Spirit and Law
There is a fundamental debate about the question in the modern interpretation of the gospel, "Are we to follow the Spirit or the Law?"[1]
There are dozen of quotes about the law and the spirit to help us answers this question.
A common teaching in the Modern Christians is that all you have to do is be baptized[2] and believe and you are saved because the Ten Commandments are done away with in the New Covenant.
We know there is a verse in Colossians 2:14 "Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross;"
Paul is not talking about the Ten Commandments as the hand written ordinances, because God wrote them and because they would not be contrary to us.
Romans 7:6 "But now we are delivered from the law, that being dead wherein we were held; that we should serve in newness of spirit, and not [in] the oldness of the letter."
In response to an individual breaching the topic, "Are we subject to the law or the spirit?" I questioned their premise and the way they came to their conclusion based on their interpretation of Paul's words about the law and the spirit.
Paul was clear but many do not understand Paul because they are not following the true Holy Spirit, but are deceived to the point where they "believe a lie".[3]
I also shared detailed explanations quoting the scriptures and history at the time of Christ during, the writing of the biblical scriptures, and the practices of the early Church. We also have articles explaining the Christian conflict with the Corban of Rome and the Pharisees that led to the persecution.
There was a reference that "They (The Pharisees) followed and defined the law to a point where the law was the way to be holy." To some degree this view is correct but certainly not complete. The Pharisees did not know Moses, were hypocrites, put heavy burdens on the people but not on themselves.[4]
Jesus said they did not. And even made God's word to none effect, all while saying they are following Moses, just like modern Christians say they are following the "spirit".
Then you say:
"therefore we should assemble on the lords day whenever possible," Jesus didn't say that.
But what did Jesus say? https://preparingyou.com/wiki/Jesus_said
It is arrogance and foolishness to think that the Church established by Jesus Christ has led people back into the bondage of Egypt when Jesus came to set the captive free. The whole world is in a worse bondage. Than that of the bondage of Egypt where you only owed 20% of your labor. All the prophets predicted it and warned against it incl Paul and Peter Galatians 5:1 "Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage." But the people who go to modern Churches have clearly not stood fast in that liberty of the Early Church but have followed the ways preached by blind guides and have become merchandise, human resources, and their children are cursed with the debt of their parents wantonness, sloth, and debt.
You should go to the lake or Church as the Holy Spirit leads you. But it is not the Holy Spirit if it leads you to idolatry and bondage.
Paul says, Galatians 5:18 "But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law. 19 Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, 20 Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, 21 Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God. 22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, 23 Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law. 24 And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts."
What is idolatry? Paul tells you that too.
Colossians 3:5 "Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry: 6 For which things' sake the wrath of God cometh on the children of disobedience: "
1 Corinthians 10:14 Wherefore, my dearly beloved, flee from idolatry.
Legal Charity through Caesar or any government that exercise authority one over the other was forbidden by Jesus and neither His Holy Church nor His Holy Spirit will tell you it is moral nor righteous to seek the dainties and benefits of such Benefactors of the welfare State.
If your Church is not striving to be and provide a social welfare through true charity then it probably has little to do with Christ and is likely not Holy. It has been our dependence on legal charity which is a covetous practice and isolated which has returned US citizens to that yoke bondage which the way of Moses delivered the early Israelites from and Jesus by His way of righteousness delivered the people from. The way of the Corban of Rome, Herod, and the Pharisees was turning the people into human resources again and the called out of Christ and His followers who repented their dependence on the tables of Caesar. https://preparingyou.com/wiki/Legal_charity
Spirit
The modern definition it is said that spirit' includes:
- "the nonphysical part of a person that is the seat of emotions and character; the soul."
- "those qualities regarded as forming the definitive or typical elements in the character of a person, nation, or group or in the thought and attitudes of a particular period."
The word Spirit appears many times in the Bible. In Hebrew we see the word ruwach[6] which is also translated wind, breath, side, mind, blast, vain, air, and anger, cool, courage, etc.
Breath comes out of your mouth as you speak and manifests that spirit that dwells within in words.
In Genesis 1[7] we are told that "the earth was without form, and void" and it was "the Spirit of God" that "moved upon the face of the waters".
This breath of God also was apart of the formation of man as a living soul with a spirit of his own.[8]
Jesus would also breath on the Apostles so that they could receive that same Spirit of God or what is called the Holy Spirit.[9]
It is this same Spirit of God that is the source of revelation about the Law of Nature and the Will of God and make us anew man.[10]
Different spirits
In the Greek of the New Testament we see the word pneuma[11] translated Spirit or Ghost as in the phrase the Holy Ghost. It can refer to the Spirit of God, Spirit of truth[12], or a human spirit, or even an evil spirit.
Being born again is being born of the Spirit and not just of the flesh.[5] We as creatures of flesh cannot conjure up that Spirit with words and rituals but it is independent of what we do or say.[13]
While our words clearly cannot save us and Jesus emphasizes our doing the will of the Father in Heaven and forgiveness is clearly a part of opening our hearts to His redemption.
If we say we believe in the Lord and do what He says to do and not do what He condemns then our spirit, our breath, our character is one with His Holy Spirit.
If you are truly seeking the Kingdom of God then what you say and do should be conforming to the righteousness of God. If we keep the commandments of God the Father then our spirit is set apart, or said to be holy, our character or nature is upright, virtuous and honorable.
We are walking in the name of the Messiah, the Holy Spirit of Christ, or The Way of Jesus, etc. is walking in the righteousness of truth. The Truth and the Spirit of God are one.[14]
But there are other spirits that may deceive.
"You are possessed of an instinct—a spirit—that orients you toward the highest good. It calls your soul away from hell and toward heaven. And because it is there, you find yourself frequently disillusioned. People disappoint you. You betray yourself; you lose a meaningful connection to your workplace, boss, or partner. You think, “The world is not set right. It is deeply troubling to me.” That very disenchantment, however, can serve as the indicator of destiny. It speaks of abdicated responsibility—of things left undone, of things that still need to be done. You are irritated about that need. You are annoyed with the government, you are embittered and resentful about your job, you are unhappy with your parents, and you are frustrated with all these people around you who will not take on responsibility. There are, after all, things that are crying out to be accomplished. You are outraged that what needs to be done is not being done. That anger—that outrage—is, however, a doorway. That observation of abdicated responsibility is the indication of destiny and meaning. The part of you that is oriented toward the highest good is pointing out the disjunction between the ideal you can imagine—the ideal that is possessing you—and the reality you are experiencing. There is a gap there, and it is communicating its need to be filled. You can give way to fury, in consequence, and blame it on someone else—and it is not as if other people are not contributing to the problems. Or you can come to understand that your very disappointment is an indication to you from the most fundamental levels of your being that there is something wrong that needs to be set right—and, perhaps, by you. What is it, that concern, that care, that irritation, that distraction? It is not the call to happiness. It is the call to the action and adventure that make up a real life. Jordan B. Peterson, Beyond Order: 12 More Rules For Life
By the fruits you will know them.
Truth
In the modern definition of the truth we see: Truth is the property of being in accord with fact or reality. In everyday language, truth is typically ascribed to things that aim to represent reality or otherwise correspond to it, such as beliefs, propositions, and declarative sentences. Truth is usually held to be the opposite of falsehood.
The ethics within the mind of mankind have been expressed through numerous perspectives. From Plato to Kant, or Nietzsche to Buddha, or even Confucius to Averroes[15], and Moses to Jesus there has been the questions of what is truth.
Plato once said, “You should not honor men more than truth.” This is because truth is not subject to the opinions of men.
We all may have an opinion about what the truth is or is not. But there is no such thing as "your truth" but only your opinion about what the truth may or may not be.
As truth may only be in "accord with fact or reality"
Hiding from this truth has been a common practice from the beginning of time.
- "And they heard the voice of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day: and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God amongst the trees of the garden." Genesis 3:8
Your personal quest to seek the truth requires that you love the whole truth includig the truth about yourself and act upon that truth.
- "For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved. 21 But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God." John 3:20
Spirit and Truth
John 4 tells us that God is Spirit but we also know that he is the truth.[12] If we actually worship God we must do so in Spirit and in truth.[16]
We know that the fruit of the spirit is righteousness and truth[17] with out delusion. If we are truly Born again we will love the light that clears away the darkness of those delusions which often plague mankind.
There can be no redemption without that spirit of God through Christ entering into our hearts and minds.[18]
The Spirit and power of God only comes with a confession of the truth about our own transgression.[19]
The Spirit of a man of God should always bear witness to that truth because that "Spirit is truth". If it does not then there is need of repentance.
Conversing about truth
Ben Shapiro, "Critically evaluating one's beliefs is imperative for one's faith to deepen and grow. However, deconstruction in a philosophical sense a la Derrida and Foucault is bunk. It's rooted in the notion that all truth is subjective and, therefore, up to endless interpretation."
"All opinions are subjective but truth is not. That is what makes it truth."
Julia asked "How do you know truth without actual proof? Also is the proof real or was it planted? Who really knows for sure?"
All the things we call "proof" are dependent upon our senses through which we may evaluate a conclusion. That conclusion is still an opinion based on our sensory perception, evaluation, and reason, ergo it is subjective. So, there is no way to know if your proof is true. There is always some element of faith present in our personal search for truth. Still truth is part of an objective reality.
I may have an opinion about reality and you may have an opinion about reality but Only God's opinion "is" reality.
This is why what ever God may be He is identified as the "I am".
It has been said "Cogito, ergo sum" which is Latin: meaning “I think, therefore I am." I am sharing that from René Descartes' Discourse on Metho published in 1637.
Bible and truth

John 15:26 But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me:
John 17:17 Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth. 18 As thou hast sent me into the world, even so have I also sent them into the world. 19 And for their sakes I sanctify myself, that they also might be sanctified through the truth.
John 18:37 Pilate therefore said unto him, Art thou a king then? Jesus answered, Thou sayest that I am a king. To this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth. Every one that is of the truth heareth my voice. 38 Pilate saith unto him, What is truth? And when he had said this, he went out again unto the Jews, and saith unto them, I find in him no fault at all.
- My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth. 19 And hereby we know that we are of the truth, and shall assure our hearts before him." 1 John 3:18

Footnotes
- ↑ Law is spiritual
- Zechariah 7:12 "Yea, they made their hearts [as] an adamant stone, lest they should hear the law, and the words which the LORD of hosts hath sent in his spirit by the former prophets: therefore came a great wrath from the LORD of hosts."
- Luke 2:27 "And he came by the Spirit into the temple: and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him after the custom of the law,"
- Romans 7:6 "But now we are delivered from the law, that being dead wherein we were held; that we should serve in newness of spirit, and not [in] the oldness of the letter."
- Romans 7:14 "For we know that the law is spiritual: but I am carnal, sold under sin.
- Romans 8:2 "For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death. 3 For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh: 4 "That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit."'
- Galatians 3:2 "This only would I learn of you, Received ye the Spirit by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith? 3 Are ye so foolish? having begun in the Spirit, are ye now made perfect by the flesh? 4 Have ye suffered so many things in vain? if [it be] yet in vain. 5 He therefore that ministereth to you the Spirit, and worketh miracles among you, [doeth he it] by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith?"'
- Galatians 5:18 "But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law."
- ↑ Just because some ones dunks you in water and says words does not mean you have received the baptism of Christ, nor are you saved.
"Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind, 10 Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God."
Anyone still coveting their neighbor's goods, labor, or property through men of governments who "exercise authority" one over the other and desire their dainties and benefits do not truly believe in Jesus nor His doctrine. http://preparingyou.com/wiki/Not_inherit_the_kingdom - ↑ Why we Believe a lie
- 2 Thessalonians 2:11 "And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie:"
- Psalms 81:11 "But my people would not hearken to my voice; and Israel would none of me. 12 So I gave them up unto their own hearts’ lust: [and] they walked in their own counsels."
- Psalms 109:17 "As he loved cursing, so let it come unto him: as he delighted not in blessing, so let it be far from him."
- Isaiah 29:9 "Stay yourselves, and wonder; cry ye out, and cry: they are drunken, but not with wine; they stagger, but not with strong drink. 10 For the LORD hath poured out upon you the spirit of deep sleep, and hath closed your eyes: the prophets and your rulers, the seers hath he covered. 11 And the vision of all is become unto you as the words of a book that is sealed, which [men] deliver to one that is learned, saying, Read this, I pray thee: and he saith, I cannot; for it [is] sealed: 12 And the book is delivered to him that is not learned, saying, Read this, I pray thee: and he saith, I am not learned. 13 Wherefore the Lord said, Forasmuch as this people draw near [me] with their mouth, and with their lips do honour me, but have removed their heart far from me, and their fear toward me is taught by the precept of men: 14 Therefore, behold, I will proceed to do a marvellous work among this people, [even] a marvellous work and a wonder: for the wisdom of their wise [men] shall perish, and the understanding of their prudent [men] shall be hid.
- John 12:39 "Therefore they could not believe, because that Esaias said again, 40 He hath blinded their eyes, and hardened their heart; that they should not see with [their] eyes, nor understand with [their] heart, and be converted, and I should heal them. 41 These things said Esaias, when he saw his glory, and spake of him. 42 ¶ Nevertheless among the chief rulers also many believed on him; but because of the Pharisees they did not confess [him], lest they should be put out of the synagogue: 43 For they loved the praise of men more than the praise of God."
- Romans 1:21 Because that, when they knew God, they glorified [him] not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened. 22 Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools, 23 And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things. 24 Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves: 25 Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen."
- Romans 1:26 "For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature: 27 And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet. 28 And even as they did not like to retain God in [their] knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient; 29 Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers, 30 Backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents, 31 Without understanding, covenantbreakers, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful: 32 Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them."
