Jeroboam II was the son and successor of Jehoash (Joash) and the thirteenth king of the ancient Kingdom of Israel, over which he ruled for forty-one years in the eighth century BC. He was prosperous in trade with trade Egypt and Assyria with commodities like olive oil, wine, and horses. With his military success came a haughty spirit where he reveled in his power and allowed systems of religion and and government administrative system to begin to mix.

Amos warns him in Amos 6:13 of boasting concerning his own strength. And in verse 3 he warns that he is drawing to a place of violence and oppression of the poor giving into the wantonness which does not bear fruit.

His reign was in the time of the prophets Hosea, Joel, Amos and Jonah. They all condemned the systems of false religion that degenerates the people that should have been Israel, turning the fruit of righteousness into hemlock.(Amos 6:12) This was the same complaint that would be made by Jesus and the Corban of the Pharisees.
