Edom
Edom is a name that means "red" in Hebrew like Esau, the brother of Jacob, who was born with red hair and skin. There was a conflict between Esau and Jacob.(Genesis 25:26, Hosea 12:4)
The Hebrew word for "brother" is אח like with Cain and Abel (Genesis 4:8-11), or Joseph and his brothers (Genesis 37:2, Genesis 42:3-8)or even Aaron and Moses (Exodus 4:14).
There is often a comparison made between Jacob and Esau using the term Israel and Edom which can represent two different ways. Solomon's idolatry in 1 Kings 11:1-8, asserts that following his foreign wives or strange wives was competitively intertwined with the Edomite Hadad.[1]
In the "vision of Obadiah" Edom is told that the "pride of thine heart hath deceived thee" so that the wrath of God will "destroy the wise [men] out of Edom, and understanding out of the mount of Esau".
What was the "violence[2]" against thy brother Jacob" which brought "shame" and cause them to be "cut off for ever"?
Obediah talks about when "thou stoodest(עֲמָֽדְךָ֣ ‘ămāḏəḵā)[3] on the other side" and how did "the strangers" carry about away captive (שְׁב֥וֹת šəḇōwṯ) his forces, and foreigners entered into his gates, and cast lots upon Jerusalem, even thou [wast] as one of them. 12 But thou shouldest not have looked on the day of thy brother in the day that he became a stranger; neither shouldest thou have rejoiced over the children of Judah in the day of their destruction; neither shouldest thou have spoken proudly in the day of distress.
The Edomites were descendants of Esau and lived in the area of Mount Seir.
Obadiah says that God punished Edom for mistreating Israel.
