Dabar
דָבָר (dâbâr) spans every genre of the Old Testament. It can denote a spoken word, a written statement, a matter under discussion, an event already past, or one yet to come. This single term thus binds together divine revelation, covenant obligations, prophetic oracles, legal proceedings, wisdom sayings, historical narrative, and personal speech, appearing approximately 1,441 times.
The phrase “the word of the LORD” (dᵊḇar YHWH) suggest the same meaning as the "[[word of God]" (logon tou Theou) seen in Mark 7: “13 Making the word of God of none effect[1][2] through your tradition, which ye have delivered: and many such like things do ye.[3]
It first comes to Abram “in a vision” (Genesis 15:1) and later anchors the prophetic ministry from Samuel forward (1 Samuel 3:1, 19). Through it God addresses patriarchs (Genesis 26:5), kings (1 Kings 6:11), and nations (Jeremiah 1:4). Its recurring arrival underscores both God’s initiative and His communicative faithfulness: “Not one word has failed of all His good promise” (1 Kings 8:56).
Though Genesis 1 employs אָמַר (“He said”), the Psalter explicitly attributes creation to God’s “word”: “By the word of the LORD the heavens were made” (Psalm 33:6). Psalm 147:15 extends that authority to providence: “He sends forth His command to the earth; His word runs swiftly.” What God speaks takes place, establishing a pattern later echoed in Isaiah 55:11: “So My word will not return to Me empty, but it will accomplish what I please.”

Why go ye about to kill me? 20 The people answered and said, Thou hast a devil: who goeth about to kill thee? 21 Jesus answered and said unto them, I have done one work, and ye all marvel. 22 Moses therefore gave unto you circumcision; (not because it is of Moses, but of the fathers;) and ye on the sabbath day circumcise a man. 23 If a man on the sabbath day receive circumcision, that the law of Moses should not be broken; are ye angry at me, because I have made a man every whit whole on the sabbath day? 24 Judge not according to the appearance, but judge righteous judgment.” John 7:19-24
