Matthew was inspired to explain the kingdom of God to the Jews and the Parthians so that they might repent of the ways of error[1] which were spots in their religion.[2] They needed to repent of systems of social welfare of the cities of blood and seek the way of His righteousness.

We see in V4 a reference to a "wicked[3] and adulterous generation". In Matthew_12:39 also saw a reference to "An evil[3] and adulterous[4] generation". Both the word wicked and the evil are translated from the same Greek word "poneros"[3] which is found throughout the New Testament and associated in Revelation 16:2 with the Mark of the Beast and therefor the Harlot or Whore who rides the beast.
V6 Take heed and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees.
V11 Leaven was not concerning bread.[5]

How many places in the New Testament do we see
the word rock <4073> as a metaphor for faith in Christ?

Is it the people who live by faith and gather together in the name of Christ like Matthew 18:18 says?

Examine these verses in detail.
V20 "tell no man that he was Jesus the Christ."
V24 If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.
Questions
Was Peter made the head of the Church so we could call him "Father" or "Pope" meaning father? Was Jesus going to exault Peter over the Church?[9] Was Jesus saying that he could now exercise authority one over the other?[10]

The Pharisees and Sadducees Demand Signs

[1] The Pharisees also with the Sadducees came, and tempting desired him that he would shew them a sign from heaven.

[2] He answered and said unto them, When it is evening, ye say, It will be fair weather: for the sky is red.

[3] And in the morning, It will be foul weather to day: for the sky is red and lowring. O ye hypocrites, ye can discern the face of the sky; but can ye not discern the signs of the times?

[4] A wicked and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign; and there shall no sign be given unto it, but the sign of the prophet Jonas. And he left them, and departed.

The Leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees

[5] And when his disciples were come to the other side, they had forgotten to take bread.

[6] Then Jesus said unto them, Take heed and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees.

[7] And they reasoned among themselves, saying, It is because we have taken no bread.

Peter Confesses Jesus as the Christ

[13] When Jesus came into the coasts of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, saying, Whom do men say that I the Son of man am?

[14] And they said, Some say that thou art John the Baptist: some, Elias; and others, Jeremias, or one of the prophets.

[15] He saith unto them, But whom say ye that I am?

[16] And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God.

[17] And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed[13] art thou, Simon Barjona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven.

[18] And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter[6], and upon this rock[7] I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.

The keys

[19] And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind (deo)[14] on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose (luo)[15] on earth shall be loosed in heaven.[16]

[20] Then charged he his disciples that they should tell no man that he was Jesus the Christ.

Jesus Foretells His Death and Resurrection

[21] From that time forth began Jesus to shew unto his disciples, how that he must go unto Jerusalem, and suffer many things of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised again the third day.

[22] Then Peter took him, and began to rebuke him, saying, Be it far from thee, Lord: this shall not be unto thee.

[23] But he turned, and said unto Peter, Get thee behind me, Satan: thou art an offence unto me: for thou savourest not the things that be of God, but those that be of men.

Take Up Your Cross and Follow Jesus

[24] Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.

[25] For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: and whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it.

[26] For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?

[27] For the Son of man shall come in the glory of his Father with his angels; and then he shall reward every man according to his works.[17]

[28] Verily I say unto you, There be some standing here, which shall not taste of death, till they see the Son of man coming in his kingdom.

The keys of V17 - V19

These three verses have been extremely important to some Churches that want to believe that Christ was appointing Peter to be the head of the Church.

Cambridge Bible for Schools and Colleges points out that the revelation Peter confesses is not known to Peter by "flesh and blood". That knowing was revealed to Simon but not through "man, but God." The phrase “flesh and blood” was a common Hebrew expression denoting a contrast between the spiritual and the physical.

The Rocks

"(18) Thou art Peter, and upon this rock . . .—It is not easy, in dealing with a text which for many centuries has been the subject-matter of endless controversies, to clear our minds of those “afterthoughts of theology” which have gathered round it, and, in part at least, overlaid its meaning." Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers

Elliott goes on to ask "What is the rock? Peter’s faith (subjective)? or the truth (objective) which he confessed?"

But the rock may just as well be the revelation (apekalypsen)[18] which was given Simon as the truth by the Father of Jesus which has been delivered by the way of the spirit, and not “flesh and blood”.

Simon did not figure this out by eating of the tree of knowledge but received it from the tree of life.

Eliot writes of the "poetry of the Old Testament" which associated the Rock with the power of God, not a man (Deuteronomy 32:4; Deuteronomy 32:18; 2 Samuel 22:3; 2 Samuel 23:3; Psalms 18:2; Psalms 18:31; Psalms 18:46; Isaiah 17:10; Habakkuk 1:12).

Christ is called a rock, Matthew 21:42 "Jesus saith unto them, Did ye never read in the scriptures, The stone which the builders rejected, the same is become the head of the corner: this is the Lord’s doing, and it is marvellous in our eyes?"

Psalms 118:22 The stone [which] the builders refused is become the head [stone] of the corner.
Isaiah 28:16 "Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD, Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, a tried stone, a precious corner stone, a sure foundation: he that believeth shall not make haste."

We see this metaphor of a stone or corner stone repeated in:

Mark 12:10 And have ye not read this scripture; The stone which the builders rejected is become the head of the corner:
Luke 20:17 And he beheld them, and said, What is this then that is written, The stone which the builders rejected, the same is become the head of the corner?
Acts 4:11 This is the stone which was set at nought of you builders, which is become the head of the corner.
Ephesians 2:20 And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner [stone];

Peter was certainly not the rock of faith up to that point. By verse 23 Jesus even tells Peter, "Get thee behind me, Satan: thou art an offence unto me:"

Peter was often impatient and judgmental, quick to anger and violence and also fear, denouncing Christ. In that moment he answered the question Jesus repeated when no one else did. And he did not answer from his own flesh and blood but from the divine revelation of God the Father.[18]

It is the Holy Spirit that is the head of the Church established by Christ.

Lively stones

Peter gives his "Ye also, are lively stones" speech:

1 Peter 2:4 "‭To whom coming, as unto a living stone, disallowed indeed of men, but chosen of God, and precious,‭ 5 Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ."

And even refers to the stone or rock as Christ which enters the heart and mind of a "holy priesthood" through the revelation of the Holy Spirit of those "which believe":

1 Peter 2:7 Unto you therefore which believe he is precious: but unto them which be disobedient, the stone which the builders disallowed, the same is made the head of the corner, 8. "And a stone of stumbling, and a rock of offence, even to them which stumble at the word, being disobedient: whereunto also they were appointed."

Those "which believe" and may be called believers will be found as doers of the Word according to the Doctrine of Jesus.

If we are to believe that the rock of revelation from the Holy Spirit of God is the rock upon which Christ will build His Church then Jesus was not appointing His Church to a succession of men but to those who are happy to allow God to write upon their heart and mind[19] and follow that divine guidance.

Blessed

Christ was already stating he would "appoint" the kingdom to the apostles as His "little flock" in accordance to his plan to take the kingdom[20] from the Pharisees because their Corban was bringing the people back into the bondage of Egypt.

The word "blessed" was not the word for appoint or consecrate but the word for happy.[13]

Happiness, like faith, is gift from the divine Father in Heaven[21] which each of us may pursue as individuals according to the perfect law of liberty.

The Person

Was Christ saying that Simon was blessed with an office of leadership so that we should become a respecter of Peter[22] as the head of the Church? We were never meant to be a respecter of persons[22] either the rich nor poor. We were not to make men rulers over our choices[23] like the rulers of the gentiles, or Nimrod or king of the world. God allows us to go under their authority like Israel did with King Saul but God through Samuel warned us what would happen.

It has never been the way of God that you go under men who exercise authority one over the other.[10]

The Keys

Matthew 16:19 And I will give unto thee the keys[24] of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind[14] on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose[15] on earth shall be loosed in heaven.

The Keys to the Kingdom are what you bind and loose upon the earth with the people around you also binds you accordingly in your spirit.

If you embrace the darkness and deny the truth you shall be consumed by darkness and live in that darkness.

If you bite one another you will be consumed one of another.[25]

If you covet what is your neighbors you shall become merchandise and curse children.

If we will not hear your brother's cry out in anguish, God will not hear you when you cry out.

If you forgive not neither will you be forgiven.

As you judge so shall you be judged.

These are the Keys of the Kingdom!

Who has the keys

We see a similar statement in Matthew 18:18

"Verily I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall bind[14] on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever ye shall loose[15] on earth shall be loosed in heaven."

Here Jesus is not giving authority to anyone, nor setting up a hierarchy of that authority from the top down, nor creating an office of authority, nor is their mention of keys to the pearly gates. We were not to exercise authority one over the other by Jesus decree.[10] The hierarchy of the Church is not one of authority but of service.[9] Nor were we to be the respecter of persons whether they be the wealthy, the poor nor the offices of institutions.[22]

He makes His position clear in Matthew 18:19:

"Again I say unto you, That if two of you shall agree on earth as touching any thing that they shall ask, it shall be done for them of my Father which is in heaven. 20 For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them."

If verse 18 in Matthew 18 is the same as we see in Matthew 16 verse 19 it is clear that the keys are not given to Peter alone but to those who have the ears to hear. To recieve the power and authority we see in the early Church we must gather in the character and name of Christ and for His purpose as they did.

Hiding the keys in hypocrisy

Who are those who have Christ, the Holy Spirit, in their midst today with the "Sound Doctrine" as given us in the Doctrine of Jesus?

Who has allowed the masses to return to the bondage of Egypt?

Who has sanctioned, excused, and even promoted the modern Corban which makes the word of God to none effect which has always been the covetous practices that while claiming to be for their welfare was a snare and a trap?

Has not those covetous practices through governments who exercise authority always made men merchandise and cursed children with the bondage of Egypt as a surety for debt?

Who has neglected the daily ministration of the early Church that once functioned by Pure Religion through Fervent charity?

Who has distracted the people with false religion, crowned kings which oppressed the people while protecting there own apostasy and turned the heart and mind of the people away The Way of Truth toward the public religion of the Beast which has snared and numbered the masses?

Who is the harlot that rides upon the back of the Beast which she raised up through hypocrisy since the days of Lady Godiva?

Repent!

  1. The way of error
    2 Peter 2:15 Which have forsaken the right way, and are gone astray, following the way of Balaam [the son] of Bosor, who loved the wages of unrighteousness;

  5. Bread of oppression

    Jesus and John the Baptist opposed the leaven of Herod, the Pharisees and of the Sadducees because they misinterpreted the way of Moses and the LORD. They collected the resources for their tables of welfare, their social safety net of free bread and care for the needy of society through forced offerings. Peter, Paul, David, and the prophets have been warned us that such covetous practices were setting a snare and a trap. Herod and the Pharisees had set up a system of legal charity rather than fervent charity which always makes the word of God to none effect so that Christ would say the kingdom of God shall be taken from them and given to a nation bringing forth the fruits. We should know that their system "degenerates" the "masses" until they become "perfect savages". Legal charity and its benefits and dainties provided through men who exercise authority are the wages of unrighteousness and the covetous practices that makes men merchandise and will curse children.
