Hebrews 8 Commentary |
* Hebrews 8 is the new covenant chapter. It is the only place in the New Testament that talks about an old and new covenant. There is a great controversy about that new covenant and about how it differs from the old. |
* The second covenant is different from the first, but not for the reason people often think. They are also the same, because God is the same. We do not earn salvation, because it is by grace, but it was also by grace in the old covenant, so that is not what is new. |
* Moses and Jesus were in agreement.[1] But Moses and Jesus were not the same. |
* There appears to be a difference in the Old covenant and the New, but what is that difference? Covenants are contracts and agreements which have parties and terms. |
* Part of the problem was with the people. They tried to emulate the commandments, as if by your own will they could keep the commandments and save themselves. That, of course, would not work, and God knew that all along. There is really no essential difference in the actual intended covenants, because you always had to love the law of God and His righteousness, in order to keep it. |
The Greeks had one word for law. Nomos can mean law as in the Latin words Jus or lex which is merely a statute that results from a social contract. The Old Testament has even more words which some people try to equate with the word law. |
Genesis 26:5 "Because that Abraham obeyed my voice, and kept my charge, my commandments, my statutes, and my laws." |
Many modern preachers are confused and confuse other people. They say a lot of things that are true but they are not consistent with the New Testament writings which are actually very easy to understand if we have ears to hear and eyes to see and not ears that believe a lie because of itching ears. Do not mistake motion for the Holy Spirit. |
The law was only the ten not the 613 or 700 statutes of Moses. Because of this same confusion Paul wrote Romans and Peter said his brother Paul would be writing in his Epistles and “speaking in them of these things; in which are some things hard to be understood, which they that are unlearned and unstable wrest, as they do also the other scriptures, unto their own destruction.” 2 Peter 3:16 |
Moses wrote his statutes to help people understand the ten which still needed to be written upon the hearts.[6] of the people or they would not be able to keep them. The Pharisees twisted the Torah and the mitsvah commandments until they made the word of God to none effect. |
“Many” modern Christians are doing the same because despite what they say they do not really know Jesus as Jesus warned they would do.[7] |
* A main difference was that the law must be written on your heart, in the new covenant; it is not just to be performed. The performance of works is not the result of fear but faith, and if there were no works or little works or works of iniquity, then we know that there is no real faith.[8] |
* Christ and Peter in the New Covnant made it clear that you were not to even want to commit sins like adultery.[9] If you do not forgive, then neither will you be forgiven.[10] |
* Understanding the will of God and the kingdom is not just about studying and words or phrases, but it is dependent upon revelation not Flesh and blood[11]. |
Jesus said if you want Eternal life Keep the Commandments which are The Ten Laws God. The Ten Laws hinges upon the two.[12]
They must be written on your hearts. [13] |
Some will try to tell you that there is a division between what Christ taught, His doctrines and the New Covenant but such teachings of the Modern Church makes the word of God to none effect.[14] |
Any interpretation of Hebrews that voids the doctrines of Jesus are void.
|
[1] Now of the things which we have spoken this is the sum: We have such an high priest, who is set on the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens;
[2] A minister[15] of the sanctuary, and of the true tabernacle, which the Lord pitched, and not man.
[3] For every high priest is ordained to offer gifts and sacrifices: wherefore it is of necessity that this man have somewhat also to offer.
[4] For if he were on earth, he should not be a priest, seeing that there are priests that offer gifts according to the law:
[5] Who serve unto the example and shadow of heavenly things, as Moses was admonished of God when he was about to make the tabernacle: for, See, saith he, that thou make all things according to the pattern shewed to thee in the mount.
[6] But now hath he obtained a more excellent[16] ministry, by how much also he is the mediator of a better[17] covenant, which was established upon better promises.
[7] For if that first covenant had been faultless[18], then should no place have been sought for the second.
[8] For finding fault with them, he saith, Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah:
[9] Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day when I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt; because they continued not in my covenant, and I regarded them not, saith the Lord.
[10] For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, saith the Lord; I will put my laws into their mind, and write them in their hearts[19][20]: and I will be to them a God, and they shall be to me a people:
[11] And they shall not teach every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the Lord: for all shall know me, from the least to the greatest.
[12] For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their sins and their iniquities will I remember no more.
[13] In that he saith, A new covenant, he hath made the first old. Now that which decayeth and waxeth old is ready to vanish away.
Hebrews 12:24 And to Jesus the mediator of the new covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling, that speaketh better things than [that of] Abel.
