Amos was a shepherd.
Amos 1 Summary
Introduces Amos as a shepherd warning the people of repeated transgression are bringing about an effect. The places mentioned are poetic representations of spiritual vices and virtues(See comments verse 5). The people were returning to the captivity of Edom because they remembered not the brotherly covenant which reduced the fruitfulness of society.[1]

A herdsmen of Tekoa and appears with a Mem at the beginning as MemTavKufVavAyin מִתְּק֑וֹעַ [2] Tekoa can mean "a stockade" or protected place but also an instrument through which you blow.
Was Amos a shepherd of sheep or of the people who sounded the warning of God through the Holy Spirit and faith?
Carmel[3] is also mentioned by Micah 7:14 which is a reference to being fruitful[4] as we were commanded by God in the beginning. Carmel is associated with practices that reduces the fruitfulness of societies (Nahum 1:4, Joel 1:12,17, Amos 9:3). Even Jesus took the kingdom of God from the Pharisees because they and their system of Corban was not bearing fruit.[5]
The transgressions[6] of Damascus, the capital of Syria, is said to be three even four is likely used as an idiomatic phrase, signifying “multiplied or repeated delinquencies”.
The threshing instruments[7] of iron may simply be a metaphor meaning making the decision to use force and is that choice which brings destruction and captivity. There is welfare that is a snare which David and Paul and even Peter says makes the people merchandise. Polybius warns that an appetite for benefits and the instituting the rule of force degenerates the masses giving rise to tyrants which opens society to the Saul Syndrome and the ways of Sodom.
Is the fire sent a strange fire that brings the consequences for the transgressions? Is the fire also a consequence and the names symbols themselves poeticly telling us deeper meanings?
John the Baptist would not use force to provide social welfare but the Corban of Herod did which made the word of God to none effect.
Vers 5 "I will break[8] also the bar[9] of Damascus[10], and cut off the inhabitant from the plain of Aven[11], and him that holdeth the sceptre from the house of Eden[12]: and the people of Syria[13] shall go into captivity[14] unto Kir[15], saith the LORD."
V12 This fire sent on to Teman, which is a place east of Edon[16] devthes the palaces (high places)[17] of Bozrah which the people thought was a fortress.[18]
They "delivered up the whole captivity to Edom[19], and remembered not the brotherly covenant:"[20]
Is "enlarge their border" the same as lengthens the fringe of their garments?
This word for captivity commonly appears in Jeremiah and Ezekiel. Because Joseph was sold into bondage his brothers also went into bondage.
The idea of stripping people of their rights and their property so that "they have nothing" was the goal of the serpent who is the dragon.
God would punish those who do such evil but that is why evil wants us to do it to ourselves, remembering not the brotherly covenant.[21]
Proverbs 14:31 " oppresseth the poor reproacheth his Maker:" - Proverbs 17:5 "Whoso mocketh the poor reproacheth his Maker" - Galatians 6:10 "As we have therefore opportunity, let us do good unto all men, especially unto them who are of the household of faith."
"Freedom is the Right to Choose, the Right to create for oneself the alternatives of Choice. Without the possibility of Choice, and the exercise of Choice, a man is not a man but a member, an instrument, a thing.” Archibald MacLeish

Herdsmen of Tekoa

1 ¶ The words of Amos, who was among the herdmen of Tekoa, which he saw concerning Israel in the days of Uzziah king of Judah, and in the days of Jeroboam the son of Joash king of Israel, two years before the earthquake.

2 And he said, The LORD will roar from Zion, and utter his voice from Jerusalem; and the habitations of the shepherds shall mourn, and the top of Carmel shall wither.

3 Thus saith the LORD; For three transgressions of Damascus, and for four, I will not turn away the punishment thereof; because they have threshed Gilead with threshing instruments of iron:

Devouring fire

4 But I will send a fire into the house of Hazael, which shall devour the palaces[17] of Benhadad.

5 I will break also the bar of Damascus, and cut off the inhabitant from the plain of Aven, and him that holdeth the sceptre from the house of Eden: and the people of Syria shall go into captivity unto Kir, saith the LORD.

6 Thus saith the LORD; For three transgressions of Gaza, and for four, I will not turn away the punishment thereof; because they carried away captive[14] the whole captivity,[22] to deliver them up to Edom:

7 But I will send a fire on the wall of Gaza, which shall devour the palaces thereof:

8 And I will cut off the inhabitant from Ashdod, and him that holdeth the sceptre from Ashkelon, and I will turn mine hand against Ekron: and the remnant of the Philistines shall perish, saith the Lord GOD.

9 Thus saith the LORD; For three transgressions of Tyrus, and for four, I will not turn away the punishment thereof; because they delivered up the whole captivity[22] to Edom, and remembered not the brotherly covenant:

10 But I will send a fire on the wall of Tyrus, which shall devour the palaces thereof.

transgressions of Edom

11 Thus saith the LORD; For three transgressions of Edom, and for four, I will not turn away the punishment thereof; because he did pursue his brother with the sword, and did cast off all pity, and his anger did tear perpetually, and he kept his wrath for ever:

12 But I will send a fire upon Teman,[16] which shall devour the palaces[17] of Bozrah.[18]

13 Thus saith the LORD; For three transgressions of the children of Ammon, and for four, I will not turn away the punishment thereof; because they have ripped up the women with child of Gilead, that they might enlarge their border:

14 But I will kindle a fire in the wall of Rabbah, and it shall devour the palaces thereof, with shouting in the day of battle, with a tempest in the day of the whirlwind:

15 And their king shall go into captivity[23], he and his princes together, saith the LORD.

    • According to Obadiah 1 the Edomites were proud, violent, and apathetic to the destruction of Israel and Amos 1 tells of transgressions of Edom which leads to captivity because they remembered not the brotherly covenant.
  20. Some suggest that the "covenant of brethren " was the league made between Hiram and David, and afterwards between Hiram and Solomon (2 Samuel 5:11; 1 Kings 5:1; 1 Kings 5:12 )but the true brotherly covenant dates back when there was no king in Israel and the people were bound together by the practice of pure religion. Ezekiel 16:49 "Behold, this was the iniquity of thy sister Sodom, pride, fulness of bread, and abundance of idleness was in her and in her daughters, neither did she strengthen the hand of the poor and needy." This was an indictment of Israel because it failed to abide by Leviticus 25:35 "And if thy brother be waxen poor, and fallen in decay with thee; then thou shalt relieve him: [yea, though he be] a stranger, or a sojourner; that he may live with thee." when the people turned to the legal charity offered by men who exercise authority like Cain, Nimrod and FDR rather that the freewill offerings provided by the fervent charity of The Way.
  21. There are referrences to "Phœnicia’s mercantile cupidity, and Tyre was tempted to sell Hebrew captives to Greeks and Idumeans" But men have often been merchants of men and can make our brothers merchandise where we own nothing.
