The book of Joel

Joel was originally from Judah/Judea, and, judging from its prominence in his prophecy, was quite possibly a prophet associated with the ritual of Solomon's or even the Second temple. According to a long-standing tradition, Joel was buried in Gush Halav, known in Josephus as Gischala.

Because Israel had sinned, God would come in judgement on them. Thus, the day of the Lord is about God chastening his people, whether it be through the Babylonian invasion of Jerusalem or a locust plague described in Joel 2:1–11.

Joel's pressing mission is to focus on convincing the people to return to the Lord before it is too late. He is confident that a return to the Lord is the only way not to perish, and he knows that the people want to survive. He announces that there is still time to return to the Lord (Joel 2:12).

According to the Eastern Orthodox Christian hymns, the ancient hymnographer Anatolius links Joel's prophecy to the birth of Christ. In Joel 2:30, he says that the blood refers to the Incarnation of Jesus Christ, the fire to the Divinity of Christ, and the pillars of smoke to the Holy Spirit.

Lament over a great locust plague and drought (1:1–2:17) and the effects of these events on and flow of life of the nation effecting the supply of offerings for the Temple in Jerusalem, causing a for a national lament (1:1–20).

Joel is actually speaking allegorically of an apocalyptic events in the heart and soul of the nation.

Ancient Jewish opinion saw the locusts as allegorical interpretations of Israel's enemies which are within us. This allegorical interpretation has been applied to the church by many and can be applied today to the people of the world.

You can compare the locusts to an army, allowed by God (2:1–11) that choose the evil ways of iniquity, cutting off the flow of charity that made the nation great.

Joel is calling for national repentance, to think differently, so the inevitable judgment of God may be reversed.(2:12–17).

There is a promise of blessings (2:18–32 or 2:18–3:5) and the banishment of the locust spirit and restoration of a life giving productivity as a divine response to national repentance (2:18–27).

Future holds gifts for the children of light who repent when they face cosmic cataclysm (2:28–32 or 3:1–5).

Coming judgment on the Kingdom of Judah's enemies: the Philistines, the Kingdom of Edom, and the Kingdom of Egypt (3:1–21 or 4:1–21) are representative of the curses that com when we stray from the way of God.

In the New Testament, his prophecy of the outpouring of God's Holy Spirit upon all people was notably quoted by Saint Peter in his Pentecost sermon in Acts 2:16-18. (See also Revelation 9:3, 7-9.)

Many scholars date the book of Joel to 835 B.C., who served before the fall of the northern kingdom of Israel (721 B.C.) and the southern kingdom of Judah (586 B.C.). Other pre-exilic prophets include Obadiah, Jonah, Hosea, Amos, Isaiah, and Micah. Joel is one of the earliest prophets – only Obadiah prophesied before his time (845 B.C.).

835 B.C. was a period of turmoil in Judah, from the end of the wicked reign of Queen Athaliah, granddaughter of the evil King Omri of Israel, to the reign of King Joash about six years.

Omri was, according to the Hebrew Bible, the sixth king of Israel. He was a successful military campaigner who extended the northern kingdom of Israel. Other monarchs from the House of Omri are Ahab, Ahaziah, Joram, and Athaliah.

Joel prophesied possibly at the end of the six-year reign. “The name Joel means ‘Jehovah is God’ similar to the New Testament confession, ‘Jesus is Lord.’”

They may have meant real locusts but they include a time of famine and financial ruin that is the result of sin and neglect. It is a time when to their shame the meat offering[1] and the drink offering[2] is cut off.

But we are told that there is also a need to Awake, you drunkards:[3] because of the devastation the locusts caused.

Drunk on what?

In (8-12) Judah mourns because of the locusts’ destruction.

What are the locust a symbol of?[4]

What was the foolishness of Saul?

How did they "Consecrate a fast"?

Why "Call a sacred assembly" and "Gather the elders"?

How can the religious leaders repent and gird themselves?

To "Consecrate a fast" is about getting right with God and His Called Out.

Joel 1:9 "The meat offering[1] and the drink offering[2] is cut off from the house of the LORD; the priests, the LORD’S ministers, mourn."

Joel 2:14 "Who knoweth [if] he will return and repent, and leave a blessing behind him; [even] a meat offering and a drink offering unto the LORD your God?"

Comments for Joel 1
What was the sin of Israel that brought destruction?
Joel mentions the palmerworm [5]
Many things of the people will be eaten by these worms as as seen in the noncanonical Ecclesiasticus 19:3 also called the Wisdom[6], in Job the worms consume the garments of others to build their house[7], Psalms the consuming worm is like vanity[8] but Isaiah speaks as God's righteousness shall be for ever from generation to generation.[9]

Daniel also talks about kingdom of God, His dominion,[10] is from generation to generation.[11] Which is why Joel also does the same here and in Joel 3[12] if we dwell in Jerusalem which means double peace. Jesus also warns of the worms of moths eating our substance entrusted to rulers.[13]

A key to understanding the prophecy is to understand the curse.
We can see the palmerworm,[5] the locust, the cankerworm[14], and the caterpiller[15] eat up everything. Who or what are they?

The locust,[4] palmerworm, cankerworm, and caterpiller are the bureaucrats of a system of governance, that "erected a multitude of New Offices, and sent hither swarms of Officers to harass our people, and eat out their substance[16] through force. It is the Corban of the Pharisees and the foolishness of Saul. It is the covetous practices that allows us to be biting one another[17] until we are devoured by the beast of our own making.

Joel 1

1 The word of the LORD that came to Joel the son of Pethuel.

2 Hear this, ye old men, and give ear, all ye inhabitants of the land. Hath this been in your days, or even in the days of your fathers?

3 Tell ye your children of it, and let your children tell their children, and their children another generation.

4 That which the palmerworm[5] hath left hath the locust[4] eaten; and that which the locust[4] hath left hath the cankerworm[14] eaten; and that which the cankerworm hath left hath the caterpiller[15] eaten.

5 Awake, ye drunkards, and weep; and howl, all ye drinkers of wine, because of the new wine;[18] for it is cut off from your mouth.

6 For a nation is come up upon my land, strong, and without number, whose teeth are the teeth of a lion, and he hath the cheek teeth of a great lion.

7 He hath laid my vine waste, and barked my fig tree: he hath made it clean bare, and cast it away; the branches thereof are made white.

8 Lament like a virgin girded with sackcloth for the husband of her youth.

9 The meat offering[1] and the drink offering[2] is cut off from the house of the LORD; the priests, the LORD'S ministers, mourn.

10 The field is wasted, the land mourneth; for the corn is wasted: the new wine[18] is dried up, the oil languisheth.

11 Be ye ashamed, O ye husbandmen; howl, O ye vinedressers, for the wheat and for the barley; because the harvest of the field is perished.

12 The vine is dried up, and the fig tree languisheth; the pomegranate tree, the palm tree also, and the apple tree, even all the trees of the field, are withered: because joy[19] is withered away from the sons of men.

13 Gird yourselves, and lament, ye priests: howl, ye ministers of the altar: come, lie all night in sackcloth, ye ministers of my God: for the meat offering and the drink offering is withholden from the house of your God.

14 Sanctify ye a fast, call a solemn assembly, gather the elders and all the inhabitants of the land into the house of the LORD your God, and cry unto the LORD,

15 Alas for the day! for the day of the LORD is at hand, and as a destruction from the Almighty shall it come.

16 Is not the meat cut off before our eyes, yea, joy[20] and gladness[21] from the house of our God?

17 The seed is rotten under their clods, the garners are laid desolate, the barns are broken down; for the corn is withered.

18 How do the beasts groan! the herds of cattle are perplexed, because they have no pasture; yea, the flocks of sheep are made desolate.

19 O LORD, to thee will I cry: for the fire hath devoured the pastures of the wilderness, and the flame hath burned all the trees of the field.

20 The beasts of the field cry also unto thee: for the rivers of waters are dried up, and the fire hath devoured the pastures of the wilderness.

Blow ye the trumpet in Zion as a warning of a day of darkness and of gloominess and chaos as they shall run to and fro in the city with verse 10 sounding like Revelation. [22]
By verse 12 they are called to turn to the LORD and repenteth him of the evil speaking of offering unto the LORD and fasting in a call of a solemn assembly: Gather the people, sanctify the congregation, assemble the elders, likely in the Tens with the priests and ministers of the religion of the people who were to live by the righteousness of God.
We can change if we "Awake" because we are drinkers of wine,[23] because of the new wine.[18] From a word meaning crush, press. The idea of a "new wine" is often the word 08492 ^שׁורית^ tiyrowsh \@tee-roshe’ TavYodReishVavShin or ^שׁרית^ tiyrosh \@tee-roshe’\@ from 03423 ^שׁרי^ yarash YodReishShin (meaning dispossess, take possession of, inherit,) in the sense of expulsion meaning "freshly pressed".
Luke 16:16 The law and the prophets [were] until John: since that time the kingdom of God is preached, and every man presseth into it.
He predicts devastation and warns that we need to fast from those things were indulging in and our priests and those who attended the altars needed to become humble and put on sackcloth.[24]
What is Religion and what is Pure Religion? What was the Christian conflict with Rome?
Learn what the story of the Golden calf was really about.
The Beasts are the perfect savages of Polybius and give power to the makers of the Mark of the Beast by taking a bite out of one another through covetous practices of the Corban of the world.
God will remember them if they repent of that which got them drunk, those feasts of the wages of unrighteousness, who like the zombies they have become make the word of God to none effect.
God will make Israel great again if they return to the freewill offerings.
We are told in verse 30 that God will shew wonders in the heavens and in the earth, blood, and fire, and pillars of smoke.
The revelation images of the sun turning into darkness, and the moon into blood with deliverance for those who call on the name of the LORD with the mount Zion which is people in the state of Jerusalem meaning in double peace, or word and deed.
Here we also see mentioned a remnant whom the LORD shall call like the Levites and the ekklesia or Church in the wilderness.
Understanding that the Corban of the Pharisees was a socialist system set up by Herod and the baptism of those those priests who used force and who were greedy for gain. Jesus denounced their system because it was a table which claimed to be for your welfare but was a "snare and a trap". When the people consent to have one purse those systems of socialism will bring "the years that the locust hath eaten, the cankerworm, and the caterpiller, and the palmerworm" spoken of in Joel 2:25. Christ came to restore everyman unto his possession, and unto his family.[25]
The bondage of Egypt[26] was a socialists system where a portion of the labor of everyman was taken by force[27] Christ came top Jerusalem to build a house of charity supported by "freewill offerings".[28]
Clearly John the Baptist offered a different Baptism than Herod and the Pharisees who were making the word of God to no effect with their system of sacrifice. And Jesus forbid his followers from being like those socialist and communist governments who claim to be benefactors of the masses but exercise authority one over the other.[29]
Acts 2:28-31 correlates to verses in Joel 2:28-32 where The Lord Will Pour Out His Spirit upon those people who repent of the "covetous practices" like Democratic Socialism where the people "bite one another" until they are devoured as "merchandise" and "curse children".

The Day of the Lord

1 ¶ Blow ye the trumpet in Zion, and sound an alarm in my holy mountain: let all the inhabitants of the land tremble: for the day of the LORD cometh, for it is nigh at hand;

2 A day of darkness and of gloominess, a day of clouds and of thick darkness, as the morning spread upon the mountains: a great people and a strong; there hath not been ever the like, neither shall be any more after it, even to the years of many generations.

3 A fire devoureth before them; and behind them a flame burneth: the land is as the garden of Eden before them, and behind them a desolate wilderness; yea, and nothing shall escape them.

4 The appearance of them is as the appearance of horses; and as horsemen, so shall they run.

5 Like the noise of chariots on the tops of mountains shall they leap, like the noise of a flame of fire that devoureth the stubble, as a strong people set in battle array.

6 Before their face the people shall be much pained: all faces shall gather blackness.

7 They shall run like mighty men; they shall climb the wall like men of war; and they shall march every one on his ways, and they shall not break their ranks:

8 Neither shall one thrust another; they shall walk every one in his path: and when they fall upon the sword, they shall not be wounded.

9 They shall run to and fro in the city; they shall run upon the wall, they shall climb up upon the houses; they shall enter in at the windows like a thief.

10 The earth shall quake before them; the heavens shall tremble: the sun and the moon shall be dark, and the stars shall withdraw their shining:

11 And the LORD shall utter his voice before his army: for his camp is very great: for he is strong that executeth his word: for the day of the LORD is great and very terrible; and who can abide it?

12 Therefore also now, saith the LORD, turn ye even to me with all your heart, and with fasting, and with weeping, and with mourning:

13 And rend your heart, and not your garments, and turn unto the LORD your God: for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and repenteth him of the evil.

14 Who knoweth if he will return and repent, and leave a blessing behind him; even a meat offering[1] and a drink offering[2] unto the LORD your God?

15 Blow the trumpet in Zion, sanctify a fast, call a solemn assembly:

16 Gather the people, sanctify the congregation, assemble the elders, gather the children, and those that suck the breasts: let the bridegroom go forth of his chamber, and the bride[30] out of her closet.

17 Let the priests, the ministers of the LORD, weep between the porch and the altar, and let them say, Spare thy people, O LORD, and give not thine heritage to reproach, that the heathen should rule over them: wherefore should they say among the people, Where is their God?

The Lord Had Pity

18 Then will the LORD be jealous for his land, and pity his people.

19 Yea, the LORD will answer and say unto his people, Behold, I will send you corn, and wine, and oil, and ye shall be satisfied therewith: and I will no more make you a reproach among the heathen:

20 But I will remove far off from you the northern army, and will drive him into a land barren and desolate, with his face toward the east sea, and his hinder part toward the utmost sea, and his stink shall come up, and his ill savour shall come up, because he hath done great things.

21 Fear not, O land; be glad and rejoice: for the LORD will do great things.

22 Be not afraid, ye beasts of the field: for the pastures of the wilderness do spring, for the tree beareth her fruit, the fig tree and the vine do yield their strength.

23 Be glad then, ye children of Zion, and rejoice in the LORD your God: for he hath given you the former rain moderately, and he will cause to come down for you the rain, the former rain, and the latter rain in the first month.

24 And the floors shall be full of wheat, and the fats shall overflow with wine and oil.

25 And I will restore to you the years that the locust hath eaten, the cankerworm, and the caterpiller, and the palmerworm, my great army which I sent among you.

26 And ye shall eat in plenty, and be satisfied, and praise the name of the LORD your God, that hath dealt wondrously with you: and my people shall never be ashamed.

27 And ye shall know that I am in the midst of Israel, and that I am the LORD your God, and none else: and my people shall never be ashamed.

The Lord Will Pour Out His Spirit

28 And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions:

29 And also upon the servants and upon the handmaids in those days will I pour out my spirit.

30 And I will shew wonders in the heavens and in the earth, blood, and fire, and pillars of smoke.

31 The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and the terrible day of the LORD come.

32 And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the LORD shall be delivered: for in mount Zion and in Jerusalem shall be deliverance, as the LORD hath said, and in the remnant whom the LORD shall call.

Joel 3

Comments Joel 3
This is an additional prophesy stated that God "shall bring again the captivity of Judah and Jerusalem."
Egypt, Babylon, and Judea were all captivities and we are again told that we would be made merchandise and entangled in the elements of the world which will be a valley of Judgment (Jehoshaphat).
Verse 3 is also about how we would curse children because of covetous practices like Peter warned.
Once we understand the roll of temples in the daily ministration of society we can surmise that there are two types, those that get the people drunk on entitlements provided through force of authority, fear of oppression, and fealty to institutions and those who provide salvation in the world through faith, hope and charity.
Again there is talk of the sun and moon being dark as there is a valley of decision for us all.
Those who choose the bondage of Egypt and shed innocent blood as we see explained many times in the Biblical text including Proverbs 1 where the people consent to have one purse in a socialist state where they are greedy for gain at the expense of others and are they themselves snared in a net of their own making.

1 ¶ For, behold, in those days, and in that time, when I shall bring again the captivity of Judah and Jerusalem,

2 I will also gather all nations, and will bring them down into the valley of Jehoshaphat, and will plead with them there for my people and for my heritage Israel, whom they have scattered among the nations, and parted my land.

3 And they have cast lots for my people; and have given a boy for an harlot, and sold a girl for wine, that they might drink.

4 Yea, and what have ye to do with me, O Tyre, and Zidon, and all the coasts of Palestine? will ye render me a recompence? and if ye recompense me, swiftly and speedily will I return your recompence upon your own head;

5 Because ye have taken my silver and my gold, and have carried into your temples my goodly pleasant things:

6 The children also of Judah and the children of Jerusalem have ye sold unto the Grecians, that ye might remove them far from their border.

7 Behold, I will raise them out of the place whither ye have sold them, and will return your recompence upon your own head:

8 And I will sell your sons and your daughters into the hand of the children of Judah, and they shall sell them to the Sabeans, to a people far off: for the LORD hath spoken it.

9 Proclaim ye this among the Gentiles; Prepare war, wake up the mighty men, let all the men of war draw near; let them come up:

10 Beat your plowshares into swords, and your pruninghooks into spears: let the weak say, I am strong.

11 Assemble yourselves, and come, all ye heathen, and gather yourselves together round about: thither cause thy mighty ones to come down, O LORD.

12 Let the heathen be wakened, and come up to the valley of Jehoshaphat: for there will I sit to judge all the heathen round about.

13 Put ye in the sickle, for the harvest is ripe: come, get you down; for the press is full, the fats overflow; for their wickedness is great.

14 Multitudes, multitudes in the valley of decision: for the day of the LORD is near in the valley of decision.

15 The sun and the moon shall be darkened, and the stars shall withdraw their shining.

16 The LORD also shall roar out of Zion, and utter his voice from Jerusalem; and the heavens and the earth shall shake: but the LORD will be the hope of his people, and the strength of the children of Israel.

17 So shall ye know that I am the LORD your God dwelling in Zion, my holy mountain: then shall Jerusalem be holy, and there shall no strangers pass through her any more.

18 And it shall come to pass in that day, that the mountains shall drop down new wine,[18] and the hills shall flow with milk, and all the rivers of Judah shall flow with waters, and a fountain shall come forth of the house of the LORD, and shall water the valley of Shittim.[31]

19 Egypt shall be a desolation, and Edom shall be a desolate wilderness, for the violence against the children of Judah, because they have shed innocent blood in their land.

20 But Judah shall dwell for ever, and Jerusalem from generation to generation.Template:Joel

21 For I will cleanse their blood that I have not cleansed: for the LORD dwelleth in Zion.
