Polybius and the Bible warned that an appetite for the dainties of rulers at the expense of others is a covetous practices makes the people human resources and would lead to tribute, taxation and the degeneration of societies like Cain's city state, Nimrod's Babylon and Caesar's Rome. Wantonness is a self-indulgent appetite and desire for things at the expense of others. It may lead to biting one another to obtain benefits where the city is the caldron.

Appetite

An appetite is a "a strong desire or liking for something. "an unquenchable appetite for life" with synonyms: craving, longing, yearning, hankering, hunger, thirst, passion;"

An appetite can be a good thing but over eating can be bad for you. Gluttony is the result of an appetite for more than you need. It is an excess of filling yourself because if you do not eat you feel you are missing something that you think more food can fill or replace. The addiction to consuming what you do not need is often overcome by seeing what you are trying to replace with food that may be missing in your life.

We might have "an unquenchable appetite for life" but if the life we desire belongs to someone else our appetite can become evil and destructive. If you think it is okay to take the life of others then your own life will be forfeited in a new process of your own making. This is because as you judge so shall you be judged.

Polybius wrote over 2000 years ago, "The masses continue with an appetite for benefits and the habit of receiving them by way of a rule of force and violence. The people, having grown accustomed to feed at the expense of others and to depend for their livelihood on the property of others... institute the rule of violence; and now uniting their forces massacre, banish, and plunder,[1] until they degenerate again into perfect savages and find once more a master and monarch."

Polybius believed "All democracies fail" because of the appetite of the people for benefits at the expense of their neighbor.[2]

Long before that Proverbs 23:1 warned all that "When thou sittest to eat with a ruler, consider diligently what [is] before thee: 2 And put a knife to thy throat, if thou be a man given to appetite. 3 Be not desirous of his dainties: for they are deceitful meat."

When men institute the rule of violence and become accustomed to feeding at the public trough at the expense of others and to depend for their livelihood on the property of others... the Kingdom of God "suffeth violence" [3] What should have been for your welfare becomes a snare. The only solution or salvation from that ensuing bondage is to repent and seek the Kingdom of God and His righteousness which is a system of daily ministration through a network of faith hope and a charity function through the perfect law of liberty where every man attends to the weightier matters.

If we are biting our neighbor through governments of the world who force the contributions of the people then we will be devoured and snared until liberty will be destroyed.[4] This appetite is an addiction that is overcome by repentance and the seeking of a network that comes together daily in charitable practices.


Regulating society

Has our unregulated appetite for benefits from the government caused us to become over regulated by the government?

Guns, marijuana, alcohol and tide pods are all “Dangerous!”

Their use should be regulated.

The question is by whom?

People are “Dangerous” too.

But the most “Dangerous!” thing of the last century and one of the most dangerous things throughout the history of man is government and its wars.

This includes not just war on terrorists but also on drugs and poverty.

Government attempts to regulate "illegal substances" has not only increased the police powers of government, thereby reducing the rights of the people, but also it has created an underground criminal industry which perpetrates violent gangs and murders all over the world. It has also made criminals out of millions of people who have done little or no harm to anyone and are often being incarcerated in a growing "prison industrial complex" at unbelievable expense to themselves and the taxpayers.

When people give the government the right and responsibility to make choices for them and their neighbor they are giving government power. Power corrupts. The power to choose and regulate Guns, marijuana, alcohol and tide pods, etc. should be in the hands of the people but the responsibility and repercussions of bad choices should also rest with the people.

  • “When the taste for physical gratifications among them has grown ... the time will come when men are carried away and lose all self-restraint... It is not necessary to do violence to such a people in order to strip them of the rights they enjoy; they themselves willingly loosen their hold... they neglect their chief business which is to remain their own masters.” Alexis de Tocqueville, Democracy in America Volume 2

People should regulate their own use of Guns, marijuana, alcohol and tide pods etc. but the right to be free to choose includes the responsibility for the choices you make.

Before anyone considers legalized substances previously controlled by government they may need to also legalize the consequences of the abuses of those substances. If people make bad choices then they should, (indeed they must) be allowed to suffer the consequences of those bad choices without government intervention.

With the great power of choice, we call liberty, comes great responsibility. Without that stipulation society itself will degenerate into a mob of immoral souls and the foolish will take license to burden the wise with their self-indulgence.

In fact, this has already happened in many areas of society. Somewhere in the evolution of American society, it has become acceptable to take by force from your neighbor what you think you need to be secure and safe. This was listed as a sin at one time by Jews, Christians, and even Muslims. Now they all seem to turn a blind eye to this immoral provision of coveting thy neighbors' goods in today's modern world.

  • “America is great because she is good. If America ceases to be good, America will cease to be great.” Alexis de Tocqueville

Every year people allow the governments to raise the debt ceiling it curses the next generation with the debt of their desires. Our parents in their blindness did it to us and we do it to the next generation if they are allowed to be born at all.

America is no longer great, not because of corruption or the swamp of government, but because of the corruption in our own hearts and minds. Desiring benefits at the expense of your neighbor was a sin among Christians from the beginning. It was the "wages of unrighteousness", the wages of sin.

Americans used to take care of all social welfare of society without looking to the use of force through government institutions. Any institution of government that provides for the social welfare of the people is a move toward socialism and a socialist institution.

  • Democracy extends the sphere of individual freedom, socialism restricts it. Democracy attaches all possible value to each man; socialism makes each man a mere agent, a mere number. Democracy and socialism have nothing in common but one word: equality. But notice the difference: while democracy seeks equality in liberty, socialism seeks equality in restraint and servitude.” Alexis de Tocqueville

You cannot blame the government for the present loss of freedom or the stench arising from your own covetous practices. After all, governments are instituted by men and it is our choices to look to governments of the world rather than one another. We have created the swamp monster through our own wantonness and our selective blindness.

Yes, guns, marijuana, alcohol and tide pods should be regulated by individuals but only by those individuals who will take full responsibility for their lives and the choices they make.

In other words, if people lose their jobs or even injure themselves by abusive bad choices they should not be bailed out by government welfare, social security, Medicaid or Medicare. They should not be rewarded for the self-indulgence and wanton abuse and the adulteration of their own bodies and lives.

Many will cry that such social discipline is not kind but many of those who complain probably already have spoiled children or are like spoiled children themselves. Almost everyone who thinks government welfare is the solution for social problems also believes in evolution. Guaranteed entitlement benefits or bail outs with no regard for individual bad choices undermines society by obfuscating the principle factors of evolution models.

  • “Princes made violence a physical thing.. despotism tried to reach the soul by striking crudely at the body; and the soul, eluding such blows, rose gloriously above it. Tyranny in democratic republics does not proceed in the same way, however. It ignores the body and goes straight for the soul.” Alexis de Tocqueville

The good Samaritan, not the government, pulled the battered man from the ditch who ended up in that desperate state through no fault of his own. If his wounds were self-inflicted a different strategy and criteria may need to be applied for the Samaritan is aiding both the victim and the abuser. Governments are not proficient at such soulful discretion because they are incapable of it.

Charity is the practice of choice in being good and goodness is the product of the soul.

Government has no soul for it is the institution of man, not God. Governments can only choose to offer or give away what belongs to others. There is no charity in that unless what the government has received is freely given. Governments which tax the people only have to give what they have taken away from others at the point of a sword. These are not institutions of charity but of force.

The reason that I am constantly quoting Alexis de Tocqueville is that he saw what made America great and to encourage the postmodernist American that if a Frenchman can figure out the problem, then a true and moral American should be able to institute the solution.

If people want to make America great again they need to start taking back their individual responsibilities. Until Americans or any people, succeed in a democracy or a republic they need to wake up to the fact that to enjoy rights requires that you manage your responsibilities and duties for yourself and to your family and to your fellow man.

This was always done through what the gospel calls Pure Religion.

  • “everybody feels the evil, but no one has courage or energy enough to seek the cure” Alexis de Tocqueville, Democracy in America

People would like to think that democracy is the answer and it would be if not for the people. The problem with most democratic legal systems and the people in them is they are just as addicted to governments and the receiving of benefits as they are likely going to be addicted to other substances currently restricted by the government.

  • “Liberty cannot be established without morality, nor morality without faith.” Alexis de Tocqueville

It is not moral to force one neighbor to provide for another. It is certainly not charity. Tocqueville observed what made America great was its charitable and philanthropic associations of the people within every community, village, and township.

  • "Americans group together to hold fêtes, found seminaries, build inns, construct churches, distribute books, dispatch missionaries to the antipodes. They establish hospitals, prisons, schools by the same method. Finally, if they wish to highlight a truth or develop an opinion by the encouragement of a great example, they form an association." Alexis de Tocqueville 1840, 596.

Once the people imagined that it was moral to take away from one neighbor to provide for individual members of society including themselves, they became blind to the process of their own enslavement.

  • "The American Republic will endure until the day Congress discovers that it can bribe the public with the public's money." Alexis de Tocqueville

Americans have sold their right to manage their own affairs for the right to take from their neighbor through government force. If Americans are going to see again and return to liberty they must see their own folly and sin and thus return the responsibility of choice and the repercussion of bad choices back to the people.

Do we demand our liberty back before we are willing to take back the responsibilities of society that Tocqueville saw making America great? We must take back our responsibilities first and have a right to do so in what Tocqueville called free association.

  • "In the United States, as soon as several inhabitants have taken an opinion or an idea they wish to promote in society, they seek each other out and unite together once they have made contact. From that moment, they are no longer isolated but have become a power seen from afar whose activities serve as an example and whose words are heeded" Alexis de Tocqueville 1840, 599.

He did not see the people looking to government. In truth, the best men of society did not seem to think it was a noble pursuit.

  • “I do not know if the people of the United States would vote for superior men if they ran for office, but there can be no doubt that such men do not run.”  Alexis de Tocqueville, Democracy in America

Those who do seek the office of modern government must keep close to their hearts an understanding of the forces that both may build and destroy society. Those forces rest first in the hearts of men and not in the seat of government.

To make our political goal the alleviation of the burdens of bad government from the people is like trying to produce a hangover free alcohol or withdrawal free heroin. To remove the pain of bad government may be counterproductive to awakening the people or weaning them from their addiction to socialism.

  • “It is indeed difficult to imagine how men who have entirely renounced the habit of managing their own affairs could be successful in choosing those who ought to lead them. It is impossible to believe that a liberal, energetic, and wise government can ever emerge from the ballots of a nation of servants.” Alexis de Tocqueville

But it also may be counterproductive to do nothing for that would certainly not set a good example of mercy. The man lying in a ditch of self-inflicted addiction may still need a hand up but not without applying the necessary incentive for a more moral behavior in the future any act of mercy may be void of mercy. So the question remains the same, how do you help the poor or those deprived of rights to choose without weakening them?

If do not give back the full responsibly correlative to rights at the same time you give back the liberty of the people to choose for themselves then you may be held responsible for their choices.  Can we in good conscience give a loaded gun to a small child or your car keys to a drunk?

There is no solution to return to a state of liberty without first returning to a state of morality and responsibility. Ultimately those who want their rights back must be allowed to suffer the consequence of their abuse of liberty if they are going to enjoy liberty.

That is Natural Law.

Wantonness, lasciviousness and selfishness all denote a self-indulgent and covetous life where people are willing to bite one another to obtain benefits at the expense of their neighbor. Polybius, Plutarch and the prophets of the Bible warned that such covetous practices would lead to tribute, taxation, and tyranny of the Cains, Nimrods, Pharaohs, and Caesars of the world.
Until the people are willing to Repent of their willingness to gain at the expense of others and admit their sin of sloth and avarice they will not be free.[5]
The followers of Christ were united in a network of love and fervent charity providing relief for Christian communities all over the world with emergency aid without applying to the rulers who exercise authority one over the other as Christ commanded.

Wantonness, Lasciviousness and Selfishness

Mark 7:22 "Thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness <aselgeia>, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness:"

The word lasciviousness is the same word we see in the Bible for wantonness. These words are translated from the Greek word aselgeia ἀσέλγεια pronounced as-elg’-i-a and given the Strong's number 766.[6]

Aselgeia is a feminine noun from a compound formed by the negative particle "a" and a presumed Greek word selges which apparently means continent.

It is translated lasciviousness six times and wantonness twice but also filthy once and is said to mean 1) unbridled lust, excess, licentiousness, lasciviousness, wantonness, outrageousness, shamelessness, insolence.

If we were to seek synonyms for aselgeia we could look at asotia ἀσωτία pronounced as-o-tee’-ah given the Strong's number 810. It is also from a Greek compound of the same negative particle and a presumed derivative of sozo meaning to save, keep safe and sound,[7].

The word asotia translated riot twice but also excess and defined an abandoned, dissolute life or profligacy meaning wildly extravagant, prodigality meaning carelessly and foolishly spending money, time, etc..

The fundamental idea of asotia ἀσωτία is "wastefulness and riotous excess" and aselgeia ἀσέλγεια "lawless insolence and wanton caprice" or asotia ἀσωτία meaning reckless and extravagant expenditure, chiefly for the gratification of one’s desires.

All seem to denote the opposite of love and charity to others. Their common meaning denotes a selfish and self-indulgent course of life but the fundamental thought is the acknowledging of lack of restraints or reckless squandering of resources in careless or foolish consumption and waste.

The Greek word sozo σώζω appears over a hundred times in the Bible in reference to being saved by our Lord. The words that mean the opposite would describe the works that are the very antithesis of salvation.

Ears to Hear

This verse Mark 7:22 is found in the context of the Gospel and the doctrines of Christ as a part of a warning starting with Mark 7:16:

"If any man have ears to hear, let him hear. 17 And when he was entered into the house from the people, his disciples asked him concerning the parable. 18 And he saith unto them, Are ye so without understanding also? Do ye not perceive, that whatsoever thing from without entereth into the man, it cannot defile him; 19 Because it entereth not into his heart, but into the belly, and goeth out into the draught, purging all meats? 20 And he said, That which cometh out of the man, that defileth the man. 21 For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders, 22 Thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness: 23 All these evil things come from within, and defile the man.

Here we see both lasciviousness and wantonness listed with adultery and fornication but also stealing and coveting with wickedness. Just being proud is listed with being foolish and evidently is also listed with blasphemy.

If we do not rush to label these attributes as sins but evidence of the spirit that dwelleth in our beings or leads our hearts as a people we may get greater insight into the truth or lie of our salvation. We clearly are not saved if these traits come forth in our actions and what we do in our life.[8]

Careless Deceivers

The coveting Wantonness of Welfare through socialism and the Roots of the Welfare State.


Understanding the meaning and association of lasciviousness and wantonness can bring an awakening. Their presence in the heart will bring results and evidence there is no room for Christ.

The Pharisees put on a good show with their keeping of days and feasts and their long prayers but still managed with their Corban to devour widows' homes. [9].

We find the product of the failed heart in the extravagant rich man who spends his wealth on himself rather than using it to strengthen his brothers or the poor man who is reckless and careless with his meager resources eventually becoming a burden on his neighbor.

Jesus was not a socialist but the Romans and Pharisees with their free Bread and circuses were Socialist. There has always been two types of welfare in the world. They always require sacrifice on the part of the people for the assumed benefit of some. One was based on charity and the other on force. One made the word of God to effect in the heart of the people and the other made it to none effect. They were called Corban.

We also see the word deceit mentioned. The word does not mean an outright lie but is defined as the action or practice of deceiving someone by concealing or misrepresenting the truth. Both a lie and deceit are evidence of the presence of the same spirit or just the absence of the character or name of Christ. Those who are reckless or careless with the truth are not honest.

This is why we see the word honestly in describing what our walk must be in Romans 13:13

"Let us walk honestly, as in the day; not in rioting and drunkenness, not in chambering and wantonness <aselgeia>, not in strife and envying."

The warning in 2 Corinthians 12:21[10] by Paul is telling people that if they walk in these characteristics then we have not really repented and therefore have not been baptized in the name of Christ. We are actually deceivers of ourselves and others.

That is good news because we can now repent and be changed.

Before this in 2 Corinthians 12:20[11] Paul the Apostle lists the works that give us evidence that we are not saved and have need of repentance. Among them are actions that bring divisions like debates, envy, wrath, strife, backbiting, whisperings and something called swellings which seem much like pride.

In Galatians 5:19[12] we see the same word listed again with adultery and fornication and adding to that list many more characteristics in subsequent verses[13] which give evidence that we are not really saved and still have much more need of repentance.

The list includes Idolatry and witchcraft with hatred and envy and murder with drunkenness and explains that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.

The right to take

To demand that others provide for you is a wanton act of greed and covetousness. To desire and certainly to demand that Benefactors who exercise authority one over the other to provide those desired benefits at the expense of your neighbor and your neighbors' children is an act of violence upon the righteousness of love and your neighbor.

This wanton desire to benefit at the expense of another is anti-Christ. By its nature it is a manifestation of the ways of Hell through the heart of demons who reside there. Those who indulge in the schemes to enrich themselves at the expense of others shall not inherit the kingdom of God.

Paul the Apostle also gives a brief descriptive list of what to expect from those who are being born again and demonstrating true fruits of the Spirit such as love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, along with Meekness and temperance.

To create systems of Corban that use force so that we no longer have to make the sacrifices of a welfare system that depends on charity makes the word of God to non-effect.

Pride will keep society from seeing that their heart has turned from God and False religion will delude the people to accept a lie. Again the word is used in Ephesians 4:19 "Who being past feeling have given themselves over unto lasciviousness <aselgeia>, to work all uncleanness with greediness." to testify that we should not act like other nations according to what we read in Ephesians 4:17.[14]

The Right to Give

In the following verse 18[15] we see they do not understand not because they did not study but because of their hearts which are blind.

The word of God and the way of God has always depended upon freewill offerings. His society and His Church was a giving and forgiving institution. Charity was essential.

1 Corinthians 13:2 "And though I have [the gift of] prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing."

The way of Christ is charity and love. Greed is the opposite and takes you in the opposite direction. This is why we have need of repentance, turning around.


The word greediness which we saw in verse 19 is actually the word for covetousness which is associated with our becoming merchandise again and even cursing our children through Covetous Practices.

Peter uses this word several times:

1 Peter 4:3 For the time past of our life may suffice us to have wrought the will of the Gentiles, when we walked in lasciviousness <aselgeia>, lusts, excess of wine, revellings, banquetings, and abominable idolatries:
2 Peter 2:7 And delivered just Lot, vexed with the filthy <aselgeia> conversation of the wicked:

The Lust

But one of Peter's clearest and greatest warnings tells Christians that because of their wantonness and Covetous Practices [16] and straying from the real ways of Christ and instead Modern Christians "loved the wages of unrighteousness"[17]they would bear no fruit, be easily drawn away into deception and eventually be condemned to darkness.[18]

2 Peter 2:18 For when they speak great swelling words of vanity, they allure through the lusts of the flesh, through much wantonness <aselgeia>, those that were clean escaped from them who live in error.

Here Peter even describes how Christians would be self-deceived for they too will become blind like the other nations. By vain promises they would appeal to your vanity and sloth, offering you liberty from your responsibilities enticing a once free people with the benefits of Nimrod and of the World. The word lust here is epithumia[19]which is also translated concupiscence and desire. It is from epithumeo[20] which is more commonly translated desire or covet.

What belongs to other people we are forbidden to want or desire by the commandment to not covet. To keep that commandment alone destroys the argument for socialism and communism.

Christ saved us from the "World" telling us to live in it but not of it. But because of our wanton covetousness we were told that we would again be entangled in the yoke of bondage and the elements of the World.[21]

We are even told that it will be worse than Babylon, Egypt and Caesar's Judea,[22]

So we know many will think they are Christians but are not and will be cast away because they are workers of iniquity. This will be because the idea that welfare and Corban by force rather than charity is acceptable to God. It never has been.

This idea has crept into the Church and the minds of the people. A hundred years ago charity and welfare were the job of the Church and the community not a central government. Now Welfare by force and the free bread of Caesar is so common that people deny that we could supply it without force.

Jude 1:4 For there are certain men crept in unawares, who were before of old ordained to this condemnation, ungodly men, turning the grace of our God into lasciviousness <aselgeia>, and denying the only Lord God, and our Lord Jesus Christ.

If we are to be Christian we must gather to attend to the Weightier matters of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith which include caring for the needs of our neighbors and the widows and orphans of our society through Pure Religion in matters of health, education, and welfare. We are NOT to provide for the needy of society through the Covetous Practices and the men who call themselves benefactors but who exercise authority one over the other like the socialists do.

The Way of Christ was like neither the way of the world of Rome nor the governments of the gentiles who depend on those fathers of the earth through force, fear and fealty who deliver the people back in bondage again like they were in Egypt. Christ's ministers and true Christians do not depend upon systems of social welfare that force the contributions of the people like the corban of the Pharisees which made the word of God to none effect. Many people have been deceived to go the way of Balaam and the Nicolaitan and out of The Way of Christ and have become workers of iniquity.

The Christian conflict with Rome in the first century Church appointed by Christ was because they would not apply to the fathers of the earth for their free bread but instead relied upon a voluntary network providing a daily ministration to the needy of society through Faith, Hope, and Charity by way of freewill offerings of the people, for the people, and by the people through the perfect law of liberty in Free Assemblies according to the ancient pattern of Tuns or Tens as He commanded.

The modern Christians are in need of repentance.
