Amos 4 Summary The whole body of watchmen for Israel fail to warn the people. God sends warnings to the people like those of Egypt and Sodom but they fail to return to his system of freewill offerings where there would be fruitfulness. |

What was the sin of Sodom? |
Matthew Henry's Concise Commentary 4:1-5 "What is got by extortion is commonly used to provide for the flesh, and to fulfil the lusts thereof. What is got by oppression cannot be enjoyed with satisfaction. How miserable are those whose confidence in unscriptural observances only prove that they believe a lie! Let us see to it that our faith, hope, and worship, are warranted by the Divine word." |
God calls the young heifer or kine[1] of Bashan[2] of Bashan, that are in the mountain of Samaria, which oppress the poor. What is written in Hosea 10:10-12 concerning a trained heifer?[3] Hosea warns of a need of repenting your wicked ways where you eat the reward of unrighteousness. [4] |
The Kine is a young heifer like the Red heifer represents aid to be given in a time of fruitfulness which is what Bashan is referring to like the affluence of Sodom. |
Like Sodom in a time of affluence they did not strengthen the poor. |
The "sacrifice of thanksgiving with leaven" was one that included cruelty and force. |
How does the heifer that is in the fruitfulness of the mountains of the watchman oppress the poor? Is it not the roots of the Welfare State that weakens the poor? |
Amos speaks of how the table was becoming a snare and a trap[5], as did Hosea[6] for they teach false religion. Your modern priests and the modern Church lead the people back into the bondage of Egypt with it's plague of servitude. |
If the people do not abstain from their appetite for what is offered by rulers who call themselves benefactors but exercise authority their idols become a snare.[7] Proverbs 22 through 23 repeat the warnings.[8] Such warnings are repeated throughout the Bible by the prophets, David, Paul, and Peter. |
These "hooks[9], and your posterity[10] with fishhooks[11]" in verse 2 includes the Mire that comes with that appetite for the wages of unrighteousness. Were these hooks a metaphor for the snare and trap laid for those greedy for gain at the expense of their neighbor? |
All the problems in society and Israel were because the people would not return to God. Certainly they thought they had but were immersed in False religion. |
Your modern Church ministers have failed to be your watchman despite the warnings of Christ concerning these snares.[12] |
Pray you be not found among the workers of iniquity? |

oppress the poor
1 Hear this word, ye kine[1] of Bashan[2], that are in the mountain of Samaria, which oppress the poor, which crush the needy, which say to their masters, Bring, and let us drink.
2 The Lord GOD hath sworn by his holiness, that, lo, the days shall come upon you, that he will take you away with hooks, and your posterity with fishhooks.
3 And ye shall go out at the breaches[13], every cow at that which is before her; and ye shall cast them into the palace, saith the LORD.
4 Come to Bethel[14], and transgress; at Gilgal[15] multiply transgression; and bring your sacrifices every morning, and your tithes after three years:
Sacrifice with leaven
5 And offer a sacrifice of thanksgiving with leaven, and proclaim and publish the free offerings: for this liketh you, O ye children of Israel, saith the Lord GOD.
Israel Has Not Returned to the Lord
6 And I also have given you cleanness of teeth in all your cities, and want of bread in all your places: yet have ye not returned unto me, saith the LORD.
7 And also I have withholden the rain from you, when there were yet three months to the harvest: and I caused it to rain upon one city, and caused it not to rain upon another city: one piece was rained upon, and the piece whereupon it rained not withered.
8 So two or three cities wandered unto one city, to drink water; but they were not satisfied: yet have ye not returned unto me, saith the LORD.
9 I have smitten you with blasting and mildew: when your gardens and your vineyards and your fig trees and your olive trees increased, the palmerworm[16] devoured them: yet have ye not returned unto me, saith the LORD.
10 I have sent among you the pestilence after the manner of Egypt: your young men have I slain with the sword, and have taken away your horses; and I have made the stink of your camps to come up unto your nostrils: yet have ye not returned unto me, saith the LORD.
11 I have overthrown some of you, as God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah, and ye were as a firebrand plucked out of the burning: yet have ye not returned unto me, saith the LORD.
12 Therefore thus will I do unto thee, O Israel: and because I will do this unto thee, prepare to meet thy God, O Israel.
13 For, lo, he that formeth the mountains, and createth the wind, and declareth unto man what is his thought, that maketh the morning darkness, and treadeth upon the high places of the earth, The LORD, The God of hosts, is his name.
