shelem [1] is translated peace offering over 80 times. The term korban shelamim (קורבן שלמים) is rendered "peace offering". A modern Jewish encyclopedia suggests that there are three kinds of peace-offering: (1) the thank-offering; (2) the votive-offering; and (3) the free-will offering. But M. M. Kalisch says that the shelamim were "safety-offerings." They were connected with the essential to a secure existence.[2]
