John Vervaeke is a professor of cognitive psychology and science at the University of Toronto.

He recently completed a 50-episode lecture series on Youtube: Awakening From the Meaning Crisis.

The series is an integration of cognitive science and ‘spirituality’.

He develops a framework for understanding what wisdom is. He seeks to explain how elements of knowledge are central to the cultivation of wisdom in societies of the past.

He shares how the usurpation of wisdom by knowledge leaves us adrift in a meaningless world where we are captive.

One way of thinking about the meaning crisis is as a crisis of darkness and light, of what we see or do not see or are unwilling to see.

The monasteries and churches of charity through which the social bonds had degenerated through the gifts gratuities and benefits of rulers. Those systems of charity was eventually replaced by the legal charity of governments who exercise authority.

The steady commodification of schools diluting what passes for ‘education’ to mere preparation for uncertain labor markets have been subverted our relation with wisdom. The conflict between the foolishness of knowledge and the knowing of wisdom has been at the core of the conflict between the two Trees.

We must ask where else do we go for wisdom?
