"The LORD hath a controversy"[1] with His people because through Moses he delivered them out of the bondage of Egypt but they did not remember[2] and went back again because the desired the wages of unrighteousness.
The error of Balaam is the error of the Nicolaitan who are conquered by their own wantonness and covetous practices.
Again Jeremiah warns of brutish pastors[3]
Questions
Can the modern Christians answer the question "what doth the LORD require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God?"
Is your allegiance in the graven images of your own creation because of your covetous practices?
Are you going the way of Balaam and the Nicolaitan which is not the way of Christ nor His righteousness and God hates?[4]
Have you been made merchandise and do you curse children by your deeds which God Hates?
Have the brutish pastors delivered the people back into the bondage of Egypt like the Pharisees did with their Corban?
Are the "treasures of wickedness" the wages of unrighteousness and are they becoming "scant" because of you "wicked balances, and with the bag of deceitful weights"?[5]
Will you repent and seek the kingdom of God and His righteousness by sitting down in the tens as Christ commanded His disciples to make the people do?
What is the weightier matters and what is Real money and just weights and measures.
The solution remains the way of Christ and doing what he commanded and forming a daily ministration through a network of charity and love.

The Indictment of the Lord

1 ¶ Hear ye now what the LORD saith; Arise, contend thou before the mountains, and let the hills hear thy voice. 2 Hear ye, O mountains, the LORD'S controversy, and ye strong foundations of the earth: for the LORD hath a controversy with his people, and he will plead with Israel. 3 O my people, what have I done unto thee? and wherein have I wearied thee? testify against me. 4 For I brought thee up out of the land of Egypt, and redeemed thee out of the house of servants; and I sent before thee Moses, Aaron, and Miriam. 5 O my people, remember now what Balak king of Moab consulted, and what Balaam[6] the son of Beor answered him from Shittim unto Gilgal; that ye may know the righteousness of the LORD.

What Does the Lord Require?

6 Wherewith shall I come before the LORD, and bow myself before the high God? shall I come before him with burnt offerings, with calves of a year old? 7 Will the LORD be pleased with thousands of rams, or with ten thousands of rivers of oil? shall I give my firstborn for my transgression, the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul? 8 He hath shewed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the LORD require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God?[7]

Destruction of the Wicked

9 The LORD'S voice crieth unto the city, and the man of wisdom shall see thy name: hear ye the rod, and who hath appointed it. 10 Are there yet the treasures of wickedness in the house of the wicked, and the scant measure that is abominable? 11 Shall I count them pure with the wicked balances, and with the bag of deceitful weights? 12 For the rich men thereof are full of violence, and the inhabitants thereof have spoken lies, and their tongue is deceitful in their mouth. 13 Therefore also will I make thee sick in smiting thee, in making thee desolate because of thy sins. 14 Thou shalt eat, but not be satisfied; and thy casting down shall be in the midst of thee; and thou shalt take hold, but shalt not deliver; and that which thou deliverest will I give up to the sword. 15 Thou shalt sow, but thou shalt not reap; thou shalt tread the olives, but thou shalt not anoint thee with oil; and sweet wine, but shalt not drink wine. 16 For the statutes of Omri are kept, and all the works of the house of Ahab, and ye walk in their counsels;[8] that I should make thee a desolation, and the inhabitants thereof an hissing: therefore ye shall bear the reproach of my people.

    • "Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have omitted the weightier [matters] of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone." Matthew 23:23

    • "Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. 38 This is the first and great commandment. 39 And the second [is] like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. 40 On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets." Matthew 22:37-40
    • "But ye say, If a man shall say to his father or mother, [It is] Corban, that is to say, a gift, by whatsoever thou mightest be profited by me; [he shall be free]. 12 And ye suffer him no more to do ought for his father or his mother; 13 Making the word of God of none effect through your tradition, which ye have delivered: and many such like things do ye." • "Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach [them], the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven. 20 For I say unto you, That except your righteousness shall exceed [the righteousness] of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven." Matthew 5:19
  8. Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers
    (16) The statutes of Omri.—The people of Judah, instead of keeping the commandments of the Lord diligently, adopted the statutes of the house of Omri, the founder of the idolatrous dynasty of Ahab. They reproduced the sins of the northern kingdom, and their conduct was aggravated by the advantages vouchsafed to them. The greatness of their reproach should therefore be in proportion to the greatness of the glory which properly belonged to them as the people of God.
