Edom
Edom is a name that means "red" in Hebrew like Esau, the brother of Jacob, who was born with red hair and skin. There was a conflict between Esau and Jacob.(Genesis 25:26, Hosea 12:4)
The Hebrew word for "brother" is אח like with Cain and Abel (Genesis 4:8-11), or Joseph and his brothers (Genesis 37:2, Genesis 42:3-8)or even Aaron and Moses (Exodus 4:14).
There is often a comparison made between Jacob and Esau using the term Israel and Edom which can represent two different ways. Solomon's idolatry in 1 Kings 11:1-8, asserts that following his foreign wives or strange wives was competitively intertwined with the Edomite Hadad.[1]
In the "vision of Obadiah" Edom is told that the "pride (זְד֤וֹן zəḏōwn)[2] of thine heart hath deceived thee" (הִשִּׁיאֶ֔ךָ hiššî’eḵā)[3] so that the wrath of God will "destroy the wise [men][4]out of Edom, and understanding[5] of the mount of Esau".
What was the "violence[6]" against thy brother Jacob" which brought "shame" and cause them to be "cut off for ever"?
Obediah talks about when "thou stoodest(עֲמָֽדְךָ֣ ‘ămāḏəḵā)[7] on the other side" and how did "the strangers"[8] carry about away captive (שְׁב֥וֹת šəḇōwṯ) his forces, and foreigners entered into his gates, and cast lots upon Jerusalem, even thou [wast] as one of them.
While in verse 11 it talks about strangers (זוּר zuwr )[8] which is identical to the word meaning crush, but in verse 12 where your brother becomes a stranger the author uses a different word translated stranger[9]
The Edomites were descendants of Esau and lived in the area of Mount Seir.
Obadiah says that God punished Edom for mistreating Israel.
