Review Romans 1
1:5 ... obedience to the faith among all nations...
1:16 ...the gospel of Christ... 17 ...just shall live by faith.
1:18 ... the wrath of God ... against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men...
1:21 ... vain I... imaginations... foolish hearts
1:22 Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools,
1:25 Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served their institutions
1:28 ...God gave them over to a reprobate mind,
1:29 Being filled with all unrighteousness, [followed buy a long list32]
2:1 Therefore thou art inexcusable, O man
2:5 But after thy hardness and impenitent[unrepented] heart...wrath...
2:6 [God]Who will render to every man according to his deeds:
2:8 ... contentious, and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, indignation and wrath,
9 Tribulation and anguish, upon every soul of man that doeth evil
2:29 ... one inwardly; ... circumcision ... of the heart, in the spirit, and not in the letter;
3:12 They are all gone out of the way
3:13 ...they have used deceit; the poison of asps is under their lips:
3:14 Whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness:
3:15 Their feet are swift to shed blood:
3:16 Destruction and misery are in their ways:
3:17 And the way of peace have they not known:
3:18 There is no fear of God before their eyes.
3:24 ...Who being justified? them that believe:
3:31 Do we then make void the law through faith? God forbid: yea, we establish the law.
Paul is writing the Church in Rome. The Church in its most general sense, is the religious society33 founded and established by Jesus Christ, to receive, preserve, and propagate His doctrines and ordinances. It is also a body of communicants gathered in an orderly way as a body or community35 of Men and women who follow the ways of Christ, united in the way they govern themselves profession of the same faith and the observance of the same ritual and ceremonies.
1 What shall we say then that Abraham our father, as pertaining to the flesh, hath found? 2 For if Abraham were justified by works, he hath whereof to glory; but not before God. 3 For what saith the scripture? Abraham believed God, and it was counted unto him for righteousness. 4 Now to him that worketh is the reward not reckoned of grace, but of debt. Is Paul saying we do not have to keep the ten commandments or saying we do not have to get circumcised?
5 But to him that worketh38 not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness.
God of forgiveness or of accounting? Still the God of righteousness
6 Even as David also describeth the blessedness of the man, unto whom God imputeth righteousness without works,
7 Saying, Blessed are they whose iniquities are forgiven, and whose sins are covered.
Psalms 32:1-11 Blessed [is he whose] transgression [is] forgiven, [whose] sin [is] covered. Blessed is the man unto whom the LORD imputeth not iniquity, and in whose spirit there is no guile. When I kept silence, my bones waxed old through my roaring all the day long. For day and night thy hand was heavy upon me: my moisture is turned into the drought of summer. Selah. I acknowledged my sin unto thee, and mine iniquity have I not hid. I said, I will confess my transgressions unto the LORD; and thou forgavest the iniquity of my sin. Selah. For this shall every one that is godly pray unto thee in a time when thou mayest be found: surely in the floods of great waters they shall not come nigh unto him.
7 Thou art my hiding place; thou shalt preserve me from trouble; thou shalt compass me about with songs of deliverance. Selah. I will instruct thee and teach thee in the way which thou shalt go: I will guide thee with mine eye. Be ye not as the horse, or as the mule, which have no understanding: whose mouth must be held in with bit and bridle, lest they come near unto thee. Many sorrows shall be to the wicked: but he that trusteth in the LORD, mercy shall compass him about. Be glad in the LORD, and rejoice, ye righteous: and shout for joy, all ye that are upright in heart.
33:1-6 Rejoice in the LORD, O ye righteous: for praise is comely for the upright. Praise the LORD with harp: sing unto him with the psaltery and an instrument of ten strings. Sing unto him a new song; play skilfully with a loud noise. For the word of the LORD is right; and all his works are done in truth. He loveth righteousness and judgment: the earth is full of the goodness of the LORD. By the word of the LORD were the heavens made; and all the host of them by the breath of his mouth.
8 Blessed is the man to whom the Lord will not impute[reckon ]39 sin.
9 ¶ Cometh this blessedness then upon the circumcision only, or upon the uncircumcision also? for we say that faith was reckoned to Abraham for righteousness.
10 How was it then reckoned? when he was in circumcision, or in uncircumcision? Not in circumcision, but in uncircumcision.
11 And he received the sign of circumcision, a seal of the righteousness of the faith which he had yet being uncircumcised: that he might be the father of all them that believe, though they be not circumcised; that righteousness might be imputed unto them also:
12 And the father of circumcision to them who are not of the circum cision only, but who also walk in the steps of that faith of our father Abraham, which he had being yet uncircumcised.
13 For the promise, that he should be the heir of the world, was not to Abraham, or to his seed, through the law, but through the righteousness40 of faith41.
Righteousness
Matthew 3:15 And Jesus answering said unto him, Suffer it to be so now: for thus it becometh us to fulfil all righteousness <1343>. Then he suffered him.
Matthew 5:6 Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness <1343>: for they shall be filled.
Matthew 5:10 Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness’ sake <1343>: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Matthew 5:20 For I say unto you, That except your righteousness <1343> shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven.
Matthew 6:33 But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness <1343>; and all these things shall be added unto you.
Matthew 21:32 For John came unto you in the way of righteousness <1343>, and ye believed him not: but the publicans and the harlots believed him: and ye, when ye had seen it, repented not afterward, that ye might believe42 him.
Luke 1:75 In holiness and righteousness <1343> before him, all the days of our life.
John 16:8 And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness <1343>, and of judgment:
Faith
Luke 7:50 “And he said to the woman, Thy faith hath saved thee; go in peace.”
Luke 18:42 And Jesus said unto him, Receive thy sight: thy faith hath saved thee.
Ephesians 2:8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:
Matthew 8:10 “When Jesus heard [it], he marvelled, and said to them that followed, Verily I say unto you, I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel.”
Matthew 9:22 “But Jesus turned him about, and when he saw her, he said, Daughter, be of good comfort; thy faith hath made thee whole. And the woman was made whole from that hour.”
Matthew 15:28 Then Jesus answered and said unto her, O woman, great is thy faith: be it unto thee even as thou wilt. And her daughter was made whole from that very hour.
Mark 5:34 And he said unto her, Daughter, thy faith hath made thee whole; go in peace, and be whole of thy plague.
Mark 10:52 And Jesus said unto him, Go thy way; thy faith hath made thee whole. And immediately he received his sight, and followed Jesus in the way.
Luke 8:48 And he said unto her, Daughter, be of good comfort: thy faith hath made thee whole; go in peace.
Luke 17:19 And he said unto him, Arise, go thy way: thy faith hath made thee whole.
Hebrews 11:1 Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.
So what does that substance mean?
5287 ~upostasiv~ hupostasis \@hoop-os'-tas-is\@ from a compound of 5259 and 2476; n f AV-confidence 2, confident 1, person 1, substance 1; 5 1) a setting or placing under 2) that which has foundation, is firm
Galatians 3:25 But after that faith is come, we are no longer under a schoolmaster [tutor].
There should be a common doctrine if there is a common faith based tutor.
Romans 14:23 And he that doubteth is damned if he eat, because he eateth not of faith: for whatsoever is not of faith is sin.
14 For if they which are of the law be heirs, faith is made void, and the promise made of none effect: [Two sons]
15 Because the law worketh43 wrath: for where no law is, there is no transgression.
16 Therefore it is of faith, that it might be by grace; to the end the promise might be sure to all the seed; not to that only which is of the law, but to that also which is of the faith of Abraham; who is the father of us all,
17 ¶ (As it is written, I have made thee a father of many nations,)before him whom he believed, even God, who quickeneth the dead, and calleth those things which be not as though they were.
18 Who against hope believed in hope, that he might become the father of many nations, according to that which was spoken, So shall thy seed be.
Matthew 17:20 And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you.
Matthew 17:15 Lord, have mercy on my son: for he is lunatick, and sore vexed: for ofttimes he falleth into the fire, and oft into the water.
16 And I brought him to thy disciples, and they could not cure him.
17 Then Jesus answered and said, O faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you? how long shall I suffer you? bring him hither to me.
18 And Jesus rebuked the devil; and he departed out of him: and the child was cured from that very hour.
19 Then came the disciples to Jesus apart, and said, Why could not we cast him out?
See also: Luke 17:6 And the Lord said, If ye had faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye might say unto this sycamine tree, Be thou plucked up by the root, and be thou planted in the sea; and it should obey you.
19 And being not weak in faith, he considered not his own body now dead, when he was about an hundred years old, neither yet the deadness of Sara’s womb: Hebrews 11:11 Through faith also Sara herself received strength to conceive seed, and was delivered of a child when she was past age, because she judged him faithful who had promised. 20 He staggered not at the promise of God through unbelief; but was strong in faith, giving glory to God; 21 And being fully persuaded that, what he had promised, he was able also to perform. 22 And therefore it was imputed to him for righteousness. 23 ¶ Now it was not written for his sake alone, that it was imputed to him; 24 But for us also, to whom it shall be imputed, if we believe on him that raised up Jesus our Lord from the dead; 25 Who was delivered for our offences, and was raised again for our justification.
