1 Samuel 8 is often quoted by men (like Thomas Paine in Common Sense) to show that the rise of governments holding an exercising authority over the people is evidence of the people rejecting God that He should not rule in their hears and minds.

The more power people give to their governments the farther they are from God.

== 1 Samuel 8:1 == ¶ And it came to pass, when Samuel was old, that he made his sons judges over Israel.
