be witnesses unto yourselves, that ye are the children of them which killed the prophets.
[32] Fill ye up then the measure of your fathers.
Generation of vipers
[33] Ye serpents, ye generation of vipers, how can ye escape the damnation of hell?
[34] Wherefore, behold, I send unto you prophets, and wise men, and scribes: and some of them ye shall kill and crucify; and some of them shall ye scourge in your synagogues, and persecute them from city to city:
[35] That upon you may come all the righteous blood shed upon the earth, from the blood of righteous Abel unto the blood of Zacharias son of Barachias, whom ye slew between the temple and the altar.
[36] Verily I say unto you, All these things shall come upon this generation.
Lament over Jerusalem
[37] O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets, and stonest them which are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not!
[38] Behold, your house is left unto you desolate.
[39] For I say unto you, Ye shall not see me henceforth, till ye shall say, Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord.

Footnotes
- ↑ The way of error
- 2 Peter 2:15 Which have forsaken the right way, and are gone astray, following the way of Balaam [the son] of Bosor, who loved the wages of unrighteousness;
- Jude 1:11 "Woe unto them! for they have gone in the way of Cain, and ran greedily after the error of Balaam for reward, and perished in the gainsaying of Core. 12 These are spots(not "unspotted" like Pure Religion) in your feasts of charity, when they feast with you, feeding themselves without fear: clouds [they are] without water, carried about of winds; trees whose fruit withereth, without fruit, twice dead, plucked up by the roots;"
- Revelation 2:14-17 "But I have a few things against thee, because thou hast there them that hold the doctrine of Balaam, who taught Balac to cast a stumblingblock before the children of Israel, to eat things sacrificed unto idols, and to commit fornication ("to permit one’s self to be drawn away by another into idolatry"). 15 So hast thou also them that hold the doctrine of the Nicolaitans, which thing I hate. 16 Repent; or else I will come unto thee quickly, and will fight against them with the sword of my mouth. 17 He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the hidden manna, and will give him a white stone, and in the stone a new name written, which no man knoweth saving he that receiveth [it]."
- Ezekiel 16:49 "Behold, this was the iniquity of thy sister Sodom, pride, fulness of bread, and abundance of idleness was in her and in her daughters, neither did she strengthen the hand of the poor and needy."
- The way of the world is the way of Cain and His city-state, the Corban of the Pharisees and the cities of blood, Nimrod and the Nicolaitan, Babylon and Balaam, Sumer and Sodom, Pharaoh and the foolishness of Saul, and more recently FDR and LBJ and all the welfare States who use legal charity which is not The Way of Christ, the Kingdom of God nor the righteousness of God.
- ↑ Spotted and unspotted
- 1 Timothy 6:14 "That thou keep [this] commandment without spot <aspilos>, unrebukeable, until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ:"
- James 1:27 "Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, [and] to keep himself unspotted <aspilos> from the world.
- 1 Peter 1:19 "But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish <amomos> and without spot <aspilos>:"
- 2 Peter 3:13 "Nevertheless we, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness. 14 Wherefore, beloved, seeing that ye look for such things, be diligent that ye may be found of him in peace, without spot <aspilos>, and blameless <amometos>. 15 And account [that] the longsuffering of our Lord [is] salvation..."
- Hebrews 9:14 "How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot <amomos> to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?"
- 2 Peter 2:13 "And shall receive the reward of unrighteousness, [as] they that count it pleasure to riot in the day time. Spots <spilos> [they are] and blemishes<momos>, sporting themselves with their own deceivings while they feast with you; 14 Having eyes full of adultery, and that cannot cease from sin; beguiling unstable souls: an heart they have exercised with covetous practices; cursed children:"
- Jude 1:16 "These are murmurers, complainers, walking after their own lusts; and their mouth speaketh great swelling [words], having men’s persons in admiration because of advantage... 21 "Keep yourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life. 22 And of some have compassion, making a difference: 23 And others save with fear, pulling [them] out of the fire; hating even the garment spotted <spiloo> by the flesh. 24 Now unto him that is able to keep you from falling, and to present [you] faultless <amomos> before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy,"
- ↑ 3.0 3.1 3.2 False prophets and Guru theories
- Isaiah 42:16 "And I will bring the blind by a way [that] they knew not; I will lead them in paths [that] they have not known: I will make darkness light before them, and crooked things straight. These things will I do unto them, and not forsake them. 17 They shall be turned back, they shall be greatly ashamed, that trust in graven images, that say to the molten images, Ye [are] our gods. 18 Hear, ye deaf; and look, ye blind, that ye may see."
- Isaiah 30:20 "And [though] the Lord give you the bread of adversity, and the water of affliction, yet shall not thy teachers be removed into a corner any more, but thine eyes shall see thy teachers: 21 And thine ears shall hear a word behind thee, saying, This [is] the way, walk ye in it, when ye turn to the right hand, and when ye turn to the left. 22 Ye shall defile also the covering of thy graven images of silver, and the ornament of thy molten images of gold: thou shalt cast them away as a menstruous cloth; thou shalt say unto it, Get thee hence. 23 Then shall he give the rain of thy seed,..."
- Matthew 13:13 "Therefore speak I to them in parables: because they seeing see not; and hearing they hear not, neither do they understand."
- Matthew 15:14 "Let them alone: they be blind leaders of the blind. And if the blind lead the blind, both shall fall into the ditch."
- Luke 4:18 The Spirit of the Lord [is] upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recoveing of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised,
- John 9:39 ¶ "And Jesus said, For judgment I am come into this world, that they which see not might see; and that they which see might be made blind."
- Luke 6:39 "And he spake a parable unto them, Can the blind lead the blind? shall they not both fall into the ditch? 40 The disciple is not above his master: but every one that is perfect shall be as his master."
- Acts 13:11 "And now, behold, the hand of the Lord [is] upon thee, and thou shalt be blind, not seeing the sun for a season. And immediately there fell on him a mist and a darkness; and he went about seeking some to lead him by the hand."

- Luke 11:52 "Woe unto you, lawyers! for ye have taken away the key of knowledge: ye entered not in yourselves, and them that were entering in ye hindered."
- Luke 13:17 And when he had said these things, all his adversaries were ashamed <2617>: and all the people rejoiced for all the glorious things that were done by him.
- Matthew 11:21 Woe unto thee, Chorazin! woe unto thee, Bethsaida! for if the mighty works, which were done in you, had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes.
- Matthew 18:7 Woe unto the world because of offences! for it must needs be that offences come; but woe to that man by whom the offence cometh!
- Matthew 23:13 "But woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye shut up the kingdom of heaven against men: for ye neither go in [yourselves], neither suffer ye them that are entering to go in. 14 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye devour widows’ houses, and for a pretence make long prayer: therefore ye shall receive the greater damnation. 15 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye compass sea and land to make one proselyte, and when he is made, ye make him twofold more the child of hell than yourselves. 16 Woe unto you, [ye] blind guides, which say, Whosoever shall swear by the temple, it is nothing; but whosoever shall swear by the gold of the temple, he is a debtor! 17 [Ye] fools and blind: for whether is greater, the gold, or the temple that sanctifieth the gold? 18 And, Whosoever shall swear by the altar, it is nothing; but whosoever sweareth by the gift that is upon it, he is guilty. 19 [Ye] fools and blind: for whether [is] greater, the gift, or the altar that sanctifieth the gift? 20 Whoso therefore shall swear by the altar, sweareth by it, and by all things thereon. 21 And whoso shall swear by the temple, sweareth by it, and by him that dwelleth therein. 22 And he that shall swear by heaven, sweareth by the throne of God, and by him that sitteth thereon. 23 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have omitted the weightier [matters] of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone. 24 [Ye] blind guides, which strain at a gnat, and swallow a camel. 25 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye make clean the outside of the cup and of the platter, but within they are full of extortion and excess. 26 [Thou] blind Pharisee, cleanse first that [which is] within the cup and platter, that the outside of them may be clean also. 27 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are like unto whited sepulchres, which indeed appear beautiful outward, but are within full of dead [men’s] bones, and of all uncleanness. 28 Even so ye also outwardly appear righteous unto men, but within ye are full of hypocrisy and iniquity. 29 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye build the tombs of the prophets, and garnish the sepulchres of the righteous,"

- Luke 22:36 "Then said he unto them, But now, he that hath a purse, let him take [it], and likewise [his] scrip: and he that hath no sword, let him sell his garment, and buy one. 37 For I say unto you, that this that is written must yet be accomplished in me, And he was reckoned among the transgressors: for the things concerning me have an end. 38 And they said, Lord, behold, here [are] two swords. And he said unto them, It is enough."
