Ordinances

The ordinance of God are always the doctrines of Jesus which should never be replaced by the doctrines of men or their traditions.

Ordinances in the New Testaments

The word ordinance is defined today as "a piece of legislation enacted by a municipal authority." But when we see the term in the Bible it may have been used in a different sense.

The first place we see the term in the New Testament is Luke 1:6

And they were both righteous before God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances [1] of the Lord blameless.

The word here is dikaioma which is translated ordinance three times[2] but four times[3] it is translated righteousness.

It is also translated judgment twice[4]. It is even translated justification once[5] in Romans 5:16 where the word judgment had already appeared from the word krima [6]

The next time we see the word Ordinance in the Bible it is translated from a different Greek word diatage [7] which actually means disposition[8] or arrangement.

Romans 13:2 Whosoever therefore resisteth the power, resisteth the ordinance of God: and they that resist shall receive to themselves damnation.

It should be clear that the appearance of the word ordinance in the Bible does not have to mean "a piece of legislation enacted by a municipal authority."

So again another word is used the third time we see the word ordinance in the Bible which is paradosis[9]:

1 Corinthians 11:2 Now I praise you, brethren, that ye remember me in all things, and keep the ordinances, as I delivered them to you.

The word paradosis[9] is normally translated traditions a dozen times[10] It is from the word paradidomi [11] which means to give into the hands (of another) and commonly translated deliver or betray. This word paradosis is probably closest to our modern use of the word ordinance.

There is still another word sometimes translated ordinance which is dogma [12] which can mean a public decree by a ruler like a king or Senate or government authority but is also defined as a doctrine which should normally mean teaching.

Ephesians 2:15 Having abolished in his flesh the enmity, even the law of commandments contained in ordinances; for to make in himself of twain one new man, so making peace;

The word appears five times[13] in the Biblical text. Twice it references the decrees of Caesar in Luke 2:1 and Acts 17:7 and once the decrees of the Apostles Acts 16:4 but the apostles were forbidden to exercise authority one over the other like the Benefactors of the world. It should be clear that the apostles did not enforce their decrees like Caesar enforced his because Christ ordained a different kind of government or kingdom.

This is why we see in Colossians 2:14 that Jesus blotted out the handwriting of ordinances for true Christians who followed Christ in their hearts and in their minds.

Colossians 2:14 Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross;

Here is where we come to another Greek word dogmatizo [14] which is from that word dogma and translated "subject to ordinances".

Colossians 2:20 Wherefore if ye be dead with Christ from the rudiments of the world, why, as though living in the world, are ye subject to ordinances,

Here we might want to examine the word which also appears as rudiments and Elements.

Finally we find one more word translated ordinance which is in 1 Peter 2:13 "Submit yourselves to every ordinance of man for the Lord’s sake: whether it be to the king, as supreme;"

The word is ktisis [15] appears in 12 verses as creature[16], and creation 6 times[17] and even building once[18] and of course ordinances in 1 Peter 2:13 but means something you establish or create by agreements or contracts such as institutions like civil municipalities.

1 Peter 2:13 Submit yourselves to every ordinance <2937> of man for the Lord’s sake: whether it be to the king, as supreme;

The original term we see translated tradition is associated with paradosis[9] :'"to surrender to cities" and didomi "to give".
The Bible contains story after story about men who give themselves and their God given rights over to the cities of blood with appetite for the dainties of rulers which as "deceitful meats" are a snare. The false doctrines of men are the antitheses of the true doctrines of Jesus. Jesus the Christ told his followers to not covet the wages of unrighteousness offered by those rulers who call themselves benefactors but merely exercise authority one over the other.
Also the term
paradidomi[11] is translated deliver as in deliver up and even betray.

Tradition

The Pharisees were accused by Jesus of transgressing the commandments of God and even making the word of God to no effect by their traditions.

"But he answered and said unto them, Why do ye also transgress the commandment of God by your tradition?" Matthew 15:3

Would modern Christians be accused today by Christ of the same transgression by which he accused the Pharisees because of their present "traditions"?

The English word traditions. today means, "what is a customary practice."

We should not just apply the most common meaning of tradition today to the text written in the scriptures but seek to the meaning intended by the authors.

The term we see translated tradition in the Greek text of the Bible is paradosis which shows up a dozen times in the New Testament scriptures[19] meaning "the act of giving up" and "the surrender of cities".

In Greek it meant "delivery (of goods, parcels, etc" or from a military view "surrender".)[9] is also translated "ordinances".

In Mark 7[20] we see the Pharisees Making the word of God of none effect through their tradition.[20] By the same verse 13 we could see they had many things they were doing to add to that effect of neutralizing the word of God.

We need to know what those traditions were, what was wrong with them. How can we make sure we are not doing that with our traditions today?

In verse 8[20] Jesus accuses them of laying aside the commandment of God replacing them with their tradition of men. In verse 11 we see that was the Corban of the Pharisees which was a system of the welfare state of Judea run through the temple in Jerusalem. That allowed children to often do "no more ought for his father or his mother" as we see in verse 12.[20]

The tradition of social security through the State by FDR does the same as the Corban of the Pharisees. The responsibility of caring for our parents was turned over to the civil state by the New Deal.

There are also traditions that have to do with the doctrines of men that counter the Doctrines of Jesus. Men create new things we are told we must believe in that Jesus never mentions. They impose the concepts on people which is bad enough but they often at the same time cause the people to walk in ways contrary to the Christ and The Way of righteousness.[21]

Decree

Luke 2:1 And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree[12] from Caesar Augustus, that all the world should be taxed.
Acts 16:4 And as they went through the cities, they delivered them the decrees[12] for to keep, that were ordained of the apostles and elders which were at Jerusalem.
Acts 17:7 Whom Jason hath received: and these all do contrary to the decrees[12] of Caesar, saying that there is another king, [one] Jesus.

We see the word decree in Corinthians but it is from the Greek word Krino.[22]

1 Corinthians 7:37 Nevertheless he that standeth stedfast in his heart, having no necessity, but hath power over his own will, and hath so decreed[22] in his heart that he will keep his virgin, doeth well.

The word means separate but is translated many different ways such as -judge 88, determine 7, condemn 5, go to law 2...

It appears in almost a hundred verses:[23]

The civil law is the law that men make for themselves but the Law of Nature is unchangeable within a cause and effect universe. While a "legal system" may call "law" they are subject to change because they are only created by men through contracts, covenants, and constitutions and consent in one form or another.
The Torah tells us of both the Law of Nature and nature's God and the legal system which consist of statutes, ordinances, agreements, covenants, and leagues.

Statutes ordinances laws and portions

The modern definition of statute is "a written law passed by a legislative body." The word statute appears in the Bible in one form or another several hundred times but may have a different definition. The most common Hebrew word for statute is choq [24] consisting of two Hebrew letters ChetKuf and is also translated ordinance, decree, due, law, portion, bounds, custom, appointed, Even commandments. The normal word for "commandments" is mitsvah MemTzadikVavHey [25] composed of completely different letters, ChetKuf in the word statute or ordinance.

  • ח CHET The Life Force - Dynamic nature of live and give life.[fence, thread, hedge, chamber...cycle] 8
  • ק KUF or Kof Omnipresence - Redemption of Fallen Sparks The paradoxical union reish and a zayin holiness or separateness omnipresence of God [Cord... back of the head... Behind the last, least] 100

The first place we see the word commonly translated Statute it appears as the word portion or ration twice in Genesis 47:22:

  • "Only the land of the priests bought he not; for the priests had a portion[24] [assigned them] of Pharaoh, and did eat their portion[24] which Pharaoh gave them: wherefore they sold not their lands."

The next time choq appears a few verses later it is translated law.

Genesis 47:26 "And Joseph made it a law <02706> over the land of Egypt unto this day, that Pharaoh should have the fifth part; except the land of the priests only, which became not Pharaoh’s."

In the text the word choq appears with the additional letter Lamed at its beginning as ləḥōq (לְחֹק֩) LamedChetKuf. We are led to believe that this makes the word previously translated portion mean law. While this letter combination is translated law in Genesis 47:26, it is translated statute in Exodus 29:28 and Leviticus 7:34 but ordinance in Numbers 18:8 and 2 Chronicles 35:25

The most common word for law in the Bible is Torah which comes from a word meaning teach but with the Hebrew letter for faith added in the front. Another word translated law is chathan[26] which is translated both law 27 times and affinity several times.

It really has to do with making something legally binding by making an agreement or contract.

Exodus 5:14 And the officers of the children of Israel, which Pharaoh’s taskmasters had set over them, were beaten, and demanded, Wherefore have ye not fulfilled your task <02706> in making brick both yesterday and to day, as heretofore?

Here we see the word task translated from ChetKuf but again the additional letters KafMem are added to produce the word ḥāqəḵem (חָקְכֶ֤ם). The term ḥāqəḵem appears no where else in the bible and while it refers to a portion or amount of brick to be delivered which is required by law it is the result of an agreement made back in Genesis which brought the people into the bondage of Egypt.

Exodus 12:24 And ye shall observe this thing for an ordinance <02706> to thee and to thy sons for ever.

In Exodus 12:24 we see "And ye shall observe"[27] is from Shamar(שָׁמַר‎) but appears as ūšəmartem VavShinMemReishTavMem (וּשְׁמַרְתֶּ֖ם) and its meaning of statute or "ordinance" was from the noun Choq ChetKuf (חֹק‎)[24] but we see the letters in the text as ləḥāq- LamedHeyKuf (לְחָק־).

The verb would be ‎ Chuqqah ChetKufHey (חֻקָּה)[28]. There is another similar verb said to mean portray or carve work or set a print‎ Chuqah ChetKufHey (חֻקָּה)[29]. We review this in our study or Exodus 12

Exodus 15:25 And he cried unto the LORD; and the LORD shewed him a tree, which when he had cast into the waters, the waters were made sweet: there he made for them a statute <02706 (ḥōq חֹ֥ק)> and an ordinance, and there he proved them,

Here we see the word ḥōq (חֹ֥ק)[24] translated statute with the word ordinance.[30] which is normally seen as mishpat (מִשְׁפָט) MemShinGimelTet but appears in the text as ūmišpāṭ VavMemShinGimelTet (וּמִשְׁפָּ֖ט).

It is almost always translated judgement and is from the verb shaphat ShinGimelTet (שָׁפַט‎)[31] meaning to judge.
