Elohiym
“And Joseph said unto them, Fear not: for [am] I in the place of God?” (Genesis 50:19)
Here in Genesis, Joseph asks if he is in the place of God or a god?
He had the power of judgment, but left that judgment to God the Father and forgave his brothers.
In the Old Testament, the words “gods” and “God” are both translated from the single Hebrew word elohiym,[1] defined as “rulers, judges” and “applied as deference to magistrates” according to the Strong's Concordance.
whether in heaven or in earth,
(as there be gods many, and lords many,)"
1 Corinthians 8:5
There are many who may call themselves gods or elohiym but the question is who is your god and how did they get to be your god or gods?
But now, after that ye have known God, or rather are known of God,
how turn ye again to the weak and beggarly elements, whereunto ye desire again to be in bondage?"
Galatians 4:8
And do you serve those gods who by nature should not be your gods?
The word theos in the Greek was translated god but was also a term commonly used to address judges in courts of law. The Hebrew words el[2] and elohim[1] are found in the Dead Sea scrolls and how they are meant to be used.
The Bible talks about "Gods many" and Jesus say ye also are gods.[3]
A god is simply a ruling judge and each of us as men may rule over something and may be ruled over by others. But the God of Creation rules over all that dwells in His creation by His Law of Nature from which there is no escape.
He is Infinite we are finite.[4]
If you deny the singularity of that God of Creation, that Unmoved Mover, that God of gods you will become polytheistic with gods many, with hierarchies of authority, with mystery Babylon where the people become tyrants or merchandise and their children cursed.
Elohiym as judges
"Elohiym"[1] is even translated "judges".
In Exodus 21:
“..if the servant shall plainly say, I love my master” and choose to serve him, “then his master will bring him unto the judges”. We also see in Exodus 22 that Moses uses it when he is talking about men judging matters of guilt and innocence in cases of robbery of personal property.[5]
Even in 1 Samuel 2:25 we see the word "elohiym"[1] translated judge when speaking about men judging other men.
“If one man sin against another, the judge shall judge him: but if a man sin against the LORD, who shall entreat for him? Notwithstanding they hearkened not unto the voice of their father, because the LORD would slay them.” 1 Samuel 2:25
The word was used by the Israelites to refer to men amongst their own people, men that had the right to judge certain matters of guilt and innocence.== Other gods ==
Were other men called gods?
Joshua gives a choice in chapter 24 verse 15:
"And if it seem evil unto you to serve the LORD, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that [were] on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD. And the people answered and said, ‘God forbid that we should forsake the LORD, to serve other gods."
What are or who are those gods? No one serves stone. Stone statues were just the symbol of men who were the ruling judges of other men. Men who exercise authority over the service of others, making rules.
Exodus 22:28 tells us that:
“Thou shalt not revile the gods, nor curse the ruler of thy people.”
The terms "gods", "Elohiym"[1] and "rulers" or more commonly "princes" are coupled together because when people were not talking about the God of creation they were usually talking about men who represented the position of God in a more temporal setting or institution.
We see the same idea in Ecclesiastes 10:20 "Curse not the king, no not in thy thought; and curse not the rich in thy bedchamber: for a bird of the air shall carry the voice, and that which hath wings shall tell the matter." or Jesus when he warned in Luke 12:3 " Therefore whatsoever ye have spoken in darkness shall be heard in the light; and that which ye have spoken in the ear in closets shall be proclaimed upon the housetops."
