Thomas Jefferson
Thomas Jefferson (13 April 1743 – 4 July 1826) was author of the Declaration of Independence (1776) and the Virginia Statute for Religious Freedom (1777), founder of the University of Virginia (1819), the third president of the United States (1801–1809), a political philosopher, editor of Jefferson's Bible (1819), and one of the most influential founders of the United States. He has been sometimes labeled a deist but we might want to understand that term better to understand the man.
Jefferson was clearly religious but also had serious problems with some practices and thinking of clerical groups and their practice of religion. Understanding a common definition of Religion in the eighteenth century and how it is decidedly different from the way the term is used today may also shed some light on the controversies surrounding Jefferson and his view of religion.

"I promised you a letter on Christianity, which I have not forgotten. On the contrary, it is because I have reflected on it, that I find much more time necessary for it than I can at present dispose of. I have a view of the subject which ought to displease neither the rational Christian nor Deists, and would reconcile many to a character they have too hastily rejected. I do not know that it would reconcile the _genus irritabile vatum_ who are all in arms against me. Their hostility is on too interesting ground to be softened. The delusion into which the X. Y. Z. plot shewed it possible to push the people; the successful experiment made under the prevalence of that delusion on the clause of the constitution, which, while it secured the freedom of the press, covered also the freedom of religion, had given to the clergy a very favorite hope of obtaining an establishment of a particular form of Christianity thro' the U. “4. Religion. Your reason is now mature enough to examine this object. In the first place, divest yourself of all bias in favor of novelty & singularity of opinion... shake off all the fears & servile prejudices, under which weak minds are servilely crouched. Fix reason firmly in her seat, and call to her tribunal every fact, every opinion. Question with boldness even the existence of a God; because, if there be one, he must more approve of the homage of reason, than that of blindfolded fear. You will naturally examine first, the religion of your own country. Read the Bible, then as you would read Livy or Tacitus. The facts which are within the ordinary course of nature, you will believe on the authority of the writer, as you do those of the same kind in Livy and Tacitus. The testimony of the writer weighs in their favor, in one scale, and their not being against the laws of nature, does not weigh against them. But those facts in the Bible which contradict the laws of nature, must be examined with more care, and under a variety of faces. Here you must recur to the pretensions of the writer to inspiration from God. Examine upon what evidence his pretensions are founded, and whether that evidence is so strong, as that its falsehood would be more improbable than a change in the laws of nature, in the case he relates. For example in the book of Joshua we are told the sun stood still several hours. Were we to read that fact in Livy or Tacitus we should class it with their showers of blood, speaking of statues, beasts, &c. But it is said that the writer of that book was inspired. Examine therefore candidly what evidence there is of his having been inspired. The pretension is entitled to your inquiry, because millions believe it. On the other hand you are astronomer enough to know how contrary it is to the law of nature that a body revolving on its axis as the earth does, should have stopped, should not by that sudden stoppage have prostrated animals, trees, buildings, and should after a certain time have resumed its revolution, & that without a second general prostration. Is this arrest of the earth's motion, or the evidence which affirms it, most within the law of probabilities? You will next read the New Testament. It is the history of a personage called Jesus. Keep in your eye the opposite pretensions: 1, of those who say he was begotten by God, born of a virgin, suspended & reversed the laws of nature at will, & ascended bodily into heaven; and 2, of those who say he was a man of illegitimate birth, of a benevolent heart, enthusiastic mind, who set out without pretensions to divinity, ended in believing them, and was punished capitally for sedition, by being gibbeted, according to the Roman law, which punished the first commission of that offence by whipping, & the second by exile, or death in fureâ.
...Do not be frightened from this inquiry by any fear of its consequences. If it ends in a belief that there is no God, you will find incitements to virtue in the comfort and pleasantness you feel in its exercise, and the love of others which it will procure you... In fine, I repeat, you must lay aside all prejudice on both sides, and neither believe nor reject anything, because any other persons, or description of persons, have rejected or believed it... I forgot to observe, when speaking of the New Testament, that you should read all the histories of Christ, as well of those whom a council of ecclesiastics have decided for us, to be Pseudo-evangelists, as those they named Evangelists. Be ye Separate
"Did Christ exclude interaction with man's government, or even the unbeliever with His call for separation?"
"And before him shall be gathered all nations: and he shall separate them one from another, as a shepherd divideth his sheep from the goats:" Matthew 25:32
Christ did say "But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you." Matthew 6:33
He also said "...Render therefore unto Caesar the things which be Caesar’s, and unto God the things which be God’s." Luke 20:25
Paul when talking to the Corinthians he said "Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean [thing]; and I will receive you," 2 Corinthians 6:17
Many people use this single line to justify not paying Caesar and even dishonoring the vows of their fathers. Paul was talking to the Corinthians as if they were his children[2] and telling them to not be unequally yoked with unbelievers because we were not to have fellowship with unrighteousness. [3]
The word here for fellowship[4] here in 2 Corinthians 6:14 only appears once in the Bible. The word in the Greek is metoche and has to do with sharing and communion and is from the word metecho. [5]
Normally the word in the Bible for fellowship is koinonia.[6] It also has to do with communion but more in the sense of community and association. The Greek word metecho specifically has to do with partaking as in eating of the same table.
Eating of Benefactors who set their table by exercising authority is contrary to Christ, Moses and even Proverbs where we are told to put a knife to our throat rather than eat with those men.[7]
What and to who was Paul talking to and why?
Paul's friend Erastus was the "public treasurer of Corinth" by the name of Erastus. He was trying to influence all of Corinth to switch to a system of Corban that would make the word of God to effect because it would depend on freewill offerings rather than covetous system of social Welfare that depended on force.
He was trying to influence the people of a whole nation to change their ways and he understood how agreements with governments and the men who call themselves Benefactors yokes the people unequally.[8]
Paul understood that if you make an accord according to the ways of Belial[9] and the Nicolaitan.
Paul is trying to teach a whole nation the Perfect law of liberty [10]
He is talking about the idea of not making covenants or agreements[11] with the people where you go which is as old as the Ten Commandments[12] and even the Garden[13].
Paul also talks about being righteous and how we must free ourselves righteously or continue as servants in righteousness.[14]
Remember it is the Spirit that giveth life and being in His Spirit is the tie that binds us together as a body free or bond. [15]
We of His Church like Israel are supposed to be a priest to all nations. We are to set an example of righteousness in all things. Israel when called were in bondage to Pharaoh and they continued serving him until they were cast out. They also learned to serve one another in hard times and even helped other Egyptians. This same pattern was repeated with Christ and in the early Church.
We are prodigal sons returning to our Father's house. We must come to serve not be served or we come not in the name of Christ.
Christ was rich but made himself poor and Paul the Apostle was also rich in funds and authority but made himself a servant of the people by the way of Christ.[16]
This is what Christ called out His Church to be and to do. The ministers are to make themselves servants of Christ by leading the people in service one to another. The people are to be a part of that service by supporting the faithful.
- 1 Timothy 5:8 "But if any provide not for his own, and specially for those of his own house, he hath denied the faith, and is worse than an infidel."
The word "infidel" is from the Greek word apistos[17] meaning the unbelieving. Them that believe not.
Believe not what?
The ministers of Christ tend to the Daily ministration by charity so that the people will learn to sacrifice for one another in love as Christ sacrificed for us. This was the righteous Corban of Christ and the corbanus of the early Church.
Christians are to be one form of government who become Benefactors without exercising authority or force. Any priest or pastor, minister, monk or mullah, or rabbi, rector or representative who does not seek to provide the needs of society through charity alone betrays the God of creation and all the true prophets of God.
Jesus talked about His ministers not being of the world.[18] Understanding what world he was talking about may clarify His divine position concerning being separate.
We have a choice to seek to live by faith, hope and charity through the perfect law of liberty or by force, fear and covetous practices through the governments of the world. That is what separates a peculiar people as children of God from the adversaries of God and the workers of iniquity. The true servants of God are separate and even excluded from many of the benefits offered by the world which most modern church ministers refuse to see. To be true ministers of Christ they must repent the ways of force and seek to provide for the needy according to the way of love.
Many want to come out, but who wants to come out and serve like Christ and daily lay down their life for their fellow man in pure religion and to set the table of the LORD in true Christian fellowship? Moses and Christ called out their ministers to go in and out, and in that interaction they would bless the world in righteousness.

Reverend Ethan Allen claimed in 1857 in an anecdote to have heard Jefferson say, “Sir, no nation has ever yet existed or been governed without religion. Nor can be. The Christian religion is the best religion that has been given to man.” The use of the term religion did not mean what often poses as religion today but how it was defined at that time. Since religion was defined 200 years ago as “Real piety in practice[19], consisting in the performance of all known duties to God and our fellow men”[20], and it is simply how a nation, a people, or a society takes care of its needy and therefore how they serve the God or gods they have chosen for themselves.[21]

While attributed to Thomas Jefferson in his second inaugural address, it does not belong to Jefferson. It does not appear in the text nor have I found it anywhere else in his writings. In that second inaugural address, Jefferson did warn the people against overspending by saying that the government "may meet within the year all the expenses of the year, without encroaching on the rights of future generations, by burdening them with the debts of the past."
May Never wrote
Jefferson never wrote, "Government big enough to supply everything you need is big enough to take everything you have." but it sounds like something he might say because it is true.
Critics
It has become popular among far less accomplished men to find fault with Jefferson but seldom without a destructive political agenda.
The inexcusable accusations of men like Stephen Ambrose defamed the Thomas Jefferson with unwarranted claims that ignore historical records.
- "Jefferson surely knew slavery was wrong, but he didn't have the courage to lead the way to emancipation. If you hate slavery and the terrible things it did to human beings, it is difficult to regard Jefferson as a great man, or a good man. He was a spendthrift, always deeply in debt. He never freed his slaves... He could not rise above convenience. To be a slave-holder meant one had to regard the African American as inferior in every way. One had to believe that the worst white man was better than the best black man. If you did not believe these things you could justify yourself to yourself. So Jefferson could condemn slavery in words, but not in deeds. Jefferson had slaves at his magnificent estate, Monticello, who were superb artisans, shoemakers, masons, carpenters, cooks. But like every bigot, he never said, after seeing a skilled African craftsman at work or enjoying the fruits of his labor, 'Maybe I'm wrong'. He already knew that. He ignored the words of his fellow revolutionary John Adams, who said that the revolution would never be complete until the slaves were free."[22]
Stephen E. Ambrose, is speculating and projecting his own personal bias attitudes that contradict the facts of history in his bias "To America: Personal Reflections of an Historian". If he was any kind of a historian he would know he is wrong.
There are numerous accusations of "Factual errors and disputed characterizations" in Ambrose's writings to say nothing of the charges of Plagiarism. Because of the shift of American thinking concerning democracy that occurred during World War II and the push for socialism which it leads to it was popular with some political advocates to encourage anti-Jeffersonian rhetoric.
From the beginning Thomas knew the capturing of slaves in Africa was "waged cruel war against human nature itself, violating it's most sacred rights of life & liberty".[23]

Jefferson clearly opposed slavery but he also opposed government forced virtue because it would open a pandora's box of tyranny.
"Jefferson, in his address to the Virginia Legislature of 1774, says that 'the abolition of domestic slavery is the greatest object of desire in these colonies, where it was unhappily introduced in their infant state'" George William Curtis, "The Present Aspect of the Slavery Question" (18 October 1859), New York City.
The criticisms of Jefferson by abolitionists was that they wished he could have done more not that he opposed freedom for slaves. They knew he was a confirmed abolitionist but they did not face annihilation by British tyrants.
"All honor to Jefferson to the man, who, in the concrete pressure of a struggle for national independence by a single people, had the coolness, forecast, and capacity to introduce into a mere revolutionary an abstract truth, applicable to all men and all time, and so to embalm it there to-day and in all coming days it shall be a rebuke and a stumbling block to the very harbingers of reappearing tyranny and oppression." Yes, Democracy was opposed by many in America the same as the majority of Americans feared and opposed the Constitution of the United States for much the same reason. “A simple democracy is the devil’s own government.”[25]
Jefferson wanted to free slaves and worked to change the laws so that all men might be free saying, “Can the liberties of a nation be thought secure when we have removed their only firm basis, a conviction in the minds of the people that these liberties are of the gift of God?[26] That they are not to be violated but with His wrath?”[27]
While Jefferson supported some ideas that could be considered democratic he was adamant about the limitations of democracy since rights came from God and not the mob or governments.
"To take from one, because it is thought that his own industry and that of his fathers has acquired too much, in order to spare to others, who, or whose fathers have not exercised equal industry and skill, is to violate arbitrarily the first principle of association, — the guarantee to every one of a free exercise of his industry, & the fruits acquired by it."[28]
Democracy has no inherent right to regulate or even hew the rights of their fellow man for either our individual or collective benefit. Jefferson continually limited the power of democracy against the bulwark of natural rights granted by God. His insistence upon listing "the pursuit of Happiness"[29] as an "unalienable rights" rather than "property" was not only in hopes of freeing the slaves of America but to prevent all men from becoming slaves of democracy.
"The path we have to pursue is so quiet that we have nothing scarcely to propose to our Legislature. A noiseless course, not meddling with the affairs of others, unattractive of notice, is a mark that society is going on in happiness. I predict future happiness for Americans if they can prevent the government from wasting the labors of the people under the pretense of taking care of them.”[30]
Thomas Jefferson declared in 1819, "I too am an Epicurean. I consider the genuine (not imputed) doctrines of Epicurus as containing everything rational in moral philosophy which Greece and Rome have left us."
Thomas Jefferson prophesied when he said:
“The central bank is an institution of the most deadly hostility existing against the Principles and form of our Constitution. I am an Enemy to all banks discounting bills or notes for anything but Coin. If the American People allow private banks to control the issuance of their currency, first by inflation and then by deflation, the banks and corporations that will grow up around them will deprive the People of all their Property until their Children will wake up homeless on the continent their Fathers conquered.”
The power of Jury Nullification.
“And if the question relate to any point of public liberty, or if it be one of those in which the judges may be suspected of bias, the jury undertake to decide both law and fact.” Thomas Jefferson: Notes on Va., 1782. Q.XIV
"Can the liberties of a nation be sure when we remove their only firm basis, a conviction in the minds of the people, that these liberties are the gift of God?" asked Thomas Jefferson.
In defence of the people
There were clear examples of the people needing to defend themselves from elements of government power or their overreach back then and even in our modern century. Hitler, Stalin, Mao, Pol Pot and many others disarmed the population and wreaked havoc and horrors upon the people killing countless millions.
"To Conquer a Nation, First Disarm its Citizens" Adolph Hitler Did Hitler really make this exact statement? Of course not because he spoke German. Hitler did say "The most foolish mistake we could possibly make would be to allow the subject races to possess arms. History shows that all conquerors who have allowed their subject races to carry arms have prepared their own downfall by so doing. Indeed, I would go so far as to say that the supply of arms to the underdogs is a sine qua non for the overthrow of any sovereignty. So let’s not have any native militia or native police." [5]
There is no doubt that Hitler wanted to do away with the "native militia" although he lifted arm restrictions for members of the "National Socialist German Workers' Party" (NAZI). It is also clear that Hitler wanted to disarm the Jews with the 1938 German Weapons Act just as liberals today want to disarm conservatives.
All the bills and laws proposed by the government will effectively disarm the law-abiding people of America and leave guns in the hands of those who are not.
The better the people are armed with military type rifles, including what people call assault rifles, the less likely there will be more holocausts. No one believes it is possible in their country yet history is ripe with examples of rampant abuse of power. Once the people no longer have the military ability to defend itself by forming a militia there is seldom any way to go back.
Cesare Beccaria
Cesare Beccaria, criminologist, jurist, philosopher, and politician, who is widely considered one of the greatest thinkers of the Age of Enlightenment (1774-1776). in his treatise On Crimes and Punishments originally published in 1764 which Jefferson quoted in his Commonplace book which is like a daily ledger of thoughts, ideas, and conversations. He quoted Beccaria in the original Italian because he owned the book which was published again in 1809.
Here are two other translations of Cesare Beccaria in context of his treatise On Crimes and Punishments.
“A principal source of errors and injustice are false ideas of utility. For example: that legislator has false ideas of utility who considers particular more than general conveniencies, who had rather command the sentiments of mankind than excite them, who dares say to reason, ‘Be thou a slave;’ who would sacrifice a thousand real advantages to the fear of an imaginary or trifling inconvenience; who would deprive men of the use of fire for fear of their being burnt, and of water for fear of their being drowned; and who knows of no means of preventing evil but by destroying it. “The laws of this nature are those which forbid to wear arms, disarming those only who are not disposed to commit the crime which the laws mean to prevent. Can it be supposed, that those who have the courage to violate the most sacred laws of humanity, and the most important of the code, will respect the less considerable and arbitrary injunctions, the violation of which is so easy, and of so little comparative importance? Does not the execution of this law deprive the subject of that personal liberty, so dear to mankind and to the wise legislator? and does it not subject the innocent to all the disagreeable circumstances that should only fall on the guilty? It certainly makes the situation of the assaulted worse, and of the assailants better, and rather encourages than prevents murder, as it requires less courage to attack unarmed than armed persons.” The second translation here is by Henry Paolucci and is of the first edition but has an ellipse (...)
“False is the idea of utility that sacrifices a thousand real advantages for one imaginary or trifling inconvenience; that would take fire from men because it burns, and water because one may drown in it; that has no remedy for evils, except destruction. The laws that forbid the carrying of arms are laws of such a nature. They disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes….Such laws make things worse for the assaulted and better for the assailants; they serve rather to encourage than to prevent homicides, for an unarmed man may be attacked with greater confidence than an armed man.”
Taking a fundamental Right to arm yourself for defence of self and community reduces the man from a natural state of responsibility.[31]
Schooled
The essential social bonds of a voluntary society are established long before war or famines.
Alexis de Tocqueville speaks of how Americans, who had a better sense of being the government of the people, by the people, and for the people,[32] gathered together in voluntary groups[33] for the purposes of accomplishing or sponsoring projects that would result in the building of public infrastructure such as schools or hospitals, and even prisons without dependence upon government taxation.
People were accustomed to gathering in order to generate funds through a variety voluntary means and methods, including community festivals or Fêtes[34] through charity that people commonly expect to be funded by government through taxation today.
American associations where the people gathered together to accomplish projects of all sorts was common but only because they often gathered in the free assemblies of tens[35] which were the "little Platoons" of Edmund Burke. Those tithing of families grouping in voluntary teams of tens were popular in America among the religious and the militias for obvious practical reasons. It would be the same men who built those hospitals, prisons, schools, roads and bridges.
Thomas Jefferson was a strong advocate for education and believed that it was essential for a well-informed citizenry. Twice,[36] he proposed a bill for the “General Diffusion of Knowledge” which hoped to establish a system of schools in Virginia.
These school would be open to the public and he wanted some taxation to provide fir the first 3 years for "all the free children, male and female". This was an unusual idea since Virginians thought this idea of educated the community was the responsibly of the local communities.
Virginia did not establish free public education in the primary grades until after the Civil War under Reconstruction era legislature.
Even though their was minimal funding for Jefferson's proposal it was not passed, specifically because as," Madison reported a year later, when TJ’s Bill was again considered, that the system was carefully considered but not adopted because of the cost involved."
Jeffersons proposal to use some funds to jump start education was with the surplus that comes from an economy ruled by liberty. In Jefferson's second inaugural address, he warnedh the people against overspending by saying that the government "may meet within the year all the expenses of the year, without encroaching on the rights of future generations, by burdening them with the debts of the past."
Jefferson also opposed a plan 1816 to create a state "Board of Public Instruction" in Virginia because would replace local control by state control.
Many colonists[37] opposed the property taxes used to fund schools, viewing those taxes as an infringement on property rights. Some would oppose it based on the covetous nature of taking from your neighbor wealth for your benefit.
Thomas Jefferson did desire some tax support for education in Virginia, he also expressed concerns about property taxes being used to fund schools, as he believed it could lead to the rise of “new ‘kings, priests, and nobles’” if the people remained ignorant.
The Massachusetts Bay Colony had some funded public education passed down from when the Puritan had political control in Massachusetts and did not want to do what the Catholics did, build their own schools. Tax-funded schools were far less popular outside of New England based on religions and moral objections. It was believed that we all should contribute to the education of our neighbors’ children but those contributions should be freewill offerings or charity.
“Our tenet ever was that Congress had not unlimited power to provide for the general welfare, but were restrained to those specifically enumerated; and that, as it was never meant that they should provide for that welfare but by the exercise of the enumerated powers, so it could not have been meant they should raise money for purposes which the enumeration did not place under their action.”
