Rebekah (רִבְקָה, Strong’s 07259) stands as the divinely chosen wife of Isaac and the mother of Esau and Jacob. Appearing in roughly thirty Old Testament verses, her life bridges the patriarchal narratives from Abraham to Jacob, shaping the unfolding of the covenant promises.

Rebekah (רִבְקָה) as a word may be implying captivating beauty and hospitable (Genesis 24) or one who binds others, e.g., through marriage or influence.

Some sources extend it to "captivating" or "to bind with beauty/charms" but by here voluntary service and sacrifice. Social bonds through voluntary or freewill service and care rather than contractual bond. This fits the biblical narrative where Rebekah is strikingly beautiful and plays a decisive, clever role in securing Isaac’s lineage (Genesis 24–27).

Though שָׁאָה (Strong’s 07583) appears only once, its sense of silent, intent observation conveys an attitude of hushed expectancy. The word pictures a fixed gaze marked by wonder and careful discernment.

  • Genesis 24:21: “Meanwhile, the man watched her silently, to see whether the LORD had made his journey a success.” (Berean Standard Bible)

Barren without prayer

Years of barrenness drew Isaac to intercede: “The LORD answered his prayer, and his wife Rebekah conceived” (Genesis 25:21). Troubled by an unusual struggle within her womb, she sought the LORD, who declared, “Two nations are in your womb… the older will serve the younger” (Genesis 25:23). Rebekah thus became the first recipient of a prenatal prophecy, and the divine election of Jacob over Esau frames the doctrine of sovereign grace later cited in Romans 9:10-13.

Fruitful generation

Rebekah links Abraham’s household to succeeding generations, ensuring the transmission of the promise revealed in Genesis 26:3-4.

"3 Sojourn(גּ֚וּר)[1] in this land, and I will be with thee, and will bless thee; for unto thee, and unto thy seed[2], I will give all these countries, and I will perform the oath which I sware unto Abraham thy father; 4 And I will make thy seed to multiply as the stars of heaven, and will give unto thy seed all these countries; and in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed;"

The prophecy of Genesis 25:23 illustrates God’s sovereign choice working in creation if we allow it.

"23 And the LORD said unto her, Two nations are in thy womb, and two manner of people (lə’ummîm, לְאֻמִּ֔ים peoples)[3] shall be separated from thy bowels; and the one people shall be stronger than the other people; and the elder shall serve the younger. 24 And when her days to be delivered were fulfilled, behold, there were twins in her womb."

This sovereign choice of God appears over and over among those who live by faith in a history of salvation from Malachi 1:2-5 to Romans 9:10-13).

"2 I have loved you, saith the LORD. Yet ye say, Wherein hast thou loved us? Was not Esau Jacob's brother? saith the LORD: yet I loved Jacob,3 And I hated Esau, and laid his mountains and his heritage waste for the dragons of the wilderness.4 Whereas Edom saith, We are impoverished, but we will return and build the desolate places; thus saith the LORD of hosts, They shall build, but I will throw down; and they shall call them, The border of wickedness, and, The people against whom the LORD hath indignation for ever.5 And your eyes shall see, and ye shall say, The LORD will be magnified from the border of Israel."
"10 And not only this; but when Rebecca also had conceived by one, even by our father Isaac; 11 (For the children being not yet born, neither having done any good or evil, that the purpose of God according to election might stand, not of works, but of him that calleth;) 12 It was said unto her, The elder shall serve the younger. 13 As it is written, Jacob have I loved, but Esau have I hated."

See THE RIGHTEOUSNESS OF GOD’S CHOICES

Rebekah’s own prayers, decisions, and actions as a women of sacrifice and service actively participate in God’s plan obedience like Mary in Luke 1: "[38] And Mary said, Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word. And the angel departed from her."

The ready service of women in righteousness exemplifies faith expressed through freewill works mentioned in James 2:17-26.

"[17] Even so faith, if it hath not works[4], is dead[5], being alone. [18] Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my works.[4] [19] Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble. [20] But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works[4][6] is dead? [21] Was not Abraham our father justified by works, when he had offered Isaac his son upon the altar? [22] Seest thou how faith wrought with his works, and by works was faith made perfect? [23] And the scripture was fulfilled which saith, Abraham believed God, and it was imputed unto him for [righteousness]]: and he was called the Friend of God. [24] Ye see then how that by works a man is justified, and not by faith only. [25] Likewise also was not Rahab the harlot justified by works, when she had received the messengers, and had sent them out another way? [26] For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works[4] is dead also."

"Freedom is the Right to Choose, the Right to create for oneself the alternatives of Choice. Without the possibility of Choice, and the exercise of Choice, a man is not a man but a member, an instrument, a thing.” Archibald MacLeish

  6. Love God and neighbor
Matthew 7:21 Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. 22 Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? 23 And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity. 24 Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock:... 26 And every one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand:
