A wink and a prayer

A great deal of what we think we know about the Bible, especially the Old Testament is the result of thousands of years of private interpretations that have come down to us for centuries that have created out of and for the advancement of the doctrines of men more than the message and meaning of Moses.

But we have believe Jesus was the Messiah have the New Testament too. Knowing from it that Moses and Jesus were in agreement but the Pharisees and others were not in agreement with Jesus and his doctrine because they did not know Moses and his meaning because of all to common misinterpretation(s) of the ancient text.

If the modern interpretations of the Old Testament are false they can influence the interpretation and emphases on the New Testament, especially among Evangelicals who feel a need to identify Israel in today's interpretations of prophesies.

The Phrase "a wink and a prayer" is a eggcorn[1] of the Phrase "a wing and a prayer".

The common Hebrew word for wings is כָּנָף‎ kanaph[2] is also translated skirt, borders, corners, ends.

One word for the idea of wink is קָרַץ‎ qarats[3] but also 07335

A primitive root עָצֶה‎ ‘atsah (AyinTzadikHey ) Strong numbered 06095 "(properly) to fasten (or make firm), i.e. to close (the eyes)" -- to shut.[4]

The letters that form the word עָצֶה Winks or shuts is one of many containing the Hebrew letters AyinTzadik forming the word עֵץ‎ ‘ets [pronounced: ates] said to mean wood translated from Strong number 06086.

Why does the same letter grouping of עָצָה said to be from 06095 (עָצָה) - winks) have so many other meanings?

The verb 06095 עָצֶה‎ AyinTzadikHey to shut or wink conveys the deliberate closing or narrowing of the eyes.

In Scripture

In Scripture this physical motion sometimes becomes a metaphor for an inward intention:

  • "either the secret scheming of sinful humans" or
  • "the settled, sovereign plan of the Lord."

We see the same letters קֶרֶץ‎ qerets (KufReishTzadik) as wink and narrow or form, "nipping or stinging insect"(See קֶרֶץ‎ 07169 narrow, 07170 denounce, 07171 destruction nip.) are sometimes used in completely different ways with opposite meanings, as described in the THEOLOGICAL WORDBOOK OF THE OLD TESTAMENT (TWOT):

"This root refers to a pinching together. It is applied to eyes, lips, and clay. It occurs in Ug(aritic). (UT 19: nos. 2280, 2281) meaning “‘to bite,’’ and ‘‘to shape’’ (clay into an effigy). Note also, Akk. q/kardsu. Our root occurs six times.

In the Qal stem our root is associated with an ‘insidious malicious gesture’ (KD, Psalms, I, p. 427). *‘Winking”’ is not a felicitous translation (Psalms 35:19, et al.)[5] since it connotes merriment rather than hostility. Perhaps ‘‘narrow the eyes’’ would better represent a deceitful and malicious look. Hence, ‘‘he who narrows his eyes causes sorrow’ (Proverbs 10:10).[6] Further support comes from Prov 16:30[7] where the man of violence ‘‘shuts his eyes’ and ‘bars (gdras) his lips.’’ The apparent intent is to depict a harsh man whose eyes are closed to others’ troubles and who bars his lips in hard cruelty.

A totally different connotation occurs in Job 33:6[8] where the Ugaritic/Akkadian meaning ‘‘to shape clay’’ figuratively applies to the creation of mankind and, hence, to Job's own origin. This usage is found in the Dead Sea Hodayot in dependence on the Job passage (Gaster, T. H., The Dead Sea Scriptures, Doubleday, rev. ed. 1964, p. 183).

Back to the word wink as קָרַץ‎ qarats(KufReishTzadik[3] which does appear 5 times[9] in the Bible.

Perception and Purpose

Eyes mark perception and purpose (2 Samuel 22:27 With the pure thou wilt shew thyself pure; and with the froward thou wilt shew thyself unsavoury.28[10]; Matthew 6:22–23[11]); to shut them is therefore to harbor a purpose that is hidden from public view but fully known to God (Hebrews 4:13)[12].

There is יָעַץ‎ YodAyinTzadik which can mean to advise, consult and the Hebrew word for wood dose include that idea of consulting.

Squinting the eye like a wink is often suggesting narrowing the focus. We also know related roots of עצים or just עצ AyinTzadik include not only the word like עֵצָה for "counsel/advice" but the word for "backbone" which includes standing up with the idea of firmness/strength like a tree.

There is יָעַץ‎ YodAyinTzadik which can mean to advise, consult.

We see this word in יוֹעֵץ֙ in Isaiah 9:6 in reference to a Counsellor but before that in verse 2 we see "The people that walked in darkness".[13] And by verse 4 "For thou hast broken הַחִתֹּ֖תָ the yoke of his burden, and the staff of his shoulder, the rod of his oppressor..."

There are numerous occurrences of this word which is associated with the word wood or council. We see it in Proverbs 16:30 – “He who winks his eye devises perversity; he who purses his lips brings evil to pass.” • The closing of the eye an signal covert malice. "The wicked man masks his intentions with a gesture that looks harmless but hides a plot. The verse warns that subtle signs often betray a heart set on wrongdoing (compare Proverbs 6:12–14).

2. Isaiah 14:26 – “This is the plan devised for the whole earth, and this is the hand stretched out over all the nations.” • Here the same Hebrew consonants appear in a prophetic context, now describing the LORD’s comprehensive purpose against proud empires. The Assyrian menace loomed large in Isaiah’s day, yet God’s “plan” encompasses the entire earth and therefore cannot be thwarted (Isaiah 14:27; Proverbs 19:21).

Thematic Connections

• Human Plotting versus Divine Purpose: Scripture frequently contrasts the frailty of human schemes with the immovable counsel of God (Psalm 33:10–11; Proverbs 21:30; Acts 4:27–28). The two uses of the verb sharpen that contrast: one wink births perversity; the other word announces the Lord’s universal strategy.

Footnotes

  1. Eggcorns are words or phrases that result from a mishearing, misremembering, or reinterpretation of an original expression. They often make logical sense on their own (unlike pure malapropisms), which is why they spread. The term "eggcorn" itself is an eggcorn for "acorn."
