Ruben's painting of the beloved disciple. The Gospel of John is a uniquely written scripture from the "Johannine society"[1].

The Gospel According to John

The Gospel According to John (also referred to as the Gospel of the beloved Disciple, the Fourth Gospel. This Gospel of John was written in Greek by an anonymous author but attributed to John.

The Gospel of John identifies its author as "the disciple whom Jesus loved." Although the text does not name this disciple, by the beginning of the 2nd century, a tradition had begun to form which identified him with John the Apostle, one of the Twelve.

Some notable New Testament scholars affirm another tradition. They trace it instead to a "Johannine community" which traced its traditions to John; the gospel itself shows signs of having been composed in three "layers", reaching its final form about 90–100 AD.

The gospel contains more direct claims to eyewitness origins than any of the other Gospel traditions.

It begins with the Logos being made flesh and dwelling among us. The Ancient Greek philosophers used the term logos which meant the principle of true universal reason or what became identified as Right Reason. It has been compared to a Hebrew concept of Wisdom. Jewish philosopher with Greek approach like Philo merged ideas and rhetoric concerning wisdom with the Greek version of the logos. Logos of God is not subject to the opinions of man nor the authorities in the world. The source of the Logos of Jesus was from the Tree of life, the Holy Spirit and not merely the knowledge of men. This makes Jesus the incarnation of the Logos.

This makes the Logos of John is the manifestation of Divine Will. Merely reading the Targums or the Bible in your Churches and synagogues does not mean what you are hearing is the Logos nor the Divine Will or Word but merely words[2] translated and privately interpreted by people in and of the world.

Purpose

The fundamental purpose of this gospel seems to be at least convince people that Jesus is the Messiah. But is also a record to remind and strengthens the faith of those who already know that Jesus is the Messiah of the kingdom of God at hand.

By putting many of these description and explanations where people could read and ponder them and their significance in the daily life of early Christians who had formed a network of charity and love that sustained them through the dearths that swept across the Roman Empire during its decline and fall.

Sources

Some scholars state that "vocabulary, grammar, and style make it doubtful that the book could have been put into its present form by the same person". Chapter 21 is very stylistically different from the body of the text but also some of the short accounts of miracles seem to suggest they were written at different times if not by different people.

There is also the Epistles which may all be written by the same person but not the same person who wrote the Gospel. And then where they were written has come into question because of references from Papias and Polycarp suggest that the Johannine epistles originated in Asia Minor.

And then there is the Book of Revelation which varies enough from the other manuscripts and even within the Book of Revelation to create doubt about a single author that was spawning considerable debate from the earliest dates concerning the identity of the author(s). [3]

There have been scholars who see that the phraseology of at least the first letter of John and what is used in the Gospel are so similar they see a link and they see the doctrine as uniform but that should be expected but of course they have a vested interest in establish a uniform authorship.

While they often claim a uniform doctrine with an honest examination of what they often see as the doctrine of these scriptures does not always seem to be uniform with the doctrine of Jesus which brings the question of why there are 40,000+ denominations

The Johannine society had access to many sources that were circulating among the people and in private letters. The Gospel of John was an opportunity to share many of these description sources and quotes from hundreds of Christian sources. The Christian community was a vast network of people whose "union and discipline", mutual trust and faith allowed them create a cohesive society.

Insertions

There was what was called the Signs Gospel or the semeia source but it is certainly a hypothetical gospel account that was undoubtedly a real recording of the miracles of Jesus written before John. Many of the accounts of events were circulating among those early Christians for years. They were not put together in a single place and were not entirely unified as one text. Any Gospel coming out of the Johannine society would be amiss not to include these often first hand accounts.

There would be no reason to rewrite an account in your own words especially if you trusted the copy or account you had before you. Others claims that John 6 verse 4 was added much later for a variety of reasons including the fact that it is not seen in older manuscripts but older is not always better. It is just as likely if not more believable that someone missed a sentence or verse rather than add one.

The chapter 21 stylistically differences from the body of the text does not mean that the author was not inspired to insert a previous text. No one was going to be in danger of charges of plagiarism. Ultimately the question is was this scripture coming out of the Johannine society meeting the requirement to come into existence through the power of Holy Spirit or not?

Spiritual authors and readers

This Gospel does not seem to be as concerned with narrative and chronology of the story nor historical proofs but in the personal nature of Jesus as the Christ and Messiah, King of Judea, His oneness with the illusive Logos of the Divine God of creation, His appointment of the kingdom of God to the Church after it was taken from the Pharisees[4] who sat in the seat of Moses.

Only the Holy Spirit writing upon your heart and mind will tell you if what you are reading and the message coming to you through the text is the truth. And our role as repentant sons of God if we will follow The Way of the kingdom of God and His righteousness according to the Doctrine of Jesus.

Gnostic or not

It has been debated for over a century if the gospel from the Johannine society[1] was ripe with Gnosticism. This was because the modern Christian is distracted by his refusal to see the light brought about by the Doctrine of Jesus. The peculiar people of the Early Church were bound by a system of faith, hope, and charity while the synagogues of the Pharisees and Sadducees were yoked by a system dependent upon the force, fear, and fealty established under the Fathers of the earth and benefactors who exercise authority.

The Gospel of John contained wording and elements of the Doctrine of Jesus which could be isolated and construed as some form of Gnosticism not yet fabricated at that time. Conflicting opinions about Gnosticism were an outgrowth of the conflict between the new Church of Constantine and The Way of the early Church who chose not covet the dainties of those rulers like Constantine who exercise authority to provide free bread or other benefits.

Once people begin to accept the lie that it is okay to covet their neighbors goods through men who exercise authority they will fill the need to create mysterious doctrines of men to establish a sense of self-righteousness and position of superiority to justify the persecution of any accused heretics which will bring a strong delusion to all the masses.

Ideas about Wisdom or the Logos reach back to creation when God separated the light and darkness, the water from the dryland and even Knowledge as information or revelation from the Holy Spirit of life.

Theologians see ideologies and doctrines behind every leaf in the forest but often mis the trees. Gnostics may teach that salvation comes through secret gnosis or knowledge but it may only considered secret because the people choose to live in darkness, not because someone refuse to tell them or has hid it from us. If you choose not to see or hear[5] the whole truth you may make yourself blind or cause you to follow others who are blind.[6]

Gnostics did not see Jesus as saving everyone but coming that everyone might be saved if they are willing to know him. You can only know Him through revealed wisdom which comes by the Holy Spirit and not merely studying words[2] in a text.

The common misunderstanding of the Gospels is from the willingness to deny the covetous practices of the world are the idolatry of Herod and Rome.

These things will I do unto them, and not forsake them. 17 They shall be turned back, they shall be greatly ashamed, that trust in graven images, that say to the molten images, Ye [are] our gods. 18 Hear, ye deaf; and look, ye blind, that ye may see."
Isaiah 30:20 "And [though] the Lord give you the bread of adversity, and the water of affliction, yet shall not thy teachers be removed into a corner any more, but thine eyes shall see thy teachers: 21 And thine ears shall hear a word behind thee, saying, This [is] the way, walk ye in it, when ye turn to the right hand, and when ye turn to the left. 22 Ye shall defile also the covering of thy graven images of silver, and the ornament of thy molten images of gold: thou shalt cast them away as a menstruous cloth; thou shalt say unto it, Get thee hence. 23 Then shall he give the rain of thy seed,..."
