The doctrine of remission of sin is the doctrine of salvation from the consequences of sin. It is believed by many that under the authority of the institutions of Moses that keeping the law by your own act of will would bring you protection from the consequences of the sin of violating the Ten Commandments.

This of course is based on the interpretation of some Jews like the Pharisees. The Modern Christian looking at the interpretations of the Modern Church concerning the Old Testament depend heavily on the interpretations of the denominations of Judaism like the Pharisees, Sadducees and Zealots. They would like to think they have a clear view of God through Christ but Christ seemed to be in agreement with Moses and in disagreement with many of those Jewish denominations of the time.

John 1:17 For the law was given by Moses, [but] grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.
