In Egypt under the Pharaoh 20% of your labor belonged to the government of Pharaoh as if you were employed and they called it the Bondage of Egypt.
Was it legal?
They went into bondage because they would not hear the anguish cries of their brother.[1]
When did it become oppression?
Were the taskmasters actually a form of slave masters in a corvee system?
Are the people today back in the bondage of Egypt?
All over the world today people pay much more of their labor to the government and call it freedom.
Because the people had an appetite for benefits from men who call themselves Benefactors we have returned to bondage. We were told to 'never return to the bondage of Egypt but people did under Herod and Rome, and in the United States under FDR and LBJ and for more than a century. It was also called a corvee system of statutory labor or the bondage of Egypt. Jesus told us to think a different way and to seek the Kingdom of God and His righteousness. Are we in need of learning the lessons of Exodus?
This was because the corban of the Pharisees and Herod made the word of God to none effect because as covetous practices it mad men merchandise instead of setting the captive free.

What is oppression

Oppression is defined as a "prolonged cruel or unjust treatment or control."

The Bible uses the word oppress over a hundred times but it is translated from numerous different Hebrew words that are not always translated as oppress or oppression.

This long list of Hebrew words include lachats as a verb[2] and as a noun[3], yanah[4], tsarar, ‘ashaq[5], nagas[6], ‘ariyts[7], ratsats[8], ‘ashuwq[9], and shod[10]. All of these word have other meanings. [11]

The word lachats means oppression in the sense of affliction while yanah that can mean oppress is also translated proud and can man both thrust out or bound, tsarar can also mean to bind and is often translated enemy and the primitive root ‘ashaq can also mean oppress but also defraud.

The term nagas[6] can be an oppressor, taskmasters, exactors, and even tax collector. The term ‘ariyts is translated terrible 8, terrible one, oppressor but also mighty and strong.

Can we call justified action oppression?

Can we call taxation theft?

Much of what is called oppression today may be nothing more than justice.

God heard the cries of the people because the Egyptians oppressed them in excess of what was just. The Israelite people were in the Bondage of Egypt and owed tribute to the Pharaoh in the form of a Corvee service. If the Pharaoh exceeded what was "just, right and fair" through ambuscade, crafts of state or corruption that was called oppression.

That bondage in the beginning was just because Joseph's brothers sold him into bondage and so it was only right for them to go into bondage, too. As we judge to do to other becomes just if it is done by other to us.

That bondage of Egypt was simple and consisted of at least two elements.

The first, is they might have livestock and land but they did not own them to the exclusion of all else. They shared ownership in a sort of legal title. They had an "apparent title" but the pharaoh actually held what could be called the "equitable title" today but “carries no beneficial interest.”

Another element to their bondage is that the people did not own an exclusive right to their labor either.

While the people still owned at least 4/5ths of their labor, at least 1/5 or 20% belonged to the pharaoh. We were told by God that we wee never to return to this type of relationship again.[12]

The Bible tells us to never return to the bondage of Egypt and even tells us to write in our constitutions that who ever we choose to exercise authority does nothing to return us to the bondage of Egypt where a portion of our labor belongs to the government and the title to the things we own is held in One purse.

If you have some one who you see as an oppressor you may imagine that you do not have to take responsibility for your actions, inaction or mistakes. If people don't have an oppressor there are people who will help you invent one.

If we bite one another through covetous practices and men who call themselves benefactors but exercise authority we should expect to be devoured, made merchandise, and curse children.

Deuteronomy 7 The word oppress is often lachats[2] meaning to squeeze as we see in Exodus.[13]
But in other verses warning about oppressing the stranger[14] we see the Hebrew word ashaq[5]
Wisemen and Fools
"Oppression maketh a wise man mad; and a gift destroyeth the heart." until angry men become perfect savages and everyman a tyrant.
Why are things not as good as they were?
If we "enquire wisely concerning this".
The answer is the corrupting power of the Saul Syndrome when the "foolish" choose to oppress their neighbor through the covetous practices of legal charity.
They have no patience for the fervent charity of "The Way" of righteousness.
But men choose to "Bite one another" with an appetite for the dainties and benefits of rulers who exercise authority until they are all devoured like "merchandise".

Job was not oppressed. He was tested.

We are tested too, daily.

Many places in the world have experienced oppression. Americans do not know true oppression. They do know sloth, apathy, avarice, and wantonness.

“It is when a people forget God that tyrants forge their chains.” ― Patrick Henry

We have been warned for thousands of years that the slothful would be under tribute. We were told not to "bite one another, less we be devoured."

We were told that through "covetous practices we would be made merchandise", human resources.

We were warned in 1 Samuel 8 that if chose men to rule over us they would "take and take and take and when we cried out God would would not hear us."

Despite all these warnings and prophetic advise we have become "accustomed to living at the expensive of others and have depended for their livelihood on the property of others and degenerated into perfect savages..."[15] all because they would not follow the true Christ but followed instead a strong delusion and desired the wages of unrighteousness.
