How do you know who has received the Holy Spirit or who blasphemeth the Holy Spirit?
The Bible tells us how to try the spirit in our hearts and minds in great detail. We should see those who have truly received the Holy Spirit keeping the commandments because they both love Christ and love and desire to do the Will of God the Father and His righteousness.
They would have no desire to pray to the fathers of the earth nor would they be seeking the rewards of unrighteousness offered by those men who call themselves benefactors but who exercise authority one over the other.
Any covetous practices by those who claim to be believers would actually be biting one another, not loving one another.
Those who have eyes to see and ears to hear should know that.
The Holy Spirit does reveal to the faithful that eating those things offered to idols is eating of the table that should have been for your welfare but has become a snare. Such covetous practices would make you merchandise and cursed your children with debt as Peter told us. Br>Christ and Paul tells you also that if you are partakers of the table of "devils" for they are the adversaries of the way which have would not only make the word of God to none effect but would make the people workers of iniquity under a strong delusion without real faith but faith that is dead.
This is important because "And whosoever shall speak a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but unto him that blasphemeth against the Holy Ghost it shall not be forgiven." Luke 12:10

Blasphemy the Definitions

The word blaspheme today is said to mean "speak irreverently about God or sacred things."

In older dictionaries like Bouvier's Law Dictionary blaspheme is defined "To attribute to God that which is contrary to his nature, and does not belong to him, and to deny what does." It goes on to say that blaspheme may include, "A false reflection uttered with a malicious design of reviling God."

The phrase "to deny what does" belong to God would also be considered blaspheme. That would be putting a man or an institution of man in place of God. We call such blaspheme idolatry. It would be blaspheme to go under rulers givimg the power to decide good and evil to obtain their dainties and benefits at the expense of others.[1]

In 1916 we see William Mack and William Benjamin Hale[2] writing that "Etymologically, to blaspheme is to speak ill or evil of.[3] Blackstone speaks of it as "blasphemy against the Almighty, by denying his being or providence."[4]

But the word blaspheme in the Bible may have a number of different meanings because it is translated from a number of words that are quite different.

Most translators of the Bible already have doctrines they have accepted as true before they begin to translate the text.

Almost every translation also includes some private interpretation or bias beyond the normal difficulties present in moving from one language to another.

By the Doctrine of Jesus we should understand the importance of the revelation of the Holy Spirit. To falsely claim the guidance or revelation of the Holy Spirit by these definitions would be the blaspheme of the Holy Spirit.

Old Testament

A common word that is used in the Bible over 300 times but only appears as blaspheme twice is the Hebrew word barak.[5] It is a primitive root verb from the Hebrew letters BeitReishKaf ךרב commonly translated "bless" over three hundred times. It also appears as salute 5 times and , curse 4 times and blaspheme and blessing and praised and kneel down twice each. This is because there are other letters added to the word. In this case we see the letters BeitReishKafTav בֵּרַ֥כְתָּ used in 1 Kings 21:10.

1 Kings 21:10 And set two men, sons of Belial, before him, to bear witness against him, saying, Thou didst blaspheme <01288> God and the king. And then carry him out, and stone him, that he may die.

There is no additional letter in 1 Kings 21:13 but the word is still translated blaspheme.

1 Kings 21:13 And there came in two men, children of Belial, and sat before him: and the men of Belial witnessed against him, even against Naboth, in the presence of the people, saying, Naboth did blaspheme <בֵּרַ֥ךְ> God and the king. Then they carried him forth out of the city, and stoned him with stones, that he died.

There are other verses that have the Tav at the end of Barak[6] and at the beginning[7]

In Numbers 23:11

Numbers 23:11 And Balak said unto Balaam, What hast thou done unto me? I took thee to curse<0779 אָֽרָה־ AlefReishChetYod> mine enemies, and, behold, thou hast blessed<בֵּרַ֥כְתָּ BeitReishKafTav> [them] altogether.

In Numbers 22:6 we see the word bless with a Tav at the beginning and another word ‘arar for curse.

Numbers 22:6 "Come now therefore, I pray thee, curse me this people; for they [are] too mighty for me: peradventure I shall prevail, [that] we may smite them, and [that] I may drive them out of the land: for I wot that he whom thou blessest<תְּבָרֵךְ֙ TavBeitReishKaf> [is] blessed<תְּבָרֵךְ֙ TavBeitReishKaf>, and he whom thou curses<0779 normally ReishReishAlef but here it is TavAlefReish תָּאֹ֖ר> is cursed<0779 and here it is YodVavAlefReish יוּאָֽר>."

An added Tav may appear at the beginning of a word or at the end of the word. Other letters lik Vav or Hey can be added to give more details to the meaning or use of a word such as in Psalms 134:2 where a Vav is added to the beginning and end of a word.

Psalms 134:2 Lift up your hands [in] the sanctuary, and bless<וּ֝בָרֲכוּ> the LORD.
Beit Purpose: God Dwelling Place Below - from house or God's house here.
Reish Process of Clarification The "head" or "beginning". Life's revelation.
Kaf Crown: To Actualize Potential power from spiritual to physical realm [to cover, strength]

So the word barak actually means to bless.

Another word which may be closer to actually meaning blaspheme is the Hebrew word gadaph.[8] As a primitive root verb its meaning is taken from from the Hebrew letters GimelDaletPei ףדג translated blaspheme 6 times and reproach once.

It is said to mean to revile men or blaspheme God.

Numbers 15:30 ¶ But the soul that doeth [ought] presumptuously, [whether he be] born in the land, or a stranger, the same reproacheth<01442 מְגַדֵּ֑ף MemGimelDaletPei> the LORD; and that soul shall be cut off[9] from among his people.

2 Kings 19:6 And Isaiah said unto them, Thus shall ye say to your master, Thus saith the LORD, Be not afraid of the words which thou hast heard, with which the servants of the king of Assyria have blasphemed <01442 GimelDaletPeiVav> me.
2 Kings 19:22 Whom hast thou reproached and blasphemed <01442 וְגִדַּ֔פְתָּ VavGimelDaletPeiTav> ? and against whom hast thou exalted thy voice, and lifted up thine eyes on high? even against the Holy One of Israel.
Psalms 44:16 For the voice of him that reproacheth and blasphemeth <01442 וּמְגַדֵּ֑ף VavMemGimelDaletPei>; by reason of the enemy and avenger.
Isaiah 37:6 And Isaiah said unto them, Thus shall ye say unto your master, Thus saith the LORD, Be not afraid of the words that thou hast heard, wherewith the servants of the king of Assyria have blasphemed <01442 GimelDaletPeiVav> me.
Isaiah 37:23 Whom hast thou reproached and blasphemed<01442 וְגִדַּ֔פְתָּ VavGimelDaletPeiTav>? and against whom hast thou exalted thy voice, and lifted up thine eyes on high? even against the Holy One of Israel.
Ezekiel 20:27 Therefore, son of man, speak unto the house of Israel, and say unto them, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Yet in this your fathers have blasphemed <01442 GimelDaletPeiVav> me, in that they have committed a trespass

New Testament

In the Greek text which is a much different language you have one word, blasphemeo the verb, blasphemia the noun, and blasphemos the adjective. The word is derived from two Greek words blapto[13] meaning to hurt or harm and pheme[14] from the word to make known or report.

The word blaspheme could be to attack the reputation of or character of God or the Holy Spirit in the sense of slandering God or falsely misleading people about God. But it also could be used in the sense of turning your back on God's will for you. This usually would involve rejecting God and knowingly to do harm to others and their relationship with God.

Blasphemos the adjective

blasphemos[17] is an adjective from a derivative of 984 from the word βλάπτω blapto[13] "to hurt" and 5345 φήμη pheme[14] "to report" or like 5346 φημί phemi "to make known or say".

Acts 6:11 Then they suborned men, which said, We have heard him speak blasphemous <989> words against Moses, and against God.

2 Timothy 3:2 For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers <989>, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy,
3 Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good, 4 Traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God; 5 Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.
2 Peter 2:10 ¶ But chiefly them that walk after the flesh in the lust of uncleanness, and despise government. Presumptuous are they, selfwilled, they are not afraid to speak evil of dignities.
2 Peter 2:11 Whereas angels, which are greater in power and might, bring not railing accusation <989> against them before the Lord. 12 But these, as natural brute beasts, made to be taken and destroyed, speak evil of the things that they understand not; and shall utterly perish in their own corruption; 13 And shall receive the reward of unrighteousness, as they that count it pleasure to riot in the day time. Spots they are and blemishes, sporting themselves with their own deceivings while they feast with you; 14 Having eyes full of adultery, and that cannot cease from sin; beguiling unstable souls: an heart they have exercised with covetous practices; cursed children:

Conclusion

So back to that detailed definition of the word blaspheme. "To attribute to God that which is contrary to his nature, and does not belong to him, and to deny what does. A false reflection uttered with a malicious design of reviling God."

It is evidently blasphemous "To attribute to God that which is contrary to his nature..."

So to preach, teach, or establish unsound Doctrines about God such as things contrary to the nature of God would come quite easily to those eating of the tree of knowledge rather than the tree of life.

If this eating of the tree of life is a metaphor in the allegory of the story in the Garden for receiving the inspiration of the Holy Spirit then anyone reporting that they are speaking for or on behave of the Holy Spirit concerning the nature of God and are not or are saying things contrary to the Holy Spirit would be giving blapto hurtfully pheme reporting upon God.

If Jesus is the God of Christians then "to attribute to Jesus that which is contrary to his nature" is blasphemous of Jesus.

If it is blasphemous "To... deny" an attribute that does "belong to God" then it is the same to deny attributes that belong to Jesus.

Any false teachings[18] made as if you are speaking for the Holy Spirit would be blasphemous.

Jesus states in Matthew 12:[30] He that is not with me is against me; and he that gathereth not with me scattereth abroad.

[31] Wherefore I say unto you, All manner of sin and blasphemy[16] shall be forgiven unto men: but the blasphemy[16] against the Holy Ghost shall not be forgiven unto men.

[32] And whosoever speaketh a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but whosoever speaketh against the Holy Ghost, it shall not be forgiven him, neither in this world (age), neither in the world to come.

"A false reflection uttered with a malicious design of reviling God" is blasphemous too.

Then a "A false reflection uttered with a malicious design of reviling" Jesus would be blasphemous too.

But what about the Holy Spirit?

  • 1 Corinthians 2:10 But God hath revealed [them] unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God.
