The smoking furnace and a burning lamp

In translation of Genesis 15:17 Abraham speaks of a vision of a Smoking furnace and a burning lamp.

The term vision is seen in the scripture as bammaḥăzeh בַּֽמַּחֲזֶ֖ה or BeitMemChetZayinHey which only appears in this verse. The root word being translated vision also is MemChetZayinHey[1] and is from ChetZayinHey[2] which has been translated see, behold, and even prophesy.

  • ח Chet The Life Force - Dynamic nature of - cause and effect - give life and live.[fence, thread, hedge, chamber...cycle] (Numeric value: 8)
  • זָ ז Zayin The "Crowned" head. Seen with the contradictory meaning of "Service with Valor", but also "Sustenance with Nourishment". Associated with "cut bread" and also "war and provision", meaning literally "sword or weapon" and "crown or ornament". [To Cut or cut off, manacle] (value 7)
  • ה Hey Expression, Thought, Speech, Action. Manifest seeds of thought and life. [Emphasize, jubilation, window, fence] (Numeric value: 5)

This vision is a personal message to Abraham for telling the purpose and practices of the way of God. It speaks of a division a difference in what the world often does and what God desires and is part of a cause and effect built into creation. One type of sacrifice will bring a burning lamp by which men may see the truth and the other brings darkness. There will be "the heavenly city on a hill"[3] that is not like the cities of Babylon and Sumer because of the nature of its sacrifice. One is idolatry because it is a social welfare provided by the sacrifice of fools through covetous practices while the other is rooted in the righteousness of God because it has no leaven but is the result of faith, hope, and charity.

The latter gives a rebirth of the mind and soul of man because he loves the light and the former blinds men because they prefer the darkness.

Abraham will dwell in Gerar and not go in bondage to the idolatry of his father Terah and the bondage to the Nimrods and Abimelechs of the world men make for themselves.

Fear of freedom

This vision of Abram is associated with wisdom and includes the instruction to Fear not.

What is that fear and what produces or encourages it?

Lot was afraid to live outside the protection of the city-state as many people at that time were also afraid. This vision and life's struggles will show Abraham the way of righteousness as opposed to the way of the wicked.[4]

By verse 17 we see the words "And it came to pass, that, when the sun went down, and it was dark, behold a smoking furnace, and a burning lamp that passed between those pieces" of the sacrifice.

What does the symbolism of a smokingעָשָׁן֙ ashan smoking[5] furnace ( תַּנּוּר‎ tannuwr[6] tell us within the meaning of the vision?

Departing from the cities

This is a vision of Abram after departing from the city states of Haran and Ur with many[7] souls[8] and there is a great quandary as to its meaning.

It has to do with the sacrifices people may make and dividing them or judging them as a good thing or not. There was smoke that came from the sacrifices of Cain and Able. Some will tell you that the stories are literal and they may be but they also may be allegories.

One sacrifice produced smoke that went up and the other did not. Both were allowed but produced different outcomes.

When Sodom and Gomorrah were destroyed there was also smoke of a furnace.[9] That smoke[10] was from a different Hebrew word and so to was the term for furnace[11] different.

Smoke of Ashan

The smoking (עָשָׁן֙ ashan)[5] furnace (תַנּ֤וּר)[6] or anan tannur may be a “portable oven or a firepot".

The word smoking appears in the text as the Hebrew letters עָשָׁן֙ or AyinShinNun or ashan'[12]. The term ashan is both a noun and as a verb which can also mean both "smoking" and "smoke", but can also "literally or figuratively" mean "vapor, dust, anger"[13] or as a verb be angry.[5]

What was going on in the cities that might make God angry?

We know God hates the deeds of the Nicolaitan and those deeds are equated with the error of Balaam.

There was sacrifice in Egypt that was compelled by the government which was part of the agreement made with the people and the Pharaoh. In turn the Pharoah provided a form of social welfare and protection for the people in hard times

There is a related word ashaq (AynShinKuf עָשַׁק‎)[14] which can mean to oppress or an oppressor related to defraud and deceitfully gotten.

The dainties of rulers was called deceitful meats in Proverbs. We were told that their tables[15] of welfare were a snare and a trap[16] not only in Proverbs but in David's Psalms and by Paul who quoted him.

We should also know that the Leaven of Herod and the Pharisees also had to do with oppression. Together they set up a system of Corban that "made the word of God to none effect". And Corban is the Hebrew word for sacrifice.

Jesus was about sacrifice and professed charity was a good thing, at least in the form of charity. So can we see that the Corban of the Pharisees was distinctively different than the Corban of Christ?

Furnace of tannuwr

The word translated furnace is תַּנּוּר‎ tannuwr TavNunVavReish.

  • ת Tav is a Seal of a Higher kingdom or realm through faith. The paradigm keter–malchut “The Crown of Sovereignty” from the Tree of Life spiritually linking worlds or realms through an unseen doorway of faith. The Aleph & Tav are the first and last letters. [door sign cross seal] (Numeric value: 400)
  • נ ן Nun Heir to the Throne, Aramaic fish in the Mem (fish moving in flowing waters) or in the Hebrew the Nun may mean the kingdom with a double Nun suggesting spiritual insight in two realms. [fish moving... Activity life] (Numeric value: 50)
  • ו Vav Connection, Connecting realms and worlds or the dividing veil between them. [nail... And, Add, secure, hook] (Numeric value: 6)
  • ר Reish Process of Clarification The "head" or "beginning". Life's revelation. [Head... Person head highest] (Numeric value: 200).

Another word is TavNunChetVavMemHey המוחנת tanchuwmah which is said to means comforter or consolation.

So if המוחנת tanchuwmah means comforter or consolation what does that have to do with the comforter Jesus promised to send to those who followed The Way?

Is it a smoking furnace or an angry furnace? Or is it a furnace at all?

Does the furnace bring the consequences of following the ways found in the City states rather than the way of the altars of Abraham?

The Midrash[17] has Abraham thrown into the fiery furnace of Nimrod over a dispute about what and how to worship. Abraham survived the furnace but his brother was next and he was consumed. Or possibly his lieutenant Yoktan did the deed.[18]

The smoking furnace can be interpreted as a visual representation of the coming affliction and judgment upon Abraham's descendants in Egypt. It is said to symbolize the tribulation they would endure.

The lamp

And a burning lamp may be a source of light. A lamp is often called a neer.[19]

Jesus was a light unto the world and he revealed the way of righteousness that seem to come into conflict with the civil law causing persecution.

Will be able to see what Abraham eventually begin to see as he travelled "between Kadesh[20] and Shur[21], and sojourned in Gerar."

What will Abraham learn?

And are those who claim him as their prophet able to see by the light of his vision what is the way of righteousness and what is the way of unrighteousness?

Jesus talks about the mammon of unrighteousness and the rewards of unrighteousness. Are those wages of unrighteousness the dainties of rulers which like the Corban of Herod's tables make the word of God to none effect?[22]

Isaiah 62:1 "For Zion's sake will I not hold my peace, and for Jerusalem's sake I will not rest, until the righteousness thereof go forth as brightness, and the salvation(וִישׁוּעָתָ֖הּ) thereof as a lamp that burneth...10 Go through(עִבְרוּ֙), go through(עִבְר֤וּ) the gates(בַּשְּׁעָרִ֔ים); prepare ye the way of the people; cast up, cast up the highway; gather out the stones(מֵאֶ֔בֶן mêeḇen); lift up(הָרִ֥ימוּ hārîmū) a standard for the people." See Genesis 28 the ladder.
Ezekiel 18:27 "Again, when the wicked [man] turneth away from his wickedness that he hath committed, and doeth that which is lawful and right, he shall save his soul alive. 28 Because he considereth, and turneth away from all his transgressions that he hath committed, he shall surely live, he shall not die. 29 Yet saith the house of Israel, The way of the Lord is not equal. O house of Israel, are not my ways equal? are not your ways unequal? 30 Therefore I will judge you, O house of Israel, every one according to his ways, saith the Lord GOD. Repent, and turn [yourselves] from all your transgressions; so iniquity shall not be your ruin. 31 Cast away from you all your transgressions, whereby ye have transgressed; and make you a new heart and a new spirit: for why will ye die, O house of Israel? 32 For I have no pleasure in the death of him that dieth, saith the Lord GOD: wherefore turn [yourselves], and live ye."
Jeremiah 5:1 "Run ye to and fro through the streets of Jerusalem, and see now, and know, and seek in the broad places thereof, if ye can find a man, if there be [any] that executeth judgment, that seeketh the truth; and I will pardon it. 2 And though they say, The LORD liveth; surely they swear falsely. 3 O LORD, [are] not thine eyes upon the truth? thou hast stricken them, but they have not grieved; thou hast consumed them, [but] they have refused to receive correction: they have made their faces harder than a rock; they have refused to return. 4 Therefore I said, Surely these [are] poor; they are foolish: for they know not the way of the LORD, [nor] the judgment of their God. 5 I will get me unto the great men, and will speak unto them; for they have known the way of the LORD, [and] the judgment of their God: but these have altogether broken the yoke, [and] burst the bonds."
