The only time the Bible talks about Religion in a good sense is in James 1:27 "Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, [and] to keep himself unspotted from the world."
Religion meant what you did to fulfill your obligation to take care for the honest and sincere needs of your neighbor.
- There are two ways to do that.
- By faith, hope and charity
- By force, fear and violence
- Religion is that simple.
I will admit, many people today use the new definition and meaning of the word religion "What you think about God or a god or a Supreme being".
But by that definition, the religion of an atheist is the belief that "there is no God". That is what he believes about a Supreme being, and he or she will cling to their faith in that idea.
You see, the modern atheist does have a religious belief in gods and supreme beings. His or her religion is the god and gods of government who takes care of the needy by force, fear and violence. The gods of government are the gods many Paul spoke of in 1 Corinthians 8:5 "For though there be that are called gods, whether in heaven or in earth, (as there be gods many, and lords many,)"
Religion was defined 200 years ago as “Real piety in practice, consisted of the performance of all known duties to God and our fellow men” and it is simply how a nation, a people, or a society takes care of its needy, and therefore, it is how they serve the God or gods they have chosen for themselves.
Over time, Religion was redefined by men to mean what you think about a supreme being.
So which definition is correct?
The Bible mentions religion only 5 times - four of which use it in a derogatory sense. Both the Old and New testaments say that we are to love our neighbor and even our enemy. In Old and New testaments it tells you to do that with Freewill offerings, or what we call charity. In both Old and New testaments, we are prohibited from coveting or in any way forcing our neighbor to contribute to our welfare.
Today, almost every government has men who call themselves Benefactors but who force the people to perform their "duty" to their fellow man, and the gods of those systems of the World tell you what that duty is. The Church established by Jesus Christ saved millions of people during the decline of the Imperial Cult of Rome.
The original Christian conflict was about how to perform that duty to our fellowman. Should we do it by force and power or by love and charity?
Eventually people like Constantine would introduce a new type of Church which was the root or mother of the churches of the Modern Christians. They do some charity, but they depend on a man who Exercises authority one over the other. That man becomes the Supreme being who is "(of authority or an office, or someone holding it) superior to all others."
This second type of Church was a vain, proud church with its own vicar of a Supreme being. The people who found it attractive sought to rule over other people with a different idea. They were content to take life and set rulers over the people.
The daughters of that church also seek to rule over the people. They are no different than the socialist, except in degree...for all have sought to enslave their neighbors through Covetous Practices rather than serve through Charitable Practices. They are all self righteous in their vain persons.
They changed the meaning of Religion. There are two types of religion. There is the one who loves their neighbor as themselves through faith, hope and charity and the Perfect law of liberty, attending to the Weightier matters in Free Assemblies. And there is the co-religionist who approaches life like the Socialist who thinks he has a right to take from his neighbor and force his neighbor to comply with his idea of righteousness.
Religious people like Lady Godiva continued to care for the needy rather than succumb to the temptation of Socialism. While many men think they are religious, they do not come in the Name of Jesus. The modern ministers make themselves rich by catering to the people; they tickle ears with Christian fables and half truths about the Bible.
The Bible is about how to be ruled by a Spirit of Creation who gives us life within the virtue in our hearts and in our minds. As men fell in love with ruling over their neighbor during the rise of kings, Democracies and authoritarian governments, new false religions were created out of the Lasciviousness of the vain natural brutes of Society.
Most of what you see posing as modern religion is just vain philosophies of people who are either Slothful in their duties to their fellow man or are also in love with the idea of ruling over their neighbor in Socialist schemes. None of that has to do with Pure Religion or the Righteousness of God ...
One of the purposes of the Church established by Jesus and the ministers whom He appointed was and is to feed the flock as benefactors who do NOT exercise authority, and this is done together with attending to the Weightier matters of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith which include caring for the needs of our neighbors, the widows and orphans of our society through Pure Religion in matters of health, education, and welfare. We are NOT to do so by the Covetous Practices of modern governments.
The Way of Christ was not like the way of the world, nor the governments of the gentiles who depend on benefactors who exercise authority. Christ's ministers and true Christians do not depend upon systems of social welfare that force the contributions of the people like the corban of the Pharisees which made the word of God to none effect. Many people have been deceived to go the way of Balaam and the Nicolaitan and out of The Way of Christ.
The Christian conflict of the first century Church appointed by Christ was because they would not apply to the fathers of the earth for benefits but instead relied upon a voluntary network providing a daily ministration to the needy of society through Faith, Hope, and Charity by way of freewill offerings of the people, for the people, and by the people through the perfect law of liberty in Free Assemblies according to the ancient pattern of Tuns or Tens.
