Rome had a long history in which the term liberty included the license to violate rights of some for the benefit of others. [[Polybius]] speaks eloquently of how the abuse of liberty and the rights of others through [[covetous practices]] altered the very nature of the people.

The definition of liberty

LIBERTY 

1. Freedom from restraint. The power of acting as one thinks fit, without any restraint or control, except from the laws of nature.

3. Civil liberty is the power to do whatever is permitted by the constitution of the state and the laws of the land. It is no other than natural liberty, so far restrained by human laws, and no further, operating equally upon all the citizens, as is necessary and expedient for the general advantage of the public. 1 Black. That system of laws is alone calculated to maintain civil liberty, which leaves the citizen entirely master of his own conduct, except in those points in which the public good requires some direction and restraint. When a man is restrained in his natural liberty by no municipal laws but those which are requisite to prevent his violating the natural law, and to promote the greatest moral and physical welfare of the community, he is legally possessed of the fullest enjoyment of his civil rights of individual liberty. It consists in the power of locomotion, of changing situation, or removing one's person to whatever place one's inclination may direct, without imprisonment or restraint, unless by due course of law. 1 Bl. 7. Political liberty may be defined to be, the security by which, from the constitution, form and nature of the established government, the citizens enjoy civil liberty. No ideas or definitions are more distinguishable than those of civil and political liberty, yet they are generally confounded. 1 Bl. Com. 6, 125. The political liberty of a state is based upon those fundamental laws which establish the distribution of legislative and executive powers. The political liberty of a citizen is that tranquillity of mind, which is the effect of an opinion that he is in perfect security; and to insure this security, the government must be such that one citizen shall not fear another.
8. In the English law, by liberty is meant a privilege held by grant or prescription, by which some men enjoy greater benefits than ordinary subjects. A liberty is also a territory, with some extraordinary privilege.
9. By liberty or liberties, is understood a part of a town or city, as the Northern Liberties of the city of Philadelphia. The same as Faubourg. (q. V.)

More modern definition sees liberty as simply "freedom from arbitrary or despotic government or control. freedom from external or foreign rule; independence. freedom from control, interference, obligation, restriction, hampering conditions, etc.; power or right of doing, thinking, speaking, etc., according to choice." Liberty is defined as freedom from captivity or control which includes the "ability to go where you want, do what you want and say what you want" with no "except from the laws of nature".

Over time liberty may mean different things to different people and therefore it may be abused beyond its original definition.


In History

The name Liberty originates from the Latin “libertas” utilizing the element “liber” meaning "free.” In English, the word means “liberty,” “free” or “independence.” In Roman mythology, Libertas was a Goddess who personified the concept of liberty.

Since God is the God of nature and therefore the Natural law Natural liberty was intended to reside within the province of the individual Personal liberty of mankind. God instituted very little and limited powers of government. Most of what we call government was not instituted by God but by men from Cain to Nimrod and Pharaoh to Caesar.

God through Moses because of the hardness of the hearts of the people did call out the Church in the wilderness and Jesus called out His little flock to be His Church in service of the people. The Church is legally defined as "one form of government" too. But it was not legislative and was given no power to restrict personal liberty through exercising authority one over the other which brings us back to the perfect law of liberty.

In Bouvier's Law Dictionary Political liberty allows the individual to contract away personal liberty where the people may "establish the distribution of legislative and executive powers". We see Israel doing that when the voice of the people elected Saul. In 1 Samuel 8 that was specified as a rejection of God and always leads to political abuse which takes and takes and takes the possessions of the people and destroys the family through covetous practices.

The political liberty of a citizen within the Kingdom of God rests entirely with the people if God is within them. It is truly a government of the people, for the people and by the people because "the distribution of legislative and executive powers" remains amongst all the individuals who gather in free assemblies in the sacred pattern of the Tens.

The Kingdom of God is not a democracy where 51% of the people can take away the rights of the other 49%. It is a government of individual responsibility which is the only form of government that can maintain personal liberty. That tranquillity of mind o the individual is a product of the Holy Spirit beyond any social construct of society. Only if Christ dwells in us as a peculiar people shall we dwell "in perfect security" where "one citizen shall not fear another".

Good and Bad Spirit of liberty

Nature calls men to gather together in agreement as a free society. But where and who writes the rules and rituals of that agreement? Unless righteousness is written on the hearts and minds of the people by God the people will write their own history of oppression of others and then for themselves. When people see what they perceive as oppression and abuse they may react.

What spirit is moving them to act?

Is it a love of righteousness[2] or a love of judgment [3]?

Is your desire for personal liberty for yourself equal to your desire for liberty for others?

Do you want liberty within the golden rule and the principles of the laws of nature?

Or is your desire for liberty a product of envy and avarice?

Are you seeking righteousness for all or self-justification for yourself?

I stumbled on an article entitled:

"Native Americans suffer twice as Bundy Gang acquitted and Standing Rock protestors attacked"

The spirit I saw in the article was a spirit that draws to it failure and abuse. You do not want that spirit when fighting evil in its many forms.

I posted a comment after reading it:

This article displays bigotry and prejudice and a lack of knowledge concerning the facts. You say "Bundy Gang" and "An eighth member of their gang was killed by police when the standoff drew to an end. "
"Gang"?
Why not call them protesters, activists, patriots or even the occupy movement? They are not "gang" members.

The "eighth member of their gang", as you call him, has a name.

: Robert LaVoy Finicum was actually an Native American Indian. Did you even know that? Do you know what tribes he was a blood member of? You do not even seem to know the real issues nor why the jury found them innocent of the charges or what is really behind these events.

Those men did not see Indian and white. They saw right and wrong, justice and injustice and worked together fighting for land and water rights that are being stolen not just from them but their neighbor. This article was divisive and unproductive and displayed prejudicial views. Followers of Christ do not divide people into white European, Native American peoples or gangs but are seeking the kingdom of God and His righteousness. I saw this same spirit of blame often accompanied by a spirit of victimization in other articles suggesting that if these people protesting government abuse of private property rights were black men they would have been murdered.

U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder- Now - 1970.

Just to give you some historical perspective, back in 1970 leaders of the Student Afro-American Society (SAAS), took over a Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) headquarters at Columbia University. The occupation was armed too and demanded that the former ROTC office be renamed the “Malcolm X Lounge.”

The Dean of Freshman, Henry Coleman's office also was occupied until demands were met. Evidently that included a black student by the name of Eric Holder who participated in the militant take over of the ROTC headquarters. He was not shot or even arrested and tried. He became known as the Attorney General of the United States. Was that called privilege?

People do not take the time to find out what is really going on in the world. They are not diligent in their quest for truth but are often quick to judge and blame others. It is not about race or religion, politics or party. It is about right and wrong, truth and something less than the whole truth. To find the truth and liberty under God people need to network together, not just because there is strength in numbers but because networking requires forgiveness.

If you want liberty under God there is only one tribe, the tribe of His righteousness. There is no more Indian and European, no more black and white, yellow or red.

The Hammonds are white and they are in jail for doing nothing. They were railroaded and are being robbed of hundreds of thousands of dollars for doing no damage. They are clearly being forced by the government to sell their land because someone else wants it. All this is being done to steal mineral and water rights like in the case of the Hage family too. But people are quick to choose sides and assume guilt without learning or even hearing the facts.

While many of these people are good people just like some of those protesting the pipe land, what are they often missing?

The article also said "The land we know as the United States of America once belonged, quite naturally, to the Native American peoples."

A true follower of Christ and believer in God knows why the Native Americans were so subject to abuse which is why Americans are also being abused today. There were good native Americans and bad, just as there were good and bad people who came here to live on this continent.

That original constitution of the native American Confederacy was unwritten. The ideas were represented by symbols beaded on strings of wampum. Supposedly Dekanawidah’s plan for his “Tree of Great Peace” was that Firekeepers were to watch the affairs of the Five Nations so that they may spread from “The Great White Roots and their nature” of “Peace and Strength”. But that nature of peace and strength may not have been in all the hearts of all the people of the Five Nations nor those later nations who became a part of that league.

Unless righteousness is written on the hearts and minds of the people by God the people will write their own history of oppression of others and then for themselves by their own unrighteousness.

Many of the powerful tribes of the confederation interpreted the original message of the “Tree of Great Peace” to mean something different and allow for a manifest destiny approach to the lessor tribes around them. As they oppressed the "die was cast" for their own oppression.

If you are not allowing God to cultivate your heart with forgiveness then you will not be suitable for the habitation of the righteous.

If you do not come together to serve one another in the Character of Christ then God will not hear you in your hour of need.

If you do not come to lay down your life in sacrifice for others like Christ then there is no repentance and no salvation.

Do not sew the wind of judgement for as you judge you shall be judged.

Stop blaming others for your own bondage.

Start coming together with the character of Christ to set others free rather than just free yourself.

Evil wants to keep you divided... the list of tools he uses to divide you is long.

Evil wants to keep you focused on your own needs and wantonness.

Evil wants you to be concerned about your own rights and freedom more than the rights and liberty of your own neighbors.

A Key to liberty is found in how you are coming together. Is it with a diligent forgiveness and communion of giving?

If you are coming together in the name of Christ it will not be just for or with those who love you but for all whom God wishes "might be saved".

"By this shall all [men] know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another." John 13:35

People followed Abraham, Moses, John the Baptist and Jesus. The altars of clay and stone was a way to create the social bonds of free people. The levites led the Israelites. And the early Church followed Christ and His Way, which was The Way, and advocated a Daily ministration that was dependent on Pure Religion through Fervent charity only. This was the Corban of Christ which was not like the system of Corban of the Pharisees nor of Rome or the systems of FDR and LBJ.
The church lost "the way" when it abandoned the practice of "pure Religion" while claiming to be the Church established by Christ. The people developed an appetite for the "wages of unrighteousness" from "public religion" in the days of Constantine. Those new Christians that often failed to fully repent degenerated the moral character of society with the masses of "instant christians".
That new religion of the emperor introduced a new faith with his apostate church replacing the doctrine of Jesus with the "doctrines of men", the Holy Spirit with emotion, the truth with the speaking of "great swelling words, having men's persons in admiration because of advantage."[4]
They had a form of godliness but denied the power thereof.

Where is your religion

  • Do you only gather for the comfort it gives you, or do you gather to benefit others?
  • Christ came to serve, not be served. Do you desire to be served, or are you coming in His name and according to His character to serve others?

If we desire His Grace but we only love those who love us, then there is no Grace because it is clear we do not really believe in Him.

If we do not Repent of our Covetous Practices and are not diligently gathering together in Free Assemblies of Love for all to provide for one another in Charity according to the Perfect law of liberty then we have nothing according to Paul. According to Luke 6:32 if we only love those who love us there is no "Grace". Christ also said if you do not Forgive neither will the Father forgive you.[5]

It is not enough to hate the deeds of the workers of iniquity, but we must return to Thy first love and thy first work. To break the yoke, we need to return to the ways of righteousness spoken of in Isaiah 58 which are the ways of Christ and the early Church. And His yoke is light for it is carried by our love of one another.

Abraham, Moses, John the Baptist and Christ all created Networks of charity to care for the true needy of society without force which is how they were able to help set people free. Do you gather with His Church to attend to the Weightier matters as Christ said?

  • Are you gathering in a Network of righteousness?
  • Do you come to love others or just be loved?

Early Christians found themselves in conflict with these systems of social welfare because they made the word of God to none effect. Christians had repented of their covetous nature when they received the Baptism of Christ. They heard and became Doers of the word not hearers only.

Remember Proverbs 12:24, "The hand of the diligent shall bear rule: but the Slothful shall be under Tribute."

We know that liberty under God is not for the covetous who are Biting one another but it is also not for the slothful. If we are not congregating together in free assemblies bound together in a broad network by faith, hope, and charity alone according to the perfect law of liberty then we are not truly seeking the Kingdom of God nor His righteousness.
