Manasseh[1] was the firstborn son of Joseph and Asenath. Asenath[2] was associated with "the goddess Neith" and said to be "the daughter of Potipherah priest of On."[3]

Some Jewish traditions struggle with her being Egyptian at all and press that she is the daughter of Dinah[4] who was raped by Shechem (Genesis 34) and merely adopted by Potipherah after Jacob put the child on the wall of Egypt. Other rabbinical traditions suggest that the child produced was Shaul, the son of Simeon. But according to Genesis 46:10 and Exodus 6:15[5] Shaul was the son of a Canaanitish woman.

  • Genesis 41:45 And Pharaoh called Joseph s name Zaphnathpaaneah; and he gave him to wife Asenath the daughter of Potipherah was the daughter of Potiphera[6] Asenath priest of On. And Joseph went out over [all] the land of Egypt.
  • Genesis 41:50 And unto Joseph were born two sons before the years of famine came, which Asenath the daughter of Potipherah priest of On bare unto him.
  • Genesis 46:20 And unto Joseph in the land of Egypt were born Manasseh and Ephraim, which Asenath the daughter of Potipherah priest of On bare unto him.

Manasseh[7] is said to mean "God has made me forget". Genesis 41:51
