Confounded confused and ashamed

Confound as a verb can mean "cause surprise or confusion in (someone), especially by acting against their expectations" or "mix up (something) with something else so that the individual elements become difficult to distinguish."

In the King James Dictionary it is defined as:

1. To mingle and blend different things, so that their forms or natures cannot be disinguished; to mix in a mass or crowd, so that individuals cannot be distinguished.
2. To throw into disorder.
3. To mix or blend, so as to occasion a mistake of one thing for another.
4. To perplex; to disturb the apprehension by indistinctness of ideas or words.
5. To abash; to throw the mind into disorder; to cast down; to make ashamed.
6. To perplex with terror; to terrify; to dismay; to astonish; to throw into consternation; to stupify with amazement.:
7. To destroy; to overthrow.

The word confuse in the same dictionary is defined:

1. To mix or blend things, so that they cannot be distinguished.
2. To disorder; as, a sudden alarm confused the troops; a careless bookkeeper has confused the accounts.
3. To perplex; to render indistinct; as, the clamor confused his ideas.
4. To throw the mind into disorder; to cast down or abash; to cause to blush; to agitate by surprise, or shame; to disconcert.

We can also see the word ashamed defined:

1. Affected by shame; abashed or confused by guilt or a conviction of some criminal action or indecorous conduct, or by the exposure of some gross errors or misconduct, which the person is conscious must be wrong, and which tends to impair his honor or reputation. It is followed by of.
2. Confused by a consciousness of guilt or of inferiority; by the mortification of pride; by failure or disappointment.

As an adjective ashamed would always follow a noun but there are many different Hebrew words translated as forms of confused, confounded, and ashamed in the Old Testament. Many of them have to do with doing something shameful which leads to more confusion.

In Psalms 35:4 "Let them be confounded[1] and put to shame[2] that seek after my soul: let them be turned back and brought to confusion[3] that devise my hurt."

Here the word chapher[3] is translate confusion but in other verses it also is translated confounded and ashamed and even reproach. In this verse there is the word buwsh[1] which is commonly translated ashamed but also shame 9 times and even confusion. In this same verse we the phrase "let...put to shame using the word kalam[2]. So all these words can include ideas like confounded, shamed and confused.

Some of these same words are repeated in Psalms 35:26 "Let them be ashamed[1] and brought to confusion[chapher][3] together that rejoice at mine hurt: let them be clothed with shame and dishonour that magnify [themselves] against me." Here we see a new word dishonour from a new Hebrew word këlimmah[4] that is related to Kalam[2].
