There are lots of things that may drug us.

Chemicals or even natural compounds generated in our own body can drug our mind, doing damage that will follow us for the rest of our lives.

Religion and ideas we consume may also be an opiate and drug.[1]

Vanity and pride[2] can control our minds and our imagination.[3]

Passions of desire, fear or hate may drug our minds to compel a pattern of thought which can be self-destructive. When we begin to share the passions of others we may begin to share their thinking like a collective mind. The collective may override the individual until we are more like Robots than men.[4]

Majorities become 'authorities' and may produce a drugging effect to exclude us from The Way of God. Participation with the collective is like a barter with the individuality of our souls upon their table of desire.[5] Our choice to benefit from the greed of the collective grants power to them,[6] and by our choice they return favors, by granting us 'brownie points' in the form of Benefits.

"They zealously affect you, but not well; yea, they would exclude you, that you might affect them." Galatians 4:17

From the context of what is written before verse 17, it is clear "they" intend to turn us to toward bondage (see verse 9). But, "...where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty" 2 Corinthians 3:17, and "stand fast ... in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free" Galatians 5:1. "O foolish Galatians, who hath bewitched you, that ye should not obey the truth ....?" Galatians 3:1.

The religious opiate influences and eventually exercises authority over our mind's ability to grasp or even understand the truth. Just as a drug is effective to block normal biochemical processes in the brain, to hinder sensual perceptions, so also a religious opiate may block the conscience.

Rather than provide the clues which lead toward doing what is right, the seared conscience (seared by the opiate of a religious or political collective) has adopted its zealot's creed to imprison our mind within a tranquil, emotionally moving and impressively sophisticated sphere of belief, faith or allegiance. The more 'super-right' it appears, the more we become convinced of its goodness. An euphoria of self-righteousness blinds or at least stalls our mind's self-criticism.

Those not of the same faith or allegiance must be destroyed like an invading pathogen. No alternative may be allowed within the collective.

Self-criticism is a serious examination and judgment of one's self. It includes the ability to make any choice that is necessary to make right a wrong or a fault. But it requires humility and the willingness to suffer pain and to sacrifice our own ego.[7] Having a correct understanding is an important step toward righteousness but we must be spiritually willing to see the whole truth and admit it, confess it.[8]

Valuable self-criticism will take hold of what is proven to be good and right, and then it will compare self to that proven standard. The standard is Christ Jesus.

How do you measure up?

If the collective crowd that surrounds us, the community around us, is satisfied with our 'brilliant creed' even though it does not meet the standard of Christ ...
If we all choose to sleep[9] preferring to be contented rather than contend with contradictions of the truth...
If we choose to believe we have 'done a good deed' even when the evil we do remains unjustified ...
If we choose to imagine God answers our prayers even though our creed is held above the whole truth of Christ word...
If the Bible is sifted[10] with a selective eye to justify 'our creed', then self-criticism will be in vain.
Ephesians 5:18 says: "And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit;"

The 'wine' we drank did not come from a bottle. It came from pride and its pulpits.[11] It came from a book we bought from the 'christian bookstore'. It came from YouTube videos produced by those who ignored righteousness but tickled ears. It came by our habits established in the constant barrage of unrighteous deeds continually being justified within ourselves by a society which has ordained covetousness as progress.

Our pride may accept anger as being righteous, since it allows no one to dishonor the 'diligent efforts of our vain studies in God's Word", as we make it mean what we want it to mean. And if that vanity is left unchecked, a drunken anger will control our mind to allow the shameful violence directed 'at our critics' which we would not have allowed when our personal anger was 'only a little thing'.

"But now ye also put off all these; anger, wrath, malice, ..." Colossians 2:8
" ... they that be drunken are drunken in the night. But let us, who are of the day, be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love; and for an helmet, the hope of salvation." 1 Thessalonians 5:7,8

The armor of God is the preventative against becoming drugged by the anger and envy of the world. Why not put it on daily? On which day should we climb out of bed without His armor of forgiveness and love correctly fastened to cover us?

Those who are already drugged excuse themselves, or they wonder, "Somebody is drugged."

Who is it?

Either I'm drugged or my critics are drugged".

Pride leads the drugged to believe the critics are the ones who are drugged. Those deeply entrenched in pride are zealously affected in their belief.

Is there any hope for those drugged by vanity and pride?

Ephesians 6 includes the Sword of the Spirit as a tool used to "stand against the wiles of the devil". If one who is truly drugged chooses Truth and Life, then the Sword is able to answer the question as to "Which one of us is drugged?"

For example, test the anger. Does it bear good fruit?

Another example: Test the love. Does it clearly reflect Christ's suffering, His sacrifice for the whole world while forgiving His tormentors?

Are we drugged into thinking our religious, political and Covetous Practices which robs our neighbor and curses our children are a real walk of faith in Christ who forbade them and us from doing the same?

What does God's Word say about faith?

Footnotes

  1. Isaiah 28:1 ¶ Woe to the crown of pride, to the drunkards of Ephraim, whose glorious beauty [is] a fading flower, which [are] on the head of the fat valleys of them that are overcome with wine!
  2. Ecclesiastes 1:2 Vanity of vanities, saith the Preacher, vanity of vanities; all [is] vanity.
  3. Proverbs 13:11 Wealth gotten by vanity shall be diminished: but he that gathereth by labour shall increase.
2 Every way of a man is right in his own eyes: but the LORD pondereth the hearts.
3 To do justice and judgment is more acceptable to the LORD than sacrifice.
4 An high look, and a proud heart, and the plowing of the wicked, is sin.
5 The thoughts of the diligent tend only to plenteousness; but of every one that is hasty only to want.
6 The getting of treasures by a lying tongue is a vanity tossed to and fro of them that seek death.
7 The robbery [spoil] of the wicked shall destroy them; because they refuse to do judgment.
8 ¶ The way of man is froward and strange: but as for the pure, his work is right.
  4. Proverbs 8:13 The fear of the LORD [is] to hate evil: pride, and arrogancy, and the evil way, and the froward mouth, do I hate.
  5. Proverbs 23:1 ¶ When thou sittest to eat with a ruler, consider diligently what [is] before thee: 2 And put a knife to thy throat, if thou be a man given to appetite. 3 Be not desirous of his dainties: for they are deceitful meat.
  6. Proverbs 1:10 ¶ My son, if sinners entice thee, consent thou not. 11 If they say, Come with us, let us lay wait for blood, let us lurk privily for the innocent without cause: 12 Let us swallow them up alive as the grave; and whole, as those that go down into the pit: 13 We shall find all precious substance, we shall fill our houses with spoil: 14 Cast in thy lot among us; let us all have one purse: 15 My son, walk not thou in the way with them; refrain thy foot from their path: 16 For their feet run to evil, and make haste to shed blood. 17 Surely in vain the net is spread in the sight of any bird. 18 And they lay wait for their own blood; they lurk privily for their own lives. 19 So are the ways of every one that is greedy of gain; which taketh away the life of the owners thereof.
  7. Proverbs 29:23 ¶ A man’s pride shall bring him low: but honour shall uphold the humble in spirit.
  8. Proverbs 28:13 ¶ He that covereth his sins shall not prosper: but whoso confesseth and forsaketh [them] shall have mercy.
  9. Proverbs 23:21 For the drunkard and the glutton shall come to poverty: and drowsiness shall clothe [a man] with rags.
  10. Proverbs 26:9 [As] a thorn goeth up into the hand of a drunkard, so [is] a parable in the mouth of fools.
  11. Proverbs 16:18 Pride [goeth] before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall.
